Number Nine was everything I was looking for on NYE. My partner and I were visiting DC for the long weekend and after a day of checking out the city, we weren't looking for anything too crazy to ring in the New Year. Number Nine was just crazy enough. We were able to grab a seat upstairs and countdown to 2018 with several dozen of D.C's finest gentlemen. There was also a party going on downstairs as this is a two-story establishment, but we didn't venture down there. For NYE, Number Nine did the mandatory champagne toast but also did a music video countdown which set the stage for dancing the night away. This is a fun, welcoming bar and I thoroughly enjoyed being a fly on the wall there. We were the only lesbians when we arrived and the night was pretty consistently all men with a lady here and there. We weren't able to find any ladies bars in D.C (somebody should open one) but we will definitely return to Number Nine in the meantime when we're back in D.C. read more

Probably the best bar I've been to in DC. It's wonderful, alive, and very up beat. The music is great, fair prices on the drinks, very welcoming staff, and bartenders are an absolute delight. The 2-for-1 drinks for happy hour (which goes until 9pm) are spectacular--the mojitos are strong, minty, and made with care. Number 9 has an upscale feel with its ambient lighting and comfortable booths (it's in Logan Circle after all) but doesn't have (at least not for happy hour) the ridiculous prices you'd find at more bougie places. Yes, this is a gay bar. No, I am not gay. Those 2 facts are probably pretty critical to 2 different subsets of readers considering this bar is brand new. That led to my mistake, of not doing thorough reading and research before deciding to go to happy hour here yesterday. I admit it, I skimmed right past the 5 star reviews and headed over to their stylish website advertising a happy hour that runs an exceptionally long 5 to 9pm, and includes 2 for 1 of any drink that entire time. The drink menu actually sounded quite appealing too, as it consisted of more than just rail liquor, house wine and crap beer at places I would normally associate such a happy hour deal with. So, in all my excitement to get a nice buzz worked up prior to a dinner date with my good friend I headed over to Number 9 to see what it was all about. They were just opening up the huge windows that let in the outside light as I walked up, and I'm pretty sure I was the first patron of the day, which precluded me from realizing what type of establishment I was entering. The décor here is superb, and the ambiance is one that really lends itself to sitting down and sipping a cocktail. Dim lights, clean lines, dark and manly brown hues throughout, it's like they took the inside of an old ship and made it modern. So I pulled up one of the barstools and took a look through the drink list, full of top shelf liquors, a nice surprise. It was a nice warm Spring afternoon, so I thought a mojito would be the perfect way to cool down and get refreshed. Carlos makes a mean mojito, seriously one of the best I've had in DC, if not the best. I would honestly come back here and endure the slight awkwardness just to have him mix me some more drinks. About 20 minutes in it was clear to me that I was the odd man out here, although to either my luck or my misfortune I usually dress the part during the day, so nobody really noticed. Luckily for me I can hang with just about anyone, and have had many gay friends most of my entire life, so either way it doesn't really bother me in the slightest. An hour in and there's more meat in here than Wagshal's, and I'm working on my second drink, a Dark & Stormy, that while made extra strong, wasn't as tasty as the mojito. I probably would have actually ordered a gimlet, since they do it with Hendricks by default, but I was a bit worried about carrying around a martini glass here. I probably could have hung around another hour an downed another 2 drinks while waiting on Ashley to make it over to Logan Circle, but with the ratio of men to women already hovering around 50 to 2 I decided to take my tipsy ass next door to Logan Tavern and have a snack while I wondered who I probably knew in 9 that was likely curious what I was doing there. If I was a gay dude, this would easily be a 5 star bar (for me anyway, I can't profess to say what qualifies as good from that side), but considering that I can only take advantage of part of the appeal of Number 9, it falls just shy of that. (Just to be clear, as I keep getting messages from gay guys complaining: No, I am not REDUCING my rating BECAUSE it's a gay bar, I just have no idea what a "good" gay scene is in DC, so I can't evaluate whether it's a 5 star experience based on that. To put it another way, would you take your steakhouse advice from someone who's only eaten out at Outback?) The staff is incredibly friendly (and a bit flirtatious with the regular customers, but not in an overly aggressive way), makes killer drinks, and you can't beat that happy hour special. To be fair...I DO like the renovations made to the space since it was Halo (and Mova--or whatever the hell it was called after Halo). The place feels a little richer, somewhat more grown up; maybe it's the caramel-colored leather booths and the dark mahogany-colored accoutrements or the replacement of the neon lighting for more sophisticated lighting fixtures. There's a little more room to move around, as well--the tables and ottomans that used to be so obtrusive have been removed (thank God). It's a cute spot. But the problem here was never the venue or the drinks (they've always had great drink specials) or even the location (even though finding parking can be a b*tch at times); it's the FEEL that keeps me and my friends away. Likewise, it was the FEEL of Halo that made me stop going there in the first place. It's a difficult task to create an atmosphere that appeals to both the black and white gay worlds (they are vastly different, ya know)...but most club/bar owners really don't try. It was a bit easier back in the day when hot music was the great equalizer, being fashionable garnered you throngs of fans and great DJs were like rock stars. You drank, you danced, you flirted, you got your life...you didn't really care if you did any or all four with someone of the same race or not. But in this era of iPod playlists blaring songs heard incessantly on the radio and grown men wearing baby Gap T-shirts, bars/clubs don't have that same allure anymore; and, unfortunately, this proves true for Number Nine as well. Don't get me wrong, if you liked Halo, Nine offers the same pale twinks and silver daddies, tight bodied gym rats in tight titty-tops and skinny jeans, snow-queens looking a mess but feeling quite the contrary, and drunk white girls who think they can grope you just because they're drunk white girls. But if you thought the place's transformation would include a total shift in paradigm...think again. read more

As far as gay bars go, this one is close to my top choice in DC. They have a great selection behind the bar and very friendly bartenders. Also, you cannot beat the fact that they have happy hour from 5PM-9PM every day where you buy one drink (anything in the bar, not just rail drinks and cheap beer) and get one free. On Friday, the happy hours is half price on every drink so it is same deal in a different disguise. I like the atmosphere here and the comfortable booths along the wall make for a nice place to have a couple drinks with friends after a long day at work. My one criticism would be the volume of the music. Number Nine has a great lounge feel and I really enjoy coming here to catch up with friends over some drinks, but the deafening pop music makes it feel like you are at a nightclub at 6:00 in the evening. If they turned down the music, this review might go up to 5 stars :). read more

From my straight-girl perspective, Number Nine delivered on decor and drinks plus a friendly staff. The upstairs bartender was a doll. A well-groomed, adorable man-doll. My crew rolled in on a Saturday night and while there was a DJ, no one was dancing. The only songs I remember hearing were something by Kelly Clarkson and that annoying ish by Swedish House Mafia, which I haven't been able to get out of my head since. I always enjoy my time at Nine. As a woman, I can sometimes feel out of place in gay bars but never here. I've had nothing but positive experiences and love the diverse group in race, age and status. I always feel welcome. also, it doesn't hurt that my favorite bartender looks like Adam Levine (yummy)! But I digress... The 2-1 happy hour is the best and I love being able to pace myself with the ticket system. Plus, I can get what I want, not some nondescript rail drink. One of the best happy hours - two for one cocktails and you don't have to order both at once (not that I don't mind double-fisting). Instead they give you a ticket and you can go up to the bar again when you're ready for number two. The drinks were good, and the place was really swanky looking but without making you feel out of place if you weren't dressed to the nines. Also a new experience being LITERALLY the only girl in the bar (this doesn't happen to me at Nelly's!) but by the end of happy hour the place was packed. Number Nine has great drinks and nice people! Being new to DC, I was happy to come across Number Nine. It's a great place to go for an excellently prepared cocktail and good conversation. They have a nightly happy hour (which I have yet to make it in time for) that runs from 5 - 9 (I think, though you should check their website). The happy hour offers 2 for 1 drinks. I have usually arrived at 9 or 10 ish --oops. In any case, I'm fine with not getting 2 for 1 since the one drink I usually get is prepared with care and attention to detail. Yes, I am picky about my drinks. The people at Number Nine are friendly, which makes this an easy place to get a drink whether I am out by myself or with friends. It's mostly men and the few women I have seen there are straight women hanging out with their gay friends. But, it's still a good atmosphere and the guys are not opposed to chatting it up with whoever. I have really been amazed at how smart, funny, and interesting the guys are here (not sure if this is how it is everywhere in DC or that Number Nine somehow attracts smart, funny, and interesting people). With a few friends in tow we stumbled on this place after happy hour around the corner. Didn't realize it was a gay bar until every single guy in the place was drop dead gorgeous. Anyway we scored a booth with a front row view of the presidential debate on TV (not your usual happy hour but hey it was fun). Drink specials were buy one get one free. Unisex bathroom was spotless (but they still leave the seat up). I loved the vibe and the 20-40s crowd here. The atmosphere is approachable, but at the same time classy and upscale. The decor is sleek and modern. What a delightful place in a prime locale. I sauntered up to the bar yesterday around 530p to meet a friend who was in town for meetings. The bar itself is very simple but tasteful, low light and plush seats with tables along the wall, all cool but I like sitting at the bar and thankfully there were some spots. John, my handsome bartender, was very friendly and even saved me from a rather sloppy patron who was using me for both physical and moral support. Thanks John! NN's happy hour is truly one of the best in the city with a two for one special that can't be beat. Order a drink, pay, they give you a ticket that you can redeem for a second drink. I'm sold. One of my favorite liqueurs is X-Rated, the grapefruit infused vodka, and barely anyone in DC has it behind the bar but NN does and I indulged! Needless to say, if you are a gay man in DC this is the local watering hole to visit. It was my first day in DC for a training and my hotel was in walking distance. On a Monday, I was surprised at how quickly the place filled up at 5pm. I was looking for a place to chill and the bartender made me feel right at home. I inquired about other gay spots, sushi and Mexican restaurants. He was knowledgeable and soooooo helpful! Great remodel of the Halo/Mova whatever it's called today. Much more seating, no more low couches at crotch level of the passers by..."not that there's anything wrong with that..." But eye level allows for more equal viewing of the crowd. Gone is the DJ booth, the white decor like something out of a Stanley Kubrick film...and alas, a few of the bartenders have been replaced with less talented, less personable ones. Drink quality is shakey... Shop your bartender carefully, and you should hit one that meets MOST of your needs. Came here with some friends for Happy Hour before dinner. Their two for one Tito's is a bargain! What's not to love about a bar that makes a stiff, tasty drink for less than $5?! The ambiance was nice and the bartenders were attentive. This place gets hoppin' later in the evening because we came the next night and it was jam packed! The music was fun and varied keeping the dance floor full and lively. Even considering how busy they were, the bartenders never left me waiting very long for another cocktail. I'm going to give Number Nine a preliminary two stars, and hope to change this to a four or even a five star review soon because I definitely feel like 9 can get there. My rating is based on quality of drinks. I went last night with 3 friends, one of which didn't have anything. Three of us ordered drinks off of the drink menu. My mint julep tasted like watered down minty sugar water, and I couldn't tell if a bottle of bourbon had come within 10 miles of the drink. My friend's raspberry mojito tasted great but again where's the rum? It was essentially raspberries and mint with soda water, I think. The other friend ordered the lavender lemondrop which was delightfully tasty. I ordered a simple mixed drink from a different bartender, which was just right. My mojito friend and I are not ones to think that drinks need to be really strong so that we can get our money's worth, because it can negatively impact the taste of the drink overall. But, what we were served amounted to what I think were virgin versions of the drinks. On ambiance and decor, very nice. Liked the music on both levels as well. I'll certainly be going back a number of times over the summer and excited for improvement. read more

BASICS: Visited: Monday, 12/30/14 and Saturday, 01/04/14 Drinks: Vodka Gimlet, Jalapeno Margarita, Old Timer Bill: 2 for 1 during happy hour so six drinks (Gimlets & Margaritas) costs $36 + $14 for the Old Timer REVIEW: Having previously visited Number 9 with friends for happy hour, I decided to take an out-of-town friend visiting during NYE week along with another friend to enjoy happy hour--we went twice during the week! The bar's modern style is in line with many of the boutique hotels/bars out there now. The crowd obviously is mostly male/Caucasian since this is a gay bar in the Logan Circle area however you'll see folks of all ethnic backgrounds and some gals from time to time. This is my favorite place to drink because HH last until 9pm and includes some well made simple cocktails on the 2 for 1 menu that I can drink all day long. I LOVE-LOVE the Vodka Gimlet they make and the Jalapeno Margarita is ridiculously good! Did I say already that I could sit and drink these two drinks all day! Another drink that's NOT on the 2 for 1 menu but well worth a taste -is the Old Timer. BOTTOM LINE: I like classic cocktails with a twist and I get irritated when bartenders go all "mixologist" and try to be too creative and end up making poor quality drinks. I sipped down the "Fruity Fisher" drink it's a great medley of vodka and an assortment of different fruits topped from the Local DC area. I had several and I don't think I can enjoy another DC night with out it. Came to Number Nine a few times during the weekday and it was pretty chill. Not too much of a crowd, but the decor was nice with a slight upscale vibe. There was also a good amount of people to talk to and meet. Two for One drink special is good of course and the prices are decent.
