This Portuguese/ Brazilian store was a great find to shop for some of our favorite Brazilian products. They carry our favorite Guarana soda, snacks, condiments, baking items, and also ready made food like coxinha, Portuguese sandwiches, and desserts. The service was very friendly and attentive and the shop was pretty organized. We even found a new pan for making flan. We're sure to come back and will spread the word to others interested in Brazilian products and food. read more

Fantastic find in San Marcos! My oldest son has a new obsession...Portuguese and Brazil, so when I found this store on yelp, I knew I would be mother of year...but only for a few minutes. Teenagers! ;) O Prego reminds me of little corner stores/bodegas I would find in Brooklyn- half market, half deli. We browsed the aisles, found a few things to buy, and then went to the deli/bakery section. There's plenty to order here. We settled on a few small bites. Everything was absolutely delicious. My fiancé and I will definitely be coming back for their coffee and pastries on a weekend morning! The owners couldn't have been any nicer to my son as he practiced his Portuguese- ordering for us and even chatting it up with him. This warmed my mama heart! We stopped by on the way to San Diego. We wanted to get some sandwiches. Our fault for not reading the website,they only open the kitchen on the weekends. The place is well stocked with item from Brazil and Portugal. What shocked me was this store is located in a business area,not near a residential neighborhood. They seemed to do well enough to stay in business. We ended up just getting some nata's. The custard had a nice egg flavor. Since it wasn't crowded the lady was able to answer questions and help us. read more

My wife returned home from a Mediterranean trip with friends recently and one of her girlfriend's husband wanted to experience "bacalhau" or salted cod fish, a delicacy of Portuguese and Brazilian cuisine. Her girlfriend couldn't bring any "bacalhau" home, so, my wife promised to bring some when we visited them from San Diego. Well, a close friend who is part Portuguese, knew exactly where to get authentic "bacalhau" in North County: O Prego!!! Along with a coffee cafe and bakery, this is your one stop shop for all of your needs. On the weekends you will find also a sandwich shop offering delectable food and dessert. My wife tried also the "pastel de nata" or the iconic Portuguese egg custard tart, flaky and crisp layers, filled with a sweet creamy custard baked to perfection. I've been following O Prego on social media for years, and on our way to a Portuguese festival in San Diego, I finally had the chance to stop by. Time was tight, but I didn't want to miss the opportunity -- and I'm so glad we made the stop! From the moment we walked in, João and his wife greeted us with the warmest "Bom dia!" and instantly made us feel at home. In the short 15-20 minutes we were there, I was able to grab a much-needed restroom break after a long drive, enjoy a delicious latte (galão), and pick up some treats to take with us -- two pastéis de nata, two quindim (my absolute favorite and not always easy to find), and two bolo de arroz. Since O Prego carries both Portuguese and Brazilian specialties, I had to try their coxinha -- it was really good! They also had an assortment of brigadeiros that looked incredible, but I'll have to save those for my next visit. The owners were incredibly generous and even sent us off with a bola de Berlim for the road. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The shop itself has a great vibe -- cozy dining area, well-stocked shelves with Portuguese and Brazilian goods, and now they're serving lunch too.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I can't wait to come back when I have more time to sit down, explore all the products, and enjoy a full meal. We had such a great experience at O Prego! The steak rolls were absolutely amazing super fresh, soft, and honestly perfect on their own. We also picked up from the cold case 'Goulart's Smoked Linguica de Casa' to take home, and it did not disappoint. We threw the linguica on the BBQ along with the rolls, and everything came together so well. The bread held up perfectly and was so fresh and easy to eat. We ended up making linguica sandwiches, and they were incredible simple, flavorful, and one of those meals you keep thinking about after. They also had a number of delicious Portuguese desserts that were hard to resist! On top of that, the owner was incredibly kind and super friendly, which made the whole experience even better. João Da Silva opened this year's ago but was effected by Covid. He has been getting everything back in order, opening the store front and now offering food! American coffee isn't good and if you have been to Europe you would know that. This place pretty much takes you to Lisbon/Porto with its variety of coffee (same machine/beans you would get in Europe) with a wife arrange of snacks and desserts to pair woth your coffee. He continues to expand the menu and is now making authentic dishes from Brazil and Portugal over the weekends (open-till they run out). It was authentic and very excited to have this near by. Come here for great coffee, friendly staff, authentic food, and groceries straight from Brazil/Portugal. read more

João and his wife Liza have curated such a beautiful place. The place is very welcoming, clean, and family owned. We recently discovered that they've opened up a new sandwich section, and it's incredible. The bread they use is the same one they sell in the freeze, freshly made in Portugal with no chemicals, no artificial ingredients, just clean and wholesome, exactly how food should be. We loved it so much that we came back the very next day. We also picked up some of their meats to cook at home, and the quality is outstanding, truly some of the best we've ever had. It's clear they put their heart into everything they do and that they really care about bringing high-quality ingredients to their customers. We stock up on so many goodies, when we're here. So much better quality than any regular store near by. Definitely shop here first for groceries before going to a grocery store, you won't regret it. read more

growing up in Boston with a Brazilian best friend, I've been DEEPLY craving some of the Brazilian snack foods that were so easily accessible in my youth. my husband was camping with our scouts near O Prego and agreed to make a little detour to satiate my cravings and I feel so lucky that he did! apparently he was browsing like a lost puppy and the owner came over to save him. He showed her my extensive list and she more than provided every item, plus suggested a couple things I actually had wanted to try and forgot to add to my list! I was so happy to have amazing coxinha that brought me right back to my childhood, the crispy exterior and creamy filling, with tender chicken and a hint of creamy cheese, as well as perfectly cheesy and flaky folhados, creamy bite size coconut brigadeiro, a super yummy queijado de coco - which tasted like a coconut-y custard, think almost flan/pudim consistency with a coconut base, and a few pasteis de nata (literally better than I had in Lisbon the last time I went!). She also suggested a bag of their frozen pao de queijo and BLESS HER for doing so because we've been air frying them over the last few days to savor and they are so good I could cry. Way better than the Americanized version you over pay for at the local markets in OC. everything was fresh, delicious, and made me feel homesick. I hope we can make a reason to be back in the area soon so I can shop the entire store and try some of their sandwiches! read more

I highly recommend this restaurant; the food is delicious. They have a sandwich that's so good you can't eat just one! Favorite place to purchase Brasilian and Portuguese foods! The owners and staff are amazing and so kind. They are always so friendly and welcoming. Their lunch menu is delicious and their homemade pastries are delicious! Love their Coxinha, Bifana, Pasteis, and brigadeiros are so good. Also their Picanha is amazing! a return customer here ‍ the family that runs this shop are so incredibly nice it makes shopping here even more worth it! This store seems to be part store part bakery. I've picked up Brazilian hair care from here. I also love to get the passionfruit soda 10/10. Some honorable recommendations from the bakery are the pastel de nata and the Oreo brigadeiros. They are made fresh daily. The guy who seems to be the owner always offers to warm them on the spot for you and they come with powdered sugar and cinnamon. After trying these I obsessively came back week after week. This is the only place in San Diego where I could find an authentic Pasteis de Nada. One bite and i immediately felt like I was back in Portugal. One of the owners was born and raised in Portugal and has brought a piece of his culture and put it right in this shop in San Diego. Truly an amazing store run by the most beautiful husband and with team. I love this store. It's the cleanest and well organized store I've seen. It has a ton of things in a small space. Joa and wife are super kind. I think I've gone there three or four times and they remember me and ask about my family. The food is beyond delicious. Today we got two baked pocket sandwiches one ham and the other linguicia bot were delicious. Their pasties de Nata are so yummy! What a wonderful find! I wanted to buy ingredients to make feijoada and googled Brazilian food. This little gem popped up. It's 5 minutes from home! They had a feijoada kit, farofa, and Guaraná Antártica! The place was hopping with enthusiastic shoppers. Great staff. Great vibe. Will return often! read more

The store owner is amazing and it's so wonderful to see all of the Portuguese food and goods. My grandparents are from Madeira and so is the store owner. He and my father had a great conversation about Madeira, he was so kind. It brought back memories and the pastel da nata pastries are to die for! Definitely worth a visit! read more

A gem of a place that is a small Portuguese mini mart that includes frozen foods, such as fish, empanadas, and breads. They also have a few fridges of specialty meats and sausages. My favorite part is their fresh bakery section that includes egg tarts, croquets, and other delicious pastries. Miguel provided excellent, friendly customer service and was so kind to my daughter. Nice Portuguese/Brazilian store. Family owned store with nice service. They started delivering products in the pandemic and continues to do that if requested.Good quality food, products and great variety of cheeses, sodas, linguiça, bread. Portuguese pastries are delicious and they also have "coxinhas". Ambiance is always friendly, clean and lots of places to park. They also accept requests if you "would like something they don't have at the store they can order upon request. read more

My husband recently went to Portugal and he came back obsessed with pastel de nata. I searched everywhere for them for his birthday and came across oprego. First of all via email they were so kind, polite and actually responded personally not a robot response! First kudos. Ordered a dozen for my husband's "birthday cake" and when we got there for pick up not only did the owner remember my name but the pastels were fresh out the oven, warm and amazing! My husband said just like he had in Portugal! We will be back for sure. Thank you so much! Hello! My name is João. I was born and raised in the beautiful fishing village of Paul do Mar on the island of Madeira, Portugal. Growing up surrounded by family, great food, and a strong sense of community inspired my dream of one day sharing those traditions with others. Today, my family and I are proud to call San Diego home, and through O Prego, we’re honored to bring a little piece of Portugal to Southern California. The much more desired sides of Falafel, Baba Ghanoush, or even kid friendly Fries, were not offered. Needless to say, my son ate his chicken and rice, but wouldn't touch his hummus. So, a Shawarma Plate and a Shawarma wrap ... dinner for two, not a ton of food, neither of us were all that impressed ... and it cost us over $40. Needless to say, with how everything tasted and what it took to get ... we won't be coming back. For the price it cost us, I think we'll stick with the far superior Aria up the street. Or, at the very least, try the Kebab Shop down the block.
