Looove this place for kids and big kids at heart (me lol). I'm actually editing a video now to post on my YOUTUBE page. I've been to the drive thru and walk about portions several times. This place is amazing ESPECIALLY during COVID. If you need to get the kids out the house to do something fun and explorative, this is it. They are open year round. They have all types of animals, you wouldn't think to see in Northern Virginia. You can ride a camel for a small fee. Feed the baby goats and Waffles the giraffe. The walk about portion has a pavilion for birthday and private animal encounters. This is were you get to potential learn more about the lemurs and possibly pet them. I haven't done this part but I'm sure it's exciting. I've done almost everything there is to do at Roers and will definitely be back. read more

We took our daughter there for her birthday and the lady at the front desk was super nice and helpful and we had a lot of fun walking around inside and driving through the safari. The only negative was we booked a capybara experience and it's $100. per person and advertises that it lasts for 20 minutes. (20 minute encounter) The zookeeper was super friendly and told my girls a lot about capybaras. The big negative was it only lasted 13 minutes. I guess they must count the couple minutes it takes to walk from the building to where they are, but it's a lot of money and when they advertise 20 min encounter for $100. you expect to have 20 minutes with the animal. It was super disappointing because it was such an expensive experience. Maybe next time advertise actual animal encounter time is 15 minutes. It wasn't quite that but I guess if you count the walk down from check in and back the total time was 20 minutes. Anyways, everything else was great!! Got to ride a camel for the first time in my life!! We rode Eli the camel and my sons rode Sam. It was $8 per rider and only one ride around the arena. It's all about th e experience here. Another amazing highlight was feeding Melvin the giraffe. It's like going to Madagascar, Africa or Australia without having to fly. The lemurs, the warthogs, monkeys and the kangaroos, other exotic animal all were fun.. If i had $40 to get the lemur experience feeding them apples i would do it. They were so fun watching them jump from log to log. The farm experience has ponies, goats and the small reptile area has pythons and iguanas etc. If I was an animal this is not just a haven. It's heaven.. they get fed all day. Eat, sleep, and eat again. You have to be willing to pay to have fun and purchase the lettuce, carrots and the small bottle of milk. It $6 each. I spent a total of $36 to feed the animals. It isn't cheap but for the price of total enjoyment.. u have to be willing to cop out the cash. Unfortunately the birds were done eating and the budgie stick (bird seed stick) we tried feeding the birds totally got ignored. Good thing we didn't purchase any and we got a free stick as a yelp check in freebie. There are tons of goats, the walking isn't far and it's an easy stroll. My kids enjoyed the two and a half ours of the zoofari. Sadly for Labor day weekend the safari tour was sold out and I'm sure it was well worth it for those who got to take part in that experience. This is a place i'd come over and over again and get an attempt of feeding the animals as u drive through in your vehicle. Much different experience than my first time here. Now the place is under new management and known as "NoVa Wild." Woman working was very overwhelmed, but she said it was because they're not typically open on Mondays. The drive through loop was open and we were the first car. Animals came running down the hill towards us and were overall very gentle and friendly. We bought a $20 bucket of feed that easily lasted us 2 loops. The walking part of the zoo is very small and run down with a lot of construction going on. (2) axolotl in the gift shop, (2) sleeping kangaroos, (1) capybara, a few monkeys/lemurs, many pygmy goats, and wild geese is about all you'll see since they lost their giraffes a while back. The walk through aviary is hands down the highlight of the walking portion. Worth a visit if you're looking for an outdoor activity and don't live far. read more

Some of the animals in the driving tour were aggressive with putting their entire heads in the car window. Keep your window cracked if you're not into that. Not all animals in the walking portion can be fed. Look for signs that say "Don't feed me. I bite!" on all sides of the gates. We fed an animal that we shouldn't have because the sign was on the other side. If it starts raining, you can wait it out in the covered hallway with reptiles and insects. Shortcoming: We weren't sure what some of the animals were on the drive through. There should be signs or a radio station to tune to so we can know who we are feeding! read more

This Zoo give the practical experience, However they charge you for EVERYTHING! The prices seems astronomically outrageous, i.e the carrot and lettuce trays were five dollars while the smallest baby bottle specifically for goats were five dollars and thirty cent not to mention it's partically filled midway. I had no idea there was a drive by safari and zoo that's 15 mins away from me! Thanks to all the fellow yelpers, my toddler had 2 hours of fun, adding some excitement to our mundane pandemic "routine". It's not as vast as the Smithsonian zoo in DC. But it's a great place for toddlers and young kids to enjoy for a couple of hours. It's also a little pricey, I think. $20 for one adult and $6 for a cup of carrots is pricey. But to see the smiles and excitement on my daughter's face when she fed milk to the baby goats is priceless (corny I know). The safari was a little underwhelming. You can make two loops with your admissions ticket. We saw llamas, bison, and cows. My little one loved feeding the llamas. Even though the safari didn't have much, the llamas made the drive through worth it. The zoo had more to explore. You can get to the zoo through the gift shop, where you can purchase more food if you didn't originally. Like I said, food is pricey but my daughter loved feeding the animals. Inside the zoo, there were goats, pigs, a camel, porcupines, donkeys, sheep, a giraffe, chickens, peacocks, and parakeets. Check in with Yelp and you'll get free budgie sticks to feed the parakeets! Came by here a couple of months ago on a cold winter day and was pleasantly surprised at how much our toddler loved it. It's definitely not the National Zoo but we expected that by reading reviews of this place; it is expensive, but our daughter loved trying to feed the llamas, driving so close to animals and then the goats and small farm animals! We couldn't see the giraffe as it was too cold, and recently heard both were killed in a fire which is awful... but this place gives more tiger king vibes than a regular zoo. We went last year on Easter Day as a way to enjoy the holiday, instead of sitting around the house. This was a wonderful experience for our daughter who was 8 at the time! She is generally shy of the Easter bunny, but stood next to their Easter bunny for photos and participated in the Easter egg hunt (which was included in the cost). This zoo is not very big. There isn't a lot to see, but what they did have was adequate space to walk around and a lot of interaction between the children and the animals. Our daughter actually got to feed a giraffe! Never had that experience at another zoo. And the safari tour was super cool. She fed the llamas and realized how they only wanted the food and not to be pet, which was pretty funny. We got to go into an enclosed space with the birds and she managed to feed one bird seed from her hand. Then she got to walk around the bunny space and pet the bunnies. Her favorite was the baby goats though. A lot of interaction that you might not find elsewhere. They had a bouncy house and face painting on site, but an extremely limited gift/snack shop. Do not come hungry! Anyway, I thought it was a great value for all the hands on activity that does take place for the animals they do have. I recommend this for a family day. read more

A little expensive but a great experience for young kids. Took my almost two year old and was able to see probably 90% of the zoo and have a picnic lunch in 2.5 hours. I recommend getting there early, we got there 9:30 a.m. on a Monday and the animals were still quite active and there weren't too many other people competing to the feed the animals. We didn't buy any animal food (lettuce, carrots or milk). But there were plenty of other people feeding the animals around us so we still got to see the animals eat. It's great that you can get really close to the animals, and you feel good feeding the animals healthy vegetables rather than pellets. There were picnic benches scattered throughout the zoo as well as porta potties. The open-air bus ride was a little lame, the bus doesn't fit a lot of people (so get in line early!), and it stops about 3 times to see various animals. They do let you feed animals out of the bus. The budgie sticks are little expensive at $2 a pop but the birds will fly onto your hand if you have them. After growing up in Northern Virginia, this was my first time. Definitely something to do with kids. But because it's so expensive I probably won't go often. read more

I don't want to be a Karen but gee, they really know how to upsell people to get their money because everything is nonrefundable!! I saw a lot of negative reviews and was nervous when I had already purchased non-refundable tickets. But We were very happy with our experience! We were told by someone who had visited before that there was recently a change in management, and they seem to be doing a great job! Animals all seem to be in good condition, & caretakers and employees were all very kind and friendly! The Safari Experience (which is now on a tram) was really neat and a lot of fun! My boyfriend and I bought a Livingsocial deal and we had a fun time here. It's more like a petting zoo than something more similar to the DC zoo but we didn't mind so much. It was fun being able to interact with the animals up close! It's a fairly large plot of land and I'm not sure if they offered maps at the entrance but that would've been helpful. We made sure we walked around everywhere to be sure we saw everything the place had to offer. I especially liked the bird house. They sell feeding sticks at the entrance where the birds will land on your hand to eat (this took some getting used to with them flying around you haha). We both got free sticks with our Yelp check-ins! You can also pay ($5 each I believe) to feed the camels and giraffes during specific time slots as well. The "zoofari" bus ride was a little anti-climatic but still a good experience. I have not been to Roer's before but I do have reservations for 08/29/2020. I am super excited because I love animals but so far my experience has been a very frustrating with customer service alone. You can not get in touch with ANYONE at this park before hand. My confirmation email for my tickets provides and number and e-mail address for any inquiries or if rescheduling is needed. I have been calling and e-mailing for DAYS now because I need to change my reservation time from 2:30 to 4:30. I called directly after purchasing my tickets to insure that I will be able to change the time without inconvenience or before the 4:30 time slot has sold out. This is truly making me not want to go because if you can't at least get back in contact with a customer, I'm afraid for what my in person experience will be. Smh but then again, there are no refunds period. Sigh. I'm really hoping for someone to contact me to accommodate my request or even just for a response! This place is a lot of fun for city dwellers in DC, Maryland, and Virginians who want to give their children behind the scenes access to zoo, ranch and safari. I recommend the bird feeding sticks for visiting the aviary with lots of colorful tropical birds. I recommend a cup with carrots for feeding goats, horses, and cows. I think the lines for the safari bus are crazy long on the weekend. We waited over an hour for the bus and had to leave to get lunch. Thus we wished there were more buses. We LOVED the new Wild Wings house! Our only wish would be to make it easier to see the sloths. Came here today for the drive through safari. I have mixed feelings about this place. There are obviously things outside of the owners control, like when we went most of the animals appeared to be more interested in resting versus eating so we only got to feed a cow, a llama, two mini horses, and a donkey. I like that they allow you to do two laps in case another animal becomes interested in eating and to finish handing out any food you have left over. With that being said, the "drive-through" portion of the safari is a rather small loop, taking about 15-20 minutes at most to drive around going super slow and stopping to feed the few animals that wanted to eat. To me, the experience seemed pretty overpriced. I think the drive around loop should be priced per car versus per person and include at least one cup of carrots or lettuce per person. I'm glad I went to experience it, but for what it is, I probably would not go back. read more

It's been a hot minute since I've been here but with the recent fire it felt like it was time to write down some notes about this place. This place makes its profit bringing exotic animals that should be in a sanctuary into an environment that is not well-maintained or safe for them. There are plenty of small zoos that manage to be bastions for conservation, but a trip through this zoofari makes it clear that this is not one of them. The place looks like an abandoned circus-ground, where animals are kept with far insufficient space to move around. The supervision is minimal -- the level of staff required to ensure that the way the public interacts with the animals is absent and the care taken to protect the animals from abuse, litter, unsafe food, and general mistreatment is borderline negligent. During my visit I saw employees wander off leaving animals unattended with visitors just to go to the bathroom or take a break, making it clear that the place has been irresponsibly understaffed. With a shoestring operation like that, it's no wonder there wasn't an adequate fire suppression system in place to save those poor giraffes. Due to the lack of oversight, and speaking as a former teacher, I would NOT bring kids here, in small groups and much less in a field trip. I wouldn't consider the environment safe -- not safe for the children, and moreso not safe for the animals from the children, who haven't yet learned how to responsibly interact with wildlife and who aren't guaranteed to have someone there to show them how and ensure they follow through. The time I spent in this place made me cry. I'm not opposed to zoos, but I'm opposed to businesses that operate below the parameters required to do it responsibly, and this place is the poster child for that kind of irresponsible cost-cutting and using exotic animals outside their habitat as a cheap thrill. I would not recommend it to anyone. read more

We bought tickets from a Groupon deal, so by the time we went here we had already long-since forgotten the admission price. Which was good because there WERE a lot of add-ons. On the other hand, it was a lot of fun to buy a lot of carrots and lettuce to feed the animals. We took the bus, which was pretty fun even on a hot day. The alpacas were especially charming. The rest of the zoo was pretty great as well, especially for the kids! The petting areas were massive and lots of fun! We came here with two toddlers and two young teens, and there was enough to entertain them all. Yes, we splurged on the extras but it was nice to be able to participate fully. The budgies were fun as well (but watch out for the white and blue ones. Several of them were a bit bitey). All in all, a pretty full experience for kids of different age brackets. Roer's Zoofari was amazing, I had such a great experience during a party! So many animal attractions, interactive, great friendly staff. Damon was so funny and made our experience while we were on the tram ride! I would recommend this place for parties or just for visiting. I got some great pics of the animals. With the party, you are able to be at a private area, have baby animals stop by, get to go on the tram ride multiple times and get a free cup of carrots to feed the animals. They have a decent selection of animals. It's $15 per adult and $3.50 for a feeding cup. They also offer feeding buckets for $12 I believe. It's an extra $5 if you want to feed the giraffe or camel up close. A lot of people were feeding the animals. Not sure who is monitoring how much they eat and if it's good for their health. Everyone was feeding the same feed to every animal. I guess they all eat the same thing? It was a hot day at 88 degrees and some animals didn't have much shade. Some were trying to take cover under the tiny boxes built for them. The lemur island was odd, there were a handful of lemurs in a small island surrounded by water with no shade. The sheep looked like they had not been sheared in awhile since their coat was matted. One had what looked like dreadlocks hanging. The safari tour is done through school buses. read more

I realize it costs quite a bit to care for animals and there is also the cost of Northern VA land to consider, but for the price, I felt it was underwhelming. Perhaps I would have felt differently if the giraffes were still alive or the butterfly exhibit was open but either way I don't think we will likely to return. My biggest frustration was being told we could not enter the aviary because we used wheelchairs... very disappointing, particularly after purchasing the parakeet feed! The sign (once you enter the grounds and travel down to the aviary) simply states "strollers are not allowed" but there is a staff member at the door who told us we could not enter due to our disability. Their explanation was that we could injury the animals. I'm not an expert, but I would think an adult with a wheelchair would be less likely to injure animals than the crowds of young children packed in the same exhibit. Regardless, when you advertise "hand feed hundreds of parakeets" and then have disabled patrons show up at the door with tickets in hand just to encourage them to purchase more feed but yet know they will not be allowed to enter, it's really unethical. The appropriate way to handle this - presuming there is, actually, a legitimate concern for the welfare of birds due to a guest using a wheelchair - would be to simply state on the website (right where they say guests are welcome to bring wheelchairs) that some exhibits would not be open to wheelchair users - or - mentioned it when we purchased the feed. Another option might have been a small discount - similar to the senior admission fee - for guests with disabilities given that the entire facility is not open to those who use mobility devices. On another note, there are a lot benches and picnic tables - just an FYI for those reading this who are planning a visit. If I was doing it over again I would have packed a lunch for our group to enjoy inside. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. It was my first time there and I had bought the capybara encounter for 10AM. The instructions sent to me stated to show up 10 minutes before the scheduled encounter. I get there at 9:50AM and am greeted by a very condescending employee who tells me and the other person who was there that they weren't open yet. We told her that we were told to come 10 minutes before, but she just told us to wait outside. She could have told us this without the attitude, but maybe she's not a morning person? The capybara experience was great! We got to play with three young capybaras who were very friendly. I wish the staff member would tell us more facts about capybaras, but she was somewhat quiet. The property is fairly small, and there were flies everywhere. Most of the animals seemed happy, but the enclosures didn't seem very clean. The cheetah enclosure was way too small. I have mixed feelings about their camel riding experience. I was disappointed that this zoo would offer this, and the camels looked miserable. I'm told that this zoo is under new managment, so hopefully what I experienced today is just growing pains. I do think they should get rid of the camel rides and have a much larger enclosure for the cheetahs. read more
