I never thought I could get soooo excited about insulation....but I am!!! Northwest Weatherization came out last week and added blow-in insulation in my attic. They were easy to communicate with, fast and handled all the rebate paperwork so I didn't have to. Our 2000sf house was built in the the 50's-prior blown in insulation was between 4-7" depending on where you measured in attic. I'm the Summers, our house was an oven, Winters an icebox. No central heating: just cadet wall heaters (all new). Although we try to be as conservative as possible with heating, our electric bill jumps to about $400/month when it gets cold. (We even have new windows/doors.) The insulation was blown in on the 10th, day or so after was that first really cold day:outside thermometer said 36*F when I woke up. Went to the living room/kitchen, no heat on all night. Absolute noticeable difference: it wasn't toasty, but usually if is 36 outside, with no heat on inside, the interior temp might be 45 on a good day. Already, the interior temperature is remaining much more consistent and we are running the heat way less. We had to have a few extras done, to meet codes, but even with that, after rebates our total was just over $2600. Considering how much costs for everything have gone up, I imagine it would have been way less if I would have done this 3 years ago when I first started thinking about it. I don't know how their prices compare to others, I just wanted it done asap so I didn't shop around like I usually do. However, I'm very happy with the price, the company and the results so far. I was willing to go with Northwest Weatherization on the strength of their reputation and reviews, even though they cost more than another company I was considering. But they completely dropped the ball on my efforts to find out whether they could truly insulate my 110-year-old frame home. After coming to my home twice -- once to give an initial estimate, the second time to look what was beneath the original siding (nothing but studs, it turned out) -- they were supposed to let me know whether they could do the job, and if the price would change. They never got back to me despite several text and phone call messages to Justin, the technician for the company. So I went with the other company. We recently had NW Weatherization blow insulation into our old lathe and plaster walls. We're happy with the service we received. They left the house pretty clean. There was a little bit of dust to clean up after the fact, but there's only so much you can expect when they have to drill a couple of dozen holes into lathe and plaster. The holes were filled and spackled, then sanded when it dried, ready to be painted. Hopefully we'll really feel the benefits during the next cold snap. read more

Short version. Am I happy with their overall work? No. Would I use them again? No and they are losing a project that is 4 times the size at my mother in laws place which they are likely happy with as I am a tough customer as I want things done right and built to last of which I haven't seen with them. They even flagged this review on Google because they don't want their dirty laundry out there. So it went from a 2ish star down to a 1. Long story so after a roof replacement I found mold due to poor intake ventilation and called NW insulation as they were used by the previous owners. Ryan came out for an estimate and was very nice said it was pretty straightforward and also was going to be very economical. Some of the previous cardboard used had fallen down and vents had plugged up. I am happy I called someone as it helped to figure out the issues and my venting is better but now with the poor quality of work I now need to have a roofer recheck their work and caulk the vents 20 feet up on a ladder. We don't caulk is what Ryan said when asked and to hire a handyman. The a guy who installed the vents from the outside up on a ladder had a caulking gun in his hand at one point but didn't do it. I am now left with improperly installed plastic interior vents sideways, an eave vent full of insulation and a ladder to rent to caulk the vents if i do that myself. I didn't expect to hire a company to then do work and clean up once they left. Other mentionables are leaving my place dirty 2 of 3 visits and a guy needing to go #2 at my place on 2 different occasions. Good luck if you use them. I would happily have paid 3x for a solid company to come shore up my house once and permanently. read more

We scheduled the installation. Crew was OT. They worked well together. They installed R-38 insulation, vapor barrier, insulated access hatches and our knee wall with R-15 and VPAB Cover 16 OC. Work was completed ahead of scheduled commitment. The crew cleaned up all debris. They were polite, competent and respectful. They addressed all of our concerns. I interviewed 7 companies before choosing Northwest Weatherization for my attic project. The job was to suck out old insulation and to install new insulation and the bid was competitive with other companies. I picked them after having a consultation from Ryan who was straightforward, honest and very quick to respond to any questions I had about the project. The workers were very nice, efficient, answered my questions about the job, and cleaned up the workspace so I couldn't even tell they had been there. This is one of the few companies that doesn't seem to need business during a pandemic. Tried calling this company was able to leave a message for a call back. Received a message, "Hi calling you back and we won't call again, if you want you can call to speak with us" Strike 1. Who says that to a customer? Communication is pretty basic customer service skill, but seems pretty hard for this company to master. its not all about "using positive language", which they missed the point on too. I don't need to coddled, but there are other nuances, like making the effort to personalize the conversation even though a lot of resolutions to customer service questions are scripted. I felt brushed off, delayed responses, phone calls not being returned. That is my 2 cents on this company. I was reluctant to reach out to customer support again in fear of another negative experience. I called and cancelled my appointment. There are too many great companies out there, perhaps they are too. I just didn't get that feeling I mattered. read more

My experience with Northwest Weatherization manifests along two lines: First, I had a great experience with the estimator (Kevin) and the overall quality of the work seems great (although I am no expert). But, I also found the office staff slightly rude and off putting, however, I do realize that dealing with customers is inherently difficult, and I likely am over reading their shortness as rudeness. Nevertheless, while the work seems good, and there were some things about the job that were off. First, only one installer seemed very professional. A second installer made a huge mess dumping insulation everywhere, and trying to clean it up, but its still stuck in my plants and along the gutter. Moreover, at one point, a second vehicle showed up, and a third gentleman arrived, but it appeared only to hangout with the original two installers doing work. Ultimately, this was not a terrible problem. Overall, I think everything is good. read more

We had them do insulation in our attic space, crawl space, and ductwork. The price was fair, and the inspection thorough. The crew did decent work, and they arrived a little early which I appreciated. However, I'm not giving them a particularly strong rating or review because the crew was fairly disrespectful to my house. They tracked dirt in all morning going up to the attic space, and didn't clean up after themselves when they were finished. And they broke bird feeders and an awning getting the hose for the insulation up through a second story window. I literally watched them break these things, say to each other "nevermind," and continue working. They never said a thing to me about breaking these items either. Oh, and another weird thing, when they first arrived and rang the doorbell, as I approached the door I saw several of the crew looking through my windows into the living room, the den, etc. I don't know why, but I found that odd. It felt like they were casing my house. I was very happy to have the crew leave, and I probably wouldn't hire them again. read more

Crawlspace cleanup, vapor barrier and insulation. The sales part of this job was upfront, clear and easy to understand. The actual work was poor. The crew was supposed to clean out the crawlspace before placing the plastic vapor barrier. I had to have this crawlspace encapsulated by a different company 6 months after NW was hired. They pulled out 6 bags of rotted wood and other debris that NW Weatherization never cleaned up yet charged me for. When i brought it to the attention of this business. They offered me $50 refund. I accepted and would not recommend this company to a friend. read more

I hired Northwest Weatherization to install attic, crawl space, and ductwork insulation. I won't use them again. This company made such continually bad impression, I don't trust them or their workmanship. Details of my experience are below. Friday: crew arrived, worked some in both the the attic and crawlspace, but left when the crawlspace crew thought they saw brown recluse spiders. Later, I talked with business owner, Dee, who explained that brown recluse spiders are not in this part of Oregon and apologetically guessed that his guys "wussed out", but that the job could be completed the following day as was originally planned. Not a great first impression, but I'm not upset yet. I wouldn't want to be in a crawlspace on a Friday afternoon, either. Saturday: Crew arrived to do attic and crawlspace insulation, worked most of the day, but there was miscommunication about which materials they had left at my home the previous day, so the Saturday crew didn't have everything they needed to finish the duct work. I was told that they discussed materials, but that the Friday crew had told them incorrectly what was at the house. At this point, I don't like that they're going to have to come back for a third day. I'm feeling somewhat leery about how things will turn out, but still pretty upbeat and hopeful. Monday: Dee and Aimee (front desk) tell me that the crew will likely be over this morning to finish. They arrive with only ten minutes' notice in the afternoon and work in the crawlspace. The crew works to finish some of the floor insulation with materials they now have on-sight. They are not sure if water pipe insulation is part of my installation. Yes, it is, and now I realize the crew yesterday likely hadn't understood this either when they were arranging to have all the needed materials. They'll have to come back to insulate the water pipes. Dee expressed that he's not sure why the crew didn't have an accurate work order, but it could have been texted to them if they had asked. Now they will have to come back for a 4th day and it took them until the end of the 3rd day of what was supposed to be a 2-day job to fully understand that the scope of the work also included water pipe insulation. I'm certain at this point that NW weatherization's communication and organization on this job have been deplorable and not at all assured they know what they're doing. Monday night: I email Dee, owner, to tell him that my confidence is shaken and that it's hard for me to trust that the work is being done thoroughly and well with all the miscommunication and poor preparation about materials and work orders. I asked him to have his crew take pictures of the work they've done and explain to me that it's done correctly. Dee assures me that this is unusual, he will get to the bottom of it, and he will be happy to have the guys take pictures to assure me that everything we contracted for is done to standards. Tuesday: We call the fire department since the smell of smoke is coming from the nearly-fully-insulated crawlspace. The firemen definitely smell smoke, but can't be sure where it is coming from. The NW weatherization crew arrive with half an hour's notice (which we are again able to accommodate). The crew also smells smoke. The NW weatherization guys check areas they have installed around wiring and determine that one of the "rookies" had mistakenly put mastic on the oven exhaust fan. They tried to remove the still-wet mastic from where it shouldn't have been on the oven vent, but couldn't; the smell would likely dissipate when the mastic was dry. This was a very unsettling mistake and I'm wondering what else may have been done incorrectly down there. They finish insulating the water pipes and prepared to leave. When asked if they had taken pictures, they say no, and this truly appears to be the first they've heard about it. It very much seemed like they had NOT been asked to take pictures of the work they'd done as Dee had assured me would be done that day. When asked by us, they went back into the crawl space and attic to take pictures. Wednesday: I tell Dee that it's my impression he didn't ask his crew to take pictures. He asks me how I came to the erroneous conclusion that they weren't asked, tells me that "I'm sorry that things got off to a bad start, but I feel we have rectified the problems" and "I hope we can move on, please". Personally, I was much less worried about the bad start we got off to and more concerned about the continual poor planning, communication, and the smoke detector in my crawlspace. Had vapor barrier replaced, insulation put in floor/attic, and duct work sealed/insulated. Ryan came out to bid and did a great job explaining everything and answering all our questions. The crews were all professional, polite, & respectful. Showed up on time every morning and went over the days work scheduled. Plastic off all work areas & cleaned up everyday on the job. No sign they were their that day. The quality of the work was excellent. Very impressed from start to finish. read more

From the super friendly and knowledgeable salesperson to the installers that were considerate of my home (plastic down, shoes off or shoe covers on) and gladly answered all of my questions, I was very happy with this company. I got insulation in my attic, crawl spaces, and walls, and thought their price was competitive and service impeccable. They left some debris on my roof because they worked into the night to get the job done in one day, and when I mentioned it in an email, they had someone out the next morning to clean it up (and he also cleaned out our gutter clogs!). Be very careful with this company. Once you have made a deal, they will not lift a finger to help you. They warn you up front, if you have to change the date they will up charge you $500. I understand this. It makes good business sense to keep your crew working. Ryan came out and I took him through the job. I explained what I needed and he said, he could do it and gave me a quote on the spot. Three weeks later on a Friday before the job was to start, Ryan called and said the material we wanted could not be sourced and I would have to change colors from black to white. Why did Ryan not investigate this earlier? I was traveling on Monday when Ryan's crew came out. Upon arrival back Tuesday, I inspected the job to find they had not completed the job as talked about. They made assumptions and did not even try to contact me. The quality of work went from good to poor. When I questioned Ryan on the work, he made excuses but did offer to have his installer come back out. I mentioned, while he is coming back out, let's have him repair some of the insulation pulled out by electricians. Ryan adjusted the price and agreed. His installer came out and repaired a few places on exterior walls they had missed but did not complete any of the other missing insulation places. One of Ryan's bosses called me and was extremely frustrated at me. I cannot explain how unprofessional this company and it's employees are. They refused to come back and do what Ryan had agreed too. On top of this, they had their billing lady send an invoice asking for payment half way through the install day. Who starts hounding for payment before the job is even complete! Do yourself a favor and go with a competitor. read more

My favorite quote was "We can't guarantee satisfaction, we can only guarantee the work will get done." LOL really? This is coming from the owner? After 15 minutes on the phone with the owner of Northwest Weatherization, that is what you can give me as an explanation? Even though on I was completely unsatisfied with the results, I was still going to pay my bill because I committed to it, but your not even willing to work with me? Total waste of time and money for what I was trying to accomplish. Your salesman informed me that the insulation was going to "drastically" reduce the noise between my floors. I had no change at all. He led me to believe that he was a sound expert and this would make a huge difference. I guess that is why there was no guarantee. And this is my first ever negative review congrats to you Northwest Weatherization! Look somewhere else the owner is a piece of work as he hung up on me at the end! read more

Installation was quick and the guys were courteous and respectful of our home. After installation, the office filled out our rebate forms and mailed them in for us which was super helpful as that is the kind of thing that stays on my to-do list forever. read more

Northwest Weatherization performed an energy audit for my home and, as a result, installed some insulation under my floor. Every interaction I had with the company was great, from the person who set up the appointment to the auditor and the installers. The auditor gave me great tips on things I could do beyond the insulation, and the installers did the job quickly and left the place as if they hadn't been there. read more

My walls were insulated and they had to come back 2 additional times to complete the job because the original installation wasn't done correctly and the insulation didn't completely fill the bay between each 2 X 4 stud. Thanks to the Energy Trust and their thermal gun for pointing out the many deficiencies. Then they came back to patch and paint the boards they had to remove for the 2nd and 3rd visit and did a terrible job. They were supposed to return to fix it, but no show. I would not recommend that anyone use this company. read more

My son's house had zero insulation. No floor, wall and less than 5 inches in the ceiling. I met with Ryan from Northwest Insulation on November 22 in the morning to start a informational process. Ryan was prompt in arriving and was well prepared to go through the installation process. He thermal imaged the walls for additional information which was needed in the end. Ryan was great. Engaging and knowledgeable about the entire process, he continued to give me rock solid prices on the spot. Ryan told me that they were about two weeks out on scheduling and when I asked if it could be done a month out between the Holidays, he assured me that it would not be a problem. Thorough out the process Ryan was always available for my questions and concerns which there were a lot since the job would cost $8400 (including a new vapor barrier underneath the house) and dealing with a company that I was not familiar with. He also was going to take care of all rebates allowed and provided me with tax return information. The work was conducted on a Tuesday morning with the crew being prompt and immediately preparing the house for the extensive traffic that would occur. Thick plastic was laid down in all areas of the house and jumping forward their clean up was exceptional. NI had three different crews at the house each dealing with their own area. Justin and the floor crew working diligently underneath the house for hours and took pictures of the finished product as I has requested. They did a great job. The ceiling crew were there and gone in no time and nearly 15 inches of insulation was blown in. Nearly 60 holes were drilled into the walls for insulation to be blown in )and other that some what appeared to be test holes), everything was well orchestrated. I had my own painter patch and paint using the plugs that the crew left and you would not be able to tell they were even there. Spencer ( one of the owners stopped by toward the end to check on everything and let me know if there was any concerns to alert him) A major point that I would like to make is this: During the ceiling installation there was a situation that arose in that the air intake for the furnace was covered and it caused the ignition switch for the furnace to be damaged and in need of replacement. This became aware that evening in cold weather and Spencer himself came to the house that night and thought to have fixed the problem. After he left, at great expense to Northwest Insulation,( since the problem continued), two HVAC companies came out to try and rectify the problem but it was not until the 3rd company came out two days later that the problem was solved. My son and family are now in a great warm situation thanks to NWI. I cannot remember dealing with a company that stood behind there work without reservation like Spencer and his company did. I would never hesitate recommending Northwest Insulation and moving forward if I build or know of someone building a new home I will insist that they do the work. read more
