The timing wasn't ideal, and at first, the staff member at the counter seemed hesitant to offer a tasting, expressing concern that we might not have enough time to fully enjoy the experience. Understandably, with just 20 minutes left, they didn't want to rush through what should be a relaxed, immersive tasting. However, after we reassured her that we'd be happy to share a tasting and keep things brief, her demeanor quickly shifted. She transitioned from cautious to warm, professional, and incredibly accommodating, making us feel truly welcomed despite the late hour. In moments like this, it's always great to see how much the right attitude and hospitality can enhance a wine tasting experience. The Tasting Experience We sampled five different wines, each offering something unique. Even though we were moving quickly through the tasting, we still took time to appreciate the flavors and characteristics of each pour. Ithaca Red - A Standout Favorite One wine that immediately stood out was the Ithaca Red, a dry red with bright fruit-forward notes of raspberry and strawberry jam, balanced by a medium body and a lingering spicy finish. It struck that perfect balance between vibrant acidity and smooth tannins, making it an incredibly enjoyable, easy-drinking red. It was so good that we didn't hesitate to grab two bottles to take home, ensuring we could enjoy it again later. Lemberger - A Dark, Spiced Delight Another highlight was the Lemberger, a varietal that often flies under the radar but consistently impresses me. This one had deep, rich dark fruit flavors that reminded me of ripe blackberries and plums, complemented by a lightly spiced finish. It was well-structured yet approachable, a perfect choice for those who love medium-bodied reds with a little complexity. Though those two stood out the most, every wine we sampled was well-crafted, balanced, and a true reflection of the region. A Fun Bills vs. Steelers Moment In addition to the great wine, we had an unexpected and fun football-related conversation with one of the winery's owners, who happens to be a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan. As soon as he spotted my Steelers jacket, the conversation naturally steered toward football--a classic AFC rivalry moment. We ended up chatting about the infamous Bills vs. Chiefs game (yes, that controversial first down call!), and we found some rare common ground--both agreeing that Buffalo did, in fact, get that first down. It was a fun, lighthearted exchange that added another layer of personality to the visit. Moments like this remind me why I love visiting small, locally-owned wineries--you're not just drinking wine, you're connecting with the people behind it. A Winery Worth Revisiting Despite the short timeframe, Six Mile Cellars left a lasting impression. One of the very few vineyards that are actually in Ithaca. Relatively easy to get to via public transit. Not super walkable (although I did) as there is no sidewalk for most of the way (obviously not the vineyard's fault and not factoring into my review, just information for future visitors). I made a reservation for a tasting online. In person it's $1 cheaper as you don't have to pay a convenience fee which I wish I had known about but not losing sleep over $1. Vineyard is very pretty and there's plenty of seating both inside and out. Decent wifi which is nice as the area is a bit of a dead zone. It's $8 ($9 online) for 6 tastes of wine and you can choose from their full list. You can also opt to add on tastings of spirits for $1 each. They have a decent selection organized into whites, reds, and sweet wines. For spirits, they have vodka, gin, grappa, lemoncello, orangecello, and an amaretto. Unfortunately I just didn't love any of the wines. The rose was my favorite of the ones I tried. Spirits were better; the grappa and the gin were both excellent. Glasses are around $6-8 each and bottles are in the $12-23 range. You get $2 off a bottle with a tasting. They were very nice and gracious about complimentary tastings; for example the glass I wanted was not one of the ones that I picked during my tasting and they poured a complimentary taste first so I could know if I liked it. Overall the people were lovely, vineyard is lovely, and it's a good experience overall. You won't have any groundbreaking wines here but it's still worth a visit especially considering the proximity to Ithaca. read more

We were in town for our daughter's move out and went to this wine tasting place. It was not a very large vineyard but still impressed us with the scenery and overall rustic charm. Once inside the restaurant we were greeted by the wine tasting assistant . She was very knowledgeable about the wines and was a great entertainer who kept us thoroughly engaged by providing minute details of the wines and on latest rumors around town. After wine tasting we got ourselves a wine bottle that we liked from our session and sat in the patio enjoying the views and the wine. Stopped here with friends about a month ago on an upstate Ny road trip. It was pretty quiet, only 5 or 6 other people around. We did a tasting and we were very pleased with the price, I believe it was only about $6 per person if we bought a bottle of wine. We started with the tasting then purchased a bottle to enjoy on the patio. We were lucky to get there towards the end of the day so the sky was getting all golden and we took some beautiful pictures from the patio. The white wines were delicious, the red were not as much our taste but we still enjoyed the variety. We had our own road trip snacks in the car which we brought to the patio and enjoyed with our bottle of wine while we relaxed and chatted amongst ourselves. I would definitely return! read more

My wife and I visited on a quiet late Friday afternoon. We had checked into our hotel and were looking for something to do before dinner. Our neighbor has a daughter who lives in Ithaca and recommended we stop in for a tasting. They are dog friendly. We did not have reservations for a tasting and at this time of the day, it did not matter. We were greeted warmly and began a tasting. They provide a lengthy list of whites, reds, blushes, and distillery drinks to choose from. You get to choose any six for $8. Our host was pleasant and pointing out the pros of each pour. My wife and I both agreed that the amount poured for the taste was not acceptable. I would estimate two tablespoons. Not an exaggeration. It was by far the smallest pour of any winery we had ever visited in our lives. Then again it was only $8. The wines were tasty, especially the Rieslings and the spumante. We each had a glass of our favorite wine and sat in their lounge area that offered a view of the vineyard. There was indoor/outdoor seating and since it was very hot, decided to stay indoors. In the middle of our tasting, there was a manager or someone in charge, who came over to our host and called him over to the register. We could overhear the conversation and it was disciplinary in nature. Something to do about a running tab for a customer. Waiting until customers were out of range might have been better. We felt bad for our host and left him a nice tip. As I mentioned, the tastings are inexpensive and there is plenty of parking in their private parking lot. There is a nice shop where you can buy the wines by the bottle amongst other things. The winery is located off a main road a few miles outside of downtown Ithaca. read more

Very cute little vineyard! My whole family did the wine tasting and it was great! They are dog friendly too and we were able to bring our dog inside with us for the tasting. Our server was wonderful and explained the wine well. Their wine is great and we bought a few bottles! We got to explore the grounds after and there is a beautiful little pond with a fountain and lots of grass, it looks like you could take a glass of wine and sit out there and have a picnic! Come for the views, stay for the cheese and the Ithaca White (or the Cab Franc...or the Rose) Their COVID-set up is a bit odd. You can only sit at one of the bars if you're doing a wine tasting, which I guess you must have to reserve in advance? If you're just popping in for wine by the glass, you can post up at one of the indoor or outdoor tables. Weather permitting, the views from the covered patio are wonderful! There were only 3 employees when we popped in on a sleepy Sunday afternoon, and there were plenty of seating options for group of 3. We awkwardly ordered at the counter/ cashier kiosk. It was a little strange that we couldn't order at the bar, but whatevs. Chalk it up to the new normal. I sampled the Rosetta (Rose), Cab Franc, and Ithaca White - all were delicious and blended well (whatever that means). I truly enjoyed the wines, and I thought the by-the-glass price was not too bad. The Ithaca White stands out as the fav. Fruity and refreshing, not overly sweet. They don't offer much in the way of food, but there are some snack-worthy cheese varieties available for purchase. read more

Excellent vineyard! We stopped in on our way home to nyc, and very happy we did. The service was EXTREMELY friendly and they were happy to have our shitz zu ("Big Ern") inside and all around the property. We didn't have a reservation and they were all booked, but still let us try a few wines and buy a glass to enjoy around the pond, which was quite peaceful and well kept. They have a large outdoor deck and massive horseshoe tasting area inside. The wines were fantastic! Their red blend was delicious and I'm planning to order a few more online. Had a fantastic blackberry undertone to it. We brought a few bottles back to NY to give to friends. My friend "Big Al," who works in insurance, raved about the bottle as well. The service was phenomenal. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We opted to get a glass of wine (or two) versus a tasting and they were nice enough to let us try the wine before selecting a glass. There were some great options - a good selection from very sweet to dry. I chose a sweet wine and was very happy with my selection. The only con was the food selection. I was glad they had some cheese, meat, and crackers to purchase; however, it would have been nice to have a bit more. We opted for some of their sweeter wines and having tasted in quite a lot of other wineries, we felt like they were just ok. This was a great place for a family wine tasting. The views are gorgeous here, high up on a clear sunny day. This place is dog-friendly! I sampled 6 wines for $5. There is also an option for spirits which is 3 types for $3. The choices are vodka, gin, grappa, limoncella, orangecello, and amóre. I did not sample any white wines, though I did hear only positive comments from my family that did. There are 7 white wines to choose from and 5 Rosé's and Reds to choose from. I tried the Rosato 2015 (Rosé), Ithaca Red, Syrah 2013. I really quite enjoyed the Ithaca Red because of the after taste. From the Semi-Sweet and Sweet Wines, there are 5 to choose from. Here, I found my all time favorite wine. I tried the Odyssey blush, Cantare (which means to sing, how beautiful), and bellisimo. Bellisimo was the sweetest with 7% residual sugar. My favorite is cantare. I got a few bottles to bring home. I did also sample the limoncella, orangecello, and amóre. Limoncella was really cool because the person who made it was trained in Italy and sticks to traditions very closely, orangecello was the sweetest, and amóre smelled strongest of them all (for the almond lovers out there, this is the drink for you). There is a $2 discount for for people that buy wine after sampling. If you buy without sampling, you can receive a 5% off deal when buying 3 bottles and a 10% off deal when buying 6 bottles. After walking around, I got the 6 bottle deal and it came with a free bottle opener made in Italy! Shout out to Six Mile Creek Vineyard for being super nice! This place is open 11am-6pm everyday of the week. The staff are all very kind and knowledgable and carry themselves very professionally. There is a large sitting area for people that aren't wine tasting or are waiting for people that are. This area overlooks the rest of the vineyard, and the view is gorgeous. There are many things to buy for those who do not enjoy wine or are underage. There were many cheese's, towels, hats, flavored lip balms, cute quotes, wine carrying bags, locally made soap bars, etc. Besides the main shop, the rest of the vineyard is beautiful. Had a pleasant visit to Six Mile Creek Vineyard on Monday afternoon. Was not crazy about the wine, though they did have a few decent ones, but would absolutely return to get more of their Amore spirit. Quality: While I did not fall in love with the wine at Six Mile Creek Vineyard, I was a fan of their Spirits. During our visit we did tastings of each. For wine we tried Chardonnay Reserve 2019, Seyval Blanc 2019, Vignoles 2017, Riesling (Semi-Dry) 2019, Avery's Spumante, Ithaca Red, Pinot Noir 2019, Cabernet Franc 2019, Quintessence 2018, Ithaca Blush, Pasa Tiempo, and Bellissimo. The only true standout was the Cabernet Franc 2019, though the Chardonnay Reserve 2019 was better than expected. For spirits we tried the Gin, Limoncella, and Amore. And the Amore, which is inspired by Amaretto, is truly the reason to visit and was the item we were not leaving without. Wonderful flavor and something easy to imagine adding to all sorts of cocktails. Quantity: Large pours during both tastings, giving a full look into each item's flavor. Value: $8 for a Tasting of 6 Wines. $3 for a Tasting of 3 Spirits. $11-$23 for Bottles of Wine. $25 for Bottles of Spirits. Ambiance: Six Mile Creek Vineyard is located in Ithaca, New York. The tasting room is in a large brown barn at the top of a hill. Large sliding glass doors open a back deck, which provides scenic views of the area as well as the rows of vines. It was too chilly during our visit to sit outside, but we did take in a look of the area blanketed in snow. Inside the tasting room is a large central bar that was been surrounded in plexiglass. It looked a bit like a bank, with your pours being passed through cut out slots. An inventive approach to COVID. The rest of the space was filled with items to-go, as well as a ton of Christmas decor. Crowd: We arrived soon after they opened, but not even halfway through our tasting two larger parties arrived. Service: One of the staff members saw us tucking our dog in the car before heading inside and insisted we bring him in. He was then provided an entire bin of toys and several treats. If you're heading north from the NYC area, this is a great place to begin your Finger Lakes Winery experience. It's very easy to find (parking right off the main road into town), and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. I was greeted with a wine-making conversation and a glass of red from a barrel before I even made it into the tasting room; isn't THAT nice? The tasting room has a deck overlooking the vineyard and the mountain vista. There are other wineries that are larger and with more stunning views, but this was certainly beautiful and charming in its modesty. The tasting was inexpensive, and they included it in the cost of the bottle of white that I purchased (Vignoles, 2013). Having lived in Upstate New York and California and visiting many wineries, and also visiting wineries in several countries in Europe, I can compare this visit to what you should expect. I visited here with a party of 4. We had reservations. Apparently this means little, because they were crowded, and very rushes. The server tried to do a good job, but twice she was pressured to move things along when she was explaining the wine. We had 6 (tiny) pours, and were out of there in 19 minutes. Things might be more pleasant if we had visited on a weekday. About Safety: The place was packed (and loud). While there were plexiglass dividers between the customer and the server, that was one of the few COVID precautions taken. A sign indicated that unvaccinated people should wear masks when standing (or course they didn't check status). There was little air movement within the room from small overhead fans, but no apparent air exchange with the outside, except when someone came through the door. COVID is spread via droplets (sneeze and coughs) which masks and barriers reduce, but also via aerosols (infected people breathing in and out) which linger. A crowded room with little air circulation, and loud massless people is not conductive to public health. Most of the wine was decent, and the Riesling was pretty good, but you didn't get very much time to contemplate what you might want to purchase. Running people in and out as quickly as you can doesn't seem like a good business model for a winery. read more
