Went on a Saturday night and sat down for 10 min and none of the bartenders greeted us. Someone came up to us finally and she brought us our drinks. Then tried to order another round but one of the bartenders kept ignoring us until I waved my hand and said hello, and she said "excuse me". I wanted to get her attention to get service, didn't think it was an offense at all, but she seemed offended to take an order. So I'm confused. And on the contrary, I felt ignored and not welcomed . Came here and enjoyed ourselves at this neighborhood bar. It's totally what one should be: cheap drinks and laid back atmosphere with intoxicated regulars. O'Donnell's isn't as crowded and one reason is because it's kind of hard to get to. For one thing, it's not real close to a train station, and it's not in that popular of an area. The drinks are real cheap mostly. Bars like this aren't as common anymore. It seems many like the fancy drinks that are expensive. They don't do that here. For those cheaping out, come here for the drinks. It's $3 for an Old Style. Certainly not the cheapest bar, but it is for around here. The cocktails aren't much more. Apparently they have food but all they had were frozen pizzas the last time here. The bar is pretty clean even though it looks grungy and nasty. Has a real chill atmosphere. It's a good place for watching games. This is on the Northwest Side in Mayfair at the corner of Elston and Keebler, with the closest public transportation being the Montrose CTA station. read more

Went for the open mic, but didn't stay after the bartender started cussing at me over wanting to tip her (via venmo because they don't take tips on card) all at once instead of several venmo transactions. Of all the things to start raising your voice over, getting tipped shouldn't have you dropping F bombs at a customer. Got one drink and no further were offered. We left, I can find other places and if this is how she treats people, you should too. read more

Love the bartender Adelle, she's always on top of making sure everyone has what they need, and she creates a fun environment where we can all laugh and joke around with each other. She knows her way the bar and if you're curious about a certain drink she'll do her best to make it happen and knows great substitutes if they're out of something (I personally have seen random shots on facebook and she's either made them happen or substituted something and still made something great). She makes the atmosphere there and is a big part of the reason I keep coming back. read more

Worst bar ever. Don't go here. Whatever they call a comedy show is not a comedy show. Same group of old people hogging up the bar. Not welcoming at all. The big heavy set tall woman bartender very rude and demands cash tips or for you to venmo her. Very rude on top of that. read more

I REALLY like O'Donnel's. It's a great neighborhood bar. It's priced like a dive but it's really nice and clean. The servers are excellent. Terry, the owner, is a very nice lady. They are extremely dog friendly and keep a stack of toys in the corner for the pups. They aren't a restaurant but they will make you a frozen pizza for cheap. Also, they open early for us day drinkers. The clientele is very laid back and if you're there more than an hour you will more than likely receive at least 1 chit for a free round. This can get dangerous as I always reciprocate the favor, and sometimes I end up drinking far more than had been planned. I live in edgewater but I go out of my way to come here. O'Donnell's is home for every man. If you think about everything you'd like in your neighborhood bar, and you happen to find yourself in O'Donnell's - just take a step back and realize that you're right where you need to be. People may ask me why I live on the northwest side and my default answer would be, "Because the food is awesome and it's one of the most diverse spots in the entire United States. Nope, nope nope, I've changed my mind - the northwest side also has some of the best neighborhood gems this side or any side of the City of Chicago. I came in here on a Tuesday night to play my weekly dart league versus the opposing team sponsored by O'Donnell's. Great players, hell I admit it - I lost, that's how good they were. The bar also had the sponsored softball team coming in for their obligatory post-game chill session. This bar was chock full of people (boys and girls) on a Tuesday night drinking $10 buckets of beer and $2 drafts of Bud (ie this place is CHEAP!) Now when you think of cheap, you might think of a dive, heck - you might even think of someplace dangerous! Not at O'Donnell's, it is full of northwest siders loading up B96 and 90's rock on the jukebox and the bar is just plain nice and is newly renovated. But...let's say you do have to take a step outside. What would you find outside? You'd find not one, not two, but three backyards with no fences because the bar owns the properties right next to it! There are two patio tables with a giant canopy tent for rain, cornhole to play, a BBQ grill, and enough space to play two full teams of volleyball. This place is massive!!! You don't play sports? Fine! Come on in and enjoy their flatscreen TVs all over the place. Seriously, I think I have found a new favorite bar and my head is spinning thinking about the next time I'm going to have to stop on by again. The food menu is less than some people would like but you got your staples - burger, chicken sandwich, Italian beef, beef combo and I don't care what else they've got because the burger and chicken will hit the spot. If you don't like O'Donnell's you probably don't belong on the northwest side and are definitely not from these neck of the woods. And if you don't like it I will buy you a beer, that's how we roll. A TRUE locals bar. There's always a group of men here, ready to talk you in to the late night. They always know who's new, and I've seen them all act a bit shady towards some new dudes. But in general, nice hardworking guys hang out here. The bartenders are fun and very kind. The food is unremarkable bar food, but it's cheap. The jukebox is fun, and the women's bathroom doesn't have a door separating the toilet from the main entrance. It's actually hilarious when you're drunk. Nice patio, too. read more

When I first walked in I wondered if we walked into an American Legion by accident as there were 7 middle aged + men sitting scattered around the horseshoe bar but no worries it's just a great local bar! The pros: the beer is cheap, the bartender is friendly and there's a jukebox and golden tee in the corner. The cons: it's open air so sitting at the bar you get a little sweaty. Makes me think I'm back in Mexico but without the umbrellas in my drink. I read a review that there were no stalls in the women's bathroom but be reassured that there are stalls so you can now pee in privacy! read more

Went there for the Super Bowl and was pretty impressed. They have a back restaurant part that looked huge in addition to their big bar area. The beer prices was reasonable and the atmosphere great for a sports event. The only problem I had was the bathroom was in disarray and pretty nasty, but considering that 98 percent of the packed bar was male that could be expected. read more

Been to O'Donnell's/El-Kees with my wife and her friends after several Cubs games. We stopped in on a whim while heading back to the house after a ballgame one day and it has been tradition ever since. Overall a decent bar with little fanfare. The selection is somewhat simple and straight-forward, but they do serve an excellent Jack-n-coke. Prices are definitely do-able and you won't go broke here. The crowd is fairly diverse and there is a nice mix of both young and old throughout. We have come across a nice, but goofy young guy the several times we have been to the bar. He has the most menacing pair of eyebrows I have ever seen. Also, he seems to have something against Cubbie fans. My wife thinks he is special. Mostly, the crowd is pretty polite and laid back though. Most recently we have tried the new grill that opened in the back of the bar. Food is decent and includes typical bar food such as burgers, wings, etc. The bacon cheeseburger is excellent. All in all, I would suggest looking elsewhere if you have the chance, but O'Donnell's is good if you enjoy stopping in at random pubs. O'Donnell's is a neighborhood bar. Though what makes it special is that the bartenders and patrons care about each other. There are great drink specials.
