    Coxhina with chicken & cheese
    Amanda B.

I had never had a coxinha before, so we stopped for another quick bite after sharing a pupusa across the street. Coxinha is a kind of Brazilian street food, basically fried chicken balls - dough stuffed with chicken and then fried. The one we got also had cheese in it, and I think it was supposed to be shredded but seemed more like it was ground chicken. I expected the cheese to be more gooey inside, but I didn't really see or taste any all. Still good, though, and I had I not scarfed it down, I would've put on some hot sauce. The shape of the coxinha was more like a pear than a teardrop, but I didn't mind and actually liked the plain, crisper dough at the end tip. Nice little warm snack when it started to rain and get cooler. About $4 for the one that we split. I absolutely would have tried more things had we not just been passing by!

Although Sanagan's get all the fame for being visible and right at the intersection of Kensington and Baldwin, Segovia is also a place for meat but you probably wouldn't know it from their street presence and first impression of their store front. On the west side of Augusta between Baldwin and College is this store but on their sidewalk portion in front of their entrance is a street service type of extra bit... yes that's how I explained it. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with being a butcher either. The first thing I see are such things as empanadas, pastries, churros and things like that. Kensington has so many places that serve these type of food items and Segovia is yet another one that does. While I didn't get any meat (no meat purchased that day) we did pick up a few snacks and let me tell you the grilled cheese empanada is quite filling.

This little deli is tucked in Kensington market & rarely has a wait. I have no idea why besides the fact that most people don't realize they serve cooked food. The sausage I had was great value at $5 and very filling. Tremendous flavour and worth getting if you like to try different types of foods different days. I'd have it again.

Corn mashed with salsa and some sauces.

The empanadas are not as good as the chilean across the street, but the chorizo is amazing and fresh!

Segovia has the best humitas in anywhere I have looked in Toronto. I stack up on the sweet cheese humitas in my fridge all year long.

There wasn't a huge amount of people. And while we missed the Saturday South market it was great to see so many of the vendors with such a lot of really good looking products. We hadn't checked out this vendor before but we were glad we did and we will be doing business with them again. They have a tremendous amount of really nice looking meets everything from steaks to chops to chicken - you name it. In particular I was looking to make a meatloaf and so they had a special on ground steak. 3 pounds for $15. We grabbed it up. And I believe they actually were a little more on the generous side in terms of weight. Fast friendly service and we made up the meatloaf and it was awesome. Totally will be coming back here I saw some really outstanding looking steaks that I think I will pick up next time. So don't be afraid to try this vendor. They have great meat.

Anybody who has any self respect should stay from this horrible establishment. Fuck Delisio's! Don't stand for rudeness.

BUT for the rest of you culinary connoisseurs, drop by this St. Lawrence Market butcher shop to diversify your pallet in unexpected ways! The folks at WhiteHouse offer a large variety of exotic games meats. Their games meats include: venison, buffalo, caribou, Berkshire pork, wild boar, kangaroo, crocodile, musk ox, camel, goat, and rabbit. They also have a variety of birds: pheasant, partridge, duck, quail, cornish hen, guinea fowl, squab and ostrich. You can order your meat in several convenience cuts, including burgers and sausages. I personally tried the crocodile and the kangaroo sliders. The crocodile was the most novel of the two meats for me. The meat's texture was somewhat like a mix between a soft pork and the flakiness of most fish. The flavour also had a somewhat fishy tinge to it, but you should try it yourself for the full experience. On the other hand, the kangaroo meat was much more similar to what you would expect from your typical beef. Its texture is fibrous, and the flavour has a hint of barbecue. I could definitely see myself enjoying kangaroo on a regular basis. (Anyone want to move to Australia???) Drop by WhiteHouse Meats for a new food adventure! But recognize that you'll be paying a premium for the experience. It's not like you're going to find ostriches just outside your backyard.

Sanagan's Meat Locker is not just a Butchery, but also a market that showcases many high quality artisanal and local products. Their meats are always high quality and enhances whatever recipe you are using. There's also an educational aspect to Sanagan's. If you subscribe to their newsletter, or buy Peter Sanagan's book, you learn so much about what cuts of meat to use with what types of dishes, you discover hidden gems in cuts of meat, not to mention fantastic recipes. I had never heard of flat iron steaks (one of the most tender cuts of beef and very affordable) before Sanagan's and now it's a staple in my household. You are also able to order cuts of meat that are not available at the counter (I ordered duck hearts once) as well as order ahead online. The housemade sauces and charcuterie made by Sanagan's are also delicious. They might be slightly higher priced than supermarket brands, but they're highly worth it. Everyone is also super friendly and helpful at Sanagan's, you just know that they're being treated well there.

Oh by the way, did I mention my husband was Italian? He knows knee caps pretty good. Budda boom budda bing. I'm a shopper who should come with a warning sign that reads "You fuck up my meat and I'll fuck up your meat". Witteveen Meats is my go to place for meats when I'm making my Saturday morning grocery run at the SLM. The meat case is absolutely pristine and that is a big selling point for me. Even on the customer side of the glass you'll rarely seem any smudgy finger prints. Meat cleanliness is an important sign and tells me that these are people I want to do business with. It was a frosty Saturday morning when my kindred spirit in meat, Shari M. and I hit up the SLM to stock up on our provisions and meat was one of them. I have been tutoring Shari in the fine art of making Bolognese sauce so she needed her some extra lean ground beef and some lean ground pork. I steered her in the direction of Witteveens which was perfect because it was kitty corner to the table and chairs we had managed to snag while giving some mouth to mouth to an absolutely perfect, juicy and fully loaded back bacon on a bun from the Carousel Bakery. Witteveen Meats is one of the largest, if not, the largest purveyor of meats in the SLM. They sell some beautifully stuff pork loins filled with everything from fresh rosemary to dried fruits. Their French prepped lamb racks are a thing of beauty. Korean short ribs are fucking amazing and only take 3-4 minutes on the 'cue. There is every kind of beef imaginable available on the butcher counter. Price is accordingly scaled....tenderloin, grain fed, Alberta beef, it's all over the place. Yesterday they had strip loins on for 8 bucks a piece. I bought two and turned them in to Beef Strognoff, enough for two meals. I also picked up a fresh air chilled roasting chicken for ten buck which is about to get sodomized with a beer can and strapped to the Weber later today. The best thing about hanging out at Witteveen Meats on a Saturday morning is the chance to have some potty mouth exchanges with Toronto Maple leaf hockey legend and all around bad ass guy, Eddie "Clear the track....here comes" Shack. He had Shari and I just splitting a gut laughing. Meat and laughter together, What a great way to warm up a freezing winter day.

I asked one of the employees if they had any grass fed beef liver, and he said their beef liver was from cows that were grass fed and then topped off with grains to add in some fat. I then asked if he was 100% sure that it was grass fed. He checked with his co-worker who also assured me that it was indeed grass fed. I purchased 1.8 Lbs of liver for $28.62 believing that it was grass fed. Once I returned home, I visited the website of the farm that produces the meat. To my utter disbelief, the farm openly states that their meat is corn-fed. I immediately called Witteveen back and enlightened them on the fact that their meat is NOT grass fed. The responses, as I anticipated were "Oh, we were told it was" and "we didn't know" and "the owner is not in today but you can call back on Monday". Needless to say I retuned the liver to the store and got a full refund. As a goodwill gesture, they offered me free meat to make up for the lie. I politely declined and left the store. I later visited Wittevens website which turned out to be equally misleading. The website suggests that Witteveens is a 5-generation old dutch family run company. It's not. It's owned by a guy named Sainu Kanichirakal - clearly not from Holland. I am ok with the fact that they don't sell grass-fed beef liver (it's very hard to find), but don't BS your customers!
