My mom wanted to stop here on our way to Sharon Springs. Apparently it was quite a thing back in the 50s and 60s, like a roadside attraction. I thought it was going to be super cheesy with just lame souvenirs but they actually have some good quality stuff including some local mushroom teas, goat milk lotions, a wide selection of moccasins and even some nice sterling silver jewelry. Also some geodes and interesting garnets. I'd definitely stop in here again. read more

Wifey and I were heading down Rt 20 after leaving Cooperstown and headed towards Howe Caverns when we stumbled across The Tepee and, more importantly, Tepee Pete's Chow Wagon. Wifey and I needed lunch so this was the place to have it. As a hot dog guy I was a little skeptical, but we ordered two chili dogs and a 'Blitz' which is chili (I chose the Ommegang beer chili), kraut and grilled onions. We also ordered fries and a couple sodas. Pete uses Sabrett all-beef dogs and grills them to order and the fries are hand cut potato wedges. So, if you're a hot dog guy, and anywhere close you NEED to stop here. The homemade chili is a grand slam! Made with beef, black and pinto beans and there was even some corn, it might actually be the best chili dog chili I've ever had. As for the rest of the stop, the Portajohn was clean and well stocked and The Tepee itself is a really cool local (REALLY local) gift and souvenir shop. I would 100% come here again read more

The Tepee is located on US Highway 20 past the intersection of State Hwy 28 and before Cherry Valley. It was founded by fellow from Westchester. He probably visited the Tepee on the Vermont, MA border and thought it would be great for NY to have one. At one time there were many tepee-type places in the Northeast, but alas, treasure our Tepee on 20. The creator of our Tepee has 3 children. When he passed, he left the Tepee to his children. Basically, our Tepee sold primarily Native American goods and things like sandals, and itself. The Tepee was made on land settled by the Tonawanda Seneca Nation. Their father interacted with Ton, the Tribal Chief of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation at the time, and he assisted their father. Interesting the land surrounding the Tepee and for many miles were the site for horrific interactions between the new arrivals and the culture and lifestyle of the Seneca Nations. The French/British and "Indian" relationship were very intense. Unfortunately, many Senecas supported the French (not a good idea," and during the American Revolution (a worse idea,) causing the winning side to ignore the US Constitution in regard to the rights of the Native Americans. Briefly all human rights are available people resident in that region. Enough of the digression. The Tepee was a success until Pete, had a dispute with his his sisters. Pete was a world-famous chili maker, and excellent chef. His frequent absences disappointed the people who traveled to the Tepee for his world-famous chili. Pete left his association with the Tepee and instead travels entering in many chili contests. There should be some frozen chili. Of course, the Tepee and the historical contiguous land should become a national park. The best that can be done now is to ask the owners of the Tepee about its origin and the history it encircles. I urge you to visit the Tepee. It's open all-year and offers the type of tourist things that make it fun to travel around our beautiful State. You never know what you may find there. It's easy to find and actually resembles a metal Tepee with modern heating and cooling.. read more

Based the good reviews here on Yelp we stopped here for lunch. WOW. Seriously impressed with the quality of the chili! TePee Pete let me sample his 7 chilis before choosing; I selected hot so he made sign a waiver ( as a joke, but it was hot). My husband got the mild, but we also liked the seasonal harvest chili. Pete said he makes one with venison meat too. There were tons of other options on the menu, but it is clear chili dogs are the showstoppers. The TePee store is a 1950s era teepee with some of the usual but mostly interesting touristy nicknaks and kitschy gifts. I liked the bead work on the moccasins ( see photos). The view up there is amazing, with vistas of the Mohawk valley and the Adirondacks. On a clear day, the outside eating is a treat. This stop only had a porta potty, but it was one of the best I'd ever seen. With sanitizer, paper towels, a mirror and a huge cake of air deodorizer in the urinal, I didn't mind using this one. TePee Pete is super annoyed that his TePee Chow Wagon reviews are comingled with his sister's store reviews. He is hoping Guy Fieri will have a spot for him on his TV show. I followed suit with other reviewers posting here, since that's how I found out about him and his chili dogs. Coupled with warm, personal greeting we received in the store, the chatty, funny interactions with TePee Pete plus the outstanding, flavorful gourmet hot dogs, this pit stop on our way to Sharon Springs turned into a memorable experience. We will definitely make this a "must-do" next time we are out that way. read more

My nephew took me by The Tepee a couple of years ago and now a trip to Lake Canadarago isn't complete without stopping for hot dogs with chili...at least a stop, sometimes two. The hot dogs are good, they have that snap when you take that first bite. And you'll have to wait a few moments for your order, your dogs are grilled to order. They are not slowly spinning waiting to be bought, your order is grilled to order for you. My dogs are always chili dogs here at The Tepee and that's what they're really known for, their award winning chili. This afternoon you had your choice between mild, hot and vegetarian . Or you could have had what I did; some of the mild mixed with some of the heat...now that was good! The Tepee has more to offer than hot dogs. I know they do, I've seen it on their menu but I couldn't tell you anything about their other food, all I've ever tried was the chili dogs, they're that good! read more

The Tepee is truly a Gem of New York. Sitting On Highway 20 just East of Cherry Valley NY and about 3 Miles West of Sharon Springs NY is one of the most BREATHTAKING SIGHTS in all The State. The Tepee is a Native American Gift Shop as well as specializing in Local Artists and Artisians. You can find children toys that are a from a simpler time, when children still played outside with friends, and had to use their imaginations. To unique an beautiful gifts for all ages and occasions. Be it unique figurines and display pieces, to jewelry and Moccasins, Minitonka Brand so they are really well made. I could spend many pages describing the inside of the Tepee, so I recommend you come and see for yourself. For me though the best part is Pete's Chow Wagon. Pete's serves Hot Dogs, Hamburgers and other Americana food, with his own flair. He has always keeps on hand not just Beef burgers, but for a little more adventure, go with the Buffalo or even The Elk, both are lean and so delicious. But above All Pete's Chilli's are Blue Ribbon Worthy. Be it his Belkalo (Buffalo and Elk Meat), Garlic w/Whole cloves of garlic, His Veggie Chili: will make even complete carnivores will enjoy this. Now for my Personal Favorite, Tepee Peties 7 Pepper Chow Wagon Chili. This is a Nice and Spicy Chili, make sure you sign the book, I have eaten this for several years now. After a while Pete finally told me he did not intend it to be eaten from a bowl, and is intended as a toping for hot dogs, hamburgers or ChaWhaPa's. Yes that is a made up word for a wonderful creation of culinary gluttony and delight. A ChaWhaPa is a fried dough topped with your choice of Chili, your choice of cheese, 2 over medium eggs. This is intended to be eaten like a large taco. Make sure to eat over the plate and get napkins. I will be trying his Ultimate ChaWhaPa soon, everything above plus mushrooms, peppers, onions, Bacon, an extra egg and tater tots. Pete recommends 2 people for this beast. read more

After driving by a dozen times, decided to stop by for a bite to eat. Ordered chili dogs and fries and was encouraged to go inside the teepee and browse. What an interesting selection of merchandise... loved it! We ate and must say, the chili was outstanding! If you want something different, try the chili with apples and cranberries. Fun to go back in time to the days of a good road trip stop on historic US 20. We stopped for lunch which is cooked outside the Teepee gift shop in a converted RV trailer. Food was great. Try the special chili if you like spice. The owner's extended family was enjoying lunch while we were there. Very friendly and told us about the area and the history of the Teepee. The Teepee comes up quick if you are traveling west. Make a U-turn for good "food truck" fare. The view of the valley is spectacular too. read more

Awesome!!! We had passed this place and then when I read the reviews we went back - Had the medium chili and it had the perfect kick. Fiancé had the hot and loved it but he has a high tolerance for hot goods. While we were there we met a couple that drove an hour to get the chili. The lady had a large hot and loved it and the husband had the venison chili and he said it was his favorite - they were repeat customers. Cheeseburger and fries very good as well. Pete the owner was very friendly and his sister as well that owns the gift shop. Lots of unique lovely items. So glad we went!! Have enough leftovers for chili for lunch tomorrow - read more

This shop should be on the National Register of Historic Places! It has been in the same spot F-O-R-E-V-E-R. I remember driving up to Syracuse from Hartford to visit Grandma's farm 45 years ago and looking forward to seeing the vista from this scenic valley overlook of cultivated fields and woodlands as far as the eye could see. On a clear day, one can spot mountains all the way in New Hampshire. Pete and his sister have a great set up here with him running the food concession outside and her running the gift shop full of fun finds. A lot of items have an Indian theme, however I my husband was able to buy a medieval (Mountain Brand) tee for the upcoming fall Renaissance festivals. Mineral and Rock specimens are another specialty. I loved the cabinet full of antique genuine tepee souvenirs and had to smell all the soaps and candles and incense and lotions they had for sale. A refreshing stop along Route 20 that shouldn't be missed. I regret now that we didn't try some of Pete's food having read the reviews here, but when we stopped, it wasn't mealtime for us and we weren't hungry. Next time we'll have to try his fare. This place is amazing! We literally stumbled across it on a sunday drive last winter and were lucky enough to run into Pete. He told us to come back in the spring when they open and we have several times. The view is outstanding and the teepee is just a beautiful step back in time. Great warm season place along a scenic overlook on Rt 20 near Cherry Valley. The Tee Pee is a wonderful kitchy sheet metal tee pee from the 1950s with cool merchandise. The Chuck Wagon outside has local buffalo and elk burgers and chili. The chilis are awesome- some quite spicey and hot. The burgers are wonderful. Sit at the picnic tables, look at the view and use a lot of napkins eating here. Super for families, friends or just yourself. Moderate prices for fresh food. read more

You haven't had good chili until you try Teepee Pete's Chili. It burns but.... you can still taste that it's good chili. (Or try the Elk or Buffalo Burger. ) My favorite on a hot summer day after a nice long motorcycle ride is to stop, have a hot dog and his great French fries, sit at one of the picnic tables, and enjoy one of the best views anywhere. The gift shop was closed when we arrived, but Pete was willing to stay open late so that we could try his food. I am glad that he did because it was really good. His chili is very good.
