I waited to write this review until I had a second opinion because I didn't want to solely rely on my gut. I went to O'Shea and O'Shea after I was referred by my brother in law. I was new in town and needed to get a good teeth cleaning and exam. I was a little nervous, as I have really only had one dentist and one hygienist my whole life. Overall, I felt that the younger O'Shea was just too aggressive in his interventions for me and their billing practices had some hints of dishonesty.
Let me start out with the positive: Everyone was very friendly and timely.
And the negative: My biggest frustration and dissatisfaction was that they billed me more than they billed my insurance. It wasn't a large amount, but it generated a refund for me. A refund I never knew about until I looked at my explanation of benefits and compared it to my itemized bill from my cleaning. I called them about a month ago and they told me they would refund the amount, I am sadly still waiting for the refund. I can deal with an aggressive dentist, but dishonest billing practices and inability to refund due balances is something I don't have the tolerance for, hence my yelp review.
The new patient exam was 2.5 hours long and I had to wait 4 months to get that appointment. The office did not take full xrays, only bitewings, as I provided them with my old records. They also took photographs of my teeth, which I thought was very odd. I felt like they based most of their recommendations for cavities based on these photos. I didn't understand how they could assess how deep the fillings were solely based on pictures. I asked, and their response was they never know how deep they are until they get in there. Isn't that what xrays are for?
I saw the dentist, the younger O'Shea for only a few minutes. He didn't explain where the issues were with my fillings, he basically didn't saw anything about my teeth. He did refer me to a ENT to fix my deviated septum, a referral I never asked for. He also really wanted to know about my sleeping patterns, because it related somehow to something I'm sure they were selling. And just like that he was gone. He was very nice and friendly, but I would have appreciated him explaining why he wanted $1400 of my money. It was only after the cleaning did Monica tell me all about my 7 fillings. I've never been told I needed 7 fillings EVER. I take pretty good care of my teeth, I was shocked. She didn't explain where they were or why they needed fillings, even though this should be the job of the dentist. Again, Monica was super nice, very genuine, but it should not have been her job to inform me of all my cavities. She also prefaced the bad news with, "Now, don't be alarmed, you can do this however financially it works for you." I also was not a fan of her cleaning, my teeth continued to feel dirty after the cleaning and collect plaque very quickly. Not my experience from previous dental cleanings from back home. I was then handed a "treatment plan" that outlined the work I needed that totaled almost $1400. WHAT? At that point, I knew I would be getting a second opinion.
The last thing that really made me upset was that they billed me more than they billed my insurance.
Fast forward to now: I went to another dentist, a much more conservative dentist, that told me I didn't need any cavities at this time. He will be watching a few teeth and sent me on my way. Phew, $1400 saved. read more
