The entrance is easy to miss on Robin Hood Road across from the Diamond (I've never seen the Boulevard entrance open as the gates are always closed). There are several recycling receptacles but they tend to fill up pretty quickly; however, I've always been able to squeeze in my weekly pile-up. This is a convenient self-service for apartment dwellers, especially since it's open seven days per week from 7am to dusk. They do close the gate after that time.

It's a recycling…read morecenter so it's dirty, it's loud, it's busy, it's confusing, they close early (3:45PM), they aren't open weekends, the location can be difficult to get into or out of (depending on traffic), etc... So why the five star rating? They pay good money for your scrap metal and it's relatively quick and easy. I've been here several times over the years. My wife saves all our aluminum cans (crushed and in large trash bags) and other metal scraps. On my most recent visit I had half a dozen or so large trash bags of crushed aluminum cans and some miscellaneous aluminum pieces that netted me about $30. On my previous trip I had cans and some old gutters which got me $44. Okay, you're not going to get rich on this but it makes a difference. The whole experience is pretty quick and painless as it usually takes me about an hour to load the truck, drive to recycling center, unload, get paid and return home. Not a bad payout for minimal effort. The yard is set back from S. Military Hwy. in Chesapeake just east of the Gilmerton Bridge. After you turn off S. Military into the business you will be mostly driving on dirt so don't head over there after a fresh wash job on your truck. Pull up on the scales and give the attendant your name then head into the yard. Make sure you are wearing a face mask or they won't let you in as they have COVID protocols in place. If you aren't familiar be sure to ask the attendant what to do. The attendant will ask you what type of scrap you have then direct you to the appropriate area where you will have to wait for another employee to assist you. It's all pretty quick and painless. You unload your scrap as directed, fear not as they will help you if you need or desire assistance. After you've unloaded just head to the inside scale area as directed where they will weigh your scrap then direct you into the office where you will show the attendant your ID then receive your cash. From there just get back into your vehicle and exit the yard. It's just that easy. All the employees I've dealt with on my visits have been pleasant and very helpful so you don't have to worry about not knowing what to do when you get there. I think it's great to have this facility available where we can get rid of some scrap and get a few dollars. Thank you Elizabeth River Recycling for making it so easy.

For local Newport News residence, there's no fee for driving off basic Trash And remodeling things…read morelike drywall wood maybe a shower enclosure. When you drive up, you have to wait for the greenlight, then pull up on the scale and talk into the speaker. They will ask you for your license plate number. You can give them the license plate number through the speaker. Like me, I had a rental so I had to get out and get the license plate number and go up to the window and give it to her along with my drivers license, showing that I was a Newport News resident. She said I was good to go and I needed to pull in and dump my things to the left. When you get here on Monday morning, expect a line. Even with a line it was pretty quick because most people that are dropping things off have other places to go to. Quick note for locals, there are these big green bags at Lowe's and other home improvement stores called Bagster. These big green bags hold a ton of things and fit perfectly in the back of a F150 truck bed. If you want to protect the bed of your truck a little bit while you're loading it up with stuff to take to the dump, this bag is definitely worth it. You can reuse it as well or you can have the city pick it up from your house for about 200 bucks. if you're doing major renovations, recommend getting an actual dumpster, but otherwise the green bag is perfect for some smaller home renovations.

We drove here to drop off some old furniture, etc. and we were warned that we might have a long wait because the Covid quarantine was inspiring everyone to Marie Kondo their homes and simplify and declutter! We were no exception! We rummaged through our house and got rid of a lots of unnecessary items. I won't "waste" your time with all the stuff we dumped... but we were pleased that when we got there, there was no line! Some of my friends told me they waited 1 1/2 hours! We drove right through! We weren't charged either so it was a flawless experience! Well, enough "trash" talk!
