Catch The Train in Morris Plains…read more Morris Plains Station is a small train station on the Dover-NY Penn Line. The station side line goes towards Penn Station in NY and the other line goes towards Dover. This is a great little train station as it offers an enclosed space that is heated or cooled as appropriate for the weather. Private Men's and Women's bathrooms are also available. Timely automated announcements are made about 3 minutes before a train arrival to give you enough time to exit the waiting area at the station and get to the appropriate line. This station remains in heavy use even when there is rain, sleet, and snow. There are no ticket office hours inside of this station, but there are 2 ticket vending machines for your train ride(s) and and 2 automated parking vending machines to pay for your parking space in Lot 1 (station side parking lot). All of these machines are located next to the bike parking located under the large "Morris Plains Station" sign. Parking Lot 1 fills up quickly so be sure to arrive early if you are looking to score a spot here. Just across Speedwell Avenue are restaurants, a bar, pub, dinner, some retail, and a pharmacy. A great convenience when waiting for or getting off of your train ride.

This station is much less crowded than Plainfield Station (next station heading west) and is in a safer area of Plainfield. They have no ticket machines so you must buy your ticket on the train. If you tell the conductor you got on at this station they will not charge you the $5 surcharge for buying it on the train. If you are traveling to New York Penn Station you will have to change trains at Newark Penn Station. The cost to New York is $10 each way. There is an electronic board that announces when (or how long) before the train is arriving. Track 1 goes west and track 2 goes east. There is an underpass to get across the tracks. If you are on the south side (track 2) by the building there is a nice description of the station's history posted on the southwest corner of the building.

An update to the previous review: As of 10/30/2014, there ARE NJT vending machines for tickets, so…read morebuy your tickets before boarding. The ticket machines are only located on the south side of the tracks (where the old stationshouse is). The south side tracks are the Newark-bound tracks. Also, there are some midday trains that now go directly to NY Penn Station, a one-seat ride. If you have a ticket to Newark, you can pay the extra $4 on board without penalty.

I want to give a shout out to Brian who I think might work in security. My son lost his phone on…read morethe ME line when he was going into the city. I could see it traveling farther and farther out when I looked on his Device Manager until I realized it was still on the train when it stopped in Dover. It was after business hours so I didn't know if there would be anyone there who could help. We'd already contacted lost and found. So I drove out there hoping to find someone. I drove to the deserted train yard. Knocked on some doors but nope, nobody there. Got back in my car and drove around a bit more until I saw someone about to leave in one of those small security vehicles. The only person in the area. He stopped and I told him what train he'd been on and that I saw it wasn't going out again that night and asked if there was a way to look on the train. He said he'd go up to see what track it was on and would go through the train but when he came down he had my son's phone! I'm forever grateful to this lovely man! I hope NJ Transit appreciates the care he takes in his job. Give this guy a promotion!

Strangely being from northern NYS where most Jeresy folk head to for…read moregreat day hikes, I find myself going South for some of the best camp spots in the state of Jersey! NYS doesn't have a centralized booking system for campsites like NJ does which makes the, booking, experience so much easier especially for noobs like me. I visited the group camping site at this state park for a large meetup family group camping trip. I passed several solo camp sites down the road leading up to the group camp site and all the sites seemed to be situated nicely along the road side. Working facilities are near the individual camp sites but for the group sites you get the good 'ol fashion out house which I wasn't a fan of but managed to drop it like it's hot as needed right down into the abyss of a hole for the toilet. No showers or working facilities near the group site but you can drive over to one for a hot shower. The best part of this state park is the absolutely awesome astronomy club that has an observatory you can visit and use the super expensive telescopes to see other planets with the guide of an astronomer. The staff at the astronomy club are all eager and delighted to answer questions to all who are curious. Peering through a telescope to see the rings of Saturn is absolutely awesome! If interested the observatory is located within a stones throw from the main park entrance at 333 State Park Road, Great Meadows, NJ 07838. The observatory is free to visit but they do have donation bins there to help support their projects and facility. While this state park doesn't have as many camp sites as other locations I've visited, the astronomy club makes this place an epic visit!
