I highly recommend the kani salad, I tweak it a bit and add avocado and extra spicy mayo (it's not that spicy) they give you a big portion that you'll be pretty much full with just the salad. Unbelievable dinner tonight at Nisen Sushi! The decor is hip and upbeat. The seaweed salad very fresh. The hot mushroom /salad appetizer was so good that I was dissecting the flavors as I was eating it, wondering if I could recreate it at home! For dinner, I had the 2018 roll that had a pile of fresh warm crab meat on top. There were mango pieces and a dash of purée on top with a dash of what seemed like a wasabi purée. My family and I have been eating at Nisen sushi since they were a small tiny restaurant in Jericho in E. Northport (current location for GreenLeaf Thai.) They have constantly improved and just gotten better and better with time. Their service is so prompt and friendly. They're lunch deals are incredible-so much food for a good price. If you come for dinner I highly recommend sharing some of their appetizers to start the table. Oyster Yaki (fires oyster in garlic sauce) is my favorite, the toro tartar, Kobe sliders, and yellowtail jalapeño are AMAZING. A must try is the warm mushroom salad. And I've never had a roll that didn't taste fresh, and delicious. I recommend for quick fairly priced lunches and a nice sushi date night if you're going for dinner. read more

I came here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch with my co-worker. When we arrived, we were greeted by the host immediately. The decor was nice and the restaurant was spacious. I didn't appreciate that it felt rather cold inside the restaurant, which makes it a little uncomfortable to enjoy the meal. I, along with my co-worker had the three roll sushi off of the lunch menu. I had the spicy tuna, spicy salmon and spicy yellowtail with scallions roll. The sushi rolls were decent, not great. If I were writing this review 5 years ago, I would have given it 5 stars. Nisen Sushi started out as a HOLE IN THE WALL sushi restaurant in Commack on Jericho Turnpike. The portions of fish were huge and always SUPER fresh. They decor was cute and inviting with traditional Japanese Kimonos hung on the wall. It was easily my FAVORITE sushi spot. My family and I were regulars here and we quickly became friends with the owner, Tom. Well the hole in the wall became well known pretty quickly and that is when they moved to the current location in the TJ Maxx/Trader Joe's shopping center. The portions and prices were still excellent and it was still a family-friendly place to eat. And then... about a year or two ago, this place transformed into a totally different animal. It is now super-trendy and glitzy, and EXPENSIVE. A filling dinner for 2 here used to cost around $50. I came here a few months ago and I was barely full at the end of my meal and dinner came to around $110. While the fish is still fresh, the portions have gotten smaller and I would have to say it's no longer family-friendly. Tom is now never to be seen, I doubt he would even recognize us anymore. They opened a location in Woodbury that is pretty much the same. I wish Nisen stayed the way it used to be. In a way, I feel like it kinda sold out (good for Tom, bad for the rest of us). Nevertheless, the food is still good, and I would recommend this place to bring a date if you're trying to impress them and if money is not an issue. read more

Rare moment folks, I will actually "almost" agree with a star rating for a restaurant on Yelp. (NC) Nisen Commack gets 3 stars from me, no more and no less. Here's why: You thought (NW) Nisen Woodbury was super trendy? Come to NC and see it located in a dilapidated strip mall sandwiched like the cream in an Oreo cookie, between a TJ Maxx and a Dollar store. NC tries to be what NW ONCE was, an awesome, expensive, trendy, new world style, fusion sushi joint for the masses...almost successfully bringing Man-hah-'in to Strong Island...until you walked out of the restaurant, opened the door and saw that you were on Jericho turnpike. However, something about the Million dollar renovation of now super trendy NC doesn't quite fit...and that's the exact location of this restaurant in...well...Commack. The good thing is, that they aren't trying to charge you NW prices as the same exact maki rolls in many cases are $4-6-8 cheaper. That's a welcome change...We walked out spending $75 including tip which isn't "too" bad for Sushi let alone a "Nisen" restaurant. NC also tends to attract a much younger crowd, filled with 15-35 year olds as opposed to NW who attracts the Nassau County gold coast divorcee cougars typically between the age of 37 and 53, trying to pickup the young folk, driving their x-husband's SL500s that they scored during their divorce negotiations and mediations. Food Stuffs: - Edamame ---- good salt content, slightly overcooked, but tasted good - Sashimi Deluxe (we had this as our appetizer) ---- tuna and salmon were fresh, striped bass and whitefish were OK, the octopus was good also. - Dix Hills Roll ---- this was by far the best roll there... - Yellowtail and Jalapeno roll ---- you betta like jalapeno...it was decent but very spicy and masked all other flavors in the roll (rice, seawood, yellowtail etc) - Mango Hawaii Roll ---- this was a decent roll, the spicy mango sauce was very sweet, the mango was fresh, and the salmon on the inside wasn't a flavor you'd be able to detect because of the rest of the overpowering flavors Here's one thing that I was NOT happy about. We had a 9pm Opentable reservation for a booth, we arrived at 830 and a table ahead of us who did NOT have a reservation was seated at the booth that we were supposed to be seated at. We also arrived there prior to that group of people as we were standing by the hostess stand. I got in to an argument with the asian hostess who disagreed with the other girl who worked as the hostess, who wanted to seat us in that booth. I sternly told her we had a reservation and that I had a booth request in my res. The asian hostess then told us "we don't sit parties of 2 in booths"...really lady? the FIRST booth had a party of 2 in it, which I pointed out to her, at which point she dismissed and ignored my statement. I have the right mind to give them 2.5 stars and detract them a .5 star because of this nonsense but Yelp wont' allow me to do so. Dammit Yelp. Overall, I think it's worth another visit with my trusted foodie advisor best friend to see what she thinks. For now, I'll keep it as an interesting alternative to the standard run of the mill sushi joints that plague Long stripmall Island. read more

We love Nissen. A nyc style restaurant in Commack nestled between Dollar Tree and TJ Max. Sounds like a recipe for failure especially when there are at least five other sushi places within 5 minutes, but instead it's a massive success. Fresh, fresh fish. Awesome atmosphere. Great service. We love the aged tofu and shrimp/vege tempura to start. Then we've tried most rolls. A stand out is the live scallop sashimi. I dream of it nightly it's sooooo good. Also highly recommend the spicy scallop roll or anything with avacados. They recently expanded to two new locations. We tried the Melville location and we were actually disappointed. Don't judge this place by the others. Come to Commack. Be delighted! read more

I've came here twice with my 2 year old son for lunch. They have great lunch specials. Both times I got the salmon teriyaki bento box! Everything was perfect, size of the meal was great! It's mostly not busy, a bit quiet which is good. Not crowded. Atmosphere is nice, they've got a lot of tables too. The waitresses both times was very nice and attentive. Love it here! I stopped into Nisen Sushi after meeting up and completing a craigslist transaction. My date and I were immediately impressed by the modern decor and the busy restaurant (it was a Sunday evening). We sat at the bar, so we could keep our eyes on the World Cup games. We ordered a couple of rolls and a seaweed salad. The bartender was pretty friendly and made light conversation with us. The seaweed salad looked pretty sizeable and it was very tasty, but low and behold, at the bottom of the dish was FILLER LETTUCE. Who in their right mind throws spinach and cabbage at the bottom of a seaweed salad?! I was truly disappointed by this discovery. The rolls arrived and were plated very nicely. As we made our way through them, I decided they were nicely marinated, but something was off. I distinctly realized that the fish (salmon and tuna) were pureed before they were rolled into sushi. It was like high-class, pretentious baby food. I'm not sure about everyone else, but one of the things I really and truly enjoy about eating sushi/sashimi is the texture of the fish. Nisen took that away from me and it was pretty discouraging. I have certainly experienced better sushi spots and I'll most likely not return to Nisen in the future. The only thing I can say for them, is they have decent prices. But I don't think it's worth it to sacrifice the quality of the food. read more

I think the food is excellent here, but for the most part I order it to go. I mourn the loss of the old unassuming cheesy but quaint pre-revamp Nisen, which was by far my favorite local restaurant to eat at regularly. I stress that since the revamp I have enjoyed all the food I have eaten here, and am not putting it down in any way. That being said, I cannot stand eating sushi in a place that has such a faux NYC lounge vibe, where I fear hidden behind the bathroom door I will find the cast of the Jersey Shore doing lines off of the urinal. In addition I have definitely gotten a snotty rude attitude from the hostesses here before; a small hint, working at a Japanese restaurant in a strip mall in Commack does not give you some elite status to be rude to your customers. So in my opinion Kudos on the food, but I will eat it from the comfort of my home, where I do not have to experience the atmosphere that is not to my liking. read more

I'm not sure what happened last night, but mine and my wife's Chirashi was the worst. The mackerel had an unpleasant odor. We were both hesitant upon taking a bite. That's never a good sign. After taking a bite of the mackerel, we immediately spit it out. Extremely unpleasant taste, salty x 10. WTF moment. The salmon and tuna were also nasty. The texture was totally off. We are still taking about last nights meal. Still in disbelief what we were given. Normally I would say, ok maybe they had a bad night. It's another trendy sushi place on Long Island that serves Americanized rolls with mango and other assorted food items that don't belong in sushi. For people that like that kind of "Japanese" food this is the place for you. FRIED OYSTER ROLLS A hidden gem with no real atmosphere or ambiance but great food and good service meaning you probably wouldn't take anyone here to impress them unless they are like me and could care less where I am as long as the food and service are both great. Their rolls were delicious and I fell in love with the fried oyster roll (sounds gross right?) That is what I thought but woahh it was yummy. This restaurant should be closed down due to health violations, terrible service, dirty food, tables next to the bathroom, over priced poor quality food and ABOVE ALL, the manager is abusive and violent towards his customers. Ripping up money, chasing customers down the street. The staff discussing loudly how someone clogged the toilet and taking the plunger and parading it through the restaurant dripping. The staff not washing their hands, being rude and neglectful to their customers who are paying for very expensive sushi. No matter what you hear, DO NOT GO HERE! read more

I have too say I think we found our new favorite sushi restaurant. The service was on point! The drinks were strong and great. We had the rock shrimp tempura and was excellent and also the shishito peppers. We can't remember which rolls we had but they were all great. We skipped desert for another round of excellent drinks. Ok, so I've been here 3 times and I can honestly say it gets better each time! The first time we were very happy. Nisen was recommended by my brother and it delivered! This past weekend we went and once again it was excellent! I had a watermelon martini, which was delicious. We then did our usual and ordered 5 rolls. We ordered the 2014 Volcano Roll, Hawaii Roll, Scottish Goat, and I cannot remember the others, but I guess I remembered these because they were amazing! The 2014 volacano roll comes with kani salad on top. It was my absolute favorite! That was followed very closely by the Hawaii roll which had mango, and the Scottish goat was filled with goat cheese topped with portobello. This place is great! I've been here on several occasions and it has always been delicious. I admit that when it comes to sushi I rank a little above amateur, but if you saw my stomach you'd know that I rank as professional when it comes to eating. I usually get the Tokyo roll, Alaska roll and some kind of lobster roll. The dish is well prepared and tastes fresh. If you're a wasabi guy like me then you'll be happy with what they give you. The drinks from the bar are usually on the stiff side which works for me, although I think some nights they might not have a dedicated bartender. One gripe is that the last time I was there the server was a little too attentive. It's not cool to be asking if I need something every 2 minutes. It wasn't annoying enough to take a star off. The ambiance is pretty cool inside and the crowd ranges from families, dates, to the who's who of Commack, which should be subititled "Who Cares?" Great place that's worth enjoying. read more

This place has to be hands down my favorite sushi restaurant. Hands down. FIrst of all, when you walk in, the decorum and ambiance are unparalleled. Beautifully designed with dim lighting and a far off bar that is not obtrusive to the diners (with sports televisions - they have it all!) is well layed out. I have been here twice and would love to return as soon as possible. Every sushi roll I've had here, between Maki and Special Rolls are exquisite and so flavorful. Although, a special shoutout must be made to their Edamame appetizer. It's sprinkled with seasalt and tossed with LIME JUICE. Edamame at any other sushi bar (and I've been to quite a few) pales in comparison. It's an absolute must try. read more

My husband took me here for my birthday. I was so impressed by the owner meeting us at the door and welcoming us. He showed us to a table and told us to enjoy our dinner. We really did enjoy it ,the food was fantastic and the drinks are fabulous. The lobster tacos were great and the oysters were also. We had beer from Hawaii and mango martinis . Out of place is how I would describe this restaurant. Nissen strives to be an ultra trendy Japanese hot spot in the middle of strip mall located in what people would call the middle of no where. The sushi, sashimi, and rolls are just average. The portions are not that big at all. In fact that was pretty much a euphemism. The portions are tiny for the price. If you want great value just go to any of Kotobuki's locations. read more

The best sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The presentation and fish are spectacular. The service is quite good too. The sushi chefs are awesome, very friendly and FAST. Prices are normal for sushi, nothing is extremely expensive, but you won't find many rolls less than $5 or meals less than $15. Nisen is always busy at night, so make sure you get a reservation or you will be standing for at least 15 minutes, and there isn't much room for waiting. If you get a chance to go to Nisen, go, you won't regret it. read more

I wish that I could give a full on 0 to this place. I had to almost walk into the kitchen to find my server after waiting 10 minutes in an empty restaurant for espresso she forgot about. The only other table seemed to be arguing with a food runner after getting abandoned mid meal by their server who (along with the rest of the staff) was too busy eating with OVER AN HOUR left til close. Anyone who reads this I hope for your sake you pass. There are plenty of better options with better food and MUCH better service. We recently moved to Fort Salonga, and typed in Sushi on Yelp today to see where we can grab some dinner. Like 20 different sushi restaurants popped up within a 10 mile radius. I randomly chose Nisen Sushi and gave it a shot. Well, needless to say, we won't have to search again. We ordered 5 appetizers and 5 entrees. Everything on the table was made fresh and was absolutely delicious. Excellent service and the ambiance and decor were beautiful. I've been coming to Nisen since they first opened in their old location, across the street from the Elwood movie theater. I've never been to the location in Woodbury, but from what I understand, they're very different. The fish here is always fresh, the nigiri is fairly large, and the rolls are great. The popular Huntington and Volcano rolls are two of my favorites. If you're planning on coming here during the lunch or dinner rush, I'd make a reservation, otherwise you'll be cooling your heels at the bar for a while. Their take-out is quick though, and sometimes that's a better option. read more
