We ended up having to spend about 10 minutes driving to another spot, where the waves were still very small. The lesson also consistently ended almost 10 minutes early to take photos, even though we never requested or asked for photos. I would much rather have that time used for actual instruction. More importantly, I did not feel that the instructor was paying close attention to the student. He often looked away from the student and seemed more focused on relaxing and looking down into the ocean rather than actively watching and teaching. There was also very little constructive instruction once we were in the water. Overall, the experience did not feel professional or worth the money. I would not recommend this surf lesson to others.

Everything we needed was provided, so all we had to do was show up ready to learn. Lawrence gave us clear, easy-to-follow instructions that made us feel comfortable and confident in the water. We caught a ton of waves, and Lawrence was incredibly patient and encouraging throughout the lesson. He even helped my fiancée paddle out since she's much smaller, which made a huge difference and showed how attentive he is to each student's individual needs. We had so much fun and can't wait to come back for another lesson with Lawrence and the North Shore Oahu Surf School. Highly recommend!

We had done a…read morelesson at a different beach with a different school when we first got to Oahu and our daughter (6yo) was a little intimidated by the experience. She kept asking to give it another shot, so I reached out to North Shore Surf Girls and they were so understanding and accommodating. From the very first minute of the lesson, I knew it was going to be a great experience. Amy offered really clear, gentle instruction and had my daughter up to her feet on the first wave. Lawrence was also super great with our son (who is only 3) and both kids were out there catching waves for the full hour having a blast. This was a 10/10 experience and I would highly recommend them as teachers, especially if you have young kids and are in need of a tandem lesson.

My boyfriend and I wanted to take a surf lesson on the famed North Shore (and also because we did…read morenot want to learn how to surf in the hustle and bustle of Waikiki). We found Island Style Surf School with the most competitive pricing for a semi-private lesson and with the most positive reviews. We decided kind of last minute so we did not call Sergio until this morning around 7am. We wanted to do a lesson the same morning or early afternoon. Although Sergio was unavailable, he was able to accommodate us with another instructor. Sergio was very responsive to our messages and kept us in the loop. Since it was so last minute, he had to call around to see if any of his instructors was free to teach. We ended up meeting our instructor, Guto at the Haleiwa Beach House restaurant and driving a few miles to Chun's Reef. From the moment we met him, Guto was an absolute delight to work with. He was so enthusiastic and friendly, not to mention funny! He made us feel completely at ease and answered all of our questions. We got to know him a bit and he is really a genuinely great guy. He was also very thorough with safety and made sure that we understood what was safe and what wasn't. He also kept us safe from other beginner surfers and was always very aware of our surroundings. We were with him for 2 hours and to my surprise, I caught quite a few waves (at least 5-6) over the course of my time in the water without falling! My boyfriend was also able to catch quite a few waves. I really cannot emphasize enough how great of an instructor Guto was. We really enjoyed our time with him and our money could not have been better spent. Being able to have such a small ratio of student:instructor was a huge plus as well. If you're looking for some great people to learn how to surf from, I can not recommend Sergio and his company enough. We happened to meet Shayden & Danielle out on a hike on the North Shore. After talking for a bit he told us that he has a surf school and would be able to take my kiddos out and that he would be competing in a "little" surf contest later that week. Come to find out, it was Volcom's Pipe Pro. He was one of the most humble and kind souls and my kids were naturally drawn to him. His simple and effective teaching skills gave them confidence before even getting in the water. They both caught their first wave and my 6 year old is now hooked and my cautious 5 year old is excited to get back out there with Shayden. My sister and I "tagged" along on the lesson and even managed to shred! To say it was a successful lesson is an understatement. It was so much fun and most of all Shayden and Danielle were coaching all of us and cheering us on the whole time. He covered the basics of paddling and standing and out they went. They shared a board for two hours. He had my daughter up on the board in no time. Great instructor with a lot of patience and knowledge. My daughter enjoyed it so much we booked again for a second day. I really wish Drake would have been there for her. However, he did tell me he would probably not be available. When we return to the North Shore, we would definitely do a week surf camp with Drake. My daughter loved him as he inspired the love of surfing in her. A good first instructor can make or break your kids desire to surf. Thank you!!! Book the early lesson at 8am as it gets crowded in the North Shore as the day progresses.
