We have worked with Alicia and team for over a decade. When my husband and I first moved into our home over 10 years ago, we both knew it would be worth our time and marriage relationship to hire an interior designer. We actually went with someone else because a family member used them for a project. After a few months, when things weren't progressing, we decided to look elsewhere. We met Alicia during an event a couple of years earlier, and she had struck us as someone we'd like to get to know. We tucked her business card into a folder. After living in our three bedroom, two bath, 1930s Colonial Revival home designed by Long Beach architect Keneth Wing. We had a multitude of design ideas and 30-pages of details for the direction we wanted, in order to maintain the home's architectural integrity. We initially contacted Ms. Friedmann concerning our long-time, much anticipated home addition and remodel. Utilizing an interior designer was a first for us. Although we already had many detailed ideas we thought it valuable to have a professional designer help us clarify, validate and actualize our ideas in renderings and floor plans. For us, this is a big undertaking of resources, time and money, and Very much wanted to assure keeping the style of our modest 1930s Kenneth Wing designed home. Alicia's professional process began with completing an extensive personality inventory; to not only for her to get more acquainted with our interests and preferences, but to assure we, as husband and wife also better understood and communicated about our vision and expectations for our home addition/remodeling project. Consequently, Ms. Freidmann's thorough process was very helpful in clarifying all our ideas and concerns. Also, early in the process, she was very clear about communicating her services and specifying how the process would proceed, as well as itemizing the payment schedule for her services, making adjustments as we progressed. She and her team expeditiously and unobtrusively photographed and carefully conducted measuring the rooms to be remodeled: kitchen, family room addition, in relation to yard space to be used by the new room addition, bedroom and two bathrooms.. Alicia made us feel very comfortable throughout the process. She is an excellent listener and reflector of our many detailed ideas and needs. She was generous with her time, readily available by phone or email throughout the process, and always answered every phone call and quickly replied to all emails. Alicia and her team were very good at being concerned and provided their best. Alicia then In a reasonable amount of time provided initial design concepts, space planning proposals, 2D floor plans, and elevation drawings. She graciously made adjustments wherever necessary, according to our requests. I just met with her last week and she helped me pick some great paint options and gave me some great ideas for my home that I would not have come up with on my own. We contacted Alicia Friedmann Interior Design to help us with a home refresh. We had been living in our home for over five years and it still didn't feel like "us". We weren't sure what our design esthetic was or what we should do. I found Alicia on Yelp. We used her services to update our living/dining room. The fireplace is original stone from the 1960s. We love it, but it is very large and dated, so decorating in a manner that makes it attractive, rather than obtrusive, is a challenge. Additionally, we bought very expensive leather couches that are lovely, but the color looked completely different in our home than in the showroom. I literally cried when they arrived. Due to the restocking fee, we choose not to return them. These were the two issues Alicia helped address. She gave us one option and we changed our mind in terms of what we wanted, so she created another design option for us that worked very well. Here are the qualities that I appreciate most about her: * She listens to you! In the past I have used designers that had their own vision and did not "hear" yours - she does. * She's very flexible and gives you lots of options within multiple price ranges. * She is extremely punctual. * She's not pushy and works within your budget. * She has a delightful sense of humor and is a pleasure to work with. I hired Alicia to help me decorate my dining room with new furniture and to do a rendering of a design for a fireplace, and it was really a waste of over $800. Some of the many things that went wrong: 1)She has a very strict contract that states that she has a minimum of 30-40% markup for furniture. If the seller does not provide enough of a discount, say, only offers a 15% discount to the trade, you will pay full retail for the item. I found a set of furniture that was custom made, and the seller would only offer a 16% discount. She would not budge on not offering me any discount, even though I was the one that found this furniture. Somehow I just couldn't stomach her making thousands of dollars in profit on merely placing a phone call for furniture that she didn't even find. 2)She has a limited amount of tile that she offers for your use that she is able to apparently get a discount on. She never at any time offered to search for tile at a tile store for my project. I found this completely limiting. I ended up finding pretty much all the material for my project. 3) I still have not been able to get my project done as the contractors' names that I paid for from her as references refused to work on my project. I naively assumed that she had a working relationship with the two (two?!) names that she provided and that they would be cooperative in wanting to do the work for me. I might as well have contacted two random names off the internet. One of the contractors, Bob Kaplan of Kaplan Construction, led me along and wasted my time for well over a month and then completely dropped out before providing a contract. 4) As to furniture and other items, Alicia did purchase a rug for me that I got for a discount, and I was happy with that. Her other attempt at trying to furnish my home was to give me a vague quote on a table that I never saw a photo of from some custom shop that she works with. No photo, no further follow up. I think Alicia and I were not on the same wavelength at all as far as personality and style, but that was the least of our problems as far as I was concerned. I finally ended up receiving a very overpriced rendering for my money that contained some errors. read more

We hired Alicia a few years ago to give us advice on how to structure our ranch style 1950s home with giant rooms. We were really impressed with how knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and insightful she was and I especially like how honest she was.
