June 28 travel delays on I-94 caused us to arrive at 2:30, close to the 3 p.m. closing, much later than we had hoped. There was a gentleman waiting to be seated when the hostess or waitress told him rather curtly and that they wouldn't be serving any more today. He left. I felt bad for him. I asked could we just get pie and coffee? I was told yes that pie only or to go was an option. Strongly recommend a sign that says "Serving only pie or selling pie to go at --whatever time'' be placed on the front door. We were seated. A waitress tossed two small coffee cups and waters on the table and disappeared without a greeting. She proceeded to expound upon pie options to a nearby large table. Average tasting coffee cup scarcely larger than an espresso cup not refilled at all. Mom ordered a raspberry sour cream pie and was disappointed. (I think she was flustered and that was one of the last options she heard listed, so chose it). I had a Dutch Apple with free ice cream scoop and was satisfied. Before the bill arrived, I went to check on pies to go and got the last piece of apple lingonberry (what I knew my mom really wanted) and some packaged lefse. Paid for our pies and $2.75 a cup sips of coffee. Wished I had waited for the server's bill which didn't contain a charge for the coffee. The apple lingonberry was TRULY delicious. I truly feel for the staff at this location. I overheard the cashier/wait staff tell a customer they were short staffed Sunday, June 28, 2026. With that said, and the lobby was filled every inch, wall to wall, my recommendation would have been to announce this struggle with their guests as they added their name to the wait list and let them make their own decision whether they stay or go. I opted to stay (BIG MISTAKE). The wait to be seated was easily 40+ minutes and not realizing at the time, if I thought this was bad, I had no idea the food to order to table would be the same or longer. I think there was 1 cook and they were in over their head by the demands coming in. 1 hostess (manager), 1 wait staff working one side of the room, and a 2nd wait staff on the other. No cashier. 2 guys bussing tables, wearing white plastic garbage bags stretched thin like an apron. Gordon Ramsey would have shut the restaurant down! My fiance' ordered Corn Beef and Hash, we needed a magnifying glass to identify IF there was ANY corn beef in this dish. We asked for the check with our meal and were ignored. I ended up leaving cash on the table and walking out. As departing the restaurant I was sure to tell other patrons coming in to turn around and run! We were there for 2-1/2 HOURS! Quaint diner with Norwegian flair! We only stopped for lingonberry jam but got enticed into lunch by the smells. At first glance it's a diner with a pie case but check the menu for some unlikely finds. The Wisconsin Reuben was delicious, loaded with thick corned beef and lots of butter and sauerkraut so you didn't even need the thousand island. I wasn't sure how a Reuben would be without rye but the cranberry wild rice bread was the real star of the sandwich. The corned beef hash was a bit salty but I'll take homemade over the canned stuff any day! I had to try a side of their sausage gravy because my southern roots demand it, and I can say it's a decent attempt with good amount of black pepper and sausage flavor. They have an extensive case of pies which were tempting but we were full from lunch. We ended up loving the bread so much that we took a whole loaf home. Service was friendly which was a relief considering we ended up coming in at 2:20 when they close at 3. Went here on a Sunday for lunch and we were shocked how quickly we were seated. Other times when we've stopped, they've been packed and we've had to wait, so immediate seating was a plus. Our waitress was very friendly and super patient with kids. She quickly got them milk and crayons. She also took all our orders right away and brought out the kid's applesauce. The food took a little while to arrive, but at least they were entertained and got some food in the wait. We ended up ordering the turkey melt on cranberry wild rice bread, the chicken salad wrap, kids chicken tenders, and kids french toast sticks. The melt on the cranberry wild rice bread was by far the best, yet a little greasy. The sauce they give you with it just provides the extra zing that the sandwich needs. The wrap was a little more mayo forward than I like in my chicken salad and pretty messy because of that mixed with the petite diced tomatoes. Most of my wrap ended up falling out and I ate it with a fork. The chicken tenders were standard for a kids meal. The French toast sticks kind of surprised us, as they looked amazing, but actually ended up being kind of greasy, which is not something I've experienced with French toast before. Kind of wondering how they made them. We also had to get some pie for dessert. As they were out of most of the seasonal when we were there, we went with the cherry. It was tasty as all their pies are! I love that it wasn't overly sweet, even with a sugared crust, and they let the sourness of the cherries come through. We made a special trip to purchase lefse and the cranberry wild rice bread. Don't miss taking them home. That bread is fabulous. The soups are okay but very bland. My husband enjoyed his 1/2 turkey sandwich and mashed potatoes. The Cranberry, Turkey and Swiss Melt is really good but some lingonberries in the sandwich would make it perfect. The hashbrowns were crispy and buttery. The letdown was in the pies. They have greatly reduced their pie menu. They also didn't have all of the current choices available. Norske Nook is a hidden gem a little ways off the freeway in Osseo. I've been to most locations, but the original here in Osseo has the best mix of small town charm and unique Norwegian food. The original Norski Nook. It was my husband's birthday and we were traveling so he wanted to stop off and have a piece of pie. We both ordered a 1/2 sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes. I had the Norwegian meatball and hubby had Turkey. We wanted to save room for pie. My husband had the banana cream he said was to die for. I had the pecan which came with me and I had 3 desserts off that one slice of pie. It was delicious! We have been here before and there always seems to be a line. Today we were here at 1:00 on a Friday afternoon and had a short wait. They are only open until 3 pm. Stopped again 6 months later for breakfast. My husband ordered his fav banana cream pie which was served first and he even let me have a couple of bites. It has a thick Graham cracker crust loaded with banana and delicious creme filling. This stop my husband had biscuits and sausage gravy. It was a huge bowl full. I had a taste and it was rich. Tasted good. I had the Norwegian pancakes with lingonberry sauce. It had ample dollops of whipped cream. I didn't even need the maple syrup that was served tabletop. I had a side of bacon which was thick and tasty. I was expecting 2 pieces but there were 4. I had approximately one pancake and 3 pieces of bacon to take out and eat down the road as we have about 2.5 more hours of driving. In this part of Wisconsin, most of the natives are of German or Norwegian stock and Norske Nook caters to the tastes of those cultures. My favorites are the harvest soup, and the rueben on their own homemade cranberry bread. The food is amazing but you have to also have one of their delicious pies. The signboard is full of award-winning selections, and it is a very very long list. Everything is baked fresh daily. My favorite pies include the blueberry crunch, sour cream lingonberry, harvest apple, pumpkin cream cheese, pecan fudge, and the #1 choice, pecan stout. Great pie, but the service and ambience have really gone downhill. Took the family to Norske Nook in Osseo during a road trip across Wisconsin. I had talked the place up for weeks - sharing tales of this location my wife and I have loved and visited for decades. Turns out I had to eat pie - humble pie. It's been 5 years since we've hit the Nook - things have changed. We arrived well before the posted closing time, but after a long wait, we were rudely told we could not be seated and could only order take-away pie. This was done without an apology or a shred of friendliness - almost as though we had forced our way in 20 minutes after close. The wait at least gave us time to look around the location. What was once a bright and friendly establishment now seems dark, faded, and harried. The staff was stressed and angry. The vibe was very unpleasant. We felt sad to see the business in decline. I still want to love the Norske Nook, the pie was good but the reception was rude and cold. Hopefully the owners take steps to get things back on track for this Wisconsin treasure. read more

We asked to move, the waitress asked if there were open tables or booths and the most unfriendly hostess that sat us even told the waitress no when there clearly were open tables and booths. It was disgusting. If they are that HARD UP FOR MONEY then have longer hours or something. I couldn't even eat or drink from the glass of water. That's how disgusting it was. Every year some old friends from Wausau and my family meet up at a campsite just outside of Augusta, WI and so we've had a tradition of stopping by Norske Nook on our way to the site. Norske Nook never disappoints! Imagine that your grandma is / was a great home cook and then decided to open a restaurant and you'll have a pretty good idea of what Norske Nook tastes and feels like. Their food covers a wide range of classic American like foods (cheeseburgers, fries, etc.) and Scandinavian food such as Swedish meatball and Lefse dishes. There is a small dedicated menu of gluten free options, which is important for my daughter and I, as we have Celiac's disease. I had a cheeseburger and hashbrowns, which was a delightful mix of lunch and breakfast and they TOASTED THE BREAD. This was brilliant, as most of the GF buns that I have pretty much just disintegrate when I eat a burger. The star of the show is the pie, by far!!! Norske Nook is well known in Central Wisconsin for their pies and I know this going to be sacrilegious for Minnesotans, but Norske pies may even be better than Betty's Pies... There are so many flavors and I'm kicking myself for forgetting to take pictures of the pie slices, but that's how good they are. They do not last long... For my GF friends, they can make whole GF pies or personal sized pies, but you must give them a 48 hour notice. However, it's totally worth it, as we ordered the chocolate peanut butter pie and it was a massive 13x9 size, for only $41!!! That's great in the GF world... The pie was not stodgy at all, but was perfectly balanced and another advantage of getting the big pie, was we could cut whatever sized slices we wanted. Still probably cut too big a slice, though... :) We've had the joy of being served by Marlene, pretty much every year. She is a local treasure, great at our job, witty and seems to remember us, even though we only make it in once a year. Norske Nook is only a couple of miles west of I-94 at the Osseo exit, so if you find your self in west-central Wisconsin, I HIGHLY recommend you check it out! read more

We got pie to go. I got chocolate cream because no one seems to know what it is in MN. Breakfast was lousy. Corned beef hash was weird. It was ground so fine you could see specks of it. Usually it's chunks. It seemed that salt was added cause it was over powering. I think the cook didn't care or moonlights at the Braille Institute, cause no one could miss over hard eggs when OE was ordered. Basil loved his sausage omelet. It was a nice portion and tasty, esp w the seasoning mix on the table (Pleasoning). The hash browns were a little under cooked- not as crispy as I like but it didn't detract. My my wife's eggs, bacon and potato pancake were good. We were full but got pie to go. We travel between Minneapolis and madison quite often and stop there either to or fro ouof most trips . I am partial to their roast beef sandwich and blueberry pie( although my husband tells me all their pies are excellent ) my husband usually has some kind of wrap and pie. It's often busy and crowded but well worth it . They also sell full pies and equally excellent large cookies , bread and various Norse gifts. We also stop at the ones in DeForrest or Rice Lake depending what direction we are headed and find all of them with the same excellent food . Ambiance is charming . They made a small mistake on my order so came to let me know, re-made it, and compensated us with a free slice of pie without us asking. The bakery shelves are overflowing with large pies and cookies etc. While you can tell the business isn't quite what it used to be (eg empty NN boutique storefront across the road), the food is excellent and I wish we lived locally to order pies and lefse. read more

End of an Era!!! Norske Nook was embedded in my heart and mind as a wonderful treasure. It was a destination stop every year on our way to Ely Mn. A few years ago my son and his wife relocated to the Twin Cities. I was delighted to know every trip home to Illinois after visiting them would mean a stop at Norske! Today was one of those stops. I can honestly say I was completely shocked and question if we will ever return. The Norske Nook has nose dived on all levels!!! The service was barely more than terrible. I had to flag down our waitress after a long wait to just get a cup of coffee.(it wasn't super busy), the creamers had opened and spilled containers in the bowl, our waitress had zero table side manner and seemed to be put off by us asking for a few minutes to gather our order, when I did get my coffee it was a half cup, we had ordered 3 sides of bacon, not one of them was cooked correctly, it was either clearly undercooked or brittle and dry as a cracker, my corned beef hash was cold, my daughters potato pancakes were absolute mush and totally undercooked and we had to ask for the sour cream...I only hoped the pie would be the saving grace to this terrible disappointment. When the waitress asked if we were having pie and we said yes, she asked "are you dining in or taking it to go, if it's to go you can just get it at the register." When I informed her we would be dining in...her response was " what do you want?" and it wasn't a pleasant inquiry. We needed a few minutes after her return we ordered...she brought me the wrong pie... her response to me was it looks the same. Finally we got our pie...needless to say it was not the saving grace I had hoped for. I don't know what has happened here, but it's an absolute shame. This place was arguably one of the best dining experiences around. It has become a total shell of its glory days. On our way up north we stopped here for lunch. Me, having an appreciation for Norse cooking since I'm of Norwegian ancestry and growing up with it, was enticed by the signs. Upon our arrival we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. We were in no hurry, so we went across the street to the gift shop to look at stuff while we waited. They have all kinds of fun items over there, and my son even picked up an item he wanted. When we went back across the street our table was ready. Our server was nice and friendly. No issues there. The food was good. Their menu had a lot of items on it that attracted my attention. The one that really jumped out at me was the Norwegian Meatball Lefse wrap. I love Lefse, I love Norwegian Meatballs... I've never had them together, so hey, let's try it. My son thought the same thing, and we're glad we did. It was amazing. Very delicious and filling. Unfortunately we were too full for pie. Which seems to be what they are known for. They had many on display, along with some of the biggest cookies I've ever seen.
