Is it great for Saratoga? Or great on a scale that might rival big-town events? First Night Saratoga, which happens on New Years Eve starting at around 5:30 pm and runs till a little after midnight when the fireworks go off in Congress Park, was world-class great this past December 31. There were so many simultaneous acts, probably 20 of them at any point in time if you count all the people performing in store windows, that you sink into a delirious panic realizing there is more good stuff than you can possibly see. There seem to be different philosophies on how to manage the evening. Some folks focus on the "headliners", solid rock and roll cover bands, at the civic center. There are youth-specific venues at Lake Ave school (young kids), the Y (middle school) and the high school. After hopping around and seeing maybe 15 acts the first 3 hours, I found myself in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church and realized this was the cool place to be, not least because you are watching and listening to vintage Woodstock-style rock in a baptist church in front of biblical quotes, stained glass windows and a huge pipe organ. I happily headed home at 11:45 but turned back to watch the fireworks in the 3 degree weather. They were world class too.

They have been switching from the East River to doing the display on the Hudson back and forth. This year will be on the Hudson, but the fireworks will be shot up to 1000 feet high, making it more visible for those of us viewing it from rooftops on the East side. I personally don't want to miss it this year, as my building's rooftop will not only be open, but I probably will spend my last 4th of July in the big apple for this summer only. The display will start about 9:20pm.. and usually lasts almost 20 to 30 minutes with a grand finale of tons of fireworks at the end. It is one of the world's greatest displays, and not to be missed. The 4th celebrates the USA day we declared our independence, and I for one am grateful for John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, and others who bravely signed their name to such a famous document. :) Happy July 4th to all... usually it's a classic day for BBQ's, ice cream, hot dogs, and many other American classics in foods.

I don't think it will ever switch back, and you can be sure there are financial reasons for that which have nothing to do with throwing a great celebration of our independence. It's a shame, but whatever. One less reason to ever shop at Macy's? Not that I needed one. For the record, I saw 5 East River shows before they moved, and each was more incredible than the last. Really a moving, nearly transcendent experience to share with so many other residents of NYC. Now it's about craning my neck to maybe make out a couple of sparklies, shrugging, then getting back to my burger. I hope Jersey is kicking in on the cost of this thing.

I try to go to a couple Syracuse Mets games a season and have some great memories from their years…read moreas a then-Nationals / now-Mets farm team (I really started getting to minor league games maybe... 10 years ago). You get to see some great players before they get called up to the big leagues (saw Aaron Judge play here multiple times for RailRiders vs Chiefs games, including back in 2016 when Nick Swisher was hitting next to him in the lineup as well), and plenty of major leaguers as they're coming back up to the big leagues as part of their rehab assignment (saw deGrom's final rehab start here in 2022). They have some fun promotions, and I've never had issues with parking for games or whatnot (honestly, given the location, it's a pretty easy place to get into and out of). I *do* wish they had some better or more interesting concession options... but they'll sometimes get a little inventive for things like "Duel of the Dishes" games, including having salt potato pizza available (which, if you're wondering, is delicious). They've made some nice upgrades in the last couple years too... and having watched games from a variety of different seats, I can tell you that it's all good no matter where you sit (though I am admittedly bias to watching from somewhere along the first base line). TL;DR Syracuse Mets fans will tell you to come to the stadium to watch the "Most Amazin' Show on Dirt"! It's definitely a good time, and while some other minor league stadiums & teams are at the top of my list? I love getting the chance to attend a Syracuse Mets game.
