I actually had no intention of leaving a review, just came here to confirm my suspicions, though…read morenow I feel I should weigh in given the other negative experiences (and the plumber's baffling response to Erin B.). Agree with the concept of grifting. I paid this plumber thousands of dollars to do basic plumbing work in our new co-op, and knew I was being vastly overcharged but did it because he was known to our contractor and building. But here's the RUB: As part of the work, we had the plumber install a water line for an icemaker, and another completely shady outlet, AJ Madison, delivered the wrong refrigerator -- meaning the day BEK Plumbing was finishing work in the kitchen, no icemaker could be installed. Fast forward six weeks -- we finally get the correct refrigerator delivered, and just to come back and finish the work we'd paid for, BEK/Dzema wanted $550. TO HOOK UP AN ICE LINE THAT WE'D PAID HIM FOR. It's so egregious it's almost funny. We were left in the lurch with the wrong refrigerator and he wanted to FURTHER PROFIT off our hardship. Meantime, the dishwasher he installed leaks and doesn't work properly, but in a MILLION YEARS I'd never let this grifter back into our apartment. Clearly with these "business" practices and lack of ethics he's struggling -- and he should. Constantly trying to cheat people catches up with you eventually.

I would not recommend working with Jack Bek…read more I needed a shower cartridge replaced, and the experience was frustrating from start to finish. He cancelled on me twice with next to no communication. When I was able to reach him by phone, he was argumentative and dismissive. I came away feeling that my job was an inconvenience and far less important than the other projects he had going on. After repeated delays and ignored phone calls, I finally told my superintendent that I was no longer interested in working with Jack and would find someone else. Ironically he became available within the hour. What made the experience especially disappointing is that I had hired him for a kitchen plumbing job the year before. I expected a returning customer to be treated with at least a basic level of professionalism and respect, but that wasn't my experience. Poor communication, unreliable scheduling, inflated pricing, and an unprofessional attitude. I would recommend looking elsewhere.

We hired A Real Good Plumber (Paul Shay) in July 2026 under a signed $4,000 contract to restore gas…read moreservice to our three-family building in the Bronx - a building sitting without gas, with tenants displaced. The signed contract required a $2,000 "startup payment," which we paid, and included filing the required LAA with the NYC Dept. of Buildings, which he confirmed in writing would be filed within five business days. Twenty-nine days later, the LAA was never filed. Instead, after a site visit, he sent new contracts nearly tripling the price - then claimed the new price was "in addition to" the signed contract, and finally claimed our $2,000 startup payment was actually a "site visit fee," something that appears nowhere in any document he wrote. We terminated for non-performance and demanded the refund; as of this review it has not been returned. Every claim in this review is supported by the signed contract, payment records, and his own emails. Homeowners in urgent situations: get every commitment in writing and watch for re-pricing after the deposit.

After dealing with two other plumbers who don't return calls, show up late or not at all, etc. it was so refreshing to work with someone reliable. He provided a fair quote to switch out a bathroom vanity sink with a new one I'd purchased after looking at pictures of my existing plumbing and the new pedestal I needed installed. Note that his quotes are set for a job including materials, not the usual time + materials situation you see with most contractors. Again, he knows what he's doing and the transparency is a breath of fresh air. The morning of our appointment he showed up 20 minutes early, focused on finishing the work, got it done within the expected window (this included a quick run to Home Depot for supplies), and left the bathroom looking tidy. Robert was polite and answered questions about other work I might need to have done in the future - I wouldn't hesitate to call him again for those projects. While it wasn't included in my initial quote, he was kind enough to call helpers to bring the old sink down the stairs of my walkup building. Thanks for a job well done!
