Having spent a career as a public school teacher, I was leery of Catholic schools (would they be…read morerigorous enough, are the teachers trained well, will they have a good science program, are they tech-savvy...) until my son was so unhappy in his highly-ranked, but larger, public elementary school that I was fearful for his well-being. This school heard my concerns as a parent, welcomed him with open arms, lent us uniforms when we needed them, and gave him access to the amazing science curriculum. The teachers are amazing, warm, intelligent, and thorough. The students there are just so kind. They use state of the art tech, post assignments online, communicate well and LOVE the kids. The smaller setting is amazing. He loves going to mass during school. He is at peace. The other parents went out of their way to invite us over, make sure we were in the loop about school events, emailed us...Like a welcome wagon. One child was out when my kid started school on a family vacation and brought him home a "welcome to school" souvenir. My child is learning a lot, but more importantly, he loves school again. This principal is a great leader. Don't hesitate. Wish I had enrolled my child sooner.

It's a little sad that a very small number of parents have taken to Yelp to air grievances, because in our experience the vast majority of parents - and students - are thrilled to be at the school. The idea that CHDS does not take bullying seriously is just plain wrong, as is the idea that the school does not listen to feedback. The truth is, the Head of School is wonderfully accessible (we know this from personal experience) and has a reputation as one of DC's best and longest-serving educational leaders. The teachers are devoted, respond quickly to questions and concerns, and focus on student-centered, inquiry-based learning. The parents get along with each other and build friendships outside of class. The field trips teach soft skills and critical thinking far more rapidly than everyday classroom learning. The building is beautiful, the student body is diverse, the faculty turnover is low, the communication robust, and the destinations for graduates impressive. I used to receive email updates for when the track was opened or closed, but I probably no longer use that email address, so I'm out of the loop. I used to come here with a running group to do track speed work and speed drills. Another time I used to come regularly was for a weekly boot camp group that met where during designated week nights. Nice 8-lane track. Standard 4x around is mile. There are bleechers so some people run up and down those as well. Public restrooms are available and in working order when I was here and easy to find at the entrance. I am not certain where parking is. I lucked up and usually find parking on the surrounding neighborhood streets. I am sure there is a school parking lot around the corner or something. Plenty of people out for brisk walks and jogging around the track and others were playing American football and soccer in the middle of the field. Highly recommend!

Very impressive! Above the whole room is a large white dome. It starts out lit up like daytime but then the sun sets, the light fades, and the stars appear. The show, The Night Sky and our place in the Cosmos, was approximately 45 minutes. It was very informative, fun and impressive all wrapped in one. We went on a narrated journey through the cosmos with stars, constellations, nebulas, planets, solar systems, and galaxies. Our guide and narrator, Ms. Stewart (the astronomy teacher), did a fantastic job; she made it fun & you just wanted to her keep going so you could keep learning & soaking up as much as you could.
