I have mixed feelings about this place because I genuinely want to love it.
I absolutely love Ukrainian food, and the first time I came here, the food was exceptionally good. My husband is Ukrainian, and he really enjoyed it too. It was literally their second day open, so we waited about two hours for our food and the service wasn't great, but I completely understood because they were brand new. I was willing to give them time to improve.
I've come back several times since then, including specifically for the matcha latte. Unfortunately, the matcha latte doesn't taste like matcha at all to me. It mostly tastes like milk and has very little flavor. It's not a huge deal, but it's something that could definitely be improved.
One weekday visit was actually a completely different experience. There was a Canadian girl and an American girl working as servers, and honestly, the service was 10/10. They were attentive, friendly, and everything went smoothly. So I know the restaurant is capable of providing great service.
My biggest issue has been the weekend service. On one visit, we ordered lazy varenyky, and unfortunately they were basically just balls of cheese, which wasn't a great experience. Then when we were ready to pay, it took around 10 minutes for anyone to even notice that we were trying to get someone's attention.
I say this respectfully, because I really want this place to succeed, but I think the owners could really step up when it comes to service. Interestingly, the weekday service I experienced with the Canadian and American servers was significantly better than some of my weekend experiences.
The prices are also on the higher side. A plate around $18 doesn't feel like enough food to actually make you full, so you may need to order two dishes. I don't mind paying more when the food and experience justify it, but the value needs to match the price. For comparison, Clear Sky right next door has sandwiches around $14 that are much more filling. Here, an $18 plate can feel more like an appetizer.
There was also one occasion when the milk orders were mixed up. I ordered whole milk, but was given almond milk, while my husband received the whole milk. It caused me to have an upset stomach, so I think the staff needs to be more careful with drink orders.
Overall, I've probably visited around 10 times. I would say one experience was amazing, one was okay, and unfortunately several others left me disappointed.
I really hope they improve the consistency of the service, reconsider the portion-to-price ratio, and work on the matcha latte, because I genuinely want to like this place. The food has the potential to be really good, and I would love to see this restaurant succeed. I'm leaving this review because I hope they take the feedback constructively and continue improving. read more
