Yum all around. If you're staying at the Alander this is a must try! This beautifully decorated restaurant is attached to the hotel and has the same attentive staff as the hotel. Everyone was absolutely fabulous. We took advantage of tomato season and got their delicious tomato salad and ricotta toast as appetizers. Both were sinfully tasty and you could taste to farm to table aspect. I got the lobster roll and my boyfriend got the steak. Both fantastic. Everything really tasted fresh and natural. All of the above. Ordered the short ribs and it was just a big chunk of meat sitting in a bowl of watery polenta mixed with so many different things. And I've never had short ribs that was like a block of meat cold in the center like it just came out of the refrigerator. A typical restaurant where whoever is creating these dishes thinks that more equals more when it's less equals more. After just returning from London, and Bologna, this was such a disappointment. I wish chefs would understand that delicious cuisine is best with minimal ingredients that are incredibly fresh. read more

We have eaten at North Star a few times as we live locally. Most recently we loved the mid week spring specials and hope they return next year. This past weekend he hosted 23 people to a sit down dinner in their barn behind the main building. We had a great event. Reid, an owner was extraordinarily accommodating in every way. He gave us plenty of options for our guests. They accommodated a young child and a gluten fee guest. The room was set up perfectly. Rob the Chef did an incredible job and Kimberly was a great server. The food all came out at once (a sign they know what they are doing). They even made us a custom cake. I would HIGHLY recommend the restaurant and having an event in the cozy barn. read more

The homemade chips were better than the lobster roll. The cut on the prime rib was off. The dessert was gelato in name only. The cheesecake crust was not memorable. The bread that came after the starter to the table was better than the starter. Any one of those is easy to ignore. Combined is a bit harder. Plenty of staff. We were off hiking on a trail all morning. You know how there's like no service here anywhere? Yeah well when we were done we couldn't get maps working which made it hard to know where to go. So I headed down 22 south. We started thinking we were seeing absolutely nothing that looked familiar. Suddenly maps sprang to life and said "hey idiot with no sense of direction, it's north not south." So then I needed a place the turn around in. Luckily up ahead was the Alander. A quaint little hotel. I pulled in and the person doing the gardening looked up. During our quick pull through my wife noticed they had a restaurant. We went online and took a peak. The place sounded pretty interesting. We booked it for later that night. We arrive and wouldn't ya know we are greeted by the person that was gardening. It's the owner! He was pretty cool and we chatted for a bit. Kind of made us wish we had stayed there instead of an Air BnB. Most important thing to us is bringing the dog. He seemed to love dogs. Our server brought us homemade Ciabatta bread with a rosemary honey butter. So good. So we started with lobster bisque for her and New England clam chowder for me. Hers had real prices of lobster in it. Large ones. I tried it and it was awesome. Mine was great too. My wife got the short rib. I tried some and it was fantastic. That is not what I'm here to tell you about today though. I got the pan seared salmon on couscous. It was the most perfectly cooked salmon I think I've ever had. Crispy on top but not burned or overcooked in any way. Normally when you get any salmon the can't get the edges crispy and keep the center soft. It gets overdone and very flaky. Not here. Believe me when I say this was one of the best salmon dishes I've had, and I eat a lot of it. I was too full for desert. My wife on the other hand got the white chocolate Crème brûlée. I of course had some even though I was stuffed. It was delicious. We love trying new places but we loved our dinner so much we've decided to go back for brunch tomorrow. This is like Christmas Eve. What a wonderful surprise! This was the first time my friends and I visited the North Star and, WOW, are we happy we did. We went there for a Christmas celebration, and the dining room and bar were beautifully decorated and very cozy. The minute we walked through the door the staff made us feel at home and their attention, care and kindness continued the entire evening. They made us feel so special. And then there's the food! We took advantage of their prime rib special and it was cooked to perfection. It was beautifully presented, family style for two, and it looked just like the way my mother would have done for special guests at the holidays. I was fabulous! Just scrolling around for things to do in Copake, NY for the 4th of July. Too lazy to have guests over and just 3 of us. I see that The North Star in the Alander ( formerly the Johanna ) is having a backyard barbecue buffet with music and games from 1pm to 7pm. We bought tickets and had a wonderful time. The outdoor patio was nicely situated with some cover from Sun and/or rain. They had ribs, hit dogs. sliders, chicken sausage, veggie burgers. Sides were potato salad,cole slaw, pasta salad, corn, salads, watermelon. Everything was just right for 4th of July. The ribs were really good. We played corn hole to burn off calories. Lots of fun. Will have to check out the regular restaurant menu on another trip. Enjoyed the live music a lot. read more

Wonderfully delicious, fresh foods and great service with happy vibes for a perfect summer dinner. We started/shared with melon and cucumber salad + feta, lamb kefta skewers with tzatziki (yum!) and for mains the Ribeye sirloin with frites (flintstone size!), summer corn and blue crab in agnolotti pasta, chicken Milanese... limoncello gelato and chocolate torte for desert. Oh dear. I want to support local businesses, but cannot recommend North Star, at least right now. On the plus side, the ambience and service were great. I like what they've done to the 1950's room. On the minus side, the food and drink were incredibly plain. Just no creativity at all. I go to restaurants to eat things I don't eat at home. My cocktail (the leaf peeper) was Rye whiskey and maple syrup -- nothing interesting/unusual/creative. Appetiser was half a head of deep fried cauliflower. No discernable sauce. No other flavoring. The salmon also has no sauce or seasonings; the fried brussels sprouts on the side were also plain, with literally no other ingredients, ditto the corn puree. If I want plain cauliflower, salmon and brussels sprouts, I can and do make them at home. All in all, a disappointing meal. As others have mentioned, many other local restaurants are better. Until the food improves I won't be back. read more

The North Star restaurant together with the Alander seens to have struck an unbeatable combination of food and hospitality. The Alander Inn has warm and very comfortable rooms and we needed a good nights sleep away from the familiar. Combining rustic and modern conveniences it really checks every box. The North Star restaurant is a wonderul restaurant. Superb, inviting dining room and a great menu make it easy to provide you with a varied, delicious dinner. Super fried calamari and caesar salad for instance. Tasty Steelhead dish and Shrimp Picata cured us! Beautiful bar with carefully prepared cocktails rounds out the evening. Our first time here, but we will definitely return! Dinner out on Valentine's Day proved to be a delicious, relaxing and completely enjoyable experience. Each course was beautifully presented and very tasty. The duck was perfectly prepared as was the short rib selection. Jason and Reed did an excellent job in creating a warm, comfortable environment with obvious attention to the details. Lucky for me , North Star extended their October happy hour specials into November ! I had to go in for the oysters , also ordered some wings too . I walked in and sat at the bar , plenty of room and was surprised there was no crowd , of course not knowing they extended the happy hour special ,I hit the jackpot ! Oysters were fresh and even more delicious with their mignonette sauce added ! Wings that you can't go wrong with ! One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. And great truffle fries to go with it. My date had the roasted eggplant and the melon salad which I also tried - both were great. Pricier than I'd hope for, but honestly, nearly every restaurant in this area is pretty insane in terms of prices so I can't say that came as a surprise...at least it was actually good and they're clearly using quality ingredients. The outdoor patio is also such a lovely space to have a meal as the sun is going down. Really enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere so I'd say even though the price tag was a touch high I thought it was well worth it and I'll definitely be back. My husband and I dined at North Star on a Saturday evening during our stay at The Alander. We both ordered The Waterslide cocktail, which was refreshing but a bit too sweet and weak, and it didn't taste like fresh ingredients (watermelon) were used. We also ordered the Sweet Corn Agnolotti ($26), which turned out to be a huge disappointment. The menu described it as "stuffed pasta, blue crab, sweet peppers, corn veloute," but the pasta wasn't stuffed, there was almost no crab (just a few small shells), and it was topped with raw red and green peppers and green onion. The sauce was pasty, gummy, and thick, and the presentation looked unappetizing. For dessert, we got a piece of flourless chocolate cake and two glasses of wine to go. The cake was fine, but nothing special. Overall, the food was disappointing, especially considering the cost. We chose to dine here not just because we were staying at the property, but also because the reviews were good. Maybe it was just an off night? read more

Kudos to the photographer who made the North Star Restaurant look so elegant and appealing online. The in-person experience didn't quite measure up to the pictures. Surprisingly, the space was sort of shabby and stuffy, like a roadside diner, with crying toddlers at the next table. Nothing wrong with that, just not what was expected. Definitely no candles on the table! Simple requests (like milk for coffee or a side salad) were inexplicably unavailable. But on the plus side, our server was cheerful, attentive and eager to please, so no complaints about that. The food was decent, if a little pricey. Hamburger was good, "corn ribs" a mess to eat but very tasty, though the person in our party with food restrictions had a hard time and was initially served a dish with an allergic ingredient (restaurant exchanged for another dish). Food was all served in a timely manner and portions were sufficient. So all in all, not a bad evening and--because we're close by-- maybe worth a second try sometime. read more

We wanted to try this new restaurant last weekend and it did not disappoint. The decor is farmhouse casual and the owners were welcoming. I had the salmon which was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. The accompanying couscous was delicious. This is a great addition to the area. read more

All this at prices that match the better restaurants within a 15 minute drive. Northstar will need to up its game to be worthy of a second visit. At the moment, that will be a steep climb. read more

The food needs serious improvement. Salad with pear and feta, dressing needs more flavor and dressing. Scallops (Japanese) $38 overcooked with under and over cooked risotto. Sauce unknown. Chicken $32 crisp and then bathed in sauce. Huh? Portion size way too small for the $. Our dining companions has snapper which they liked though the sauce was meh! The ambiance was like Mom's, rather country and very loud. They did have cloth napkins! The waitress didn't know how to pour wine. We were happy to leave. Go elsewhere. read more

The food preparations were good. Service was NOT good. Received our bottle of wine after everyone had finished their dinner. We tried a few of their "signature" cocktails and did not care for 2 of them. Let our server that after 2 sips they weren't palatable and were shocked to see them on our bill! When discussing this with management, these items were NOT removed. Our advice to Management...if you are going to charge extremely high prices, make it worthwhile as a dining experience. To charge for bread...3 small pieces for a table of 4! Also...train your wait staff to have judgement with regard to timing of service, etc. You notice that I haven't mentioned the food. It was good....not great...but good. I question some of the Yelp reviews , because I had the same experience when I dined here in March. We are disappointed because we dine out at least once a week and were looking forward to a new restaurant to patronize. We like to promote and support new businesses. The food was delicious and I loved the ribeye medium. Unfortunately, the "manager" has much to learn about customer service. For a party of 3 they sat us uncomfortably at a table for 2, and the third person was in front of a fan cooling the whole room. There was barely room for our plates. The "manager " said he removed the terrarium from the table to make better room for 3 people. It was also next to the door to the patio, which constantly opened and closed any time patrons/staff went outside. There was an open table for 4 the whole time we were there and they never offered to move us. They said we should have "asked" to have moved. I never leave reviews, am very patient with customer service almost always. Would never go back highly disappointed. Will not be going back. read more

We gathered 13 family members for my parents' 55th anniversary dinner at North Star last week. Everything was wonderful! The staff greeted us with smiles; our table was set and lovely; the decor has a hip, modern vibe; the service was attentive and friendly and the food was delish! The oysters were so fresh and amazing. Several of us feasted on the paella for two. The chicken Milanese was skillfully prepared. And the steak looked fit for a king -or queen! We'd coordinated beforehand with the manager, Ann (who is lovely and responsive), to prepare a cake which delighted my parents. All in, the North Star delivered for our family - we couldn't have been more pleased and the evening was happy and memorable. It's a gem we'd love to return to! read more

My husband and I have been waiting for the perfect local restaurant in Columbia County for a long time. We believe we found it tonight at NORTH STAR, which opened about four weeks ago. Everything about it was on the mark. First, Jason and Reid, the proprietors, made us feel welcome in their cozy, tasteful country inn. The menu, although somewhat limited, had enough to choose from. The bread with honey sage butter went well with the wine. Cauliflower with tahini dressing was a bountiful appetizer. The duck was sublime, the salmon perfectly cooked. We shared the flourless chocolate cake with ice-cream and homemade whipped cream, another winner. Portions were generous, prices reasonable. As everything is locally sourced and made in-house, I am already looking forward to trying the changing menu as the seasons change. Jason and Reid - welcome to the neighborhood! read more

Exceptional place, so happy it's here. There are good restaurants in our area, many suffered due to COVID shortages. This is our first time visiting and we will be back. Like any new place, they are working it out, only dinner, no specials, I'd rather do less and do it right. They do, wonderful service, great bartender and terrific chef. Disappointing to say the least. I am a local so was thrilled to hear that North Star had a new chef. It had been bad for so long. However, the food was terrible. First off, we went at 6pm on a Saturday night and they were out of many dishes and when the menu is limited to begin with.... The excuse was that they had had a big party the night before. Well, then don't take any new diners. One of us had the calamari and the burger which were decent. One had the vegetarian Confit Byaldi which is listed as "layered slow roasted market vegetables". In actuality it was zucchini with tomato sauce. I kid you not, that's it. One had the pasta which was "interesting" but the portion was tiny for 26 bucks. I had the chicken which was ineditable. My daughter eagerly asked how it was when she got home from Montreal in which I replied, "Ask Joker (my dog) because that is who ate it." The only desert they had was Blueberry cobbler and "maybe ice cream but they weren't sure." Maybe it was an off night but for the money we spent, honestly, I am angry. The service was great which is why I gave it two stars. Otherwise, save your money and your stomach. read more
