I have to say, I was very excited when I heard Norma's had a stuffed guava cream cheese king cake. I was very disappointed. First of all, it's $35!! Second, it looked like they didn't even try. The icing was poorly smeared on, BARELY any sugar, and the "stuffed" guava cream cheese was a spread. I might as well just bought the ingredients myself and spread it on toast. Cuban sandwiches are the best. Now for the rest of the bakery I love the pastries. They have some tables where you can sit and enjoy. I only didn't like that I called to place the order for my sandwich today and when I got there they said someone called to cancel it. Honduran Tamales are my favorite . There's 2 or 3 different kinds, i think, that's just my preference. I've shopped around in here for my little special items, crema, cheeses, plantain, stores cannot even compare to. Yummy . They've been very helpful in finding my favorite foods, in my visits @ this location. Is this The worst Cuban Sandwich? Not sure if the new building is the one to blame, but it seems to me that This place has gone down in quality. Are they now cutting corners on how they make this sandwich because of new building? This is how it went: I walked up to the deli. No one was there and had to wait a little while to get waited on...finally someone showed up and took my order... The sandwich was already pre-made and stored in a cooler. The size was between 6" and 7" in size. The sandwich wasn't only very small, but the ingredients/toppings, were missing proportioned to the size. It was somewhat cold in the middle and warm on the outside. The flavor was ok. Not the same. The portions are more like a 6" subway. I believe that if you want to brag about having the best "Cuban sandwich", then make it as such. Don't skimp on the size, and make sure your quality is the same with consistency from the size, the ingredients, all the way to the flavor and presentation. I'm not sure if I want to try it again. The girl at the register didn't even care about me mentioning the small size of it when I brought it to her attention. I guess somethings aren't that important to them...and for sure, caring for the customer isn't their first priority. Horrible customer service! I ordered a cake for my daughters 4 birthday and to get someone to place the order it took 20 mins and they didn't understand what I wanted! A mermaid cake thats all I wanted!!! Mind you I speak Spanish ‍ I finally placed my order and it came out to $75 dollars!!!! So I picked up the cake it had cracks all over it!!!! This place is a hole in the wall Honduran bakery/grocery and if you are not hispanic you will feel a bit out of place, but all of that aside they make an AMAZING cuban sandwich. When I was craving a taste of the now closed Garce's that used to be on D'hemecourt in Mid City I found this place somehow and the sandwiches are just as good. Grab some garlic plantain chips to go with it and of course a piece of some of the best tres leches cake around. It is hard to leave here and not get something sweet since the aroma of the bakery overwhelms the place. The Cuban is DIRT CHEAP. The bread was crunchy and buttery and pressed flat. It had roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, mustard and pickles. The roast pork was my favorite part of the sandwich because it was so tender. I wouldn't call Norma's a restaurant. It only has a few small tables. It is more of a bakery/latin grocery than a restaurant. They have great desserts here. Another thing to try is their nacatamales (nicaraguan tamales). Not to be passed up. But the best item is their cuban sandwich. Their cuban sandwich is made perfectly. I love cuban sandwiches and am always on the prowl looking for great cuban sandwiches (as well as gumbo). A cuban sandwich is basically a ham and cheese sandwich lol. What makes it so much better than a regular ham and cheese sandwich is the roasted pork. Add pickles too and you're all set. The cuban bread is then flattened with a press and toasted and you end up with a sandwich that is thin, hot, crispy, and oozing delicious melted cheese!! MUST TRY!!! read more

A friend highly recommended Norma's, and once we googled the address, we were on our way! The place is kind of ducked off and easy to pass up if you're not paying attention and the parking lot is tiny, but they serve one of the best sandwiches I've ever had... the pork was very juicy and that bread! If you go to Norma's for one thing, let it be the Cuban sandwich! Yes, its a bakery and all their sweet things are fabulous too! But, I can honestly say its the best cuban sandwich that I've ever had in New Orleans including the one at Jazz Fest that people love. The pork is legit fall apart good and so full of flavor. The rest of the ingredients are top quality and they get the ratio just right. There is the perfect amount of pickles and mustard to compliment the meat and cheese without overpowering the flavor. The bread is fresh and pressed to perfection. Flaky, buttery, sturdy, but not too stiff that it rips up your mouth. The sandwich is also only $7. It's big enough to split, but you won't want to so just order yourself a whole sandwich. In addition to them slinging sandwiches, cakes and other sweets, it's basically a tiny spanish market/bakery with 2 narrow aisles and a cooler packed with imported goods. They have 4 or 5 small tables you can sit at if you are dining in, but definitely a "to go" type place especially if you are feeding a group. Another thing I've gotten at Norma's is the pinatas! They are HUGE and beautiful. Way cuter and cheaper than getting from a party store. It's tucked away in Kenner behind Williams blvd, but it's literally right off the interstate so no excuses to pass this gem up! read more

By far the best Spanish bakery around. The Tres Leche is delicious. The Cubano sandwich is excellent. The meat filled postillitos are so good. The Nicaraguan Nacatamales are good. I have never had a bad experience here. People are super nice and helpful. You can usually find someone who speaks English too for those who don't speak Spanish. read more

I'm surprised I haven't written a review for this place yet. But it's now or never! My family and I were born in Guatemala. I was raised there during my youngster years, but pretty much grew up in New Orleans. I go back to visit my family in Guatemala quite frequently, and there's nothing like a good ole Tres Leches or Arroz con Leche when I go "home". I can't remember how long ago it was that my family and I discovered this place, but I remember coming home and seeing a tres leches in the refrigerator and just the fact that I saw that cake in AMERICA was like finding a pot of gold with a leprechaun standing next to it. I was so thrilled! Honestly, at that very moment, I didn't care where it came from. I just wanted to eat it... well, then I finished it and I had to go buy another one before daddy saw that I ate the whole cake. My mom told me where the bakery was. I think I drove up and down the street like 5 times before I saw it. It's so small... but my goodness, great things come in small packages. My parent's home is in Kenner, so it's less than 10 minutes from their house. Very conveniently located in my case. Now that I live uptown, I wish I could find a place like this in my area. But until then, stop by Normas and get yourself a Tres Leches! You won't regret it! I am obsessed with guava and cheese. I lived in Miami and always crave them. So whenever I am back in miami you can definately find me eating lots and lots of this awesome pastry..... While they do speak Spanish & appear to have many Hispanic customers they do speak English. I grabbed a bag of hot & spicy plantains to eat with it which was scrumptious. Tiny little place off of williams, nearly right behind French Press Coffeehouse. They offer some sandwiches and baked goods as well as some groceries. Let's just say I've been to Norma's 3 times the past month since I've re-discovered it. The cuban sandwich is worthy of a return, yes. But what keeps me coming back is the flan!!! Oh my god, it's absolutely delicious! Have not tried many other of the baked goods but I am looking forward to doing so in the future.. If I can stray away from the flan, that is.The staff is always VERY friendly when you walk in there, and every time I've been, there are locals hanging out on the porch people watching or enjoying a snack. The torta de cumpe or birthday cake here is amazing. I feel slightly guilty buying birthday cake on a random tuesday, but it just makes my whole week that much more bearable. I think its $4 or $6 for 4 days worth of cake. Really good to eat after work in place of dinner. Incredibly milky and moist, I could not recommend this cake or establishment more. Cubano... YUM. I've been on a Cubano kick lately; found another restaurant near work that sells 'em, but their prices don't beat Norma's... so, from that standpoint, I'll be a regular at Norma's. Cubanos are $6. I usually can't leave out of there without a small flan ($1.60). Both are pretty delicious. You have to wait for your cubano, which obviously is awesome since they make it while you wait. I also came out of there today with a pork pastry--$0.90 (not sure what it's called) and a chicken empanada ($1.60)... both tasty. Crappy parking lot, but it'll do.
