There were several serious short comings with the work that they did for me. I had them do exterior paint on 2 houses, a rental and my residence.
On the rental, most everything went o.k., other than they got a lot of over spray on the foundation.
On my house there were several issues that were not resolved to my satisfaction.
Incomplete prep work of many parts of the house. The wood molding that the outdoor lights attach to was not prepped at all, and they just sprayed right over peeling paint. I went and sanded and fixed those myself, including repainting them (before they were done with the whole job.
There were several spots where something had been mounted to the house and nail holes were left unfilled and just painted over. I still need to go back and spackle caulk those holes and repaint.
There were a few other places where they didn't caulk like around one of the hose bibs.
The most aggravating thing was they got overspray on my recently stained deck. The other painter I got a bid from said he would charge $2900 for re-staining the deck( I did it myself). Michael (the owner and the one who did the overspray) tried to clean the overspray off, but it's paint, so he didn't get it all off. I have a big mahogany deck, 44' x 14', and they only tarped the half closest to the house. The overspray landed on the deck, and it rained that night. According to the painters, the rain re-activated the paint. My major problem with this, is this guy has been painting for 40 or 50 years, he darn well should know what is going to happen to the overspray when it gets wet, and he darn well should be aware of what the weather is going to do. For the overspray on my deck, he said he wouldn't charge me the $200 for painting my shed.
Which brings me to the next point of contention. My shed. It was always part of the discussion, was supposed to be included in the bid. It was in the other painters bid. But Michael came to me a few days into the job and said he checked his notes and didn't see anything there about the shed, but that he would do it at a discount of $200. I begrudgingly said o.k. to the $200 upcharge.
After the issue with the overspray on the deck, and things were winding down, it was now just Michael here painting the doors, I asked him about finishing the shed, they hadn't done any of the trim work yet on the shed, to which, his response was, the trim was for me to do.
As if that wasn't bad enough, when I did go to finish the shed, I discovered that they did a crappy job as it was on it. There was clearly only 1 coat of paint on it, not 2 like he swore was on the rest of the house. This was made obvious by a spot on the front of the shed where you could still see the original primer showing through, something you might miss in the first coat, but no way you would miss the same spot twice in a second coat. The spray job was all from the ground, as there are trim boards that if you get up on a ladder and look down, you can see the trim board has no paint on top of it and a little shadow of no paint where the angle cause it to miss. The back gable end of the shed's facia board wasn't even primed, though the front one was.
There was so much pre-work that I had to do myself because they said they wouldn't do it that I spent 2 weeks getting the house ready. This included me getting up on my 28' ladder and caulking all of the siding joints. If you aren't willing to do this level of work for yourself, you probably need to hire someone else.
When it came to the bids from the 2 painters, Nu-Image was 1 sheet and 7 lines describing what they were going to do, and no, it didn't specifically call out the shed, but then, it didn't specify the house either. The other companies bid estimate was 6 pages long and detailed every little bit of what they were going to do and how.
I personally would not use them again.
I will say, the house looks pretty good, but there were way too many things that weren't done well or right. There is no excuse for the overspray on the deck.
I find Michael dismissal of my issues as me just being a complainer laughable and just a way for him to try dodge the real issues that he and his crew caused.
He specifically told me they wouldn't caulk the siding butt joints.
The "$200 discount" was because he forgot that the shed was supposed to be included, and it wasn't a discount, it was $200 additional he wanted to charge me for doing the shed, which was always part of the bid.
Today I found yet another problem they caused, while power washing the eves they blew out one of the vent covers, and never said anything about it.
Now I have birds nesting in the attic.
Given Michael's reply below, I would never trust him to do another job for me.
As far as his 5 star google reviews go, I left the exact same review on google, but apparently it doesn't show up, I only see it if I login to Chrome/Google.
Which makes me highly suspect of any and all google reviews. read more
