We were there this past weekend and it was great! Keep in mind the time between Oct 1-Nov 1st is their busiest time of the year so pack your patience! To break thinks down....both our friend and my husband stated that the bangers and mash were the best they've ever had! They also loved the stew. My friend's wife also raved about the shepherds pie. I had the warm beef. which was OK but nothing to write home about. A few pointers to keep in mind. As this is their busiest season, there is a limited menu and they will NOT split the check! Gratuity is added into the bill for large groups. All this info is clearly displayed so it wasn't an issue. You can not order double drinks...something to do with Massachusetts law....so my husband ordered a single and I ordered a shot....easy peasy. We were seated right away and while I'll admit we were warned that the kitchen was a little backed up, this was bad. It took over an hour from when we ordered for our food to get served to us. WE WERE STARVING. And we figured like most restaurants, soup would be served first which is why we all ordered soup! Especially with the kitchen backed up, we figured an appetizer would be a good idea. Nope. They came out an hour later with our food. So not only were we starving, but our table was incredibly crowded with plates. Also, the wait staff told us "just a minute or so" while we still waited over 15 minutes. No compensation for our wait, no apologies from our server other than her telling us again that the kitchen was backed up. We heard the hostess telling people the approximate time it would take their food to get served (2 hours at that point) which we wish she had said to us! Unreal. And while we were waiting, we asked for ANYTHING to eat (bread, fries, anything the kitchen could give us) and they said they had nothing which I think was BS. Went with my friend for the first time on Thursday, at 7pm. Had to walk past two people smoking right outside the door. Pretty dead inside, 2 tables taken and a few people up at the bar. Bartender saw us but didn't acknowledge us. We took a high table right in the middle of the place. Waited a good 5 minutes until the waitress came with menus. We both ordered the fish and chips and a Cisco pumpkin beer. Food arrived, but I had to ask for vinegar the next time the waitress walked by - pretty standard for fish and chips. Fish was mostly batter and air. Every time waitress came over she'd apologize for taking so long, blaming still having "October brain" even though it was decently quiet and over a week into November. Next day my friend told me she'd been up all night with a stomachache and nausea - I had the same exact symptoms. Unless you want to ruin your night, I can't recommend this place! Ok, so I came here with my friends around 2 pm, which fell into their brunch time. Three of my friends ordered the Belgian styled waffles with mixed berries and whipped cream. After at least an hour the food showed up. I hear from down the table "The audacity of this place! These are Eggo waffles!" But upon further inspection it was discovered these were indeed Great Value waffles. That and the implication of "mixed" means that there is more than one variety of berry. These waffles were served with two chopped up strawberries. If I wanted to eat this humble dish I could have gone to the store and made it myself and not paid 7 dollars. Made the mistake of going here for lunch on a busy October Saturday. There was no wait to be seated which was why we ate there. We were handed a limited "Halloween Menu." First off the soda was flat, and the iced tea was weak. We ordered nachos. They were "ok" We got a cheeseburger and fries to split since we had ordered the nachos. The outside of the burger was charred and was not the medium well we had ordered. We should have said something, and I probably would have, if that was all we had to eat, but we were already full from the nachos, so didn't bother. So this is my first review on Yelp. My experience at Oneill's was so horrible I was moved to share it. I have lived in Salem for about four years, and have been going to Oneill's just as long. It has always been a fairly average "Irish" pub. The food and service consistently average, an alright place for a beer and a burger, trivia, or the occasional Irish music. I went there tonight to watch game seven of the NBA Finals, it took about twenty minutes to get a round of beers even before the place got busy. The waitress rarely checked back and they messed up my food order. None of that was enough to ruin my evening. It took a meathead bouncer to do that. They started clearing the "dancefloor" with a few minutes left in the last game of the NBA finals. I don't know where these idiots are from, but the Celtics making it to the Finals is a pretty big deal. When the bouncer grabbed the back of my chair and told me to get up, I said I would gladly get up in thirteen seconds when the game was over. He was adamant that I move immediately, and so I did, totally astonished at how this place was treating patrons who had been there all night in order to make room for some horrible DJ. I promptly asked for the manager and informed her that despite being a regular customer I would never be back. You should do yourself a favor and follow suit. read more

STAY AWAY! Went for brunch. We should have know something was up when we walked in and every table was empty at 12:00 on a sunday..... We started by ordering drinks. The kids wanted Cokes. The waitress said "It's not really coke or pepsi, it's generic and it's pretty bad" Ok then. Shirley temples were ordered. After 25 minutes - no drinks. Finally the drinks showed up. The mimosa with flat champagne was served in a wine goblet. WTH? It's a full bar - they don't have a champagne flutes or bubbly bubbly?? Waitress disappears again and we have to flag down a hostess to get her so we can order. Remember, we're the only table. There are about 6 patrons at the bar and 3-4 waitress at the end of the bar looking at their phones. Time to order! Or I should say we TRIED to order as they seemed to be out of everything. Chocolate chip pancakes ? Out of chocolate chips. Grilled Cheese & tomato soup? out of Tomato soup. We order and wait. and wait. and wait. Food comes and it was not worth the wait. The "belgium style waffles" were straight up generic eggos with some random blueberries, strawberries and whipped cream. Waffles were cold. Grilled cheese was1 slice of american cheese & 1 slice of deli ham. The winner though was the "house made delicious corn beef hash". Looked like dog food. When questioned the waitress admitted it came out of a can as did the beef stew. Worse meal ever and the attitude was just as bad. When questioned about the discrepancies between the menu descriptions and what we received the waitress LITERALLY ran away. SMH. Do not go here to eat. O'neills sucks something awful..... If you live on the northshore you have inevitably ended up here at one time or another. I hadnt come here in probably 3 or 4 years and we were in the nighborhood so we swung in for a drink. Hoping that maybe it didnt suck as much as I remebered it sucking. Something about paying $5 dollar cover at shity bar really gets my ass. But anyways we go inside and minus the peppers and onions it was a complete sausage fest. Something sucks about making your way to the dance floor only to find a sea of blowouts.....there was absolutly no balance. I've never quite understood this place... Back when I was 21-22, they just started doing the Thurs-Sat night thing. At first, they had a DJ that played old school hip-hop, so even if you were annoyed by the girls in their Andre The Giant-style shirts (remember when girls all wore those stupid shirts with one shoulder strap?) that were pounding back Mike's Hard Lemonade, you could still get a decent drink selection for relatively decent money and hear some music that was fun. Then, and rather quickly, it changed. I don't recall when, but one weekend I went in and we got the DJ to play some P-Funk, then the next weekend it turned into dance/transe/techno nonsense. So every guys with white sneakers and a striped polo shirt was thrilled, but I sure as hell wasn't. Then they started making guys remove their hats, didn't let people in with sports jerseys on, even banished hoodies. After that they charged a cover. Yes, an 'Irish Pub', charges a cover. I remember it being like $2, then $5, now I hear they charge $10. $10 to go into a small L-shaped bar with almost no seating, shitty bar service, and a cramped standing area? Oh please, sign me up, I'm dying to go overpay for a Guinness, then have to piss in a urinal that has no dividers and the door is wide open. I'm fucking thrilled about that! No, I'm not bitter. In the off hours, you often find people bringing their kids in here. It's a bar! Their unsupervised little shits run around like annoying little lap dogs and ruin the good time for everyone else. I can give you directions to several McDonalds or other more child-friendly establishments that will keep your child from bumping my table every 10 seconds. I'm also a bit upset that this place never seems to show soccer or rugby. This is supposed to be an Irish pub, but they always have some shitty college sporting event on TV. Ever heard of Six Nations? Setanta television? It's not all bad. As others have pointed out, Trivia Night is a decent time. Sun-Wed at O'Neills is actually not too bad (if you avoid families). The menu isn't spectacular, but they have enough good offerings to make it worthwhile. One really good time to go there is on Sundays nights for karoke, not every Sunday night, but on those long weekends where everyone has Monday off. You can actually get seating, have a fun time getting boozed up with your friends, and then embarrassingly go up and sing 'White Wedding'. But for the sheer douchebaggery that O'Neills perpetuates from Thu-Sat, I cannot condone more than one start being awarded to them. read more

The outside looks like an Irish pub but the inside is more open and spacious. The had Magners on tap which was great. Music was sadly not Irish at all. They had a limited Halloween menu. My son had the Sheppards pie which was actually cottage pie as the meat was beef. It was tasty and seasoned well. Hubs had the fish and chips which he really enjoyed. I had the clam chowder which was nice and thick how I personally think it should be. We live in Maine and their chowder is thin like milk. This was stick to your ribs chowder. Friday night feature live Irish music. It's not very good Irish music but it is Irish. My beer was cold and tasty and pretty cheap. My food was hot and typical pub grub that can be found at any Irish pub in the state. It's done okay. My steak fries were pretty good but if you can manage to screw up steak fries there is no hope. The oddest thing about this place was the plethora of families with little kids in tow. Little kids allowed to run around the place bumping into things and standing on chairs. THIS IS NOT A GYMNASIUM OR A PLAYGROUND! It's a damn pub. Why do people bring their kids into a pub? I go to pubs to drink. Wow, I can't believe this place can be so different on other nights! Or maybe I can. I came here for an early dinner on a Sunday afternoon after checking out the Peabody Essex Museum. It wasn't just because there was a big rainstorm that afternoon, but I heard John Rockwell and Larry Young would be "hosting a traditional Irish music session" so I was like, ok let's eat here! When our small group walked in the door, the place was not very busy with some guys sitting at the bar watching the Sox game and a bunch of families with children gathered around the musicians. My first thought was, kids in a bar? What kind of parents are these people? I don't want to sit with kids! But it wasn't that bad. Technically, it is a pub & restaurant. I think these musicians play on Friday nights (I'm sure for a very different crowd) and they were playing everything from Beatles to Irish music to children's music. Some songs, it seemed like they were just singing as quickly as possible to the delight of all. My husband loves pubs, hates children, and even he felt like he could've stayed and drunk all night. Our waitress was very friendly and nice. The only downside was the false advertising on their menu - breakfast is not served all day after a certain time and they don't serve pizza (what kind of pub doesn't serve pizza?). We wanted to go for drinks on a Saturday night so we stopped in here as an alternative to Salem Beer Works. We were quite surprised how dead it was. Granted it was 930p but there were maybe 6 other people in the joint. We couldn't figure out why they would need 3+ bouncers until 11p rolled around and the place filled up with the young'uns! My date and I felt REALLY old when the kids with low-slung pants and the polo shirts with popped collars that Nick D. refers to below came strolling in. I can't believe you'd want to pay a cover charge since it's just a standard bar and the music isn't even that great. But I guess it's the cool place for the college kids on the North Shore. It was fun people watching at least and my beer was nice and cold on a hot summery night. Our waitress wasn't very friendly (don't think I detected even the slightest trace of a smile) and spent most of her time in the corner on her cell phone. She didn't seem to take it very well when my date asked if they had a food menu either. She replied disdainfully, "The kitchen closes at 9pm." I decided to stop by on a Friday to check out the live Irish music and it was a great experience. I wasn't expecting much from the musicians as they setup, but once they began what should have been an hour long stop turned into three. The Guinness was poured as it should be and the Ruben sandwich with fries was awesome. It was a festive and fun atmosphere and one that I'll definitely return to. I will note that once the 20 something crowd started to come in around 8:30pm it got quite noisy, but thankfully the music kept coming. I know after 9pm is for a young crowd and that is fine, but I'm much older than that now so I'll just stick to the early hours, at least in this establishment. Lastly, the children dancing in front of the band with their parents didn't bother me at all and added to the experience. read more

Oneills is your typical fun Irish pub. The food is good, the drinks are nice and strong and the Beef Stew is A1. They also have a lot of wines and beers on tap to choose from. It gets a little young on weekend with the Djs as Salem is a college town, but during the week they have great live music and trivia. To the person who mentioned how awful Dana was, that's a shame you got that impression, the only people she's mean to are people who are already drunk/on drugs or the riff raff she has to deal with from the homeless shelters and the halfway houses in the area, I'll assume you're probably one of them. Also, I'd get your eyes checked too, she's a hottie, and all the guys who go in there would have to agree with me. Otherwise, everyone behind that bar gives great, friendly service, and you'll definitely catch a very adorable authentic Irish accent from a few of them! read more

This is a decent place...drink-wise. Drinks are pretty good and not too badly priced (you'll stay under $9 per drink). The people sitting around the bar were friendly. It's a bit sketchy beyond that though. There is a dance floor that is overpopulated by odd men looking to go home with a prize. I don't know that I would go here again (I felt like even the low $5 cover charge was too much). My friends and I were just a bit too sketched out by the guys populating this place. My wife and I visited O'Neill's when we went to Salem in July. My wife loved the pink lemonade, the Cobb salad, and the Shepherd's Pie Rangoons. I had the same and it was delicious. Jamie our waiter was very helpful, he was quick with our orders and gave us much great information on Salem and things to do there. Wow. I'm 24 and too old for this bar after 10pm. It's amazing the shift that happens between 9 and 11pm here. It started out as a chill (mostly empty) Irish pub on a Thursday night. Just a few young professionals meeting to swap stories over beer and wine. Then the lights dimmed a bit. Everyone shared another round and the lights were even darker. By the time it came to pay our tab we could hardly see our bill. The music was no longer a dull murmur but a pounding beat and a DJ booth had been set up. I went to the bathroom when we first arrived and it was a simple, clean women's restroom. When I went to go before we left, I had to navigate myself through a crowd of ugg boots and mini skirts with sequins without touching any of the creepy dudes standing along the wall. There were various empty nip bottles scattered near the toilets. I looked in the mirror and thought, "I have work tomorrow. I am too old for this." Apparently my boyfriend and his buddies had many great nights here a few years ago. Many great nights they don't remember. Thankfully we are all past that phase (99% of the time) and there are plenty of other local spots to grab a brew. read more

Always received friendly service and great drinks and food. Let's cut to my recent experience... I came in on a busy night with my boyfriend, both of us completely sober upon arrival. We both ordered a beer and then my boyfriend decided to order a couple shots as well. I threw it back not realizing he ordered tequila, which I really dislike. I immediately felt sick and went to the bathroom just in case. I did gag while in my stall but didn't throw up. I came out, composed myself, washed my hands, and on my way out of the bathroom, the MALE bouncer was in the doorway of the bathroom and told me to get the fuck out of the bar and that I was too drunk to be there. I laughed in his face because I was most certainly not even buzzed. I explained what had just happened and he continued to usher me out of the bar, not even stopping when I said my boyfriend was sitting down already and had my purse and cellphone with him. He was very pushy and said he didn't care. My boyfriend saw finally and ran over and told him to stop manhandling me and asked what the hell was happening, to which the bouncer invited him for a fight if he didn't like it. He kicked us both out and said he'd call the cops if we returned. We were both completely stunned at what had just happened. I get it was a busy night, lots of people, but WTF? Never have I been treated that way and never have I been escorted out of a bar. We will never ever be back. read more

My update is based on their breakfast. Prior to this I gave them 4 stars for a 'reasonable facsimile' of Breakfast. They've upped their game and the quality is MUCH better then before. As for a regular bar? I'm not much of a bar person so, I can't comment. I've heard it can get rowdy and sometimes attracts dude-guy douche-bros. Suffice to say, those people don't go here for breakfast. If you're not familiar with Breakfast (which is what it's called...) it's eggs, back bacon (not streaky bacon like you get in America... and it's not CANADIAN BACON either...), baked beans, toast, Black and White pudding (don't ask, just eat it... then look it up. It's awesome), fries and sausages. It's brilliant heaven on a plate. Great for hangovers too. O'Neills does the best around so far. Let me know if you've had it elsewhere. I went to O'Neills on December 1st with a friend and our waitress had no clue what she was doing. When she came to our table my friend asked what the beers on tap where, what they had for bottle beers and if there was some kind of list of the drink selection. The waitress said there was no list and they had only had ONE beer on tap- Rolling Rock. I then asked the waitress if they carried any cider, she said no. We ordered drinks and she left. After coming to O'Neills before, I was fairly sure the information she gave was wrong. I went up to the bar (saw the had a HUGE selection of beers on tap) and asked the waitress specifically if they had Magners (a popular cider) she said yes and I told her I'd take that. Later my friend ordered a Blue Moon (one of the beers clearly on tap.) Throughout the night she rarely checked in to our table (even though we were her only one.) When we had friends join us, it took her at least 20 minutes to ask if they'd like anything. It was just overall very poor service. She finally asked us to close our tab as she needed to leave (without asking if we'd like anything before we closed it.) When we got the bill I left only a dollar and wrote on the back of the bill "Magners = cider, You have more than one drink on tap- Learn your bar." She took it, read the back and came back and yelled at the table! Never have I even seen a waitress yell at her customer. She said she was new, this was unfair and we were rude to write it. I immediately went to the manager and complained. Although the manager was very apologetic and offered me a free drink- as I was complaining, the waitress went right up behind the bar, next to the manager and began to complain about ME to her coworkers. It was so incredibly unprofessional and childish. I declined the offer of the free drink and simply said her waitstaff should learn their bar. Honestly, I don't care if a server is new. Have a list of the drinks handy. Know what a cider is. Don't tell me you have one drink on tap if even an idiot can clearly see there over 10. And obviously, don't yell at your customers when they recognize your poor service. read more

O'Neills, you do not impress me. $10 cover charge to enter a pub. You guys must have mistaken this for a night club! Lets see with simple drunken economics. $10 cover charge per person. I bring $50 with me, so I'm limited to $40 to drink with. I stick it in the back of my mind that I had to pay a cover charge to enter a PUB! I spent the remaining $40 on alcohol and then cut myself off. Now let's do this without a cover. I buy $50 worth of alcohol, I am having a good time and am probably plenty drunk. This is when the average person's credit card comes out. They make more money in the long run by not charging a cover. I, of course have a $20 hidden in my wallet behind my ID. I would have used that $20 to buy 3 more drinks + tip. Since they charged a cover, my hidden $20 remained my wallet and they made less money. Drop the cover charge, stop the wanna-be night club vibe. Play the music you play, but don't try to be a pretender. +5 stars for very awesome bartenders. They don't water down drinks, are very polite and social with you. Worthy of a tip. -5 stars for having a cover charge on a frigging pub. +2 stars for good music. No plus or minus stars for the hoes that come in. Every time I've come, I've come with a girl as my company so I don't prowl for the women. I have noticed all the bronzed, glitzy ladies here. You're going to a pub to drink and dance, keep the $200 shirt and $300 jeans at home....you aren't impressing anyone. The women here are sub-par. The prior reviewers are 100% with the skankrific votes. Just come, get drunk and dance. Don't expect to find classy women here. read more

It's Friday night and the Irish music is playing and we decided to try O'Neills for dinner after the makeover they had this past Spring. The food was over priced for the quality. I had the fish and chips which were saturated in fry-o-later grease. The fries were Luke warm. My gf had a cheese burger which was Avg and forgettable. I had 2 beers and she had a mixed drink. Total bill: $60! The worst part was the flies buzzing around us in the restaurant the entire time while we were trying to eat. Our mission was to engulf my food as fast as I could to escape the flies that were landing on us and our plates. With all the other great restaurants in Salem save your money and dine somewhere else and you'll have a better meal with enough money left over to pay for the cover charge at Club O'Neills. O'Neills might have had a makeover but some places are better bars than dining establishments. I'm giving O'Neills 5 stars because of the kickass bartenders. The DJ/dancing/pub-goers...eh, not so much. I live in South Peabody, so I like to come here when I want to save some cash, get home a little bit earlier, watch the people of the North Shore make fools out of themselves, and be close to home (before stopping at the Wendy's drive-thru in Lynn for a drunken fat kid sober-me-up burger). I came here with a friend a few months ago and we were sitting down at the bar, pounding drinks and catching up. I was starting to feel hazy, so I decided to close my tab. My friend, on the other hand, wanted one last shot. The bartender decided to make 2, charge her for only 1, and said "because nobody should ever take a shot alone", then handed me the second shot. We live in the neighborhood, so this is kind of a default place when in need of a Guiness and a sirloin burger, fish & chips or Shepherd's Pie,if you're not in a hurry. Food is average, the usual pub fare. Sunday nights 4-7 (thereabouts) there's live Irish music. It's very nice, quaint and cozy, and families and children join in the music and dance. Low stars are due to: food remains spotty and below par for Salem, which has so much more to offer in the area...and worst of all is the slow service. Painfully slow. Every damn time. I love this place and a regular here now. Good selection of draft beers, food is excellent and atmosphere great. Waitstaff outstanding and they also play live music (Traditional with fiddle and accordion) It's a nice afternoon out with family and kid friendly. O'Neills - Irish Pub Near Me - Salem, Massachusetts

Absolutely horrible experience. Booked a reservation a month in advance. Was called and told they could not accommodate a party of 10. My party came early in the afternoon ran over 400 in a bar tab. Was finally seated & told they could not offer food for 2 and a half hours & then was told by the OWNER to keep It down. We accidentally spilt a drink on our table and they didn't even help us clean up, just gave us a wet dirty rag and never came back. The owner was extremely rude. We spent the morning in Salem on our vacation. We tried to go to a breakfast place that was recommended on Yelp. The wait time was longer than our stomachs would allow so we left that place and stumbled into the waitress setting out the O'Neill's "we're open" a-frame. I saw "brunch" and "Irish" and quickly herded the gang in doors. The interior was attractive and there was a good selection of drafts. I ordered an Irish Coffee and it was a pretty good size (bigger than I'm used to). Meals ordered: - Eggs your way (scrambled) "Good. Eggs were especially good" - Corn beef hash (ordered by both guys) "Good, needed more potato" "Too much beef.
