*I have spent many days over the years in every nook and cranny of the BI and this was one of my favorite stops *Barney was super cool and open about his farm and products, amazing story of what he and his wife have built, you must stop here if it is open *Kau Coffee is coming into it's own, you want REAL mac nuts, STOP HERE, trust me, I am drinking it this week and eating those amazing nuts and loving it *And Barney, if you are reading this, get back to JF with her one star below, pretty sure there is a crossed wire somewhere. Mahalo!

"Hawaii's Best Coffee." We thought of the movie Elf when we saw the sign, but come to find out, he has indeed won the award for H's best coffee. Go figure. The macadamia nuts are pretty awesome too.

During our travels we found Ailani Orchards. Stopped in for a tasting and left with coffee, dehydrated macadamia nuts and macadamia nut butter and nut butter with white chocolate. The dehydrated nuts are amazing. So fresh and unsalted that you can really taste the nut itself. The coffee is quite good, it really can be drank without any added cream or sugar. The host was so helpful and knowledgeable that it made for a great experience.

Coffee trees where beans are grown fresh

Ailani Orchards has exceptional coffee, macadamia nuts, and honey. It's a small mom and pop shop off the beaten path where you can see exactly where your coffee is coming from. There's something exceptional about seeing exactly where your favorite drink is coming from. In fact, you can see the very pod it comes from. Behind the quaint rectangular shelter where the cash register and the products are displayed, you can see rows of coffee plants and a hill of luscious green behind as you enjoy your coffee in this peaceful coffee shop. The best part of the experience by far was the conversation with the locals as they helped us find our way to some beautiful stops along the island.

I first came across Ka'u local buzz coffee and Paradise Meadows a couple of years ago and decided…read morethat this was the best coffee I've ever had. Same for the Mac Nuts. I immediately subscribed to their newsletter so I could keep up to speed on what they where offering. In a recent trip to Hawaii, we were finally able to visit in person and it was a fun experience. Enthusiastic staff, lots of laughter, delicious fruit slushies, Art Gallery with featured local artists, penny the pig, baby ducks, parrots that would squawk at you until you engaged in conversation. Premium Kau Coffee, Macnuts, chocolate, short bread, slushies, pizza (on the day we were there) made by two Italian guys. Yes please! After we gorged on free samples and margarita pizza, we went on a shopping spree at the well stocked gift shop (not sure if that's the correct term, maybe farmstand?). Since we spent a certain amount on goodies, a discount was given along with free shipping to Alaska (what?!?). It makes me so happy just knowing that places like this exist. My only regret about stopping is that because we were in go, go, go mode to get to a birthday party, we didn't spend nearly enough time here as I would've liked. Next time!

Grab a bite from the food truck or enjoy the samples in the store. The macadamia nuts are absolutely addictive, and the thoughtfully crafted honey is just as incredible. We left a generous tip for our sample guru and went home with bags of macadamia nuts and a variety of honey. Everyone was so friendly and knowledgeable, and I loved learning how the honey develops its unique flavors. Best of all, it feels great to support local farmers!

This was one of the stops on the way to the volcano. It was recommended by a coworker of mine, so I…read morewas glad the stop was part of our tour. They're known for their sweetbread and malasadas, but they also have hot food and ice cream. We shared one of their pork platters. It was pretty good. Pork was super tender! There were 2 portions of pork, which seemed a lot, but I was left wanting more. We also got one guava malasada. This one is just their flavored sweet bread, coated with sugar, no filling. It was so light, fluffy, and delicious! Not heavy or oily. Dare I say these are better than Leonards in Waikiki? I regretted just getting one, because getting in that line again to order more would take too long. Oh that's another thing... Your mindset needs to be on island time because you will wait more than 10 minutes for your food. The place is small, but the property is huge. All dining is outdoor in their patio and two gazebo-like structures. There are two lines to place your order, which helps with the crowd: one by the main door, and the other by the patio. If you like up by the main door, you'll find all their sweet bread loaves, rolls, and snacks. If you line up by the patio, you'll find their pastry case. Either way, you're doomed to pick up more than you came there for. This place is a must! Make the drive. It's so worth it!

We asked for the custard-filled malasadas and the aunties in front ranted "why everyone calls it custard, it's not custard, it's vanilla" in a very annoyed voice. We also felt a little rushed while ordering, which caught us off guard. I was expecting a little more aloha and a little less hurry. Now the malasadas? Oh my goodness... absolutely worth the trip. Call it vanilla, call it custard--I honestly don't care because it was delicious. Soft, fluffy, filled with creamy goodness. I'd happily come back for the malasadas. Hopefully next time the aloha is as warm as the pastries. Mahalo!
