It's enormous -- the kind of enormous where you half-expect to find a lost civilization in the camping section. And somehow they have everything. Outdoor gear, bike shop, rentals for basically any activity you've ever considered trying drunk at a party, lift ticket discounts... if it involves fresh air and mild suffering, they've got you covered. Now let's talk about the Basementeers membership, because it deserves its own paragraph. Twenty-five dollars. Once. For life. That's not a typo. For the price of a mediocre cocktail, you get 10% off forever, plus occasional 20% Friends & Family discounts. I've made worse financial decisions in the same afternoon. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and seemingly immune to the judgment you'd deserve for asking "what's the difference between hiking and walking." Basically: go. Join. Buy things. Touch grass -- they sell gear for that too.

He was extremely knowledgeable, displayed a high level of expertise with confidence, not arrogance. I really appreciated that. I came in with a problem and was immediately provided and explained options, quoted a more than fair rate and didn't feel haggled or hassled on cheesy up sale techniques. Because of his likability and competency, I took his advice and added a fresh wax. In closing, it's a rarity these days to get high quality service, from people that take pride in their job. Dominick is cut from a different cloth. Sports Basement Corporate, your Ski shop just earned a customer for life and you should promote or at least give a healthy raise to Dominick for the rock star service! Thanks Stephen Watson

I ended up asking the owner for some advice on how to get started in the local waters. He was incredibly helpful- not only did he recommend a specific spoon spinner, but he even took the time to show me the best way to cast and retrieve it for the river. This place is definitely a local gem. Whether you're a regular or you're like me and somehow managed to leave your tackle box at home, it's a great spot to drop by. Great service and even better advice!

Kayaking the Russian River is something I've had on my to do list for years. This summer, with the…read moreriver still flowing nicely well in to July, I decided to finally make it a priority for a weekend adventure. In reading, Yelp and other reviews all signs indicated that King's was THE place. I had stopped in the shop during other trips to Guerneville to check out their outdoor clothing and accessories, so I was familiar with them. I had decided on what's labeled as their Trip #2 on the website which is a 5 mile kayak (self guided) from Johnson's Beach to Monte Rio. I called and reserved a tandem kayak about 4 days in advance and was given a few options of a start time. I choose 11 am since we were driving in from the East Bay and didn't want to leave home too early. They were super friendly and helpful when calling and made sure we understood the trip details and were booking the right package for our skills and needs. A credit card number is required to hold your reservation. We arrived closer to 10::30 and luckily found parking on the street right near the shop-I was worried about that on a summer Sunday but maybe getting there earlier helped. The girl who checked us in was super knowledgeable and made sure she showed us a map of our route, which includes a small section where you need to get out of your kayak and walk it about 200 yards around the dam to circumvent it and then launch back in. We were provided a dry bag, paddles, kayak and life vests. They have you walk a few blocks down to Johnson's Beach and they meet you there with the kayak. This year, after the 2023 rainy winter, the river was flowing nicely-we had a mostly smooth paddle down the river. For quite a while we had quite a bit of solitude and it was so peaceful and lovely with the river and redwoods. Things got a little busier towards Monte Rio beach and downright chaotic as we had to navigate hoards of people swimming with no situational awareness of our kayak and others coming through. It was a relief to get past it and get our kayak to the boat launch. You call Kings as you approach Monte Rio to schedule your pick up. They were there for us to shuttle us back to Guerneville within 5 minutes of us leaving the water. I had the most wonderful day out on the river. We saw lots of water birds and turtles and for the most part it was a very serene trip, Highly recommend Kings and would 100% use them again. They know the river well and gave us advice about certain areas and seem like they truly love what they do!

I came in needing a full "head-to-toe" setup for winter sports, and Brandon provided the kind of elite, professional service that is rare to find. His technical knowledge of snowboards, skis, and bindings is extensive; he doesn't just know the specs, he understands how the gear actually performs on the mountain. What really stood out, however, was his approach. He took the time to listen to my specific needs and concerns, making me feel both seen and heard throughout the process. I walked out (after 2.5 hours that flew by) not only with the right equipment but with the confidence I needed to get back out there. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, I'd recommend Brandon C. to anyone. He's a true professional who knows his craft inside and out. Thank you again Brandon C and SB and NIN.

The reality is that rude, dismissive customer service drives people away. Customers can tolerate mistakes. Customers can tolerate policy issues. What people do not tolerate is being treated as though they are an inconvenience when they walk into a store prepared to spend money. I spent nearly 50 minutes looking for replacement shoes after following the instructions given by your staff. I returned to the counter and was met with an attitude that made the entire experience feel unnecessarily unpleasant. That kind of interaction leaves a much bigger impression than any return policy ever could. You should seriously consider the long-term impact of allowing employees to interact with customers in this way. One negative interaction may seem small in the moment, but over time those experiences absolutely cost business. People remember how they were treated. I can say with certainty that experiences like this make customers question where they want to spend their money in the future. If I have to choose between dealing with rude and dismissive interactions versus shopping somewhere that values customer service and basic professionalism, the decision becomes very easy. I think your management team should understand that poor customer interactions do not simply create one unhappy customer -- they create people who share those experiences with family, friends, coworkers, and others making decisions about where to shop.

They have a wide selection of outdoor gear for camping, climbing, and the snow. I placed an order online and the instructions for pickup were extremely clear and well thought out. I came during non-staffed hours and didn't have any issue or difficulty picking up my items. We parked in the Union Square parking garage (2 blocks away) to pick up the gear and double parked across the street in a white pick up zone to drop off the gear. Although it's in downtown, it's in a pretty empty street so there's no rush or bad traffic in this specific area. If you are going to double park though, please do not leave your car unattended. I felt fairly safe in the area but you can never be too sure, always have someone sitting inside! The gear itself was pretty quality and we really appreciated how there was an option to try on one size up and down. The pricing was also much cheaper than Sports Basement or any other rental area. Being able to return the gear at any hour of the day was also super useful. It's a no brainer, rent your gear from here! Every aspect about this business is better than any other one you can rent from :)

Awesome, super convenient service, great concept…read more 1) COVID-safe. Pick up and drop off was self-serve from the empty store, so didn't have to worry about COVID exposure. 2) Know exactly what gear you are getting online. You can specify your weight / height etc. so they match you with the right gear. Also, clear information about what brand / model of gear they stock, so you know what you are getting. 3) Cheap! Prices are better than REI / Sports Basements. 4) 24 hour availability = way more convenient & also cheaper! At other rental places, I have to stop by the day before to pick up the gear and again the day after my trip to drop off the gear, because they aren't open at 7am when I'm leaving for the mountains and are closed at 7pm when I get back. That means I have to pay for 2 extra rental days and make two separate trips to a rental place. This location is on my way to a lot of places, so can just grab and go right before the trip and drop off on the way back. Would love if they opened a location on the way to Stanislaus / Yosemite / Sequoia, maybe San Mateo, Hayward or Tracy. 5) High quality gear. They've clearly thought a lot about what gear to stock, everything is durable and top of the line. Love that they differentiate between camping & backpacking gear as weight makes a big difference.

I love both backpacking and car camping and have rented a lot of gear from different outfitters (REI, Sports Basement, etc) -- you can't find this quality of gear for rent anywhere else nor can you match the ease of delivery. The kit was incredibly well-selected from the warm, plush luxury Thermarest sleeping pads to the solar lanterns that provide an excellent evening ambience. As others have noted, make sure to arrange your own fuel (depending on your kit's particular stove). Even though I own a lot of my own gear, I definitely plan on using Camp Kit in the future for augmenting my own kit or when gear-less friends need supplies!

You can tell the gear is high quality and some of it appeared to be brand new! It had everything we needed and we were able to add on extras also. They even threw extra stuff in when i told them we had a toddler. The website is easy to use and is very nice/professional. Ofcourse i waited to the last minute to worry about camp gear and was able to order and get the camp gear like 2 days before we left. They dropped it off at our house in Oakland the night before we left and picked it up at our house the day after we got back. I looked into two other camp rentals here in the bay area. One of them you had to go in to reserve and pick up in either Berkeley or San Rafael and the other only delivered in SF. Camp Kit was a bit more expensive than both of the others but I think for the quality of gear, ease of ordering, delivery/pick up and great customer service it was well worth it. The only thing i would say is i wish they offered the propane for the stove as an add on, so i didn't have to go get it, lol. So we left our extra one in the kit for the next person. Another thing is now after using all this nice equipment and getting to test it out. we know what we may want to purchase in the future and what we may not. We really liked the little stove, so convenient and easy to use! Also, they gave koozies for us to keep in the kit! can't ever have too many of those.
