This was the second place I had gone for an estimate. Not only was I shown thoroughly the fixes that needed to be done, but I was offered options. I'm dying from stage 4 cancer and had been in Seattle getting chemo all day and its Friday traffic so times are tough since I can't work and I have a 14 gram 14 k ring with 3 kt of diamonds. They advertise the buy gold and diamonds so I stopped by. If was given a fair deal I need money so I would of been willing to sell it. Now keep in mind its a half oz of gold. Scrap is $1000. Its definitely not scrap and has diamonds nice ones. He looks at me like I'm trash and offers me $300! The Yelp review process borders on extortion. Allow to share my personal experience with Mark Jones. My fiancée (now wife) scheduled an appointment with Mark to discuss possibly designing her wedding band. I walked into this situation uncomfortable and worried my wallet was going to be emptied quickly. I couldn't be have been more wrong, Mark is knowledgeable, trustworthy, honest, tactful and polite. Mark explained his background and qualifications and listened to my fiancée wants and concerns. Mark walked us through the process and told us we would have a design in a couple of days. Not only did Mark meet every deadline set forth, he was in constant communication with me. When the wedding ring arrived it was far better then I anticipated. I had read some good reviews about Mark Jones. I trusted him and shouldn't have. He lied to me and I ended up selling him my gold and diamond bracelet for a lot less than I should've, based on his "expert" opinion. Come to find out, the eBay auctions he was referencing were bracelets that weren't even similar to what I had (not diamonds). It was an expensive mistake on my part, so I only hope other people will heed my warning and be very wary of dealing with this man and his business. Mark is amazingly talented and was very passionate about designing my dream wedding ring. I went in not totally sure what I wanted but knew the look I was going for. I have my grandma's wedding ring and didn't want to change it, but wanted to do something to make it more me. Mark came up the idea to make a ring wrap that would fit snugly along my ring and cover the band part, which would preserve the design and original and heirloom ring, but create a detachable band. I came in with pinterest pics and he listened and pulled out and antique spoon that was the exact look I was going for. I cannot tell you how wonderful Mark at Northwest Gold and diamond is. I had a bracelet put away my safety deposit box. It had a lot of sentimental value to me. Not only that it was beautiful. My husband gave it to me the first year we were married 17 years ago. It was a diamond tennis bracelet. I was told by another jeweler that it could be repaired. That the diamonds would have to be set in another gold setting. So I decided that I would sell it as scrap metal and diamonds. When I brought it into Mark I can fix that. For a mere $100 he repaired my beautiful tennis bracelet, and I'm able to wear it. I actually cried. He could've charged me a lot more. He could've taken the gold for scrap gold in the diamonds for scrap diamonds, but he didn't. Not only that he only charged me $100, he could've charged me a lot more for all the work he did. I needed to raise cash quickly for an unexpected expense. I had sold gold coins before, but that's fairly straightforward since coins are 24K (100% gold) and are a standard weight (usually 1 ounce). With coins, then, it's a simple matter of looking up the Troy ounce rate on the Internet and then calling around to see which gold buyer comes closest. They all want a transaction fee but that fee varies widely. You go with the lowest fee. Jewelry is a different story. You have to trust the buyer to give you an accurate weight for your pieces - unless you have a gram scale and can weigh them yourself first. (The gold buyer will weigh them again anyway.) You also have to trust that the buyer can tell the % of gold in your pieces (anywhere from 9%-22%). I like to know what to expect, so I weighed all my pieces before setting out and checked the current price of an ounce of gold. West Seattle Coins was my first stop since it's local. In the past they've purchased coins from me for a $25 transaction fee. I was quite surprised when the staff girl quoted me a 28% broker's fee. I got back in the car. I headed up to Northgate next. They came up with the same gold weight I did. The brokerage fee they quoted me was 25%. Last stop: south to Renton to Northwest Gold & Diamond. It was a bit hard for our GPS to find. I had called first for an appointment and when we were parking I noticed another couple going in the door. When we walked in, they were being told we had a 4:00 appt. and they would have to wait until we were done. I appreciated Northwest Gold honoring the appt. instead of reverting to "first come, first served". The proprietor was pleasant and offered us coffee, bottled water, or a soft drink. As with the others, his calculation of the weight agreed with mine. His broker fee was the lowest of the three: 23%! He also offered to take the stones out a gold pendant so I could keep them. I decided to sell to him and he gave me a check on the spot. The 5% difference in broker fees between my first stop and Northwest Gold & Diamond may not sound like much, but in my case it turned out to mean an extra $320 in my pocket. read more
