Talk about filling a need. What would Joshua Tree be without the park. It's located pretty much right on the main road on the turnout to the park so anyone who is not stocked or needs something comes here, except for maybe food/water and firewood. They have technical clothing, equipment for hiking, climbing, camping, training, etc. Most of the staff climbs or climbs for a living while working there on the side. It's a great community up there where people spent long period in the park and come down to refuel, relax and communicate with the outside world as the park is off the grid. Check out the shoe sales and gear they have everything for rock climbers and camping as those are the 2 biggest draws for extended time in the park. This is the main store and the largest, they do transfers regularly and are priced the same as the other locations. Again staff is super knowledgeable, but maybe not as friendly as they are itching to fix their climbing needs all the time. They stock some items that I wouldn't necessarily think people would need out there, but hey you can never been too prepared. They are the only outdoor retailer for the entire valley so check it out unless you don't care about quality then go to Walmart and buy Coleman gear. read more

I make sure to stop here everytime I come down for some climbing in JTree. They have a really great selection of cams, shoes, harnesses and ropes, everything you need. They also have a reasonable clothing selection and other camping gear. Mainly though, they are great because they are very climbing focussed and have a knowledgeable friendly staff. They'll even do cam repair if you need it. I'm usually saving a few bucks up before my Jtree trip so that I can drop them here. read more

Walked through the door only to be blown off in favor of the yuppies coming in behind me. No courtesy greeting, nothing. Was disgusted, and walked out. Been in before to stagger at the high prices and was disgusted then. Caters to mostly tourists, as the locals won't hardly deal with the place. I went in to browse and did not think I needed anything. Just kidding. They had an English language guide to climbing via ferrata routes in the Dolomites, which I will be climbing this summer. Thanks Ryan and Andy! My wife and I are new to the area and decided we'd take full advantage of the many parks and trails, etc in the area. We went into Nomad like a couple of idiots knowing nothing, expecting to be treated like the kooks that we are. Ryan and Andy really took time with us picking out good shoes, they seriously know their products and treated us like we were spending millions in their store. We even went back in to exchange a pair of our shoes the next day because of a fit issue. Yeah, they are a climbing specialty store but they also have all the gear you'll need for regular hiking as well. Also chances are you've come to JT unprepared for either how hot or how cold it is. Either way Nomad's got you covered. The staff here are really super friendly and helpful. It's clear they love working here and love JT. read more

The only place to get gear in JTree, but having a monopoly doesn't make them complacent. Great selection, very knowledgeable staff. Friendly and will to get into technical conversations about climbing and big walls and hauling and whatever. We bought my husband his 1st pair of Vibrams here. The only way to find a bigger selection of Vibrams is to drive all the way to Palm Springs, so this is THE PLACE if you are in/near 29 Palms (where my husband was stationed for training with the Marine Corps at the time). We were greeted & offered assistance right away. The employee who took care of us was very well-informed about Vibrams & helped us find a pair that was just right for the local terrain. They also had a healthy selection of Injinji (toe) socks, with everything at reasonable prices. Helpful service, informed employees & good prices - doesn't get any better! :) read more

Excellent deal on used climbing shoes for my son, only $20!

Ground zero for stoves & parts! They carry every single part for a whisperlite, and will offer to sell you a .60 cent replacement piece rather than attempt to up sell you on a whole new stove. The guy I spoke with even took my whole stove apart for me, in order to troubleshoot it before pinpointing the problem area. Amazing service. Oh he also gave me great advice on where to find the best sport routes in the park :) Not to mention the water spigot out back! I wish there were a gear shop in nyc this great. read more

Climber's paradise! A fun store and well stocked for climbers and also other outdoors people. Great selection of books on the park, and also on local desert flora and fauna. Very helpful crew at this store too. It's right at the corner of the 62 and Park Road, next to the Joshua Tree National Park Visitors Center, making it a quick trip from the park if you need a quick replacement item. read more

I bought a pair of Chacos on the 5th of May. By the 31st of May both sandals were flapping out on the inside edge. I buy local in order to have the owner stand behind the products they sell. The best the owners could do it to take the shoes, and send them off to the manufacturer and ask if they would qualify for a refund. Upon inspection of Ebay I find the same Chacos sandals for $30 less. read more

Store has a lot of great gear, but was very disappointed by the service. Owners are very condescending and unhelpful to newcomers to the area. Really a locals only store, which isn't great for someone like myself who came to Joshua tree for my first time to rock climb. Won't be visiting there again! read more

They were so rude this morning! I was just so use to getting a 15% discount because I work at a climbing gym, & they responded so disgusted as if I was robbing them?! I am always at the local Nomad Venture shopping for all my necessities and they're always proud to provide me with my discount. In exchange I usually say nothing but GREAT things about the store(where I live locally) and how knowledgeable they are, how helpful they are! I wasn't so much upset about not getting a discount as I was surprised about the reaction I got... Wow, ill just make sure I pick up my goods before I make the 3 hour drive... Great little outdoor gear store near the Joshua Tree Visitor center. I was expecting tourist gouging prices for some last minute supplies but was surprise that prices was similar to non-tourist areas or just a tiny bit more. The staff was very helpful too. After spending a night in 20 degrees weather , we came into see what the staff would recommended for the next night. Rather than just informing us on some potentially expensive garments, they suggest to us that we could heat ourselves up with hot water in nalgene bottles or buying cheap heat packets. read more

Went in to pick up a harness and shoes for climbing and were pleasantly surprised at how well stocked this place is. The staff were very knowledgeable and really spent time with my wife and I to make sure we got appropriate gear without breaking the bank. Not sure how the pricing compares with, say, REI, but I'd happily pay more for this kind of service. read more
