Apartment was fine but management is trash. Also there is trash, screws, broken glass all over the parking lot. Management is confrontational and they don't do anything. They take advantage of tenants and raise the rent by like 250 dollars a month (didn't really want to stay with them but my situation would have made not moving again easier--but I moved when they pulled this crap). We haven't even been with no step for a full year and they have allowed maintenance and house tours into our home unannounced on multiple occasions while I have been sleeping and in the shower. Some good properties, but we have had so many issues with management, most recent, they came and did a showing while i was out, and they LOCKED MY BEDROOM DOOR SHUT, the deadbolt and everything, i have a passcode door lock, they never should have broken into my room without my permission in the first place, there were dirty shoe prints on the floor, i live close enough to walk there and i had a nice intern come and unlock it for me, but what the hell? Bad. Leasing agents are really quite nasty. It is expected that when leasing a property, the future tenant might have a significant amount of questions. Especially, when you are targeting college-age kids, of which many are renting a property for the first time ever and have a tight budget to squeeze by on, there are going to be a lot of questions. Asking even a single question seems like a crime. Seems like you only get to ask one question and that's it. We walked into the office to asked a couple questions before we signed the papers and the lady at the desk was incredibly rude and unhelpful. For one, they can never find the paperwork I give them until I say specifically who I gave it to or who emailed me that info. Then, I go to move in and the entire unit it FILTHY! I can't move in until hours later than they told me, and when I finally can it's so dirty I refuse to move in. They come and clean and do everything they should have done months before move in. My fridge was leaking, sinks dripping, walls dirty, carpet disgusting, doors don't work, outlets don't work. This place is terrible. And they can't never seem to have the answer. Also, if you know your parking lot has x amount of spots, do not give out more parking passes than spots. Now many people can't park in their lot they paid for, and have to park but dumpers or on the street. Not to mention the trash men now can't pick up our trash because cars are parked by so the entire place smells, attracting rodents! read more

Hahahah what a joke of a company. Unfortunately, it seems they have a monopoly over the housing in Columbus/near campus and there's a good chance you'll have to use them. If so, good luck. Management is extremely bad with timely and helpful responses. I had issues with my deadbolt getting stuck and got locked out on a Sunday evening. I put in a request and called NorthSteppe to be sure they would be coming. The young kid on the phone said "I don't know the maintenance people's schedule". Didn't ensure me that someone was coming or that he would reach out to make sure I received help. After over an hour & half of waiting (and no text message altering me someone picked up the request), I was forced to call a locksmith so I could get into my apartment as it was approaching 8pm. After the locksmith drilled my bolt and charged me $200, NorthSteppe showed up. I filed a complaint and asked they cover the costs and they denied it. A sewage pipe has broken twice and flooded the basement with nasty, foul poopy water. They come and 'fix' things but basically just slap a bandaid on it and hope for the best. Fast forward to moving out, I cleaned the entire place and patched holes in my wall. I'm being charged $200 in repairs and cleaning fees with no itemized receipt of the damages and repairs done. Mind you, I took over someone's lease - they did not patch any holes in the wall or clean the apartment when I moved in/took over the lease. So these holes have been from living in a space for 4 years. The reasoning was 'Marks on wall beyond normal wear and tear'. According to Ohio Revised Code § 5321.16, landlords are required to provide an itemized list of damages and associated costs within 30 days. It's been more than 30 days & I've sent over 5 emails to multiple NorthSteppe groups and I'm just getting the run around with them. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere. NorthSteppe's properties are old & grimy, falling apart, and they seriously do the bare minimum to keep them running. I'd look elsewhere. Trust the countless horrible reviews. Horrible Management. We had a wall in our home that had mold growing out of it and it took multiple multiple phone calls and maintenance requests to get them to do anything about it. We initially contacted them about it in January and it still wasn't finished when we moved out in July. They made us move out for 2 weeks between leases so they could do "renovations." Having to move out was nothing but inconvenient. Especially when all they did was paint a few walls and charge us $1100. Maintenance guys are very kind is probably the only good thing I have to say. These landlords are the absolute worst. There are no words to describe their incompetencies. I've been renting from them for over a year now and have hated every second. The workers there are predatory and hateful in nature. These guys have ridiculous leasing requirements AND will make you move out for a period during the summer even if you're living in the same house for the next year. Once I requested maintenance because my wall was literally falling apart. The idiots came on a Saturday morning (one month later!) at 7am, and straight up yelled while walking through the house, waking everyone up. Naturally, I was sleeping so I told them to come back later. They did come back, while I was cooking. I had left the door unlocked and left my keys in my room. The idiots didn't do anything to my room, they just inspected the wall. When they left, they locked the door behind them with my keys inside the room. It was 5 degrees outside and I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Then, I called, and they wouldn't come to bring me a spare key, and insisted I had to walk to the leasing agency to get a spare key. So I went to the office in the freezing cold and they give me a spare key. When I try the key, it doesn't even work! These guys are absolute fools. The anecdote above is only an example of their sheer incompetency. These guys deserve the absolute worst. read more

They expected me to put up a full months rent before even getting a final lease. I got explicit confirmation that they would not refund this if I found the terms of the lease unacceptable, or if I decided not to sign for any reason. They justified this by claiming it covers "liquid damages". This is frankly bullsh*t, how does the application process cost over a thousand dollars! Having to put down so much money without even having a chance for my lawyer to look at the lease is the most unacceptable and scummy thing I have heard from any landlord. Further, they claimed this is "standard practice" in Columbus. So not only do they have an amoral term for signing the lease, they lied to me. I moved into a property under NorthSteppe Realty recently and have been extremely impressed by their management and customer service, not to mention the aesthetically pleasing renovations in our unit (absolutely gorgeous!). The only reason this is not 5 stars is due to several issues upon move in- small maintenance issues such as AC unit not turning on, shower not being turned on in the wall, and back door not locking properly. I put in a maintenance request at 1:30am for these things, and it had already been addressed and given a work order by 5:30am! Maintenance was able to visit the property and work on all requests the day after sending the request in. They also reached out several times throughout the day to ensure everything was resolved and we were satisfied with the service. Overall, we have had amazing and professional service thus far with NS and are extremely happy and satisfied to be living in this unit. *Will update review as needed* read more

I was excited about North Steppe and had high expectations for their company. After the renewal period for their properties was up, we decided to tour one of their homes on a Sunday. Our group liked the house so much, we got together all the applications and the security deposit and showed up at exactly 9 AM on the next day (Monday, the first day the office was open since our tour). We handed in the paperwork and our deposit and they began to process the papers. After 10 minutes of reviewing and beginning to go over the lease, they came over and told us that the house had actually just then decided to renew their lease. This was about a week AFTER the renewal deadline and after we had been processing our application for ten minutes. EXTREMELY unprofessional and rude. They said "This property is actually now unavailable," and did not say anything else. They just looked at us and waited for us to get up and leave, without offering any concession or other homes we could tour. This company deserves 0 stars. read more

I wish I could tell everyone who thinks about staying here how much I advise against it! I have stayed in my apartment for 4 years and it was a miserable time. There have been so many issues including sewage coming up from the bathtub to garbage accumulating in the parking lots. The heating system is completely outdated (as is the entire apartment complex) and if it wasn't for my space heater I would say it is unlivable in the winter time (never got my thermostat above 65° during cold months with the heat on high). During leasing times which is December-July you get showings 1-2 times per week which is crazy. The washing machines would break periodically and would make it very hard to wash clothes with all the other tenants. Used outside laundromats many times. Walls are very thin and you can hear full conversations of your neighbors. Then when you move out and think the nightmare is over, you'll get hit with some large cleaning fees and I left the place spotless. Also had a friend who stayed at one of their apartments nearby to see if he was charged and it was the same thing. Continue your search for a new apartment company. read more

As soon as Northsteppe Realty bought the building I lived in, they made it clear that they wanted us all out. I came home one day to find an eviction notice on my door. It stated that, as I was not in a lease, and they were not going to have any month-to-month tenants, I was being given notice to vacate. I had a lease, and it wasn't up for a few weeks. I was already planning to move, but my new apartment wasn't ready yet. Every few days, a couple of guys would come around and knock on my door to see if I'd moved out yet. A few times I came home and noticed signs that someone had been in the apartment. At one point they put a note on my door saying they were going to start remodeling. I came home a couple of days later to find they had ripped the kitchen cabinets off the wall. My food and other contents were on my couch; the soy sauce was lying down and had spilled. Not to mention they were tearing my home apart while I legally lived there. I tried to talk to the owner, a man named Rick Graff, but it was very clear he had no intention of speaking with me. He was always out and never returned any of my calls or messages. I finally moved out. After my first night in the new apartment, I realized I'd forgotten something. When I went back the next day to get it, workers had already opened the place up and getting on with their demo and remodeling. It was a regular construction site, all precipitated by the fact that they'd clearly entered when I didn't answer the door that morning. And my lease was still in effect. As I was preparing to move out, one of the men told me that they were going to throw away all the furniture -- it had been a furnished apartment -- and it was okay to take furniture. So I took a couple of things with me. When I got the move-out acknowledgement, they had kept my entire security deposit, saying that furniture was missing and the appliances were "very dirty", which was a lie. I needed the money from that security deposit. When I tried again to contact Rick Graff, he was still unavailable and never returned any of my messages. The only reason I didn't sue him was because I didn't have the money. Update: I see my review has been thrown in a mass burial pit of "not recommended" unfavorable reviews. This company is so terrible I made this account just to let the public know to NEVER and i mean NEVER under any circumstance lease with Northsteppe Reality. I've attached one of 500+ photos i have of COCKROACHES that were in my apartment for 4 months. I only got rid of them because I paid for extermination products and treated the unit myself over the course of 4 months. I had to take them to court 3 separate times before they agreed to give me one month of rent back, despite me being HOMELESS for 4 because the infestation was that bad. The reason they have roaches is because they have 4 buildings sharing 1 dumpster that only gets picked up every 2-4 weeks and is constantly overflowing very close to the buildings. They also threatened to evict us while we had our rent in escrow multiple times which is illegal. Another time my dishwasher broke and was flooding the kitchen and the maintenance man had the AUDACITY to tell me "not sure what to do here, maybe you should youtube it" and left so I had to fix it myself and buy a part from Lowe's. They are scammers, absolute worst leasing experience I have ever had and that is saying a LOT for osu campus housing. read more

Last minute chose to lease with this company as they were the only company around campus with available apartments (go figure). When i moved in during summer the central air didn't work. The extent to which they clean between tenants is questionable - i definitely suggest bleaching and disinfecting everything before moving in. I had a neighbor couple that had some domestic violence incidents and this company didn't respond when i asked for intervention after contacting the police 3 separate times. They didn't salt the stairs or shovel during winter. Overall they're unprofessional and negligent to the upkeep of their apartments. The staff is extremely rude and don't seem to value their tenants whatsoever. It appears that the company is run by college freshman in an attempt to save money; a reflection of the service you'll get if you decide to lease with them. Never again read more

NorthSteppe Realty is easily the WORST company I have ever rented from. My roommates and I kept our house clean, yet we had roaches, rats, mice, and so on. Their maintenance staff was kind but they half-assed absolutely everything. The insulation in our home was god awful and NorthSteppe refused to fix this for us so our utilities were always sky high. Our basement was filled with black mold and we were unaware of this until after move in. Once again, no help from NorthSteppe. SO incredibly happy that our lease with them has ended but feeling bad for anyone who chooses to rent from them in the future. I consider myself to be a pretty tolerant and rational person. But if I had to use one word to describe North Steppe, the first thing that comes to my mind is MALICIOUS. Consider this to be my public service announcement to the renting community of Central Ohio: Don't rent from this company!! North Steppe are beyond negligent, they are deliberately deceitful. I rented an absolutely gorgeous apartment from them that looked like my dream home when I first walked through it, but if it wasn't one problem it was another and North Steppe did everything in their power to avoid taking care of things. When I moved in, the deadbolt on the front door was broken so we had no way to lock our apartment. Security reasons aside, this is a direct violation of Columbus fire code. Even though we sent written notice to North Steppe and called almost daily, it wasn't until we got a letter from the fire marshal ordering the repair that they fixed our door. At this same apartment, we had repeated issues with homeless people sleeping in the basement that was a common area for the building. North Steppe's solution? Call the police and wait until they leave. Again and again and again. I'll stick to my own stories here, but as the largest rental agency in the Campus area I can tell you dozens of other horror stories from students who have been unfortunate enough to have to deal with them. Just Google "North Steppe lawsuit" and you'll get plenty more. Most of the time North Steppe won't answer the phones when you call. If you are lucky enough to get a human on the phone, you'll get a student who has zero authority nor knowledge on how to take care of things. Want something done? You'll have to talk to Mark, who is the only person there with half a brain and a lick of authority. Mark is actually a really cool guy who probably shouldn't be working for the worst renting agency I've ever experienced. Unfortunately, he also plays for Team Evil Agency and so sometimes lawyers have to be called in to deal with matters (my best friend and I both have had to do this on separate occasions -- not pleasant). Yes, they have some nice properties. Yes, they are really convenient being centrally located on Campus and having a functional website. Just an awful renting company. They always look to do quick fixes on problems in apartments and are looking for cheapness rather than quality. For instance, my friends had their windows replaced as part of their "renovated" apartment and the crew left shattered glass on the ground. They then insisted that it was the tenants' job to clean that up. As for me, I had to repeatedly call them for when the heating would go down in the middle of the winter. It would get fixed but then the same issue would crop up the next day. I had another set of friends who were less fortunate and were actually without heat for days. NorthSteppe Realty has gone above and beyond as a rental office. They are fairly relaxed group, and sometimes a little disjointed (the maintenance man didn't notify me he was coming over and set off the alarm, I paid rent but they forgot to notate it), HOWEVER, they are genuine people who treat everyone else with respect. They replaced all the carpet and the tile in the apartment before I moved in, when I told them I wanted to paint the place, they primed it for me for free and aren't requiring me to paint it back, their maintenance man is friendly and shows up within 24 hours of you posting a need on their board... the list goes on and on. The cherry on top of it all, however, was when I lost my job and they were willing to renegotiate a new end date with me so I wasn't stuck in a lease for an apartment I can't afford. It was more than I could have hoped for and it's really eased everything. I can't speak for their campus properties, but as someone who rented from them in the Short North, I thought they did an excellent job. read more

I got in touch with their representative, who gave me multiple references so I could check with current tenants in the building, all of who had great things to say about their apartments and the service they've received from the company, that's is my experience as well. Maintenance was very speedy (always showing up the day I called or the next) being flexible with many of my needs. You can defiantly tell that love was put into our apartment.
