We came to JT to boulder but forgot our climbing shoes at home. We were nervous they wouldn't have much if any vegan options. Cole reassured us they had plenty! Before showing us shoes, he mentioned that they offer daily shoe rentals of these nice Butora shoes for $15/day. I would've rented but ended up loving these new MadRock shoes Cole personally tried and recommended. They're vegan, felt and looked great, and were only $79! The prices are very reasonable and competitive, as much as if not cheaper than REI, so definitely makes sense to support this local gem! When you're desperate to get your hands on some Dirty Girl Gaiters before a trail run and find out that the closest vendor that carries them is down the street from where you're staying... it's like an answered prayer. Not sure if this is the only gear shop in the area, but this one is probably the best one. They have everything you need from wipes to guidebooks to climbing gear to backpacking food to rentals to my GAITERS. LOL. Small shop located right next to the JTNP visitor center in 29 Palms. There comes a time in our life when we are either in painted camping or thrown into camping. If you have to camp at Joshua tree, and you are unprepared or inexperienced, this is the best place. People are friendly and supportive and informative. No one made fun of any of my dumb questions. They had almost everything I needed and more. The store itself was pretty spacious and well organized so I could walk around easily. It also has a ramp and a handicap spot for parking if you personally do not walk. It had tent gear, rock climbing gear, rehydratable food, and other cool stuff. Regrettably I forgot to take a picture of the interior before leaving. Since we were made good time getting to Joshua Tree, we stopped by Nomad Ventures for a quick look-see. Nomad Ventures has many outdoor products, great place to check out if you happened to forget something at home or re-supply. They do specialize in climbing gear, which was great for me since I'm getting into this sport! I appreciate the customer service of this place, they aren't pushy sales people trying to up-sell you items but truly want you to find products you're looking for. Right when you come through the door they greet you and ask if there's anything particular you want to look at. At first I was just going to browse around but I ended up leaving this store with new harness! It was the same harness that my friend was using so I knew it was quality, and even though she got it slightly cheaper online, with shipping and all it would have worked out to be a similar price. Also in a store like Nomad Ventures I got to try on about four different harnesses to be sure of my purchase. It was cool, they actually hang you from the ceiling in the harness so you get an accurate idea of fit. Cheers to Nomad Ventures keeping prices within reason. The best gear shop in Joshua Tree in my opinion. If you are missing gear or need some last minute additions before any climbing trips out here, this is the place to be. There is a great selection of gear to choose from here. I would also check sales items for hidden bargains. It's at the corner of the street across the Valero and next to the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor's Center for the West entrance. Prices here are fair in my opinion. It's literally on the road that heads in to the park through the northern entrance - super convenient. The people who work there are really friendly and seem to be willing to answer any questions you have about renting or buying gear. They have climbing shoe rentals for $10/day (24 hrs). I enjoyed my time there. Especially thanks to Kat/Katherine/Katrina (sorry, my mind can be like a sieve). She's HIL. Aaaaair. I think I spent maybe an hour in there just talking with her. Good rapport. Very good repertoire, indeed. So there's a sign in the store that says "if you bleed on it, you bought it." Or something like that. It's there for a reason. If you're curious enough, maybe you can ask about it. I, fortunately am not much of a bleeder. However, if I were and I was pretty financially well-off, I'd spatter everywhere. Or mmmaybe I wouldn't. This place is fantasitc! These guys are all super helpful, knowledgable and friendly! I had some issues with my new Osprey pack that I purchased on Neputune Mountainering after being fitted at REI. I came in here after training with my pack on Ryan Mountain in the JTNP and came in here to see if they could help me figure out why I was having issues still. Brad helped me and was super helpful. Kudos to them for how kind they were and helpful. The store is small. It's no Adventure 16 or REI but they do have a lot of gear for all of your adventurous needs! I even picked up a French Press for my MSR Windburner stove here.. Tons of maps and books as well!! read more

This is an outfitting store at one of the entrances to the Joshua Tree National Park. Considered their location the prices for gear are usually equal or less than REI. They are a small shop, but they have a great selection of camping and hiking gear. Nomad has one of the largest selection of rock climbing gear I've seen in any one location. Unlike the REI's in the middle of Downtown City, USA you will find a staff of people who know their product, use their product and get instant feedback from those they sell their product to. Located on Park Road (named for it's leading you to Joshua Tree National Park) this is a little store that stocks a variety of products. Most, if not all, the staff climb when they aren't working making it a joy to speak with them about the gear in the store and where in the Park you are headed. Heed their advice, weary traveller. I love stores where the staff are knowledgeable and passionate about what they sell and use the products themselves -- all the more so when shopping for something like outdoor gear where you really want a sales assistant with expertise and ideally personal experience rather than someone just rattling off the promotional copy from the sales brochure. We've been climbing for close to six years now and hiking much longer, and the staff at Nomad Ventures definitely know their stuff. They're also friendly, helpful and laid back. There's no pressure and if you prefer to browse on your own, that's cool too. But this is a great place to get expert advice and if you're just getting started with climbing, I can't think of a better store to get outfitted. The store isn't huge, but the focus here is on quality, not quantity. Rather than try to carry everything, which is impossible at any rate, they carry a selection of the best products from many of the top brands. This isn't a discount store, so expect to pay full retail unless something's on sale, but please don't be one of those people who take advantage of the ability to try things on and get expert advice in-store only to then turn around and order online to save a few bucks. Independent brick and mortar stores can't stay in business if people keep doing that and in the case of Nomad Ventures that would be a real shame! read more

Terrible customer service. Walked in this past Sunday, three people behind the counter, not one of them looked my way or acknowledged me with a hello. Went in to spend some serious money on climbing, camping, and backpacking gear. After being in the store for 10 minutes without anyone offering to help, my wife and I decided to leave. They lost a sell worth well over $2,000. If you cannot even acknowledge a customer when they walk in what kind of support will we get if we have issues with gear. We have visited this store twice since moving to S. California. I have spent most of my adult life shopping at REI in Seattle where they have excellent selection and excellent staff with a lot of local expertise. I believe Nomad Ventures is even better! They have a full selection of local maps and a staff who has hiked and camped in many of the areas on the maps. Being an avid backpacker, I was amazed to find one of their staff members hike Mexico to Canada on the PCT last year. One young lady suggested a great backpacking area which we visited last weekend. The thru-PCT hiker later added several choices for future hikes. Along with a relatively full selection of gear for local hikes and climbs I was surprised to see quality glacier gear. Definitely a store to frequent when (if) you're in the area, or one of their 3 other stores. read more

Use caution when leaving your credit card info for rental services!!! I rented shoes through Nomad Adventures and their procedure is to write down your credit card number, 3 digit security code, and address on a paper form. When I came back to return the shoes, the employee did not return my paper form but assured me that the form would be destroyed. A couple hours afterwards, several attempts were made on my credit card for internet purchases of almost $1,000 each. After dealing with the bank I called Nomad right away and spoke to a manger to inform them of what happened. All he basically said was "none of my employees would do that" - and that was it. I would just caution future renters to be sure that they retrieve that form with all the credit card info on it and personally destroy it - but it's probably best to just bring your own shoes..... read more

Sorry that Kelsi was very unwelcoming to us as we walked in to shop. A little politeness could have gone a long way. We have a Medical Alert Service Animal for seizure detection. She told us they have an employee who is allergic to animals. Rather than tell the allergic employee that an animal was present, she preferred to turn business away. Very sad as it really makes a person who suffers from a disability feel unwelcome and unwanted. This may seem small and insignificant to many, though her attitude was very unwelcoming rather than warm and inviting this holiday season. Working service animals are the eyes, ears, and detection that help keep their owner's safe. It makes me personally very sad to witness how this makes my partner's in life feel. Blessings. read more

When it comes to certain things, I'm most assuredly jaded. I've been into climbing and backpacking and such outdoors things for years now. When I first started, REI was like a magically place, that required more self-control in myself to not spend all my money than my girlfriend needs in Forever 21. As the years have gone on though, I'm jaded - I don't go to REI unless I REALLY need something. In fact most stored of this ilk leave me un-impressed. That said... No trip to Joshua Tree National Park for a day or for a week of rock climbing would be complete without a stop by Nomad Ventures. Located right at the corner of the turn off to the west entrance to the park, Nomad is not only a great climbing shop for the location, but one of the better climbing and outdoor shops I've been to anywhere is the country. While REI and Adventure 16 in the LA area are passable, they do not come close to Nomad as far as selection and quality of brands when it comes to climbing gear. They are wide selection of climbing hardware, and a wall full of ropes. They have good selection climbing shoes, but not so much as far as other shoes except for a few approach shoes. As for other stuff like clothes, they carry really good brands like Mountain Hardware, Pata-gucci, and pRana. They have a great selection of packs and some tents. Ok, so it is hit and miss, depending on what you are looking for. What really shines though is their book selection. Of course that have many copies of the various J-tree climbing guides, but they also have huge array of guide, not only from all over California, but all over the country and the world. We even found a guide for Long Dong crags in Taiwan, which we didn't even know existed. The staffs here is super helpful and friendly, even to beginners and non-climbers, and are climbers themselves so they are knowledgeable about the gear (as opposed to REI). Hell, even if you only going to J-tree to look at the beautiful scenery, this is great place to get a souvenir. read more

Pretty much everything you'd ever need to climb in Joshua Tree - trad gear, shoes, harnesses, bouldering pads, and clothing. Nomad puts REI and Adventure 16 to shame. They also have the best climbing shoe and climbing guide book selection I've ever seen - we were able to score a book for trad climbing in Taiwan for our next visit. This place is staffed by climbers who are knowledgeable and helpful - both about the gear and the climbing. There's also a smattering of camping equipment for all those staying out in Hidden Valley. Like Eddy S. said - usually full retail prices - but it's nice to support a local specialty store of this quality - I'm ok with the few extra bucks. read more

These guys are super friendly and pretty much have anything you need for backpack camping, car camping, climbing or hiking. Super close to Joshua tree national Park, relatively easy to find this place super convenient if you forgotten some equipment or need to bolster your stash. My sister and I took my parents camping in Joshua tree and we ran out of caffeinated tea which was no Bueno for my parents who have at least 2 cups of coffee a day. I was looking for a percolator and they had just the thing. I opted for the smaller 6 cup option but they did have a larger version. Again the service was very friendly super helpful and we are out of there within 15 minutes with exactly what we needed and I was super pumped to rip some coffee the next morning! read more
