This review is only for the weight room. My only complaint is that there is only 1 squat rack. I understand this is a YMCA, and weightlifters aren't the main group that is being catered to, but 1 squat rack is laughable at any gym. However, there was new equipment that was added, notably the Rogue 2.0 Barbells, so that was nice. read more

Came here for ujam class today. Called ahead of time to confirm. After waiting for 10 minutes in a full exercise room, we are told class is canceled because instructor broke his ankle. Other people in the class said the instructor told them last week that he was going to be gone and would find a sub. Complete lack of organization and lying to members makes me give this Y a one star review. Even if there were no ujam instructor subs available, get someone else who does a dance class so at least we get SOMETHING. Terrible waste of time. read more

As a cancer survivor, I enrolled in the "Living Strong Living well" a 12 week Stanford program at the Y. With the help of personal trainers I started my journey back to health again. I was very impressed both with the trainers who put in a lot of effort and knowledge to help us move forward as well as the machines we were using for our workouts. Our 7 year old daughter attends 2nd grade at Stevens Creek elementary. Over the summer we decided to enroll in YMCA Quest camp. Her days were filled with super fun themes, various activities & field trips. We decided to continue with YMCA after school care. This is on campus and provides great coverage for working parents. Its an easy transition after seeing so many familiar faces . Because it is on campus we don't need to coordinate any additional transportation, great! All staff are welcoming & engaging, with consistent communication about important happenings & ongoing activities at camp and after school care. Well thought out projects, activities, and the kids are always having a great time when we pick up. read more

I've been going to this Y since August of 2010. I really enjoy the location and convenience. The staff is really friendly. I volunteered for the Annual Giving Campaign this year to raise money for lower income families in their subsidized programs. It's great to see how much the Y Organization cares about it's members, and members of the community. I love the machines, and the option to watch your own TV while working out. It makes the workout go by quicker if you need it. I usually go first thing when they open, and there's usually not many people in there. If you go between 6-7pm, it's pretty packed. I once had a member erase my name from the cardio board as I was putting my jacket in a cubbie. So rude! Not the Y's fault though. I like the extensive options for weight lifting machines, and areas. I love the stretch room. I don't like that there's not a place to leave your towels (in the stretch room) since that's the last area most people hit. They also don't have a clock or a drinking fountain near there, which is a little inconvenient. I love to swim, but I'm not a huge fan of indoor pools (read: I hate them) so I haven't even stepped foot in there. Other than that, I really enjoy this place. read more

I love you northwest YMCA. you are the best gym ever. Since I moved to sac I have missed you so. The gyms in sacramento suck. Even 24 hour because who cares if its open 24 hours if im not going to go between 10pm and 4am? I know you are a smaller facility, but with all the new renovations i still love you. I feel like i can actually get a good workout here without feeling like i am at a meat market. I love the fitlinx program because you remember all my weights and settings on the weight machines and tell me when im doing a good job or when im just being a lazy slacker. Yes, there are a lot of families running around and changing in the locker room can sometimes suck because there's no space or too many little kids and not enough showers.. but in the end, i cant wait to move back here so we can pick up our relationship again. read more

YMCA, is just Ok for simple workouts and some group exercises. Swimming pools are always occupied by swim lessons, we hardly get a chance to use swimming pool. Definitely membership is expensive for single person and average for family. Not worthy for the price. read more

The front desk staff are always welcoming as I enter the facility. I have so many aquatic exercise classes to choose from that I can do one any day except Sunday. I can even get a free clean towel. There is a variety of teachers and styles so I can find ones I love. After class some of us often stop by the cafe area for coffee and tea provided for free by the YMCA and relax a bit and rehydrate before leaving. The YMCA hosts a lovely pot-luck lunch for our class once a month where we can get to know each other better. read more

I love the Y. The group exercise classes are THE BEST. Mondays, Thursdays, and Sat Mornings is ZUMBA with Lisa. This class is so much fun! I love Zumba! haha Cardio Groove with Rob is also fun (although I haven't gone in a while because of time conflict with Zumba)! And the hip hop class with Kerry and belly dancing too! I The teachers are seriously very nice and energetic and they make the class SO FUN. Time flies by so quick and by the time class is over, you're all sweaty and gross but you feel good because you had fun and you had burned tons of calories. They're always updating and remodeling to make the place up to date with the newest machines, etc. The only thing they need is more parking space. read more

I have been with YMCA for 7-8 years. There are a big selections schedule of classes for all level. There is a very comforting community feeling with staff and instructors. Seema B. is making her classes very welcoming by knowing the active members. She goes extra steps to expand the community outreach by organizing Halloween, Diwali, and birthday parties for active members. read more

We joined the YMCA so our oldest could learn how to swim. We waited until he was five since we thought that was a good age for him to be really aware of pool safety, especially since they weren't allowing parents in the pool area. (They've since changed that rule; parents can now be near the pool when kids are taking lessons.) Turns out five worked well - it was only a few months before he was swimming on his own. Love the fact that the water's only 2 feet high in parts of the pool. The swim instructors we've met have all been really good with kids. The only thing we wish is that the classes were a little longer or there were slightly smaller class sizes so there could be more one-on-one time. I have also found Joe and Rob's step aerobics classes to be really awesome ones. Multi-step is more complicated than regular step. It takes a little while to learn, but Joe's really nice about showing the steps after class. And once you know the combinations, it's a lot of fun. I have no doubt the other step instructors here are great, too. The Y is one of the few gyms that still offers a lot of step classes. Please, keep it up! read more

I am a YMCA member that used to swim at the Central Location in the Alameda area of San Jose. During the annual closure, I went to the Cupertino YMCA because that was the next closest to my house. I fell in love with the Aquatics area! The pool is a nice temperature, not too cold not too warm. The lifeguards are very friendly as well. I had several questions about rules and about lap swim etiquette and they were happy to help. I really appreciate them for helping me and now I made Northwest YMCA my daily workout visit. Most gyms are the same. There's the workout equipment, shower, and various rooms. But no other place gives the environment that this Y provides. From the free towels, coffee or tea, sit back watch some tv and you could even check your blood pressure! Tasking into account they have some vibrant and helpful staff this is definitely one if my favorite gyms. read more

Although a lot of people think Y's are cheap, they're not. It's definitely up there with any gym in the area as far as price goes. As for the machines, they are new and kept in good shape. Almost every cardio machine has it's own tv monitor (bring your headphones) and all the weight machines are connected to FitLinx. I usually work out before rush hour, so I have no idea how crowded it is after 5pm. Weekends are rarely packed. The pool seems to be very crowded, but I don't use it. I used to belong to the super pricey Club Sport, but the YMCA is not only half the price, but a better fit for what I want to do. Their Fitlinx system is perfect for keeping me motivated and working harder on the machines. I'm a sucker for accountability and records (that I don't have to keep myself!). The staff is friendly, but when it comes to the free trainer appointments it can be give and take on the level of service. On the other hand it's included with your membership, so overall I'm happy. The bathrooms in the locker room are not wonderful, but the facility is kept clean and has a ton of workout options. read more

This YMCA is awesome. There are many programs / classes for all! Theres always nice and knowledgeable staff around to help you with the machines and weights. I've been to many gyms and the machines here are by far bar none (i.e. option to pick tv channel). The teachers for the children's side are friendly and mature. I would definitely recommend this place to families. Child care is available for younger ones - 2 hours max. Con: 1)They could work on upgrading the lobby area. Furniture is pretty lame. 2) The smell of chlorine is crazy in the pool area. Im surprised no one has passed out yet. 3) Machines are set in increments of 30 minutes. So once you hit the 30m mark, you have to stop, reset and start over. (Which can be frustrating if you run for a longer time.) All and all- nice. read more

I have been thinking a long time to try out a yoga class at the Y. I finally did today and I really enjoyed the class. The room was big and bright , you could choose to stand in front of the mirrors or not. I am glad it is a spot for the people who don't enjoy to stand in front of the mirrors. I have been to other yoga classes at yoga studios. They can be very cramped . So I am very happy that Y, have such a big room with a lot of space to do poses. I am looking forward to more classes at the Y now! read more

My son attends an after school program on campus run by the Northwest YMCA and he loves it. The staff are friendly and besides helping with his homework (already worth the price!) they have fun engaging activities. I picked him up early one day this week and he scolded me for not giving him enough time to play. They have different plans to accommodate multiple schedules and have been flexible and easy to work with. read more

I wish I have read the reviews about the kids swim lessons below before ... My daughter (3 year old) had her first swim class at the Y on Tuesday. I left the pool for 15 min (as allowed by the Y - I just went to the restrooms and quickly visited the premises and the workout room - my daughter is always a better student if I am not there) and when I came to pick her up, I saw she was under the water trying to float back. I immediately realized that something very bad was happening (because she is 3 and since she cannot swim, she should not be under water). I jumped into the pool to rescue her because nobody tried to help her! The lifeguard stayed on his chair, he did not even check if my daughter was ok and was able to breathe after the event. The swimming instructor was turning his back to my daugher when she sinked under the water!!! Moreover, nobody is able to tell me how long she stayed unsupervised and was under the water. The team on site treated us like we were nothing. First they told me I should have stayed in the pool (this is not an excuse because I am the one who rescued her and she was in a swimming class with professionals!). After, they did not call an ambulance, my daughter was shocked, I was shocked and soaked but the manager just said she was sorry and I have to bring my kid to the emergency room. The lifeguard and the swimming instructor have not even apologized. Fortunately, my daughter is ok (she shocked but she is fine), she went to the emergency room, the doctor said she was ok but I had to monitor her the next 24h to avoid a dry drowning. We are very lucky because my daughter had the reflex to stop breathing when she sinked but some kids may not have the reflex and a three year-old can drown with a small amount of water. I am in Moms Group and I found out (too late) that I am not the first one complaining about the YMCA Cupertino Swimming Lessons. The YMCA did not even offer to reimburse the emergency room expenses. I am more than disappointed, this is unacceptable, this is clearly a case of serious negligence and they clearly breached their duty of care. I will bring back my daughter to the pool because being traumatized with the pool at this age can last for her entire life. I just want to show her that everything is ok and she can still play in the water. I will be there with her because I will never trust again the Y's instructors. read more

This one star is for one unprofessional group exercise instructor. It does not reflect the entire Northwest YMCA experience. In fact, there are some terrific instructors and staff members. Ruby C. who teaches Vivasia is extremely rude toward her students when approached. I asked her about a song on her playlist and she accused me of trying to steal her material. She even cussed me out in Chinese language!! I have reported her to management. Please be careful when attending her class. She appears to be quite an unstable person. Don't become a member! One of the worst gyms I've been to. Starting with the front desk guy -- who will never smile to you, but would make a comment, if you won't smile at him... Because they are trying to bring as many customers as possible, the overcrowded mornings are terrible. If you do get a machine, after a wait, you only have it for 30 minutes. Thank you... The weakest point: the equipment! If you do get lucky and find an available machine, something will be wrong with it. Trust me: the sound system , the TV, or the machine itself. Also , it will take them about 10 days to fix it. Continue to the population which is mostly very old. Which I don't mind, (I'm almost there myself) but it affects the atmosphere of the place and the way they run it (the focus of the place, the music/luck of it etc'...) The operation hours of the pool are not family friendly, even in the weekends. Good luck with finding a good time to bring your kids for swim. (when I signed up - I thought I can do that often- -which I couldn't) Overall, the facility is very old, and it's maintenance level is very bad (locker rooms, equipment, etc'...) Last but not least, the smell! It's always stinks there. No one ever thinks to open a window once in a while. The only good thing at the YMCA is their child care, which is included in the membership. So if u are at home with a baby, it's cheaper than other gyms. That was the reason I joined the gym. Now, since I don't need this service anymore -- any other gym will be better for me. read more

I've been a Y member for many years and Northwest is by far my favorite facility to work out at and get my laps in! The pool is kept so clean and the pool staff are always so friendly! They are so attentive and approachable. The lanes can get kinda crowded in the evenings, but in the early afternoon it is pretty quiet. read more

I did a trial membership at this Y. The reasons I did not join included: - inexperienced staff who gave incorrect and inconsistent information and who had no knowledge of some gym amenities - insufficient parking - inadequate childcare (small room, staff was not able to comfort daughter, many babies in containment devices) - lots of money for a fairly dark gym - pretty awful class (gym ventures)--this is a 'new' class but I don't see it taking off. There were numerous objects used during the class (ducks, balls, etc). But each was only taken out for a couple of minutes. At one point, balls were taken out for two minutes and then put away...only to be taken out again. Very disorganized. The instructor seemed to have minimal understanding of childhood development and what was appropriate for children at this level The one thing I really liked about this gym was the variety of ages and body types represented. read more

The staff in the childcare YMCA are amazing!! Binoo, Emily, Cheryl, Sok, and Sunjida are an awesome team! I tried to take my child to a few childcare gyms before I found the Y. I started bringing my daughter when she was 10 months, now I bring my son & daughter who is 3 years. They're consistent, friendly, always take the kids happy or sad. This is mainly for their pool. It is the cleanest indoor gym pool I have ever been in. Its cleanliness makes 24 hour fitness pools look like the redheaded stepchild of cleanliness. Towel service w/ membership, free of charge-RIGHT ON. Friendliest gym staff I've ever interacted with. Transparent cost contracts The only negative, and I can't fault the staff or management for this, is that I have seen a couple members or visitors who seem to think it is appropriate to spit in the pool drainage gutter system. I have been coming to the Northwest YMCA because the Southwest YMCA is under renovation. This facility is actually quite decent with a large cardio room with enough equipment for about 30-40 people to work out simultaneously. There is a small weight room right next to the cardio area. The weight room is definitely smaller than the Southwest YMCA, but it is still sufficient. Across from the cardio room, there is a big open space for yoga, pilates etc. The only thing missing at this facility is the swimming pool. For those traveling from West San Jose or Saratoga, this YMCA is reachable through the busy I-88N/S, which can get a bit clogged from 6-8 PM. That is the only main inconvenience. Other than that, with your YMCA card, you can now access YMCA nationwide! read more

We have been coming to this YMCA for a year and it's been such a great addition to our day. While I am able to exercise, my kids are loved by the child care workers in the kids club. My 3.5 year old and 4 month old are in separate rooms and I can honestly say they are cared for well. Emily, Sunjida, Sok, Cheryl, Binoo, and Anna love my kids so well. I am a helicopter mom but feel strongly that my kids are not only safe, but extremely happy here. The "teachers" here are truly the best. My 3.5 and 6 year old kids are also in weekly swim class at this location and the teachers are amazing. In a couple months, they have improved so much and my 6 year old who was terrified of putting her face in the water at the beginning began swimming on her own last week! The exercise facility has worked well for me- sometimes there is a small wait to use whatever equipment I need next but generally members are very nice. I also want to note that members organize special celebrations (with food!) for occasional holidays (Lunar New Year, Diwali...) it's really a sweet community here. read more

I sent my daughter to Basket Ball classes for 2 sessions. The coaches were high school kids with no maturity. They don't give any personal feedback. They teach some strategies and make the kids act those plays. Instead of coaching they get so involved in the practice and they too play competing with the kids. Boys and girls are mixed in the team and usually there are more boys than girls. Boys rarely pass ball to girls even when they are clear to receive. Coaches do not provide feedback to kids to pass fairly or anything, they just watch. There is a staff supervising the practice even she doesn't seem to care and mostly spends time with her cell phone. I had to call out about these issues. That group is for 11 - 13 years or so. Even for this age group, instead of giving equal opportunities to all the kids they try to cast the player to a particular position based on the height. They don't rotate the positions. They make taller people to stand near the post and only few people gets chance to shoot, what ever their success rate is. During inter-team practice games the coaches gets so high as if they are playing some high stakes game. The staff supervisor did say she will talk to the coaches about these and hope they will address these. read more

The kids club at Northwest Y is fantastic. My kids love going there and the childcare staff are so attentive, warm and welcoming. I also like that the kids' rooms have plenty of windows and natural light. I always feel confident that my kids are well looked after and I can go exercise without any worry.
