What makes it special is watching the pastries being handmade right in front of you, which adds a level of freshness and craftsmanship that you can actually taste. The service was super fast and friendly. The pastel de nata came out perfectly, with that delicate flaky crust and warm custard that just hits differently when you know it was made moments ago. The espresso was equally impressive, rich and smooth, and the two together make for a simple but near perfect combination. If you are in the area, this is an easy and very satisfying stop.

The crust was super flaky and the tart was nice and warm out of the oven, but I didn't like the flavor of the custard. I did forget to add cinnamon to the top, but I don't think it would have helped me personally. The woman who stood next to me at the counter had a nearly orgasmic experience next to me, so it's obvious that my taste buds are apparently off. I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. I wouldn't skip going because of my personal taste buds, though. Enjoy it for yourself and let me know if you have a different opinion than I did!

When we arrived, they were just doing counter service and closing for the afternoon, but we were able to get a panini and we found local craft beer (which was pretty neat) and they let us eat on their patio. I had the Iberian sandwich which has Iberian prosciutto, flamengo cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickled red onion. It was the perfect sandwich to cure my hangry. When we went for lunch the day before we did not know that this café was also the breakfast part of our bed and breakfast. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast the next street over and both mornings a continental breakfast at this café was included. This is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had as part of the bed-and-breakfast. We were each served a portion of fresh fruit (which changed by the day), a boiled egg, a couple slices of ham and cheese, a pastel de nata, a basket of crossiants and rolls to share, and whatever you would like to drink. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, and a latte both days. Thankfully, like most places in Portugal they offer dairy alternatives. I honestly still dream about this breakfast. The wait staff on all of our trips were so friendly and helpful. It is really a beautiful set up and they have many things that you can purchase as well. I personally purchased a bowl shaped like a strawberry that I now have in my kitchen. This is definitely a stop. You need to make while in Sintra!

Overall, a decent place for food. Price was fairly reasonable

My favorite spot. Honestly it's one of those spots I don't want to write a review about, because I…read morewant to keep it a secret. But here goes, because "sharing is caring". Food/drinks are self-service here, which means you straight walk in to the cafe and order to your left. You'll take your drinks (coffee, etc.), and they'll bring the food out to you. They have a menu in both Portuguese and English, but the menu isn't always visible so just ask them for one and they'll pull one right up from the counter. I like their Dutch Sandwiches (I think those were what they called it), which is basically like flatbread sandwiches. The sandwiches and salads are prepared onsite, surprisingly - you wouldn't think they can actually cook much in such a small kitchen/counter space. Their pastries are ok too, but I don't think the pastries are prepared there. Note that "cafe" in Portugal basically means an espresso. You can also order your coffee decaf, but it'll still be an espresso. If you want something milder, like the American cup o' joe, ask for an Abatanado - I didn't see it on the menu in this cafe, but usually other Portuguese cafes have this option. They do have Garoto, which they call "latte", but really it's just the same espresso with maybe three teaspoons of milk (atleast it tasted that way) - don't expect to find the typical latte you would get in the States. If you're okay with very milky coffee (milkier than the standard American latte), order a Galao (usually about three quarters of the cup is milk) or Meia de Leite ("Half Milk" = half of the cup is milk). The cafe is pretty small, about 5~6 picnic tables outside, where you can see the Dune and the Ocean from afar. They always keep a bowl full of water for dogs, and hence my family calls it the "dog cafe". They also have indoor seating, but it tends to be a little warmer and a bit stuffy. Still, nice natural colors. Parking is a bit tricky here, especially the way out - which is typical of parking lots in Portugal, since they seem to have smaller individual car spaces than the ones in California usually do. Be careful not to scratch any other car on your way out! Tip: You can walk down the dune from this cafe. Just follow where the people are going, or follow the signs! It's a narrow walk, but quite nice. Many people either jog or walk with their dogs.

We had caught the ferry over to the "Southbank" on a gloriously sunny March Tuesday and were just wandering about in the vague direction of the Cristo Rei statue, enjoying the views and the local architecture. Around 2pm we found ourselves on the main drag of the pretty old town of Almada and we came upon Arantes & Morgado. It was packed to the rafters with local folk both young and old, with a motley crew waiting patiently by the door for a table to become available. A good sign if there ever there was one, we joined the queue and stood in line. There was a blackboard outside with the specials of the day chalked up but with my "vino tinto" grasp of the language and no mobile signal for googling purposes I was a bit scuppered. However, this was not a problem as we got into conversation with a fine local fella as we waited. It soon became clear that this was the best place to eat in Almada and was as cheap as chips. Much to our good fortune our pal informed us they had a local classic, the fishy pasta, on the menu this lunchtime. After a wait of around 15 minutes we were ushered in and shown to a basic formica table which was hastily furnished with a paper tablecloth, four upturned plates, some cutlery, bread rolls and a plate of cheese. With a little help from our new best friend, and his growing band of pals, we ordered one large portion of the massada de peixe to share between the four of us, a litre of water and a big jug of the vino verde. The friendly staff, who spoke no English, and who obviously didn't get a lot of tourists dropping by, nodded and smiled at our choice. Our vino verde came out in no time and was light, refreshing and had a good bit of fizz to it. While we were waiting we watched plate after plate of good looking food come out of the kitchen. B was loving the sight and smell of the thin crispy fried potatoes and was on the verge of ordering a portion when a big rustic "casserole" dish, full to the brim with the massada de peixe, was placed in the middle of the table along with a serving ladle. Well it looked good, smelled divine and tasted even better. Other than the melt in the mouth prawns and some squid I have no idea what types of fish this dish contained but there was a good selection and plenty of it. As instructed I added some piri piri sauce to my portion which gave it a nice kick. Although designed to feed two people this big dish was plenty for all four of us and we only just managed to finish the lot. I had a good, strong cafe to finish my meal and we got the bill. I've posted up a picture because it's a sight to behold - four hungry people wonderfully fed and watered for 14.60 euros!! We said our goodbyes to the lovely staff and the very friendly locals and made a mental note to return here straight way on our next visit to the great city of Lisboa.
