I have taken my pets to Nonantum since it opened in the 80s. The founding owner was a hands-on vet who was personable, gave great care, yet still maintained the small-town vet vibe. Unfortunately, after her passing the business was taken over by a managing chain. It has now become just another big vet chain business with more automation but less customer service when it's most needed - making initial contact with the company to schedule an appointment. It's nearly impossible to call to schedule an appointment and speak with a live person. When calling, you get the option of leaving a message for a callback or holding on the line. the problem is that no one ever picks up. I've tried calling four times since December and each time I have yet to have a live person pick up my call from being on hold. I'm beginning to think it's time to downsize to a smaller practice where I can actually get a hold of someone when needed. Playing phone tag or email tag is no longer cutting it. read more

My husband and I have used Nonantum since 1983 from Debby's tiny clinic with Dr. Manning to the modern facility now. Both of them could often look at your dog and see what was wrong without expensive tests. Whenever possible they taught us how to care for our dogs at home rather then sending them to an emergency facility overnight. In September we found that our last dog had cancer. We chose palliative care for Hobbit and Dr. Woodcock helped us enjoy him for 4 more months. I never regretted driving from Wilmington all those years and if a foster appears I will be making that drive again. Special thanks to Kenny Roberts for keeping Debby's dream alive and going bigger. (Used to go to Longwood Vet, but got too pricey). Friendly enough staff; front desk is always crazy busy but are efficient. Vets are thorough and educate on pros/cons of treatment options. (Appointments were for loose stool, itching/scratching, ear infection) Physicals were thorough which I really value as our Lab is usually off leash and very active i.e. swims in local river a few times a week, roams at cabin, hikes with hubby. Lab doesn't seem to notice getting shots. Our dog loves going there; go figure! read more

RIP Debbie Roberts who started this business. Her warm heart and veterinary expertise lives on in her staff and resident veterinarians. We have had many cats but only take them there when they have a medical issue. Sadly we've had to say goodbye to a few due to urinary tract infections and when that happened their passing was handled with respect and compassion. This group will not bilk you for unnecessary procedures and have really reasonable prices for visits, procedures and medication. We have never had an issue with getting our cats in when they needed immediate attention or just a regular appointment. By the way, Debbie's husband, Kenny, can bring his water truck to fill your pool. Good people out here in the country. read more

The staff is extremely nice friendly and helpful. However they are untruthful about what they charge you. I have two witnesses who were on speaker phone call where they told us it would be $25 for the vet visit 50 to 55 for bloodwork. They charge 50 for the visit and 80 for blood work and would not to make any adjustments or apologize or confirm that this was correct or incorrect with two people telling me the same thing. Hands down the best vet I have ever experienced compared to multiple others I've used though the years and places we've lived. We've been using Nonantum for 3-4 years taking great care of our dogs and cats. They've never been one to oversell you on unnecessary services, but do take great care in diagnosing and treating your animals correctly and with great loving care. Most recently they helped with the passing of our sweet older sheltie. I could not of asked for more compassion, or more confident guidance and advice through the extremely difficult time. They even gave great attention to our young children and showed them some much needed distractions when it was very much needed. Absolutely amazing staff. Dr. Kabakjian was a Godsend. Once again we are so pleased with Nonantum staff's concern and quick response to our dog's health. Our almost 10 year old rescue Doberman mix dog contracted Kennel cough and then also ate a prescription pill of ours that is highly toxic to dogs. They told us to come immediately and call the pet poison center on the way for their instructions. They were so compassionate with him and us and allowed us to stay there for a couple of hours as they monitored his reaction. All ended well and they were able to also give him an antibiotic to avoid pneumonia and a cough suppressant with something to thin out the mucus he had been coughing up. read more

When we moved into North Star (Delaware) in mid-2015, we needed to find a new Vet, and I'm so glad we found Nonantum! The Vets there are caring, knowledgeable and go the extra mile to help you understand what's going on with your pet. Our dog slowly became more and more aggressive over time, until finally we decided to put him down. I called Nonantum on a Saturday morning, and they got us in within an hour. They were so supportive during such a difficult time. They let us be with him for as long as we needed and were incredibly gentle with him and us during his final moments. When we got our new puppy a short time later, there was no question that we were going back to Nonantum. Through shots, medications, ear/eye infections, Nonantum has always been able to schedule us right away and truly cares about our dog! We're moving out of the area, and we'll miss Nonantum! This clinic has changed for the worse. The front desk receptionists and technicians have reached a new low. It's a shame because the doctors have been consistently good. I called for a script today for my cat who was urinating blood. I gave the name and the location of the pharmacy. I was told that the pharmacy would call me when it was ready. I waited several hours and never received a call. Called my pharmacy and they had no record of it. Called Nonantum and spoke to a receptionist Heather. She said that no doctors or technicians were available to speak with and attempted to put me through to a recorded line to leave a message. I explained the severity of the situation and requested a call back. As it was getting late and I hadn't received a call, I called again. I spoke to a technician Jessica. She proceeded to tell me that it was called into a location that I had not requested and was nowhere near me. Instead of apologizing, she proceeded to tell me that I should have had the phone number to the pharmacy that I requested when I spoke to the original technician. Absolutely no concern for my cat was displayed. I gave her the number of my pharmacy. She called me back about a half hour later to state that my pharmacy didn't have the medication. As it was getting close to their closing time I insisted that she call other pharmacies near to me. The charming response I got was a call from the head technician, Heidi, that I was treating her staff inappropriately (she used other verbage). There was absolutely no concern for my cat urinating blood left with no medication. There was no suggestion of how they could come to some solution or help me the following day. It was about themselves and covering for their mistakes. This is unethical and negligent. Their should be some type of legal recourse for leaving an animal in this situation. read more

Our family has been coming to Nonantum since it first opened. The vets here are always so kind to the animals and their owners. Our pets have come here for regular visits, emergency surgeries, and end of life care. At all times Nonantum has been amazing and supportive. They explain everything in detail, answer all your questions without making you feel rushed, follow-up to make sure you pet is fine after surgeries, and are extremely conscious in terms of cost. I never write reviews, but felt I had to. Worst vet experience I have ever had. Please don't bring your pets here. It doesn't deserve any stars. They have several different vets who will all give you different medical diagnoses. In December I was told by Dr. Stewart that my cat had a small cancer spot, and offered medication for her elevated liver enzymes. AT NO TIME was further testing for her elevated calcium level or need for an ultrasound for her intestines brought up. Fast forward to this April, when I bring her back in, and a completely different doctor, Dr. Michel, says my cat DOES NOT have cancer, and instead, the high calcium levels have brought on kidney failure. Which is it? She has cancer, or she doesn't? And now you're saying that it was the calcium levels that killed her? (Oh, and she has a fat lump, no, it's a hernia...but really it is a fat lump. How hard is that to tell?) Dr. Michel was retiring and told me she would recommend someone there to me, as "not all the doctors here are trained the same way." She could tell my cat's case was mismanaged. I had to euthanize my cat because of her kidneys. This could have been avoided if the calcium levels were dealt with. I called to discuss this with the office manager--that at no time was my cat offered diagnostics or management for the calcium--and all he did was argue with me that the "record states that an ultrasound was mentioned" in December and that it was me who declined it. I have no memory of any ultrasound being mentioned to see what my cat's issues really were. Of course, their doctors don't make mistakes. Dr. Stewart obviously must have said "ultrasound" because the record states that. It was my mistake. I just didn''t want the ultrasound. He had no answer when I asked him why my cat was not offered medications or a special diet to help with the calcium, which can cause kidney failure. He just kept repeating and arguing that the record stated an ultrasound was mentioned. This practice is recommended by so many people, and has great reviews, but it is nothing but trouble. Stay away. And I can only wait to see how Nonantum will respond to my review (probably by mentioning how they gave me free expedited shipping for liver meds that they had forgotten to order in the first place). read more

We just took our 2 year old mini golden doodle there for his first visit, Dr Sharon was amazing. She got down on the floor and made our dog comfortable before she began his check up. She took her time and was very good. All of the staff was professional, our dog had blood drawn without even flinching. Dr Sharon called the same day and explained his blood work. It all begins with the front desk staff----they are efficient, caring, professional and a pleasure to deal with. I have never had an issue getting an appointment and checking in and checking out has been easy during the days of Covid 19. Dr Teti had always been my vet of choice at Nonantum and I was disappointed when he left the practice. I have recently been seeing either Dr Suzanne Michel or Dr Laura Johnson for Odin and Riley (2 large bullmastiffs). Both of these vets are AMAZING! Most recently I have seen Dr Johnson for some follow up care with Riley after having a tumor removed and I could not have been more pleased. She is kind, professional, knowledgeable and great with Riley (a 125# bullmastiff who is not thrilled with going to the vet). Dr Chris Manning did Riley's surgery and he did an outstanding Job!! I also would be remiss if I did not mention all of the vet techs who meet us at the car, reviewed my concerns, and take the dogs back and forth to see the doctor. We are always greeted with a smile, an obvious concern for the dogs, and an efficient recording of all issues that brought us to Nonantum that day. Nonantum will always be the vet of choice for my Bullmastiffs. Pricing is fair, staff is pleasant and approachable, veterinarians are great diagnosticians and compassionate with the animals they treat. They are an amazing team from arrival at the clinic and check out at the end of the visit! read more

Veterinary NSAID medication prescribed negligently by veterinarian that resulted in death Our four year old, Labrador retriever in excellent health was evaluated at a routine exam for a CCL injury. We were sent home from the consult with Novox (Carprofen) and told only to keep our dog fully activity restricted. We were not given any other verbal or written information about the medication. We trusted the veterinarian to provide necessary information assuming that if the medication had side effects, serious enough to cause death, that the veterinarian would of their initiative, alert the pet owner to potential adverse side effects. Severe liver failure occurred along with a perforating gastric ulcer (known side effects of the medication) that per the treating veterinarians was a result of the Rimadyl. The pharmaceutical manufacturer and FDA drug label state that Carprofen is only approved safe if prescribed per the drug label which states: always give the pet owner the CIS. The veterinarian prescribed a veterinary medication that had the potential for serious adverse reactions including death without alerting the pet owner to this information. Never take your pet to a veterinary facility that does not disclose the CIS when prescribing and dispensing a medication. This drug adverse reaction caused our family great emotional loss as well at $8000 in financial loss. read more
