I previously lived in Shelbourne Towers and despite the occassional roach I can honestly say I would move back there in a second if I could. The Henley's buildings were built in the 70s and they flex & creak very loudly when you (or your upstairs neighbor) walk around; the reviewer who said not to plan on sleeping in if your upstairs neighbors are early risers is spot on, and given The Henley's elderly and middle-aged population that is common. Noise levels in my bedroom & living room exceed 60dB just from the tenants above walking around their apartment, and I dislike knowing that I cause similar annoyance to the tenant below me. Many tenants of apartments & townhouses lock their dogs outside on the decks in the evenings and on weekends and let them bark nonstop, and management condones this because they don't want to scare away pet owners (and their willingness to pay large pet fees) by requiring that they properly train and care for their animals. Bringing me to another issue: Bugs. I haven't seen many roaches but every spring and fall I have ant intrusions through cracks in the drywall that are very hard to combat despite frequent visits (or at least requests to the office for visits) by the Orkin man. There are acres of kudzu providing erosion control for the hills The Henley's complex is nested in, which has recently become a prolific breeding ground for kudzu bugs. They don't bite, but they hop on your clothes when walking from your car to your apartment then seek out cool, dark places (so if you take off a shirt and throw it in a laundry hamper without checking it first, they start exploring), they smell unpleasant when smashed, and if smashed in contact with skin they will cause irritation and rashes. The Henley's efforts at controlling these bugs has been ineffective so far (as of November 2014), I assume because of the sheer amount of kudzu surrounding the complex. The reviewer mentioning the "whitewashing" of walls by a non-painter is absolutely correct. I didn't have a problem with messy paint jobs on Shelbourne Towers' cinderblock walls, but The Henley's drywall looks bad with white paint slathered on. They also don't mask power outlets or light switch covers during painting so the cream plastic has a messy, built-up white border. The maintenance staff also tend to be somewhat messy, as another reviewer mentioned. After some drywall work I found drywall paste caked on my light switches, kitchen faucet, the sink itself, and on the dishes they took out and left on the counter to make room to wash their hands. While the office and maintenance staff are very cordial and attentive, the propery is poorly managed. They frequently do things like pressure wash sidewalks with tenants' cars parked along them, covering them in dust & grime; re-roofing leaky buildings and not cleaning up stray nails in the parking lots; and closing & repaving lots during school semesters when there is little extra parking capacity. Bottom line, if you can afford to live somewhere else that is a similar distance from campus, do it. Location and the staff are the only things The Henley's 40-year-old, stick-built, messily-maintained complex has going for it.

Maintenance has usually been very responsive and caring, but I left town to visit home for spring break and they left my door unlocked while I was away. My boyfriend who has a key stopped by while I was gone to use the bathroom after work, and told me my door was unlocked. I remembered specifically locking it as I'm very cautious. I thought he must be mistaken and let it go, but today, maintenance showed up and told me they did a routine inspection last week and an email was sent about it (I double triple checked and I did not receive one). This explains why my door was somehow unlocked. This is not only frustrating but also dangerous as a woman living alone here. I obviously have valuables and personal information that was put at risk while I wasn't even here to do anything about it or find out. Fairly recently I also had a scary interaction while maintenance came in without permission for pest control and I was in the shower. It took me yelling several times asking him to "please leave and give me a minute" to get him to step back out. The bathroom door was open and as a woman that was a very uncomfortable situation to be in. Other than these two issues, the apartments themselves aren't great either. The laundry now costs $10 for two small loads where half of the time only one of the two washers are working, the pool is open for maybe one month out of the year, the leasing office is closed on random days with only an email notifying residents the day of so if you need laundry coins you're screwed, parking isn't included in the rent but the lots are constantly filled with cars of people who don't live here/have parking stickers (I saw them having people towed for like 4 days and then it went back to normal) which is also difficult as a woman living alone having to walk around late at night instead of parking in front of the building, the garbage trucks come around 2-4am and are EXTREMELY loud, the units are old and constantly smell musty no matter how much you clean, there's roaches and earwigs even if you leave zero trash out ever, everything clearly got the "landlord special", there's black mold in the shower, extremely thin walls (especially the ceiling), homeless people digging around in the dumpsters and yelling at people, and you get all of that for $1k+. It's livable, but a scam. Giving 2 stars because it could be worse I guess. Spend your money a little further from campus and avoid this mess. Edit: I'm glad to see that there's a new manager who actually cares about the people living here. After my experience she reached out personally, had maintenance come ASAP to treat the mold and anything else that could be addressed, and then gave me a gift card. I'm leaving my review up because I do feel like it's valid complaints, but the way that the situation was handled has definitely changed my view of these apartments and their staff in a very positive way.

I was looking for a place that had a home-feel to it. Since I was still in Florida, my search was all online at that time. When I came across the Cottages on Tazewell, I could not believe all that I was getting for the price; from the indoor space, the amenities, the outdoor space, location, and, most importantly, the leasing and property management team. This place super exceeded my every expectation. The staff was extremely helpful in ensuring that my move was an easy transition. I moved back to Florida after my lease was up to be closer to family. Years later now in 2026, my career has led me back, once again, to this beautiful town, Knoxville. The prior experience at the Cottages was amazing, so I knew that this is where I wanted to live again. To my pleasant surprise, the leasing manager has been promoted to property manager, and he and his team have been incredibly helpful in making my move and transition a smooth one, again. They are professionals in their work and human in their interactions. They are attentive and prompt on maintenance requests. They upkeep a lush and breath-taking landscape. The salt-water resort pool is always well maintained. The application and leasing process is straight forward. The staff at the Cottages is honest, diligent, and friendly. The Cottages have a prime location just minutes away from Fountain City, Beverly Park, restaurants, shops, and the freeway. Yet, it has a feel of a get-a-way private oasis with mountain views. I love this place and I am happy to call it home, again. It helps to live in a place like this when having to be away from one's loved ones. I found mine was susceptible to leakage and mold. One water leak went undetected until the day I moved out. For the most part it was a friendly community, nice area for walking. There is bus service that goes to Earth Fare with access to the buses to downtown and Kingston Pike. The one thing I'd say is to do a walkthrough and insist on a written accounting when moving out. The only reason I moved was because of a purchase of a house to stabilize expenses. I did ask for a written accounting but never heard back. No big deal on my part, I don't understand why they didn't (I've worked with apartment complexes before for managers and always provided a written accounting). Last recommendation is when you give notice here, make sure you get a written receipt of notice. I gave notice and they took it as a pre-notice moving notice (in other words, didn't count it as proper notice even though it was on their paperwork). Still recommend this as a good place to live but with these caveats.

My rent is 788/mo for 1 bedroom but is probably higher now for most one bedrooms since renovations. I am basically paying for the location of this apartment complex. You get barely any hot water for showers. Property managers and realty company who owns Crestridge are not good. The realty company is known for not taking care of their properties and one such property had a lady fall through her deck and a whole row of apartments burned down. I had a property manger threaten me that she would have me arrested for writing a bad check because they failed to cash a check I gave them right away. Instead they sat on it for three months, and after paying all my regular bills on time, they tried to cash an old check that I thought had been cashed already and I did not have the funds.
