Sicilian Canoli ($3.50) Large size. Was worth waiting for 15 min.
    Chloe O.

Since 1973 with nonna, Lucia(Lucy). Painfully slow service though. But their Sicilian Canoli with homemade ricotta cheese filling (large-$3.50)was worth waiting for! Cannoli shell was super crispy because they only add filling once ordered. Filling was so heavenly, not too sweet and creamy/rich enough. I wanted to have another one but saved for later on. It was like 5-6 hours later and it got all soggy. So eat right away!!! I thought I knew most of Italian sweets and I have been missing this in my life.. all this time! Iris or Inis con Ricotta. This humongous fried doughnut filled so much with their housemade ricotta cheese and choco chips, dusted with breadcrumbs and sugar. I dropped by again a few days later to try their lasagna and told Lucia how great her inis(iris) was. She said it was only available on Saturdays. Then she went "Can you imagine if we had that everyday?" Also their housemade ricotta ($6.50) was warm and fresh when I bought it. I also tried their croissant, lasagna($8 inc. tax) and cookies. I was not crazy about these items.

North Pole Bakery has the #1 best cannoli in Toronto, according to celebrity Chef Rob Gentile. Authentic Italian food with a rotating daily menu of offerings, including lasagna, gnocchi, eggplant parmigiana and more. I tried a slice of pepperoni pizza, it had a nice crunchy crust and good quality pepperoni. Spoke to the friendliest lady named Lucia who has been running the place for decades. Great place to pickup sweets for your events, like cookies, pastries, cannolis or biscotti too. They also carry all the Italian cheeses, spices and Sicilian gelato too.

Cannoli ... if you can wait for 25 minutes, it might be worth it. Not for me

This is one of those reviews that are hard to do. Why? cause the food is actually good... the service is unbelievably lacking. Yes it's a small biz that is family run but there is a real disinterest to even serve the 7 people in their bakery. So 4 star for the cannoli... 1 star for the service. For a traditional Italian old school bakery, the name is kinda funny. The family bought the bakery and never changed the name. Don't let the name or the street fool you... it's not some generic Canadian bakery and it's not Greek either. It's as old school Italian as a Vespa here. The spot itself almost feels musty going in... a bit dingy, unkempt, and with a lot of random Italian groceries tossed into the shelves everywhere. The actual bakery area is quite barren... empty empty cases. The real gems are held in the back ... if you can get them. The only reason why I'm here is cause the word of mouth that these cannoli are legit amazing and from a Sicilian recipe. Is it that good? well... lets put it this way, when I was there for the 25 minutes of waiting for someone to come OUT of the back (yes ... you read that right), there was at least 8 other people. 5 other people left throughout the time so 13 people in total were hoping to buy something or pick up cause they paid already. There is an eldery Italian woman cooking at the stove for a gentleman who was picking up some catering dishes paid 2 weeks in advance. He arrived on time and he said they started to cut up the meat when it came in. I left before it was even done cooking on the stove. Also, there were 3 other gentleman in the back... one who didnt speak English but was piping on a cake, 1 man who did nothing and was the son of the woman at the stove, and the husband who was slowly taking care of things in the back. We all made attempts to get their attention ... including walking into the back. No attempt was made to serve until one guy asked for a refund for his pre-paid cannoli. Cannoli - ricotta freshly piped into crisp shells. Lightly sweet and with good crunch. Are they good? Yes. Are they worth the aggravation? No. Still looking for a good Toronto spot for cannoli. I would love to support the local business but not when they actively dont care about their service.

Sanagan's Meat Locker is not just a Butchery, but also a market that showcases many high quality artisanal and local products. If you subscribe to their newsletter, or buy Peter Sanagan's book, you learn so much about what cuts of meat to use with what types of dishes, you discover hidden gems in cuts of meat, not to mention fantastic recipes. I had never heard of flat iron steaks (one of the most tender cuts of beef and very affordable) before Sanagan's and now it's a staple in my household. You are also able to order cuts of meat that are not available at the counter (I ordered duck hearts once) as well as order ahead online. The housemade sauces and charcuterie made by Sanagan's are also delicious. They might be slightly higher priced than supermarket brands, but they're highly worth it. Everyone is also super friendly and helpful at Sanagan's, you just know that they're being treated well there.

They come in mozzerella, provalone, cheddar and a few others. Mendels also does a good deal on stilton. If you buy it off of the wheel it's $5.99/100g But you get two 100g wedges prepaked for $6 flat. Half the price. They used to have $5/lb brie that came in big squares. I would stuff it with fruit and bake it. Cheap and fancy. Global, as far as I know, doesn;t sell large tubs of anchovies, but Mendels does. The giants tubs are $19.99, which I think cuts the price in half of the tiny ones that are $7.99. All in all, the cheapest in the market with a fine selection. The selection isn;t as big as at Global, and there are fewer of the fancy-smancy $14.99/100g seasonal tombes, etc, that you can get from Cheese Magic, but that's fine by me cause I rarely ever get those things. I have been attracted to their prices for cheese, but find that the perceived value is not actual. I suspected this for a while, but only gave in to confirming my suspicions after I acquired a calibrated digital scale. I weighed the cheese at home and found that on my last 3 purchases, I have been short-changed. The first time, I thought it might be a mistake, but this shortfall has been consistent. On my last [now final] visit, I asked for some of their "crumbled feta" and received a tub of cubed feta that was mostly brine. Yes, the whole weight *almost* reflected the quoted price, but paying 88 cents per hundred grams for mostly salty water guarantees that I will be shopping elsewhere from now on.

Perhaps it's because of the colourful display from the moment you step inside, or the seemingly endless list of flavours on the wall staring back at you, or maybe it's because the moment you swing open the door, a friendly storeowner readily appears at your service? Hm... what will I have today? Pro tip: as the store owner would tell you, wait a few min for the ice cream sandwich to thaw before biting in. About 5 min is good and enough time to take Yelp pics. The only unfortunate thing for me is that they're downtown and I'm uptown! Regardless, I always make an effort to drop by whenever I can. Their opening hours are not too friendly though...
