The restaurant is spacious, well-lit, and has a welcoming atmosphere. I was especially impressed by how quickly food was ready, even when they were very busy, and the hospitality was excellent. Since this was going to be a good distance from the hotel I was staying at, I hesitated because I knew my dog (who is in a wheelchair) would begrudgingly make this walk and I'd have to carry him. I cannot tell you how happy I am that I made the trip! These hand pulled noodles did not disappoint. Having walked through a good portion of gaslamp, it showed. This was the 1 restaurant on the middle of the day (around 3), that had people. Additionally, I waiters were so sweet and attentive. In an era of automation and people not looking up at screens, it was amazing to see a place with excellent customer service. I am an avid noodle fan, and these were well worth a lot mile trek with a 30lb dog on my back (glad I had a chance to work off a few calories before I indulged). The Dan Dan noodles were amazing - most of the time, it's a flat, soy flavor that looks less than appealing...but it was one of their most popular items and I can see why. It had such a great umami flavor that even after an hr when my other half got ahold of them, he casually took a bite, stopped and circled back to finish it off. The spicy brisket (for those of you that can't handle too hot) it stays at a comfortable level where you can enjoy the food and not feel like you're breathing fire. Also well executed - spicy, right level of salt, & a bit of bitter & sweet to hit all of your palette. I went against my instincts and I should have selected knife cut noodles, but the wide noodles were still delicious. Had to grab some spicy won ton too (gotta make it worth the trip), but again, one of those dishes you expect that "everyone else has" on the menu, but these were little dumplings of flavor. Not too spicy? Not too salty with a little hint of sweet to keep the palette guessing. We'll be back next time we're in SD for sure! read more

I would've never imagined Gaslamp to have a such a good noodle place, but the food here really blew me away. We tried the noodle dishes and that fresh hand pulled noodle really makes it stand out. They definitely have their dough right to give the noodles a bouncy texture. We tried the hand pulled noodle and the knife cut, and while I really like a thicker noodle, the hand pulled noodle picked up the broth really well. The braised beef in the beef noodle is packed with flavor and is sooo tender. The Lanzhou noodle comes with sliced beef with its own savoriness and is so soft as well. I really couldn't choose a fav between the two. The beef noodle was more savory, but the Lanzhou noodle broth was simple but rich making it super comforting. I got home late and was starving! I noticed that Noodle & Bun was still open...They closed in 15 minutes! The sat me down promptly, offered me a Chinese salad, not telling me what it would consist of. I accepted. I was in awe. A cucumber salad. Delicious! My entree was the spicy brisket. They only had the fat noodle available. I was okay with that. Thin, medium, thick, I didn't care. I was Hangry! To say it simply, this dish was OUTSTANDING! Fantastic flavor. The broth from the soup did not overpower the flavor of the meat. I do have one suggestion to the owners of the establishment. The lighting should be put on a dimmer. It's way too bright in there, feels almost like a hospital dining hall. Dim the lights and I can almost guarantee that your sales will increase. Came here for lunch during comic con weekend. We are rarely ever in the DT area but for comic con we make an exception. So glad to find Asian food walking distance as our little one is a picky eater. It took us a while to get seated as the comic con crowds were in full swing. They didn't have any kind of sign up sheet to put your name down so we had to keep track of which place we were in line based on when we got there. There was seating available inside and outside of the restaurant. Food was delicious and came out fairly quickly. The noodles were hand pulled in the kitchen (glass window so you can watch them doing this). We noticed that no one came to our table until we called for a server and told them we were ready to order. The groups seated after us got to place their orders before we did. We stayed an extra day after Comic Con to get situated and stumbled upon this place early in the morning. It looked so good, we came back after they opened. This place brings me back to the days of family trips to Chicago's China town! It's very spacious, and feels very authentic. The server was very quick and friendly, he even told us that we needed to try the noodles. Unfortunately, we were not trying to hit a food coma so early, and ended up getting the juicy dumplings, scallion pancakes and spicy beef shank. After eating Mexican food for days, we needed a change up. Both soups were delicious. The broth of the first one is a little less dense while the second one, is more deep/flavorful. The quantity and quality of the meat in the soups were also generous. The hand pulled noodles were perfectly chewy and the cucumbers were a nice cool addition to our warm soups. The service was efficient; our orders were taken right away, water was served, and the food came out quickly. We tried the spicy wontons after seeing reviews comparing them to Din Tai Fung's. Since those are a personal favorite, I was skeptical, but the flavor was surprisingly close. The sauce is slightly sweeter and not a 1:1, but it is delicious and offered at a great price point. Our first night in San Diego and my youngest son wanted asian food and he found this place during his search. We decided to give it a try and see how it is. When we walked in, we were greeted and seated right away. The place was very well lit and there were tables set for 4 people but from the layout, they can combines tables for bigger groups. There was a lot of room/space inside the restaurant. There are soy sauce, vinegar, and chili already at the table. We wanted to try some of the different food on the menu so we did family style order and shared. We ordered the soup dumpling and the spicy wonton to start off. The soup dumpling was similar to other places and I used the chili oil from the wonton to give it a spicier flavor. The chili wonton was also good. The wonton was not hard and the wrap was thin which was the way I like them. We ordered the beef wrap as well. The beef was very thin and there were a lot of greens. It says that there were cucumber, cilantro, and green onion but the green tasted and looked more like chives. The veggie was so empowering that it took away the flavor from the beef and made it very difficult to finish. I would skip this dish or they need to really limit the greens to balance the flavor and texture. This place was known for their hand pulled noodles so of course we had to get that and opted for the bone broth. The hand noodle was delicious. It was made perfectly and was not very chewy. The bone broth was a little bland. Folks might complain about that but I sometimes prefer the broth not to be overpowering so I can adjust to my taste which was I did with this broth. I mixed of the some chili and soy sauce that was at the table and put it in the broth. After mixing the condiments in, the broth had the flavor to my liking. My kids wanted to get fried rice to go so they can have a late night snack at the hotel in case they got hungry later. They ordered the combination and asked for no veggies. They really liked the fried rice and I can see why. The fried rice was not hard and was not mushy either. It was cooked at a good texture and had enough flavor where the seafood flavor did not overpower the poultry or meat. It was also not that bland where you need to add soy sauce or chili to enhance the flavor. Overall, the place was ok but if you want pulled noodle or like fried rice, you can give it a try. I would skip the beef wrap. While we were there, we noticed a couple showed up and were seated but the server didn't come to get their order after they were seated for some time. This was consistent to what others in the Yelp reviews have mentioned. When the couple waved someone to take their order, they were given a complimentary cucumber appetizer dish. If you get seated and ready to order, I would recommend waving someone to take your order just in case so you don'r just sit and wait. read more

I'd give this place a 3.5 if Yelp allowed it. We came to Noodle & Bun with high expectations after reading all the rave reviews, but unfortunately, we left pretty disappointed. To be fair, the food was definitely fresh, but we found the actual flavors to be really bland and boring. I ordered the Spicy Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, and it just wasn't spicy at all. I actually had to add about half a jar of the chili sauce from the table just to try and get some heat and flavor into the broth. My partner had the Veggie Chow Mein and ran into the same issue, needing to add a lot of soy sauce and chili oil just to give it some taste. We also shared the Veggie Spring Rolls, which were cooked nicely--light golden brown and very crispy--but again, they just lacked much flavor. I know I might be the outlier with my review, and maybe we just caught the kitchen on an off day. Like I said, the ingredients are fresh, but the dishes just needed a lot of help. A quick heads-up about the location: I'd strongly recommend eating inside rather than sitting at their outdoor tables. It's not that the entire Gaslamp area has this issue, but just where they are located on the street, there is a large homeless presence nearby and, unfortunately, a pretty strong smell of urine. On the bright side, the service was very attentive for this type of casual restaurant. They constantly kept our waters refilled and brought extra napkins without us even having to ask. I'm unsure whether the attentiveness was just a hustle to get people in and out quickly or because they genuinely wanted us to enjoy ourselves, but it was great either way.
