It was not crowded. I came here because I wanted to buy lychee and bring it back to Oahu. I figured it would be cheaper because there's more farms on the Big Island. The lychee was $9 for a pound and they were really big; lots of meat and the seed was small. Most of the vendors here are cash only. I was mad about the parking because it costed $10 for 1 hour in the "Royal Parking." It was after I paid on my phone that I saw another parking lot offering 90 minutes free to kama'aina (Hawaii residents) by PARKLINQ. The farmers market parking should be free for everyone... how much time are you really going to spend at this little farmers market?! I was done shopping in 30 minutes so the $10 was such a rip off and what sucked was that there was no street parking; all the stalls were taken. If you're staying at the hotels nearby and coming here by foot, it's great but by car, I'd suggest going somewhere with free parking.

We were able to try a few things that, surprisingly, aren't easy to find back home in Southern California. Beyond the produce, the market had a great mix of vendors selling all kinds of local goods, crafts, snacks, and other interesting finds. It wasn't just fruits and vegetables, which made it a fun place to wander around and take in the local flavor. What stood out most, though, was the tone of Hilo itself. The people were laid back, happy, and welcoming in that very Hawaii way that makes you want to slow down and enjoy where you are. Really nice place to visit while in Hilo. Definitely recommend.

I was happy to get to try a couple of samples from some of the vendors and some educated me on a lot of different things that I didn't know about the island. There are multiple species that you don't ever see outside of Hawaii or often at least. Luckily, everyone loved it and walked away saying it was one of their favorite parts of the trip! Keith was our guide and is not only is he hysterical with his light hearted (and well timed) comedic injection, but he's clearly passionate about the farm and highly knowledgeable about the entire farm to shelf process. It was such a breath of fresh air and honestly, his delivery of the tour information is what kept everyone so engaged and interested. We were able to crack our own macadamia nuts and eat them fresh, tried 100% kona coffee and even learned how to taste chocolate like a real cocoa connoisseur! It was lovely and a highlight of our trip indeed. The gift shop was also great and had an awesome selection of chocolate to purchase and bring home to share with friends. I highly recommend the tour, it's something you'll never forget!

And it was abut 2 pm on a Thursday, which seems like a reasonable time for a place like this to be open for business. Disappointing.
