I decided I needed to go out. Busy night with the high heel race I missed because I had my class and a seminar to attend. Around 10:30 maybe a bit later I arrived at Larry's took a seat at the bar. Never been here before! However, I witnessed an act of kindness from someone at this establishment this past weekend. While walking by and trying to figure out where my GPS was sending me, I overheard someone yell "Hey, you want some candy'. Being the foodie that I am, I looked up like "Heck yeah" only to discover that the question was actually directed towards the young national guards across the street. They responded "No" with a smile but that is because they aren't supposed to take gifts, per se. Well, the guy from Larry's walked across that street to hand the bucket of candy over to them anyways. Seeing their faces light up with joy while grabbing candy made me think of how they had probably missed trick or treating with their own family for Halloween. That sight of humility and community brought me to tears. I may be hetero but I will for sure come in to support just on that act alone. I heard happy hour is good here, too. I plan on finding out! I cannot believe Michael one of the bartenders fished my keys out of the sewer in over a foot of sludge and God knows what out front of Larrys! I attempted to recover them but ultimately gave up. Not Michael. He rolled his jeans up and climbed down the manhole and fished around in the mircky sludge until I heard this jingle, turned around and saw my nasty dirty keys on the sidewalk in front of the bar! Ron, Brett and Hawk did a great job with rearranging seating and catering. I have been searching for my dive bar in the area. Since moving to the area I haven't had much chance to go out and discover after hours. When I was living back where I moved from, I would be out multiple times a week to my favorite spot and just chill. This place hit a lot of those marks and reminded of that place. If you don't like steep steps use the entrance that is a gradual ramp to the door. Those steps at the other entrance were treacherous. Inside, like many have said, it is small. When the weather is nicer, I am sure that this is more spacious. But if you visit during the colder months, it's a bit off. Drinks were decently priced. Bartenders were accommodating to drink specification. Their margaritas are decent. The crowd can be entertaining and welcoming. This was my first time here and when I went up to the bar to grab another drink I was offered some pizza that one of the patrons had ordered. Of course I declined, but it was nice of him. Got to meet the owner of the place and some other characters during this visit. They had us laughing and involved in the place. Definitely a spot I would return to. read more

What's most fascinating about this wonderful neighborhood bar is that the number one priority is the absolute happiness of the bartenders. The service is just above abysmal when it's moderately busy. And, if you signal to them in any way that triggers their childhood horrors, then you need to sit down and and bow your head because your bill isn't coming until you have served your sentence. This is clearly not the whole staff, but those who fit this description know who they are, as does all the regulars at Larry's at the 30+ year institution. A nice, friendly bar During a 2-day trip to D.C., I decided to drop by Larry's Lounge during my first night in the city since it was a 10-minute walk from my hotel. At first, I felt a little intimidated because it seemed like EVERYONE knew each other. *I mean, that's what one would expect at a neighborhood bar.* Also, there was no was no space for me to sit at the bar. For me, it looks kind of sad if you are sitting at a table all alone in a bar setting. Anyway, I managed to find a place at the bar and chatted with an older gentleman (he could have been the manager or owner). He was very nice and introduced me to a couple of other folks at the bar. I pretty much was accepted into Larry's community. The bar is kind of no frills, which is what I wanted for that type of evening. It kind of gave me a late 80's/early 90s vibe. Also, the well drinks were around $5 and the bartender made them pretty potent. Honestly, I had a pretty positive experience at Larry's on a Thirsty Thursday evening. We have stopped by Larry's Lounge for a night cap or two a couple times and I'm always pleased by the experience. The staff are friendly and great, the patrons are lively and eclectic, and the prices are spot on. This isn't the nicest of bars, a gay dive bar for sure, but it offers a really accepting and comfortable atmosphere that anyone can appreciate. I came to Larry's tonight in a group of predominately folks of color, and we were immediately treated in a strangely antagonistic way by the white bartenders behind the bar. Both of the bartenders, white femme-presenting people, were clearly very drunk (both slurring their words, aggressive, and stumbling behind the bar). We truly came in to just have a casual drink after a long day of work and the bartenders (especially one, a blonde white woman) immediately behaved aggressively toward my friends, Black nonbinary and Latinx nonbinary friends, suggesting that they were drinking underage and threatening to call the police for entirely baseless "underaged" drinking (both of my friends are 25 years old with legal and scanned/verified government IDs). The behavior was completely confounding and out of nowhere--again, we had just arrived for a casual drink after a long day of work at what we thought would be a safe space as a gay bar (all members of our party are queer and gay). When I inquired as to the reasoning behind the bar staff's aggressive treatment of our group, the bartender was incredibly defensive and suggested that DC was "not racist," as compared to wherever we might be coming from (Los Angeles, lol). They refused to take any accountability for their unacceptable racist, unprofessional, inappropriate behavior and instead suggested that we were "assuming" that they were racist, which they couldn't be because they "have Black friends." The more drunk of the bartenders was dismissed by their coworker and went off to talk with their friends on the other side of the bar, pointing and looking at us. My friends--again, QTPOC folks--had felt immediately unsafe, freaked out, and scared at why the bartenders were behaving aggressively toward them. They wanted to leave immediately, were scared, and even when I (the only white member of the group) tried to intervene with the slightly more sober bartender, the bartenders were defensive and blamed us for their own aggression. I think it goes without saying that this is completely unacceptable behavior, ESPECIALLY at a supposedly queer-affirming establishment. It is laughable that the bartenders balked at the suggestion that race played a factor in what was a bar almost entirely populated that night (11/28) by white people. I hope management takes into serious consideration the gravity of this behavior and undertakes appropriate training to correct highly inappropriate behavior. read more

This was my first time at Larry's Lounge and it was amazing!! A group of us stopped in after dining across the street Sunday afternoon, we wanted to keep the party going for my friends mothers birthday! I cannot tell you how great this place is. The bartender Hawk was so nice and even when I misheard him and thought his name was Todd, he never once corrected me and was a good sport! Sorry Hawk, I will never make that mistake again..lol..Great drink specials and very reasonable pricing. The liquor selection is beyond decent. They have outside seating for when the weather decides to stay warm! One of the owners stopped by for a chat with us, he was so dang nice! Larry's is a riot. I have been going for a while, and always enjoy the low-key atmosphere. I recently found out that a new owner took over, and has been working to make some pretty big improvements. I had the opportunity to chat with him when I was there, and he outlined his plans for changing the basement up, and making it more attractive for groups to have get-togethers. Drinks are pretty cheap, especially if you compare to other neighborhood bars. The patio is one of the biggest draws for warm weather. It is a pet-friendly patio, so there are always lots of cute dogs hanging out with their owners. The basement has always been pretty musty smelling, but the owner tells me that he plans to work on that little by little, and I have seen baby steps towards that goal. Let's hope he works that out.
