Finding a coffee shop to work out of in this time of remote work is really challenging in many parts of Brooklyn. Most of the best places are too crowded to ever find a seat, and others are intentionally inhospitable to laptop parkers, for understandable reasons. Capitalism is a b*ch. I was hopeful when I saw photos of Nostrand Cafe's long bench that looked primed for coworking. Turns out said bench can get rather crowded, and you better hope your laptop battery holds up, because there are no outlets. I squeezed into a corner seat, but was happy to just hang out for an hour to work while I sipped on a matcha latte and ate my bibimbap. Which brings me to perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of this cafe. It's that they also serve Korean food. Find anything from kimchi fried rice to bibim gooksu and shin ramen on their menu. I also see now that they even sell soju, beer, and kombucha on tap, which I find a bit peculiar since they close by 5pm. I may add this to the coworking cafe rotation, but if anyone has cafe recommendations for a spot that's easy to work from and also serves savory food, I'm all ears. read more

I always judge a latte by how good it is straight off the menu and BABY, this was the first time in my life i've been this pleased. I got the iced honey latte and it's gonna be hard for me to come up off of her. I came in to work on a Monday afternoon and there was plenty of seating. It's a small shop, but still manages to feel open by utilizing the majority of the space with one large table in the center, and then more personal tables in an L - shape around the border. I ordered with no wait and my drink was ready in a flash. I did not try any food just yet, but I'm absolutely stoked that they serve Korean food. I'm always on the hunt for great cafes to work at, and I really enjoyed Nostrand. I had a chai and a cheddar chive biscuit and they were both great. There's also a fairly extensive food menu available. There is wifi available and plenty of seating, but did not see many outlets! Overall a great spot for breakfast or an afternoon coffee. read more

Absolutely darling place! Has seating by the windows as well as a large cute picnic type table in the center of the floor. (Heads up, right now they're allowing 1 hour indoor seating) I ordered a Bibimbap with Kimchi and it was delicious. It was the perfect portion size and everything came out hot and just right. The hot sauce on the side was the perfect compliment! I only gave four stars because the smoothie (blueberry and banana w oat milk) was a little odd tasting. I'm not sure if maybe because it wasn't very cold, or if it was the ingredients, but I didn't enjoy it very much. A solid 3.5 stars. Nostrand Cafe is footsteps away from where I grew up. Although I no longer live right around the corner it's still relatively easy for me to get to. The bulgogi bowl with beef, egg, avocado was tasty. The beef had a lot of flavor. The egg was cooked pretty hard. It would have been great to have a runny yolk which would have created a bit of a sauce and nicely coated the other ingredients. As it was, the dish as a whole was a bit dry. The tacos were fine but nothing I would I rush to order again. The space is very nice. There is a lot of natural light and I like the communal dining style with wood benches. I'm glad they're offering pick-up but I'm looking forward to when they open again. I would give Nostrand Cafe another shot because they were just shy of 4-stars for me. Next time I'll order breakfast because I hear their breakfast bowls are where it's at. read more

No outlets but delicious sandwiches! Sweet coffee cafe but with terrible parking, so good luck there. We came here to journal and do about an hour's worth of work in the morning. The cafe is small enough to wear there will most likely always be 1-2 people within view but large enough with enough seating to find privacy. I'd recommend but again, no outlets! read more

Generously portioned in this hipster meets retro meets smooth 21st century technology corner cafe spot- we just came in for a lemonade on a hot day but got so much more. It was mid-day and they were clearly renovating... replete with 4 muscle men "piping" their new roaster because clearly a 200lb 20Gallon roaster is for little league. Oh yes- aside from the housemade Korean standards with a twist... their thing is Coffee... really really special coffee where you can tell someone has an obsession when there are actual life-sized hour glass contraptions of cold-brew technology. That alone is worth a look to be honest. If not, they have artisanal beer and wine on tap as well. Decided to stop by after I saw their cool cold brew set up from the window. Inside was very clean and organized, oddly enough didn't get slammed with the smell of coffee when I walked in. Definitely an upscale third wave coffee spot that does a great job. Staff was nice and really just stopped by for some coffee. Food/Drink: 1. Cold brew - 5/5 - dangerously delicious. It had little to no acidity and very flavorful. Had a natural sweetness and could definitely justify the reasonable $5 cost for quality coffee/beans. 2. There was also an assortment of patties (croissants mainly) which I didn't try. Didn't see anything savory. Just moved down the street; contender for my go to coffee currently. read more

This place is so sweet. I first noticed the tin panelling on the ceiling adds a whole new dimension to the cafe. The darker walls and brick are brightened up by all the plants and light from the street in addition to pops of color and coffee bags. Love the ambience created and the design. Had the bulgogi burrito and was so impressed. Tender, sweet, savory beef with avocado and delicious kimchi. Sometimes you can tell a cafe does some grocery store kimchi but they seem to do their own kimchi in house and its delicious. Came here for the first time earlier this morning and was blown away by how great the food and coffee was! I work close by, and have been trying out different cafes in BedStuy and Bushwick. The cafe is a decent size. You walk in and there is a large communal table with bench seating, as well as countertop seating by the window, and small tables to the side. It is pretty spacious and can accommodate a good amount of people. The center table was nicely decorated with cute little plants, succulents, and cactus. The service here is great and the people who work here are super friendly. This is not your typical BedStuy hipster cafe - it has an interesting Korean flair to it! Their menu items include kimchi omelettes, and breakfast items where you can add bulgogi to it for an extra $4.50. Such an interesting concept! I ordered a small iced coffee ($2.50) which came in cute mason jar. I also ordered a breakfast platter: very large portion - two eggs, potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes, toast, and I added bulgogi ($13.50). The bulgogi was so delicious, and totally hit the spot. Everything else on the platter was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and went very well together. Highly recommend, and will definitely return! read more

This Korean-American inspired cafe is a nice and new addition to Bed-Stuy. They offer healthy, creative and signature dishes infused with bulgogi (as per your request for $4.50), a spacious dining area and cool staff to take care of you. I do appreciate the budget-friendly menu but I do warn things can add up. I ordered the breakfast platter (egg white request minus the mushrooms, $9) along with a side of avocado, $1.50 (the staff kinda forgot so I had to remind him) and decaf Americano coffee, $3.00 for about $14.40. Eh but it's expected. Staff was really cool. During our conversation, we laughed (sorry D&D) that Dunkin is facing stiff competition on Nostrand Ave. The battle between the chain eateries and hipster cafes is real. Especially since our palates have been exposed to so many different food dishes and people are also health-conscious. Oh well. The breakfast platter tasted awesome. Since I negated the mushrooms and they forgot the avocado (but brought it later after a reminder), my platter looked a bit anorexic. I was still hungry so I wouldn't recommend this dish if you are starving. Nevertheless, it tasted good. I would definitely come back to try an bulgogi-inspired dish. Modern, clean, open space with a very warm and welcoming feel. Staff is friendly, and the menu is very simple (big props). The foods are condensed to breakfast & brunch and lunch & dinner - it makes it easy for the customer to narrow down the options. Great view from the cafe and the place is well cleaned and taken care of. Here is some of my 2 cents that could help the place out in the future. The menu doesn't list ingredients. For someone who cares about what goes inside of their meal (this guy), knowing the ingredients is very important if I am not going to pig out on tripple cheeseburger with extra bacon, double fries and 7 beers. Ordered a veggie omelette, the waiter didn't mention some of the ingredients that came with my omelette that I don't usually eat. Eapressos were a bit on the sour side. Additionally, the omelettes didn't have taste. I get not overusing salt & pepper but the ones we had were both fairly bland. List of ingredients, spicing things up a bit, and the wrong ingredients disclosed with the order are my reasons for 3 stars. This used to be one of my favorite cafes given that their kimchi fried rice is amazing. However, today I finally experienced the level of oddly weighted "attention" the staff was giving me. Normally when I've come here I immediately get something to drink and eat. This time I wanted to get straight into work and walked in without ordering. I was there less then 47 minutes (yes, I had to check) because as soon as a booth opened up I sat there. The main cashier came running towards me and asked me, loudly, "are you going to order anything?" My response was "huh?" as he asked again. I was confused because he hadn't asked anyone else in the cafe, but me. It didn't make me feel good and what's worse is that I really wanted to order my fried rice and juice, but I just can't give my money to an establishment that tries to shake you down for money (especially if you were going to give it to them anyway lol). After this I doubt I will visit Nostrand anymore, and anyone reading this shouldn't either. read more

Very unexpected restaurant / cafe/ bar. Stumbled upon this place when we were walking around. From the outside and inside it looked like a very hip coffee shop. But when you look at their menu they serve really cool fusion Korean food and classic Korean food like bibimbap. I got the ice mocha and it was excellent! My friend got the Wakie breakie which is a espresso blended smoothie and it was phenomenal as well. I ordered the Korean burrito with beef and it was very authentic and a really cool combination. My friend ordered the tacos with had kimchi rice avocado and beef in it and she loved it as well. We will definitely be coming back! The service was great! The cashiers/waitresses were warm and welcoming, and the ambience is great for meetups and work. What prompted the two stars, however, was the food and coffee. My partner and I ordered the kimchi omelette and breakfast wrap. While they were not bad tasting, I would have expected a lot more from an eating establishment with presumably professional cooks. The level of cooking was something that I'd expect from a home cook -- why come all the way out here to pay $14 for a meal that I could have made this at home for less than half that price? The specifics: -The gochujang (Korean chili paste) was greatly watered down and runny, which is not something you'd expect of Asian restaurants. In real Korean eateries, the sauce is more viscous, almost to the point of tomato paste. -The kimchi omelette could do with more kimchi. It lacks the acidity and almost pungent, fermented element, rendering the kimchi omelette not much different from the ordinary American omelette. -As a former barista, I realized that my mocha, and all other hot espresso beverages that I observed around this eatery, were steamed terribly. Steamed milk should not have uneven bubbles on the top -- steamed milk should have microfoam (not bubbles) that is more homogeneous. The mocha itself has an artificial hazelnut flavor, and it just covers what lackluster espresso flavor there is. read more

Nice and clean spot for a quick lunch or to hang out for a bit while on your laptop. Between my friend and me, I got to try the beef bulgogi bibimbop and the pork burrito. The bibimbop, at $15, was more like a generic rice bowl with a Korean twist. Authentic bibimbops come with blanched and seasoned vegetables, but Nostrand Cafe's comes with raw spinach, carrots, and avocado, among others. The flavor of the beef bulgogi was nice though, as was the bibimbop sauce, which was balanced between the gochujang (red pepper paste) and vinegar, which I like. The $9 burrito had avocado, kimchi, pork, and lots of rice. It would have been nice if the fillings could have been spread out a bit more so I could have had a bite of avo and kimchi with each bite of pork and rice. The kimchi though was spot on, and this is coming from a Korean, mind you. Overall, I liked the food at Nostrand Cafe and would eat here again. The burrito was not the most attractive of foods, but it was satisfying and gave me the itis to the point that I napped for two hours after. Service was nice, too. The staff is courteous and efficient, and the environment is well-maintained, but that's as far as the pro's go for me-- my iced honey latte was decent, but my partner's mocha was pretty atrocious (artificial, too sweet). The food could've been okay, if it weren't for the glaring fact that it's really just Korean food that's been whitewashed to satisfy the palettes of White Americans. Even the gochujang I asked to have on the side was watered down! I can understand why the owner would do this to his menu to not scare away his main customer base (young, mostly white Brooklynites), but as a Korean-American, I was expecting more from my dishes than what I got (breakfast wrap with bulgogi + kimchi omelette with bulgogi). Again, I enjoyed the food (not really the mocha, though) when I removed culture from the equation. I just can't call this true Korean food in any sense of the word. I think it's frustrating that I wasted money on a coffee that I couldn't drink and didn't get a response or anything from the square message I sent. Food was good, but service is lacking. read more
