Nugget market Gourmet to Go Fabulous!! I rarely order food trays because the quality is not up to my standards and I don't want to have to recycle those horrid plastic trays and lids. We ordered from Nugget's for a memorial gathering for 17 at our house. The food comes artfully displayed on wooden trays that can be used for other occasions or composted. We ordered 5 trays and deviled eggs. All EXCELLENT. Even the veggie tray was fresh with tasty organic veggies. Fed everyone and just the right amount of leftovers to send home and keep us for the next day. It was "expensive", but completely worth it. Generous amounts of high quality food. This is one of the options for grocery shopping in Davis. However, I think it should be an option for picking up a few drinks, sandwiches, and specific items. For groceries, it is good too just a little more pricey than some of the competitors in the area. When i get a coupon book from campus, or in the mail, I quickly sift through it for the buy one get one free sandwich at the nugget market. BOGO sandwich! i'm not sure if any place for sandwiches in Davis can beat the nugget. They have a huge variety in options for sandwiches and you can build your own with almost all the ingredients you can think of. Really good sandwiches at really good prices, it is it is somewhere around 7-9 bucks? and if you had a coupon, even better. In general, their salad bar, sandwich area, and deli are really on point. I come to the nugget market purely for these options. If i am looking for some cool brews or a specific drink, i can usually find it at the nugget market. This is probably the only other time i visit the store, and only if I am in the area. Otherwise, I can pick up drink elsewhere, or get brews over at UOB or the Beer Shoppe. Note: their fresh produce usually looks really good, and sometimes when there are deals it can be cheaper than the competitors. Keep an eye out in the local ads! read more

All and all a bit on the expensive side but their sandwiches are the best in town. My favorite is the BLTA, the bacon is stacked on both sides of the bread and just the right amount of tomato and lettuce and an ample amount of avocado. It's worth every bite. read more

If I had the money to shop here for my weekly groceries, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we're not all making that Chancellor money, so there's no way for that to happen. Still, this place has the things that other places might not have. They have a wide variety of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. They've got a huge selection of local and organic stuff. The best thing about this place, though, is their sandwiches. I'd pick a Nugget sandwich over most other sandwiches in this city. They're delicious, especially the bread. You can tell it's all fresh produce. My only complaint is that the seating to eat isn't all that great, as you're kind of just watching people check out. I also always feel sick after I go to their salad bar for pasta salad or whatever, so I stray away from that (but that may be me being sensitive). read more

I've been on a sandwich hype ever since I had Ike's and was determined to find a cheaper sandwich place. At this supermarket, there is a specialized deli where you can order pre-organized (?) sandwiches (starting at $6 ish) or build your own (starting at $5.99 - which apparently used to be $6.99). I decided to build my own sandwich with FOCCACIA bread (baked fresh from their bakery - omg it was so good!) with PEPPER CRACKED TURKEY (the slices were a bit thicker than other deli meats I've had in general), PEPPERJACK (didn't think it was melted enough to give that kinda BANG in my sandwich like it usually does), TOMATO, LETTUCE, GARLIC AIOLI (mMMmmmm - try this!) and an added AVOCADO baked & grilled (so the result was similar to a panini - and I LOVE PANINIS). hahha. The sandwich size was decently big, either that I wasn't hungry that day (but I had nothing prior to waking up). There's a vast selection of drinks - I had no idea what to try. I finally grabbed an Orange/Tangerine GUS (Grown Up Soda) to try for the first time, which tastes similar to Orangina without the pulp. This is a pretty decent deli/sandwich/supermarket - reminds me of Andronico's or Whole Foods (if you're from the city/bay area). read more

This store is desperately in need of a redesign. No matter what hour I go, it's always a nuisance entering and exiting the store due to all the tables holding bakery items. It shouldn't be this difficult to move around in your store, there is plenty of space, it's just put to poor use. read more

You can basically find anything you want here. They have a variety of grocery and wine, and the thing I like about Nugget is that they have a selection of domestic and international wine that you can't get from other grocery stories. It's pretty nice and neat, and they do have a great selection. But do expect to pay a little more compare to Safeway, although there are times when you can get cheaper grocery here in Nugget than Safeway. Nugget has a great selection of hot food, definitely beats Safeway. They have a self served salad bar, a bakery filled with yummy goodness, and an asian hot food selection. Their food always make me hungry. Nugget has a great selection of fresh seafood and meat on the other side of the market, you would definitely smell the freshness when you enter. I like Nugget and the cashiers are always joking with the customers and the atmosphere is great overall. read more

Nice place for shopping the quality stuff. Prices are high. A good variety of product.

Even though Nugget is expensive, this is probably my most favorite grocery store in Davis. The produce is unbelievably fresh and everything in the store is so organized. The place is absolutely huge! They have so much variety of different foods and items that you would typically expect in a grocery store but even more so in Nugget. The staff here are always so friendly, professional, and provide great customer service. They are really the best of the best. The people who work at this Nugget have been selected from other grocery stores to work at this particular location, because only the best of the best can work here. You can't apply to work at this store; you need to be selected and chosen! I love this Nugget so much. Whenever I come here, I'm always happy shopping and when leaving. read more

Great grocery store, from soup to nuts. Trust they will have high quality produce, wine, beer and the other good stuff. Not cheap, but their prices are in line with most grocers even despite the extra quality. read more

Can find almost anything u want here!! Love it so much! Also incredibly delicious smoothies and baked goods. Very friendly employees too.

This is a excellent nugget, however, they lack in customer service. I've visited this particular location a few times and it's always the same. Once I am ready for checkout and the cashier and bagger/helper are always talking instead of doing their job and ignore me completely. No eye contact and no greeting just ring up the items and hand me my change while they gossip with their co-workers is more important. You are there to work and get paid not to socialize, that's why you get breaks and lunches to gossip. Nugget managers need to step it up on the training because it's very unprofessional. read more

This is a review for an experience with the bakery. I find the store itself a little over-the-top, although I'd probably shop there more if not for the prices. Anyway, here's the bakery story: I was poking around one day and saw a couple of slices of Princess Cake in with their refrigerated pastries like napoleons and eclairs. (Quick note: if you don't know about Princess Cake, google it. Or look up the episode in Season 1 of the Great British Baking Show where they have to make one in competition. It's worth your time.) Long story long, when I was a child my dad and stepmom bought me a Princess Cake every birthday for years. They live in Southern California now and were going to be here to celebrate my 50th birthday and my daughter's 20th. So I asked if I could order one as a surprise for them. Boy, did Nugget come through!!They rushed the order (you're supposed to give them 48 hours notice, but I only gave 24) at no extra charge. Then the next day they called me twice when they were afraid the cake might be a little late. In fact, we got it well before we needed it. And it was AMAZING! The best Princess Cake I've ever seen or eaten. Just beautiful in every way. You know how sometimes when you try to recreate a memory from childhood and it turns out all wrong and disappointing? This was the opposite. My parents were touched and delighted and my kids got a taste of my childhood. Literally. read more

Great service every time. Love the gluten free food selection and cheese bar. The samples basket for cheese has many little gems

Affectionately deemed "The Nug," this beautiful-to-look-at upscale grocery store is a great place for breads, beer, produce, and sandwiches. Seriously, the sandwiches are beyond delicious. In my humble opinion, possibly the best in Davis. From what I hear their to-go "box your own" lunches like salads, pasta, and hot food are really good too, I have just never ventured past the sandwich counter. Other than that, this market is a little too pricey for me to be a regular customer (thus, the loss of a star). However, their selection of organic and family-owned products makes me come back every time. I also love their selection of beers, cheese, baked goods, and produce. read more

The Nugget is amazing! I love the pre-packaged foods and baked goods here. The fresh sandwiches and juice bar are very good too. The Nugget is pretty expensive and I can't always afford to shop here since I'm a broke college student..but I prefer to go here over Wholefoods when I want to splurge on groceries. When I go here I usually get: 1) Rosemary beef sandwich 2) Salmon ABLT sandwich 3) Red velvet cake slice/cupcake 4) Sushi from the sushi bar (spicy CA roll is the best) 5) Sea salt dark chocolate (the nugget branded one) I usually get vegetables/meat/pasta here too but those things aren't as exciting as their specialty foods. Everything here is fresh and of great quality. If I still lived near here, I'd definitely shop here more often. read more

TL;DR - Worst smoothie bar ever. Period. Avoid at all costs. And from the looks of the prices, the market is wayyyy more marked up than whole foods with the quality being similar to safeway. Having lived in LA, NYC, and SF, I've incorporated smoothie bars into my daily life. Taking into consideration the different price range smoothie places, Nugget Markets' smoothie bar is by far the WORST smoothie I've ever had. First of all, they have a build your own smoothie option... but there's only like 4 or 5 fresh fruit choices and like 10 juice (definitely not fresh pressed) choices with two veggie choices that you have to pay extra for. Uh what? At 6.50 for a large (that's with no alterations or additions) it's definitely not Jamba priced, but significantly worse than a sugar bomb (which was what it turned out to be). I normally drink green smoothies with very little vegetables and I tried to order one that would be kind of similar. I ended up getting the peach whatever and taking out the yogurt. I paid extra for the spinach and when I asked if I could get more spinach in it because I like a more veggie heavy smoothie, my barista looked at me like I was crazy and said no. It costs extra. Well... duh. That's why I'm already paying extra. I didn't argue and just proceeded to wait for the creation. The color of the smoothie was yellow. Knowing your basic color wheel, there is no situation where adding green to peach will get you yellow. There was no indication (taste or colorwise) other than the "+ spin" written on the cup. I shrugged and gave it a try. SUGAR BOMB. It tasted sweeter than any fruit smoothie from Jamba. Honestly, if I wanted diabetes, I would have just gotten chocolate milk or grabbed an orange juice from the fridge rather than pay 8 bucks for a total disappointment. Note to management, when you charge people to add veggies to a smoothie, please make sure that there is actually evidence of any vegetal presence IN the smoothie. Three spinach leaves does not a smoothie make. Ugh. AVOID. read more

Is it legal for you to not have your return policy printed on your receipts or shown on your "Return Policy" signs at your cash register? Just small informal hand written chalkboard signs?!? I'm surprised you can get away with this. I'm reporting you to the Better Business Bureau for them to investigate this practice. It seems pretty shady and not good business standards. You're a multi million dollar company and all you can come up with for a return policy notification is a chalkboard sign a toddler could have made?? Wow! Will not shop here or recommend. read more

One of the DIRTIEST and bad smelling moldy-like Bathroom I've ever tried to use away from home and I'm not young either!

This is such an underrated place in Davis! I never hear about any of my peers eating or shopping here. Maybe because it's really expensive but... Their berry acai bowl is DELICIOUS and my favorite thing there. Perfect consistency every time topped with fresh blueberries, strawberries, bananas, chocolate shavings, granola, and honey! This is definitely the best place to get Acai in the area (including Sac), and it's probably in my top 3 acai bowl places ever (the first two being in Hawaii). It's $9.95 which is pretty expensive for a little bowl but it's so worth it if you want a treat. I recently tried their sandwiches and I got the Mary's Fave (I think that's what its called?) which is carmalized onions, goat cheese, arugula, some kind of aioli, and I substituted the default meat lamb to rosemary flank (steak). UM YUM!!!!!! It was probably the fanciest sandwich I've ever eaten, but it's quite thin. Their other sandwich options look amazing, such as the salmon BLT with avocado, portebello mushroom... you really can't go wrong with any choice. The sandwiches are $8.99 which is pretty pricey due to how thin they are. Like I said previously, it's a treat. I was sick one day and I came in and got the Purifier juice. It is kale, ginger, lemon, pineapple and cucumber water. I sub the ginger for apple. So delicious and it cured my cold! Small is $5, and Medium is $5.80. I would have given this place five stars if it was more practical for college students on a low budget (aka me), but their food is top notch and definitely worth the splurge every once in awhile. read more

They would not sell pasta salad that was available but had been covered up by their deli department. This review is for the Etorre's cake I got from Nugget. I got a slice of the fruitbasket and this chocolate cake thing in a jar. Both were SOOOOO good. It's really nice that Nugget carries their cakes though, makes it super convenient for people living in Davis. read more

Very pleasant place to shop. High quality groceries and excellent sandwiches. Staff really seem to like working there.

Nugget has a really similar to vibe to whole foods- everything is a lot more expensive but the quality is a lot higher than normal grocery stores. All of the produce is always fresh and the products are top of the line. Definitely recommend if you want to get the best products possible! They have a really good to go food area that is really fresh. They also have a sandwich area where you can order and they will make it for you. The lamb sandwich they have is AMAZING and definitely is worth trying. It is probably one of the best sandwiches I have had. It's not a huge sandwich but is relatively well priced from what you would expect from here! The store is exceptionally clean and the staff is very friendly. If you need any utensils for your meal, feel free to ask the cashiers as they will usually have everything. There is an indoor seating area at the end of the cashiers and also there is a seating area outside. read more

When i'm in Davis, this is my nugget I frequent. The employees are always very helpful, theres a wide variety of Cheese's and beers as well as organize produce. I usually like to come here and buy my flowers for my home, but of course I have to endulge in some treats. Its not a whole foods, but its close. I actually like how all there products arent healthy choice, so if we decided to indulge in some unhealthy choices, we have that option all under one roof. The store is always organized and clean and parking sometimes is hard to come by ( close parking spaces ) but thats alright, they're doing me a favor making me walk ! read more

This Nugget is the best grocery store that we have in Davis, but there's room for improvement. The meat, especially the beef, is not very high quality. Whole cuts are on display with the ibp shrink wrap still on. This is mediocre mass market beef from feedlots, and you'd think that in a progressive and woke community like Davis, there would be a bit more consideration of meat sourcing and something like a cruelty score. My other big 'beef' with this grocery store is beer freshness. They have a big craft beer selection, but good luck finding anything with a date code within the past 6 weeks. Bought a 12 pack IPA sampler and every bottle tasted the same - sherry and cardboard-like oxidation flavors. I suspect that the beer is being stored warm before it's put into the display case because I've never had a fresh tasting bottle that came out of this store. read more

I purchased a beautiful looking pie from Nugget. I paid about $18. The crust was so tough we had to use a steak knife to cut it, and still it was difficult. I do expect an $18 pie to have a tender and flaky crust. In my opinion, Mrs. Smith's frozen pies are much, much better! read more

My favorite grocery store! Fresh food and great customer service! The employees at the juice bar are the sweetest.

It is on the pricey end, but I like some of their selections especially when I don't have time to cook. They don't always carry the food items I'm looking for which is annoying and means a trip to another grocery store. The staff is always nice and welcoming, and their cakes are awesome! read more

When I went to school I lived right off J street and nugget was just a stone throw away. It became a regular stop for me during my time at Davis. I do consider this place similar as a higher end specialty grocery store similair to a whole foods, but most importantly without the whole foods price. Being a college student, who liked to eat and cook, you were on a tighter budget, and while one of the main complaints that most of my friends had about Nugget was that they felt that they are much more expensive then a Safeway or Lucky's (Albertson's back then.) Then again they usually eat cereal or top ramen. I personally think that their produce quality and diversity is much better then those two stores combined and I actually felt that their prices were quite reasonable, some would even say competitive. The seafood is always fresh and the fish monger has all the tags with the freshness of the catch available if you inquire. The other thing I like about the fish monger is that in a effort to inform the customer of which fish are being over harvested in the wild, they tag them with colored tags to show the level of over-harvesting that is going on. The butchers behind the counter are really friendly and when I was making a pasta sauce and needed ground lamb, which they didn't have, he was more then happy to take a couple of his chops, de-bone them and had them put through a grinder at no extra cost. The bakery though I must say is the best part of this place, throughout the morning at 8:00 am, 10:00 am and 12:00 pm, they would be releasing different types of bread fresh and hot from the oven. My personal favorites were the baguette, ciabatta and brioche. The brioche makes fantastic french toast! *wink* They have a large selection of wines, champagnes and beer, and quite a few specialty varieties of beer, I would often go and try some of the different brews here... They do have a Chinese food take out station which is decent, the sushi is alright, not my favorite though and I honestly never had eaten at their burrito station. But of course, in this area of meals, the best stop is their sandwich/panini bar. There is always a line here, and the reason why, it is damn good. The prices have started to creep up as I left, but the number of breads, meats and cheese you could choose from left for almost limitless combinations. My personal favorite was a honey ham and brie cheese sandwich with sprouts, avocado and tomato on a ciabatta mayo/mustard and toasted. I filled up a number of those buy 10 sandwich get a free one cards during my stint at Davis... I came here primarily for all of my core ingredients when I cook where I needed things that were fresh and of high quality, and while I did miss out on those buy 1 get 1 free deals on my OJ or 2 dozen eggs, this spot became my one stop shopping and most importantly, it was super close to my home. The sandwiches, bakery and even the staff here were all amazing, I miss it now that I've moved back to the bay. Nugget I'm begging you please come to the bay area!!!! read more

I had the worst experience at this place today.TO ALL PAYING COSTUMERS: KEEP YOURS RECEIPTS!!! If you don't, prepare yourself for security to come out and accuse/embarrass you about stealing food from this place. Security came out to the food court where my friends and I were eating to accuse US ABOUT STEALING FOOD FROM this nugget , even though we were literally right outside eating at their tables. I'm not upset about the fact that security was doing its job. I'm upset because these guys didn't even asked us whether we have paid or not. They automatically assumed we stole food and approached to us with a very elitist/ arrogant attitude. One of the security guards wearing a badge on his neck literally said to me "do you have anything to say about this" clearly making the assumption that I have stolen a sandwich. "Do you really think we'd be eating right outside if we had stolen sandwiches?" I'm never buying food from this place and neither should you! read more

So fresh and so clean, CLEAN! I'm like a kid in a candy store every time I walk in here. I was introduced to Nugget my first year of college since my roommate grew up in Davis. I have never seen a nicer grocery store! It is definitely a different atmosphere as all the employees are very friendly and go out of their way to help you. I've never been asked, "Can I help you find anything?", so many times! Although produce is pricier than Safeway or Savemart, I go to Nugget for the experience and their "NIGHT ON THE TOWN" cake!! I am in LOVE with the 7 layer, chocolate gnache, fudge cake, and vanilla frosting beauty! Screw boys! This is my 7 seconds in heaven! read more

I would write a sonnet, but I'm no poet So this review will have to do. As far as Davis groceries go, The Nugget is the creme of the crop, the bee's knees, the cat's meow, the cat's pajamas I like my grocery store to have a variety of things like pretty pastries on display, wide selection of wine and spirits, and fresh fruits and veggies. I'd be lying if I said that was the only reason I go to The Nugget though. As far as people watching go, you can't get a yuppier crowd than in The Nugget. (Think Whole Foods consumer, but with much less pretentiousness, mixed in with friendly laid back vibe of typical Trader Joe's customer.) It's fun to watch what people buy when they can don't have to adhere to the typical college student's top ramen budget. I live vicariously through the yuppies in The Nugget. One day I too can buy the fancy artisanal cheeses paired with equally artisanal crusty bread, and organic free range chicken with some organic seasonal veggies as a side, paired with some refreshing organic fair-trade kombucha tea. One can only hope... Based on my limited experience getting their fruit, it's always been fresh. I can't vouch for their vegetable nor their meat and seafood offering seeing as to the fact that I don't cook except for an occasional quesadilla or grilled cheese. Growing up around wine country, I thoroughly appreciated their vast selection of wines and different spirits. Here I found wines I could only find back home. They also have a wide selection of specialty beers and ciders fit even for the pickiest cider connoisseur. If you're at a loss on what poison to pick for your special occasion, the staff is friendly and willing to recommend drinks based on your needs and preferences. Of course, it won't be a complete review if I failed to mention the sandwiches sent from Heaven. The first time I tried a Nugget sandwich, I damn near cried because of how delicious it was. I honestly felt like Smeagol when he first found his precious. They offer a handful of gourmet sandwiches which range from $8-$9 or you can choose to make your own creation for around $6. Although a bit on the pricey side for my mere college budget, I'd gladly pinch a few pennies just to splurge on a Nugget sandwich. Going with the whole Smeagol theme, "We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious." Yeah, it's that good. Be forewarned, there's usually a long line of people. Expect to wait 15-20 mins on a busy lunch hour. Be patient, it's well worth the wait my friend. For a sweet finish, I recommend any of the delectable desserts they offer. The Nugget offers a plethora of different desserts to satiate any sweet cravings. They get some of their pastries from Etore's located in Sacramento while some are baked on site. Either way, my sweet tooth is satisfied. Being a tiramisu fanatic, I can say that it's one of the better tiramisu I've had in the area. So there you have it, a written expression of my love for Nugget Market Covell. read more

Nugget is by far the thing I miss the most about college/living in Davis. The juice bar is amazing--especially the vanilla shakes. The bakery seriously can't be beat. The pizza bagels were the ONLY things that could get me up for my 7:30 am o-chem class (ask to have it toasted on the panini grill!) Nugget has an awesome section of pre-prepared "dinners to go" like spaghetti and meatballs, chicken breast with wild rice and asparagus, and ravioli, which was such a live saver for me while I was in school because I had neither the time nor the talent to make myself nutritious dinners (I burn water). On the same wall (a.k.a. "The Wall of Pure Amazingness"), they also have a huge selection of hummus, remoulades, salsas, etc, all made in the store. They also have a giant selection of gourmet cheeses, with a cheese expert on staff every day. And the wine, oh, the wine! There are what seems like aisles upon aisles of wine, with two full-time wine stewards on staff who are always extremely helpful. The chinese food is super tasty, and super fresh, since it's made right there in the kitchen by actual Chinese chefs. Same goes for the sushi, which is made fresh daily in-store. Now for the piece de resistance...the deli. The paninis are seriously better than sex. My favorite is the #1 which is made with salsa-marinated turkey, pepperjack cheese, cheddar cheese, guacamole aioli, and an Ortega chili on fresh foccacia bread. Having worked in the deli myself, I can attest that all the ingredients are fresh and from the best sources imaginable. Same goes for the meat counter, which has the biggest selection I have ever seen (ever heard of Thuringer? They have it. Prosciutto di Parma imported straight from Italy? It's here. Rosemary parmesan ham? You bet.) They also have a GIANT deli salad case with super-yummy salads all made by the cooks in the store (not ladled out of tubs). Aside from all of these fabulous sections (which only take up the first 1/3 or so of the store), they also have all of the typical grocery store staples for way cheaper than Lucky's or Safeway. No joke. All in all, it's an amazing store to explore and patronize. And even if you don't buy anything, check out the eye candy. The majority of the staff at Nugget is hot. I don't know how they do it, but there are always tons of sexy men and women working there. So whether it's a hot panini or a hot cashier, there is something for everyone at Nugget. Go there. Now. read more
