My wife and I were first introduced to O'Donal's Nursery thanks to a Yelp Elite event and wanted to return. Today was that day with them hosting a Mother's Day pop up with Eighty 8 Donuts and the newly opening Mini Bar coffee trailer. It's the perfect time of year to visit here with Maine finally getting warmer and nicer weather. Despite the somewhat rainy and gloomy start to the day the sun has come out and so have so many people. They have a large parking lot but it's been very full. If you are looking for any plant this is the place to visit! From the smallest options including Bonsai trees and succulents all the way up to trees and more. You could spend hours here walking down and looking at each and every plant they have for sale! We even had a great time just browsing and looking at all the beautiful plants. They had many members of staff who were putting more plants out but all willing to help with any customers who needed it. I thought prices were reasonable for what they were. Some were high but it was for large or non common things. Besides the plants they also have an indoor shop with bird feeders, feed, books, and more. Extremely well maintained and thought out business with phenomenal staff and an incredible variety of plants for sale. A true paradise for those with a green thumb! read more

O'Donal's does great with their displays. Staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. Their selection is diverse and there's always something interesting to check out. They are a bit pricey though so unless they have what I'm looking for, I end up just browsing. Hopefully they keep doing a good job in maintaining their inventory. read more

What do I love MOST here? 1) The staff! I'm not sure you're ever going to meet people who care as deeply as these folks do. Any question or concern you have about absolutely anything related to local flora/succulents/bonsais, or a troublesome indoor plant you have at home (... that they didn't even sell you), or about what grows best in xyz condition inside or outside - they're gonna know. And they're not gonna lead you astray! 2) The property! This has been a nursery for over a century. It's now an employee-owned cooperative.. There's a garden center stock with tools and supplies for home gardeners, as well as gifts, books, pottery, and more; this sits on their 50+ acres - 10+ of which is open to the public (ask for a map when you show up! No really, this'll make your experience even better!). You could absolutely make coming here an event: bring your iced coffee and just meander the shrubs, bushes, trees, and perennials. You'll even find the occasional bench or Adirondack chair inviting you to take it all in. I bought a really healthy Sansevieria here last winter, and it's thriving! I for sure will be buying my future houseplants here (they also offered some free advice on my Trader Joe's rubber tree plants which I appreciated). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to buy my herbs and veggies here for this summer's raised beds - did I come too late? While the options were plentiful in mid-May, by the end of May there were no herbs or veggies left; just loads of flowers. Maybe they were in between stock? I get nervous planting super early, because our spring weather has become so unpredictable, so it was a bummer to have to go elsewhere for those things this year. Maybe next year I'll be able to get my garden plants here! read more

Went there the other day to get hens & chicks succulents. Great selection and staff was friendly and helped me with all questions on how to plant, how to split them, etc. Staff is knowledgeable and makes you feel appreciated and not like an afterthought. Prices are reasonable. The quantity of different types of plants is amazing! They have everything from herbs to bonsai, to grasses, flowers, and trees. Highly recommend! Service. Years ago, I hired a garden designer to come to the house and give me some ideas. It was 100 bucks which felt like a as a lot at the time but worth it If I got clarity about what to do/plant. I had an expectation that she would tell me what she could create for me and I would hire her to Create the garden and buy the plants from my favorite nursery where she worked. I'm not saying her name to be kind. That's not what I got and I made a phone call and said gosh I really didn't feel like that was worth the money. That's not what I was expecting. Nothing came of that phone call and I let it go. No big deal. O'Donnell's nursery is my happy place. It is where I have gone numerous times every season to buy all of my indoor and outdoor plants and needs for a decade. In the winter time I go and buy things out of their gift shop just to support a local business and help them stay afloat. Well, my husband passed away and I have a celebration of life happening this summer and I revisited having them come and give me some ideas on how I can freshen up the gardens so it best when everybody comes to the COL. Well that designer is still mad at me and refuses to help. She doesn't do business with me. Or give me another designer there to take her place and keep that $$ for their company. I could understand if I had yelled at her or did some sort of name-calling or some sort of dysfunctional behavior or Jerry Springer anything... I would totally get why she wouldn't want to help me. Professionally this isn't what I expected. I just think there's more to the story and I don't know what it is. The O'Donnell's nursery is like having a mini botanical gardens right here in southern Maine. It is amazing to walk through their property. I love their offerings. I love their staff. It's just a really cool place. And I love it that now the employees own it. That was really cool of the owner to make that happen. What I don't like is unprofessionalism. It's just wrong and it feels yucky. I have never in my 61 years of life have ever had anyone not want to do business with me. That is just so unusual. I'm sharing this because I think it is a business defect. And if you are doing a garden or wanting garden designs, you need to know that there are consequences for saying you are displeased. Evidently. So I say go there! Enjoy the beauty and serenity of just walking through the gardens. But if you're going to hire Garden plans of any kind just before warned! Again, if I had been the B word in any way shape or form I would get it, but I wasn't. It's not who I am. And I feel so sad and disappointed. She suggested I go to... I really haven't gone anywhere besides O'Donnell's so not sure where to go. Sometimes things aren't fair. And when they aren't, we should tell so we can guard ourselves from what happened to other people from happening to us. I what happened to me does not happen to you. We shouldn't be punished for telling a what works and what doesn't after we hired them to help communication is key. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day in the 80's. That being said I decide to stop by Dunkin Donuts and order a large iced coffee and go to O'DONAL'S NURSERY. It's one of my favorite places to walk amongst the nicely landscaped gardens and maybe buy a plant or two. One of my favorite areas is the rose garden. Every color of rose is in bloom and the fragrant smell of roses fills the air. This is a great place to buy all your gardening items. The selection of shrubs, trees and plants is amazing. I also want to mention that they have a senior and Military/veteran discount. Plan on excellent customer service from the many employees that you will see in the shop and in the nursery area. read more

Great selection and sectioned by "shade, sun, pond plants. They have shrubs, trees & annuals as well as hanging baskets. There's quite a variety of items inside that are very interesting but my focus is generally with plants outside. Senior discount ever day is wonderful & staff very helpful. read more

Hit or miss with service. The good is they have a huge selection. The bad is some of the blunt officious staff. I've had staff there be super helpful and friendly and I have also experienced outright rudeness. Have ordered thousands of dollars worth of plants and trees. Issues with tagging. Left a tree out in the bright sun and it suffered severe leaf burn when delivered. Last year there were diseased wilted leafless eastern redbuds tagged at 500 bucks for sale. Basically a large tired twig for 500. A kind staff member agreed that it should not even be on the lot. When you call to inquire about plants (that are listed in their online inventory) they sort of insist you pre buy without seeing the plant and put it "on hold" ....it all feels a bit salesy and desperate for a garden center. "We can take your order right now over the phone!" I asked what taking an order entails. The answer - a payment. If you demur and say I am just inquiring then you get a cooler reception. A kind person offered to call back on availability after I said I wanted to see the plant before paying over the phone, but right after I hung up I received a callback from an official person at the center demanding I pay if I wanted to receive a call on availability. I had to explain that I don't need a call that I could just as easily go to the center which I planned to anyway. Lesson learned. Don't call to inquire availability just drive all the way to Gorham and take your chances. Pretty strange response. Estabrooks on the other hand took my call told me what's available and said they would call when the plants I was looking for came in. Did not ask for prior ordering, deposits or payments. Just good friendly customer service. Disappointed in 0'donals. read more

First the many positives. O'Donals has an extensive stock of well maintained plants, shrubs and trees that are organized into logical sections. It's still easy to get lost, in a good way, among the many and varied plantings. The staff are lovely and super helpful. The negatives I experienced: I put a small tree on hold on the Friday of the weekend we were in the area. I mentioned to two staffers that I was planning to come back the next day, Saturday. However, when we arrived the premises were locked up tight. I called Monday, and was told that they didn't have staff to stay open on weekends. Unfortunately the signs and the website were not updated. When we came up again two weeks later and did get our little 175$ tree, I am 99% sure it had not been watered the whole time it was on hold. Many of the lower branches had died. read more

Located along Route 114 Gorham way, this is a great place to go and look for garden enhancement. A huge variety and a large piece of land on which to display everything. We were purchasing several plants to have installed on her property and this was the place our landscaper specifically named as who they love to work with. Having spoken to several staff members, I can certainly understand why. Because our items were purchased in advance to be installed by a landscaping company they've worked with quite often, they were able to hold on to the items for us until installation day. Which is very helpful because you know the plants are going to be appropriately maintained and cared for. We have never purchased plants like these before, so I can't say whether or not these exact ones we're well priced. I did pick up a couple other items for my personal herb gardening project and I thought the prices for those items were quite reasonable. Definitely somewhere I would go back to for future gardening or Landscaping. read more

I was in desperate need of a Magnolia for my wife for Mother's Day. This was the only place that had any nice ones left on short notice. The absolutely awesome lady that greeted me when I was walking among the various trees, plants, garden stuff looking clueless and lost was so nice. She asked me if I was lost and I said yes. I told her I needed a magnolia and I had no clue what the heck it was. She laughed and said follow me. Let's go find you the perfect magnolia. 5 minutes later I was standing in line to pay. O'Donal's is a larger nursery that up until recently I had never been to. It stood out to me for its extensive varieties of bushes, trees and good selection of flowers that were well organized. Inside they have a shop that has the expected gardening related items, but also things that would be great gifts. We ordered a yard of black mulch and 1 yard of compost and it was delivered within 1-2 days in two separate loads since they were different products to prevent mixing (Unfortunately that means two delivery fees). Overall the quality of the mulch was excellent, far easier than lugging bags from the store and well worth it. When the compost wasn't what we expected we called O'Donals. We were really impressed by how quickly the manager got back to us about our concerns, even coming the next day to look at the product, walked our garden and even contacted the product manufacturer to ask questions. Even though the product was in fact correct, he issued us a gift card for a full refund of the compost and delivery fee since we weren't as happy with the product. You just can't get this kind of service from many businesses anymore. If you haven't been to this nursery I recommend it. read more

I can say enough great things about this nursery, it is the best! I have purchased plants from O'Donals over the years and have aways had good success. I have moved further north near Yarmouth but still traveled down to the Scarborough Gorham line to purchase my plants. The people working in the nursery are so knowledgable and helpful, and willing to stay with you until all your questions are answered. The quality if plants is excellent, and so are the prices. Today I purchased two large trees, and just happened to ask a guy walking by for some help and advise. He was more than willing to assist me, and answered all of my questions. He even loaded and tied the trees into the back of my truck. Turns out this helpful guy was the owner, Jeff O'Donal. He was a pleasure to deal with and so unassuming and genuine. I was desperately searching for 2 potted hydrangeas for my sister's memorial service. Everywhere had left theirs out in a huge downpour the day before. O'Donals had beautiful specimens to choose from and the ladies kindly wrapped the pots in purple foil for me for free. read more

It's a long haul from where I live, I skip one other nursery in So. Portland and drive all the way to O'Donal's Nursery instead because the place is amazing, the staff is knowledgeable and most important of all, because the service is topnotch, friendly and I always feel welcome! read more

I used to think this was a high quality, customer service centered business. Not anymore. I bought $200 of shrubs and frens from them in early Sept of 2018. 3 of the perrenial shrubs died. They were all zone 5. I had a credit card receipt of purchase and the purchase tabs from the plants themselves. I called first and was told NONE of them would be a credit. They only guarenttee for that growing season...for me that was Sept and Oct till frost. I have never heard of such a limited policy in all my purchases from other nurseries over the years. When I challenged her on this she replied' we dont cover some woody plants at all'. Home Depot and Lowes do better but I try to shop local. Done with O'Donals. I'll take my next $200 purchase elsewhere. Buyers beware! read more
