I literally don't know what happened to this place about 10 years ago. This was the coolest like alternative wear store and it has genuinely turned into weird secondhand overpriced bullshit with some sex toys in the back In front, they had a bunch of clothes that were secondhand hung up, and I was interested in one because I thought it was cute. I pulled it out and it was literally H&M divided brand We walked around and they had more secondhand clothing, which was just stupid and ugly honestly and then in the back it was just so unorganized nothing really special to set them apart besides the handmade leather wear, but obviously they're not selling any of it because it's extremely expensive these people that sell their items to them should just open their own online store or something. I don't know. We were barely greeted as well, it seems like the workers would rather do anything else than help a customer not that I needed help because honestly what you see is what you get there there was no merchandising being done so everything just kind of looked hung up. It just looked trashed in there about 10 years ago, it was so cool almost like a crowded Halloween store in a way but for casual alternative wear and then the back room was of course sex toys but it literally looks like it got hit by a truck. I don't know if they have a new owner but they need to get themselves in check. I really wish I took pictures, but the store was very empty compared to how it used to be filled with secondhand alternative brands, such as Demonias and Pleasers filling one of the walls and cases of cool jewelry, but all of that is gone Also, there was no sex toys that wouldn't be at like a normal sex store. don't be fooled by the small shop, my partner and i browsed the shop for over an hour and left with some lovely finds. size range is inclusive, although there was only one xs in the whole shop when i was there (now there are none because i bought it haha). four stars because the fitting room is lacking a door and instead features two curtains that don't fully pull shut. if you are on the taller side, your head will peak out over the curtains, which can be quite awkward if the shop is busy. this is only a problem if you are trying on their selection of clothes, but if your main goal is accessories or toys, the fitting room is trivial. overall, i would come here again and again. everything is fetish friendly, but i left with items i will wear both in and out of the bedroom. read more

Two raunchy store reviews back to back? What can I say, let the fun begin! After totally being disappointed in fun & fantasy and all the lovers lane being closed down I decided to come here for a little bit of bachelorette fun! Not gonna lie, I was in fact a bit freaked out by all the alternative clothing but if you're into that kinda stuff this store must be on favs list because they had a ton of it! They have racks of fishnets, thigh highs, shoes and other goodies up front but the real fun is in the back of the store! I reluctantly went here with my girlfriend because she was curious about some stuff and wanted me to buy her some nice things. I had intended on doing just that too, but because of the obnoxious attitude and behavior of the man/woman/drag queen looking person I will not let her go back nor plan on ever stepping foot in this store again. Apparently you have to look like a reject in a Marylyn Manson type outfit and gaudy makeup to work here or shop here. If you are an average person you will not get a welcome to... or can I help you find anything. You will be completely ignored. The place is cramped and not laid out very well and looks as if no one has cleaned anything but the glass on the display cases since it was opened. There is an odd smell too that I can't quite explain but it is certainly unpleasant. The music while it wasn't quite my taste wasn't totally awful as I have heard worse but not a fan of crappy EDM myself. When asking one of the... I want to say women, but really not sure if it was a man in drag or what and didn't want to be rude and ask if they were a dude or just an ugly deep voiced woman in heavy makeup? I got an eye roll, as if taking them away from their conversation about burlesque show stuff was super important and how dare this little imp intrude on such important matters. gasp.... When my gf started to ask questions about some of the products she got huffed at and the person helping us acted as if it is common knowledge and that everyone should just know what their products are and how they are used. How dare we ask such simple questions hoping to become more informed kinksters despite several implications that we were vanilla. After getting attitude we said we were just going to keep browsing. the person who was helping us just walked away but as soon as one of their dressed up pals walks into the store they light up and get all chipper and more talkative than before and start showing them items that had been recently put on the shelf. Like a salesperson should do with all their customer, ya know? My gf went to the changing room to try something on and immediately came back out and said we should leave. I tried to reassure her that by law they cannot put video cameras in changing rooms but I wouldn't put it past this place to do something like that. We went to pay for our purchase of some cute things my gf picked out and of course this was again an ordeal, because how dare someone expect customer service looking like plain old vanilla janes and joes. Gosh had I known there'd be a dress code or that you needed to know the secret code words and handshakes to get any service here I would not have come here. Needless to say the items we had been looking at in the backroom that we had been given attitude over, we were able to find online for quite a bit less than the mark up this store put on things. My gf has been quite a happy kitten ever since. In short, the hype about this place is just that. There is nothing that makes this place stand out or above anything more than a goth version of lovers lane with an even worse attitude on customer service. I do have one suggestion and that is maybe try and organize the wares better as I am sure this place in it's current cluttered state is a fire hazard waiting to happen. read more

Noir has been around for so long, it's surprising that it hasn't been reviewed yet. 20+ years in Royal Oak! Anyone looking for something above and beyond a normal measure of kink should check out Noir Leather. They have just about anything and everything concerning "toys", from clothes that would spice up the bedroom to full-out fetishwear and professional BDSM gear. Besides all that, they have a very large selection of accessories - jewelry, belts, buckles, rings, and just about anything else you could think of in that category. The clothing selection is equally impressive; they have a respectable collection of one-of-a-kind tops, bottoms, jeans, and the like... if you get something from Noir, chances are you won't see 10 people on the street with the same thing. I'd suggest checking out their used clothing - it's priced very well, and there's not just clothing for spooky kids. That being said, one star off for prohibitive prices. I understand that a lot of the clothes come from small design houses, but pants at $200+ just aren't worth it, custom or no. Noir is still a diamond in the rough as far as adult oriented stores go. I'll get to my review ... but first a story. So a couple of years ago, I'm dating this guy and after about six martinis, he tells me he really has a thing for dominatrices. I liked him, he had a cool car and I'm an adventurous kind of girl, so I smiled and listened. Turns out he loves chicks in leather, ridiculously high heels and women that boss him around while he performs routine cleaning chores around the house. My kind of guy. Easy enough, I thought. My bathroom needs cleaning, I've got a closet full of too-tall heels, I own more than my fair share of leather pants and the bossiness thing ... well ... ladies ... you get that. No problem. The only issue was that I quickly discovered that guys like this are VERY picky about their fetishes. A little bit of leather wasn't going to be enough. He wanted me to be clad head to toe in the stuff, ala Dita Von Teese. But where to go? Being a newbie to this whole scene, I remembered the Noir Leather ads in the Metro Times. Place seemed like the perfect fit for my nefarious intentions. After all, I had been hearing people whisper "Noir" for years, but had never actually checked it out. So I made my way into Noir Leather, ready to slap down that Mastercard to look like Dita. No price tag would get in my way. It was all or nothing. I had a guy that would clean my toilet with a tooth brush, after all, so that was motivation enough. To say I was let down is an understatement. Yes, I give Noir credit for offering fetish and BDSM gear locally before it was cool to post on Yelp that you were looking for it, but the quality and selection just wasn't there. In subsequent years, I've come to appreciate what my then-beau was after and have found it, but unfortunately, it wasn't in Royal Oak ... or with him. The selection was limited, the displays were dusty, the quality was ho-hum, and it lacked most of the "edge" I expected when I entered. At first -- being a complete beginner -- I thought this is what fetish shops are like. But after seeking out some other fetish stores during business trips to San Francisco, Atlanta and NY, I realized that PVC and dusty chokers alone don't make for good fetish gear. The Internet has really changed availability and expectations now, and Noir hasn't really kept pace with this. So these days, when I want a little leather or rubber in my wardrobe, I'm more apt to go online to Westward Bound or eBay (yes, eBay.) I have a women on eBay that makes me handmade, custom-fit , killer leather corsets and dresses for under $400. Noir just can't match that. I noticed that the Noir website now seems to be focusing on Rock 'n Roll and punk clothing. They definitely learn toward the goth aesthetic, which probably helps them move studded belts with teenagers. But if you're looking for luxury-level fetish wear, I don't see Noir fitting the bill. People who are into fetish fashion want quality, and will generally pay for it. Most of Noir's apparel, I'm sorry to say, can be found at Lovers Lane ... and for about the same price. It's a shame, because I definitely like the idea of having a local place to fit this niche. Fetish-y fashion can work outside of the privacy of your own home, but only if the stuff is very high quality. Simply being one of the area's first and only fetish and alternative apparel stores only gets you so far. You have to have the the goods to back it up. One thing I do want to give Noir a lot of credit for is their continued participation in the community. They are always out there, and their ads still rock, even if they don't always have the product to back them up. So I give them points for their longstanding enthusiasm, and willingness to be on the fringe, before the fringe became fashionable. At some point you just want a good corset and cat ' o nine tails. Unfortunately, I never found that at Noir and had to get something custom-made online from my measurements. For a few months, my house was spotless thanks to fetish boy, and I got turned on to some non-local leather designers that got me the look I was going for. I just wish I could have found the same at Noir. read more

This place is way overrated. Overpriced, super cramped, and the staff walks around like they're the cat's balls. Pretty much everything they offer can be found in greater variety and for better prices elsewhere. Looking for fetishwear and gear? Go online. Looking for toys? Go online, to Lover's Lane or pretty much any other adult shop in the metro area. Looking for cool rockabilly/alternative clothes? Go to the Salvation Army up the block, or check out Etsy. All of these will give you a world more options for cheaper than the expensive crap offered at Noir. My friend and I browsed in here for about 20 minutes, and not once did any of the 3 staff members even make eye contact, much less greet us or offer help. And considering this place is about the size of a walk in closet, they were REALLY going out of their way to ignore us. Don't know what that was all about. This place is where teens who love Hot Topic will shop after they turn 18. More power to them, but to me, it costs too much to look that cheap. read more

Stopped in to pick up a couple of final pieces for my outfit I am putting together for the Theatre Bizarre party next weekend I was helped by Shadow who was great, found what I was looking for and made a couple of helpful suggestions . 3.46 stars. Just so barely rounding up to 4. Noir is an establishment that draws us to the Royal Oak area. It is an awesome place. A well balanced mixture of edgy clothes/lingerie boutique, sex shop, proper-naughty-restraint-source and other "alternative" offerings, the place is so much fun to browse through and explore. You may find yourself also exploring new parts of your own feelings and desires. All this said, we have received quite poor customer service here at times. This was, however, vastly improved with an incredible experience from a dude named James on a recent purchase, who spent probably an hour talking through different things with the four of us and helped make things work. Props to you, James. They sell some pretty serious restraints here, more "extreme" than you'll find in Lover's Lane or places like that. They used to do a lot of their leatherworking onsite, but this has decreased in recent times. Prices are on the high side. But, a lot of the stuff is near-impossible to find anywhere else. Some of the shoes are really gorgeous and awesome and bamfy, and some of the dresses/clothes/corsets are seriously stunning. Most of it is very high-quality as well. So here we have a very high-end boutique with good stuff, refreshingly unusual, and up-and-down customer service. Certainly a place worth visiting. read more

The Yelp 2-star "Meh. I've experienced better." just about sums it up. I had heard about Noir for years from people who frequented DGN's chat rooms, but had yet to experience it for myself. I finally get here and go to the store only to find a lot of dirty (I mean as in actual dirt/dust) items that seem like they haven't sold since the dawn of time. Had someone told me Noir Leather "Museum" I would have said "oh, cool, yeah." Or perhaps had someone said Noir "Weird, old selection of crap" shop, I would have said "Yep, you were right." If you have high expectations, get ready for a high, hard let down. go there now, having read this review, knowing that it's more like a tiny, little museum of stuff that no one cares to buy, but everyone wants to look at. If you've been to any other large adult store or fetish fair, you've seen everything Noir has (and much more at those other places!) Noir, I'm sorry honey, but you need to clean out the cobwebs. I've had many different experiences at the shop with the staff: sometimes they're extremely helpful and comfortable to talk with, and others they barely acknowledge you. Sometimes the cat is the friendliest thing in the building. (She's a little sweetheart and has passed away. RIP) I've been ignored by the staff more often than I've been helped. Other than that, the store is very interesting and unique. It's a bit cramped, but the busy-ness adds to the experience.
