my friends and i are of age (22+) and the guy rejected us because he didn't like our vibe. he told my friend that her real ID didn't match the book??? why do they have a book... get with the times and get a scanner. And then he was extremely rude after we told him we were more than comfortable to wait for the police. This is THE place for Finger Lakes wines. Yes, they have tons of other stuff. Including a million little miniature bottles of your favorite liquor and liquer. Which is kind of odd and random, but there it is. This is where I broke my teeth on wines, figuratively, and the establishment is still going strong many years later. 1976 Reserve Dr. Konstantin Frank Dessert Riesling? Yep, they had it. Oxidized to hell, but worth tasting the history. Seriously, they have a great selection of a wide variety of local wineries, which are at amazing prices. Dr. Konstantin Frank, Herman Weimar, Lamoreaux Landing...the list goes on and on. Champion Charonnays, Gorgeous Gewurztraminers, and my favorite white grape: the Royal Rieslings. Dirt cheap, too. Priced around $10 (reserves are $20ish), the wines of this region are a steal. Avoid the reds. Also, as a plus other wines from New York State and Canada...look for your Millbrook Pinot Noirs, the random Long Island reds, and the world-class Inniskillin wines. And they ship. But not to Texas. Texas, where it doesn't rain water or wine, apparently. read more

Homie, this is like the BevMo of Ithaca. It's got a whole room devoted to French wines, with sub-sections by appellation. Popular bottles have reviews alongside them so you have a sense of what they'll be like. Equal attention is paid to wines and spirits from California, Spain or wherever else you please. My biggest problem with the big-box wine vendors is the employees are a little impersonal and you have to sift through a number of hyped -- or just plain bad -- bottles in order to find misshelved jewels. Don't let that sway you. I actually like coming to Northside; it's full of fermented treasures. This is the place to get your wine or spirits in Ithaca. For wine it is fantastic. The employees have recommended several different bottles to me over the years and every single one has gotten me compliments. If you give them a price range, a type of wine and a flavor profile, they will recommend something fantastic. The prices are reasonable; you can find a good bottle of pretty much any style of wine for under $15. As for the liquor, the prices can be kind of insane for the popular stuff. A few months ago a 750ml bottle of Jack Daniels no. 7 was nearly $40. However, the less popular brands are often reasonably priced. For example, "Early Times" is a fantastic budget whiskey, priced here at only $13 for a 750ml bottle. read more

Great place to pick up wine from the Finger Lakes. I came here to buy some local wines to bring home as gifts for my parents. Despite being a northern Californian, I know absolutely nothing about wine, so I needed help picking stuff out. The staff here is incredibly knowledgeable about wine from all over the world. The guy who helped me had over 30 years of experience with wines and gave me some good recommendations. All their items are very well organized by region or country. You can of course find other alcohol products like beer and hard liquor as well. My only complaint is that they don't really provide you anything to safely transport your bottles. They put two bottles per paper bag with plenty of wiggle room so the cardboard they stuff in there really has no effect. read more

I live relatively close to North Side, so I don't have to go far for my wine and spirit fix. They are competitively priced and their selection is enormous. I moved from a small town east of Ithaca where the liquor store had a nice selection of local and international wines but North Side is dedicated to the Finger Lakes wines, which I personally think are some of the best in the US. They also have a large room devoted to International wines, mainly from western Europe. The place gets really hoppin' during the school year (duh) so you'll find a lot of different people shopping there. You'll find the krazy college kids, the uppity Cayuga Heights rich folk and then you'll find the normal middle class drink for the pleasure of it people. read more

Don't let the discount liquor outside appearance or edge-of-town strip mall location fool you, this place has an epic wine selection, naturally particularly comprehensive in the finger lakes wine. I would've liked to be able to track down some staff to help me navigate the racks and racks of the local nectar, but wound up with a damn tasty dry ros from Seneca lake by Hermann Weimer - mineral with lots of citrus, but a full body and long in the mouth, perfect for the longest day of the year. My husband and I stopped in here from out of town to grab some bourbon and a few bottles of wine. The prices seemed decent and there was a good wine selection. While perusing the bourbon selection, an employee (possibly a manager?) came up to us and asked what we were looking for. My husband asked him if they carry W.L. Weller, which is the bourbon we typically keep on hand at home but it's hard to find as they don't distribute a lot. The guy told us they carry Weller when they have it in stock, but advised us to buy every bottle if we ever see it at a liquor store. No big deal and nothing we haven't heard before. We moved on to check out wine. I had 5 bottles of wine in our basket, my husband grabbed a bottle of single malt he'd been wanting to try and we were about ready to leave. My husband stopped the same employee from before and asked if they ever get a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle in stock (a rare bourbon we've been wanting to try for years). The guy actually said "yeah, but if we ever did, I wouldn't sell it to you." My husband has never seen this guy in his life....asks him if there's a reason and the guy says "I get people trying to flip that stuff all the time so I don't sell it to customers I don't know." It was awkward to say the least and I can't get over how incredibly rude and presumptuous the guy was. We put our basket down and left without buying anything and we'll never be back. read more

As a loyal customer for over 20 years I've hesitated to post about the changes that have taken place. Under prior ownership and management this was a remarkable store. Huge selection, excellent service, friendly and knowledgable staff. Since its sale to a member of the Wegmans family the selection has shrunk, the staff has shrunk, and the knowledge of the staff has shrunk. Ironic since Wegmans is itself an amazing store. In its current form, Northside would be an excellent wines and spirits department for a supermarket, but its a shadow of what it once was. Perhaps thats the idea. read more

Inconsiderate of service dogs. The only reason I didn't give them a 1 star rating is because they do have a very large selection and the man who helped me find champagne was very nice. Today my friend and I came her to pick up a few bottles and I brought my service dog in training in his official vest with me. When I was checking out, the woman behind the counter said to me, "Just so you know, we don't allow pets in here." This happens sometimes so I kindly responded, "Oh of course. He's a service dog." The woman was not pleased with this response. She gave me a condescending smile and in an incredibly rude voice said, "Well I'm just letting you know that we don't allow pets. This is a new policy and I wasn't sure if you've heard it yet. But people used to bring their pets in here all the time." She clearly didn't believe my dog was a service dog and clearly did not want him in the store. As I was leaving, and elderly man almost walked into me and my dog and he acted startled. The woman at the counter then had the audacity to glare at me and say, "This is why we don't allow pets." To say I'm furious is an understatement. I will NEVER be returning to this store again. That woman should be grateful she is an able bodied individual and does not need a service dog. She was rude, condescending, and highly inconsiderate. She has lost future business for this store owner from me and many friends. It's sad because I'm sure not every employee thinks this way. But I refuse to go somewhere where I will be disrespected and service dogs looked at as they are pests. I actually downloaded this app specifically to write this review because my experience was so off-putting. read more
