I've now had three treatments with Amy and waited to provide a review. I really, really like Nios. It's moderately priced electrolysis and all of the staff I've met have been very pleasant and accommodating. My technician, Amy, is so kind. We have great conversations and she makes sure I am comfortable every step of the way. Most importantly, I've seen results. As a black woman, with facial hair issues I've tried it all. I've spent over $2,000 on laser and have experienced burn marks and no results because I have highly sensitive skin. I've spent less than 1/4 of that at Nios and I already see fewer hairs growing on my face. I recommend Nios for sure. I haven't had any scarring, and the hair is disappearing. That's a marker of success in my book. I especially recommend Nios if you are a person of color or if you have sensitive skin. It's definitely worth it. read more

Came here with a Groupon and was not a fan of this facial at all. I'm giving it two points because everyone was so nice, but the experience overall was not what I was looking for. This location in particular gives doctors office vibe - it's very chaotic, and you can hear people talking from inside the room where your facial takes place. My technician asked about my skin concerns, and I told her I wanted to feel more glowy and less dull and was having trouble deciding between either the anti-aging or aqua facial. She said she'd customize it to my skin, but what happened next was mostly just a lot of irritation. She did a chemical peel on me that left my skin feeling dry and irritated. I was hoping for some hydration, but we moved on to extractions and then did some kind of electromagnetic thing to my skin that felt bad after the mask. She did put what was supposed to be a hydrating mask on my face, but with everything else she did I still left this facial feeling dry and irritated. I've had plenty of facials before, and the extractions for this one were so, so painful. I had red marks on my face for days afterwards. I will not be back here. Come at your own risk. read more

Anyone who's had electrolysis knows that time is money. Slimy manager, slow, inexperienced practitioner. My previous electrolysis woman retired, so I found Nios by researching reviews of places in Brooklyn (Mistake #1! See at bottom.) They ask specifically if you want to book someone experienced, and I said yes! It even meant that I had to wait 2 wks instead of coming in the next day. Well, my appt comes and they put me with someone w less than 2 months experience and not yet certified. They acknowledged that it was their mistake and said I could reschedule. Unfortunately I couldn't make another afternoon, and had an event approaching. *** She was SO SLOW that she, *quite literally* removed TWELVE HAIRS in 30 min (and that's including the three free "test" ones.) at $85...*** I was really disappointed and went back to the Internet to look for other places, when lo and behold I see that they have an incredibly cheap Groupon. Stupid me, I paid $85 for 30 min because I trusted the reviews I researched and didn't go straight to Groupon. Long story short, I called and explained what had happened with the booking and how disappointed I was. I still wanted to use them going forward ( electrolysis can take years of consistent treatments.) and asked if I could get the Groupon and book with a sr practitioner. I have mixed feelings about this place. I arrived on the day and time of my appointment and the receptionist told me my appointment was the day after. Although I had confirmed on the phone it's on Wednesday 5th. After checking with the receptionist, I realized my next appointment (a month after) had also been moved to two days after and I was also not informed. The men secretary is also very sassy, and doesn't say hi, bye, nor thank you. He just yelled at me "you have to fill in a form". But very nice esthetician. Overall I won't go back. Was not impressed with Nios. Came in for hair removal along my hairline with a Groupon. The waiting room was great (clean bathroom, charging station, etc) and the receptionist offered me water and to hang my jacket. However, the treatment room was not as comfortable. It was completely bare and felt sterile in a bad way. There was nothing on the walls and just a desk with computer and equipment in the corner and a few other pieces of equipment scattered throughout. The lighting was dim and didn't feel good enough for treatment. The chair they had me lay down in was completely unstable, which they warned me about, but made me feel like I was about to fall off the entire time. It basically allowed me to lay flat but the hinge was broken so it tilted pretty freely in every direction. Very uncomfortable. Regarding the actual treatment, I was never given a mirror to show exactly where I wanted the hair removed, which in retrospect I wish I had asked for because afterwards it was hard to even tell what had been treated and I ended up not seeing permanent results at all, which makes me think they may have just not treated the exact areas I wanted. This was a touch up treatment, so it should have been more noticeable of a difference than the first of 5 or 6, but I saw no change at all. read more

Their front desk staff have catered to every need/request I verbalized, and their facility is hygienic as well as professional. When it comes to the electrologists, you really need to sample the service each provides to understand which one is the best match for you - some are indisputably better than others. If you want my recommendation; I have the highest regard for their Russian electrologist named JANE. She continually demonstrates sensitivity toward me and my experience while prioritizing my verbalized and anticipated needs first. Located on the 3rd floor in a nice, tall building on 57th street, close to Columbus circle. The inside is nothing special. Typical office look. Everyone is very polite and professional though. A secretary will be sitting at her desk and will greet you right when you walk in. I came for the electrolysis, for my eye brows. I actually found out about them through groupon too, which was an amazing price. Typically a half hour electrolysis is $72 there (however, that's super steep for electrolysis - yeah right would anyone with value for money and knowledge of typical electrolysis prices pay that), however the Groupon was more than half price, so definitely worth it. Make sure to tip from the original price though. Anyway, my eyebrows look great. I am coming back in 3 weeks again since I ordered the two 30-minute sessions, and as you know, permanent hair removal takes a few extra sessions. read more

Do not let them take your money. After three consecutive bad experiences-- and hundreds of dollars lost-- I cannot in good faith recommend this place to people who need electrolysis. I just had to cut an appointment short because the electrologist was moving so incredibly slowly that my money was being wasted. An area of my face that should have taken ten minutes to clear was taking over 45 minutes, leaving me with 60/70% of the area untouched. The time before that, I asked the electrologist to mainly prioritize my upper lip and chin and to "take other areas if you think you have enough time" to which she said she had plenty of time. Lo and behold, the hour is up and she didn't even touch my lip or chin, just every other area except for what I specifically asked for. The time before THAT, the electrologist cranked up the settings so high that I had the most painful electrolysis experience of my life-- this is speaking as someone who has had it done for years. This is the third consecutive issue I have had, and have had several more in the past, and these are very expensive mistakes to be made. I encourage anyone considering Nios to seek out other electrologist, or at minimum ask for a trial session to see if your electrologist is experienced enough. read more

My electrolysis journey started with Nios, so I will forever be grateful to them. I lived on 56th & 9th at the time, so it was right next door and they are pretty flexible with times (if you don't mind seeing different estheticians). But since moving and trying out other locations, I think I am ready to give a detailed review. PROS: -They operate well into the evening and even on the weekends -They have packages so that you can save some money -Kim is a sweetheart -They don't try to push products or services on you! That is MAJOR for me CONS: -They're expensive. like $130 ish for an hour expensive -Sometimes they can turn the heat/current up too high, so you may get darker scars -I think they underestimate how long your journey will take. I started here so I was really under the impression that I could be done within 8 months. After moving and trying other locations, my expectations were leveled and I now know that even for a chin/neck area, it can take up to 2 years (with weekly appointments). Tip #1: if you're a Black woman with a low tolerance for pain and you're worried about scarring (especially on your face), I would suggest booking with Rolanda. She is also Black, she is knowledgeable, she recommends the right products and she is fun to talk to. Most of the people there are skilled and know what they're doing. But I would definitely recommend her Tip #2: GO REGULARLY. especially if you're tackling hair growth on your face. you're only hurting yourself if you skip sessions. Kim at the reception desk is really cool and can work with you if you need to reschedule. Once you start going regularly, your session times will eventually decrease. Tip #3: Be specific, and book extra time to be safe. The estheticians are usually scheduled for back to back appointments. So they can sometimes only work within that 15 minute window, even if you have 30 minutes worth of growth. If it's helpful in the beginning ask for a mirror so you can guide them to focus on the areas you want. That way they aren't focusing on the wrong areas and wasting time (aka your money). Tip #4: don't pluck in between. just don't. Bottom Line: If you can afford it (since most people living in that area are not broke), I would recommend trying Nios. Its not the fanciest location you will ever visit, but they are clean and good at what they do. Be patient. But also, don't be afraid to try out other locations. Bonus Tip: Try purchasing Numb Master, which is a potent numbing cream for those of you with a low pain tolerance, like myself. $20 on Amazon. Generously apply it 30 minutes before your next appointment and you will find it to be a lot less uncomfortable. read more

I got electrolysis twice at this place, with two different people. The first time was great, effective and not crazy painful. The second time the lady was late, it was the most painful electrolysis I've ever had, and I was more swollen than normal right after. Then I broke out for the next week and a half!! I've never broken out from electrolysis before, but this was insanely painful and frustrating, it made me wonder if they had a dirty needle! It's sad because the other lady was fine, but if they have people who do such bad work, I strongly discourage going here!! read more

This place!!!! It's been a few days after my first session and I had very minimal swelling or scabbing. I followed directions and three days out my skin is looking awesome! My electrologist, Maura, who is an absolute gem!! was super gentle and careful enough to get very hair but was also speedy enough to finish during my session's timeframe. With her patience, electrolysis was way less painful than laser for me and I'm hoping it works better too. I had a fabulous first experience and look forward to going back and finishing the rest of my hair-free journey! This place deserves 5 stars and all the technicians seem awesome. Go here! I've been going to Nios since December 2017 and have had about 6hrs of electrolysis on my chin/under, upper lip, and parts of cheek (approx six 55min appointments every few weeks). I do not really notice a difference. In fact I initially felt like I was getting hairier bc of the electrolysis and was convinced that my hair was probably being plucked instead of zapped. But I know I have to be patient, so I'm going to continue with electrolysis. However, I'm not so sure I'm going to continue w Nios. Great things: scheduling, excellent customer service, and friendly staff. Not so great: customer service. The electrologist I was seeing (Tamari) no longer works there -- and I wasn't really given direct confirmation of this when I was rescheduled to meet w a new one. Instead the staff member who called to confirm my appointment simply shared that my electrologist would not be available for my appointment, but my appointment would still stand as someone would take her shift. Why not tell me she's not coming back at all? This way I could assess if I really want to continue w this spa, and or ask thorough questions about who will be working with me. I had my 55 minute appointment with the replacement electrologist (Rolanda). She was friendly and courteous and maybe I'd return but, and this is a very big BUT, she by no means completed the job I had been paying for the last few months. After getting home I examined my face a little closer and can see and feel hairs on my jawline, cheeks, chin/under. I'd say about 10% of the job was not finished. I also noticed that she worked at a slower speed than my usual electrologist but I was hoping for the best. read more

I just finished my 2nd one yesterday and I will continue going here because the experience was so pleasant. I had never had electrolysis before but both ladies that helped me were very friendly and made sure I was comfortable during each of the appointments. They work at a good pace and I was surprised during my first appointment that she had already completed the areas I came in for with time left over to do other areas. (Which is great!) I definitely recommend this place and will be back for sure since I have much to be done lol. I also will continue to book Robin as she was personable and made the time fly by. I have a really long story of terrible things done by Nios, particularly Lilli. Anyways, I don't have the time to type out my whole story so I'll just leave the most upsetting part: I now have a huge collection of keloid scars where my hair follicles used to be. One bump per follicle. I have a collection of little bumps all over my armpits and toes. If I flatten out my toes (the way it is when you stand on the ground), you can see a bunch of raised keloid scars even from a considerable distance. I'd rather just have the hair back. At least normal humans have hair. Now it just looks even worse than having hair, because like what the hell are these bumps? Of course, Nios DID NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM warn me that scarring was even remotely possible from such a procedure. When I reached out to them asking them for advice on how to manage my complications, they avoided all responsibility and tried to pretend that such complications were impossible. My skin used to be completely smooth and I never had any bumps in any of these areas before electrolysis. read more

TLDR Nios left me with scarring, DO NOT GO THERE. Nios was my second electrolysis experience, and my worst. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Before moving to NY I'd had about 2-3 months of treatment so I knew what to expect. My first appointment was fine, so I booked several more. But at the second one I could feel plucking and after each appointment I was left bleeding. I know to expect some slight scabbing--this was not that. I had a few very large scabs after and a lot of bleeding during the appointment, which I know should not happen. Because Nios is so focused on efficiency (more clients=more money for the owner), I never had a full area treated in one session. I saw very little progress after several treatments. The worst part is that I have been left with permanent scarring. They'll tell you that some scarring is normal and that it'll fade. But It's been months since my last appointment and my chin still has large patches of scars that haven't gone away. Now I'll have to also have that treated which will cost me more money. I was attracted to Nios initially because of their prices, and while I'm paying more per session now I know that'll end up saving money in the long run since I'm actually seeing progress after 3 sessions. read more

I've had 6 treatments at Nios, 5 of them with Robin, and my final treatment with Maura. After these 6 treatments, I saw absolutely no difference in my hair growth, not even a small change. But I know its a slow process, so I was hanging in there. Anyway, both women were very nice and knowledgeable. However, my session with Maura was a COMPLETE disaster. She spent the first 15-20 minutes of my 45 minute session trying to figure out the proper setting to use for my hair removal. She only got halfway through the area, because time was up and she had clients waiting. Even though during my sessions with Robin, she would cover the entire area in 45 minutes or less. I tried to schedule another session with Robin the same week, but she was all booked. So I looked elsewhere for electrolysis treatments. After much searching, I found a place closer to home (in Brooklyn) and almost half the price of Nios! It was only after my session at this new place that I realized that Robin wasn't zapping the hairs properly, and would end up PLUCKING the hair out. I only realized this after going to the new electrologist, who would zap and NEVER pluck out the hairs. I didn't once feel a hair being pulled from my skin. But with Robin, I ALWAYS felt my hair being plucked from my skin. Sadly, I didn't know any better. After only ONE session at my new electrolysis place, I've noticed a tremendous difference compared with my sessions at Nios. It is safe to say I will NOT be returning to Nios. If I wanted my hair to be plucked I could do so elsewhere for far less money. read more

This place is like no other ! The staff are friendly and place is always spotless. Robin always goes the extra mile, I thought it was because I was special (jk) but she's like that with client I noticed. It's so organized most of the time even on their rush hours you barely see anyone in the waiting area. As far as the service it's self it speaks for itself. Since I'm pushing thirty, I have no problem talking about hair removal, especially if it helps someone. Like many of "my people," I don't have much hair, but what hair I have is visible. So, I've been in the fight since the day in 6th grade when the school bell rang, and Michael Rappucci (if you're reading this, Mike, go fuck yaself) jumped up on a desk and screamed, "JIA HAS A MUSTACHE!" in front of the whole school. So as a preteen, I bleached my hair (AND skin) yellow from the box. I learned how to pluck my eyebrows from a book. I gingerly used rusty disposable Bics lying around the house because I didn't know better. At summer camp, I learned about shaving cream, and how other girls have mad hair all the way up to their thighs and beyond! Went through a Nair phase, but got sick of the smell and the mess. Waxing didn't give enough bang for the buck, and the home kits were a sticky joke. Laser intrigued me until I heard it only lasted ten years; I wondered who would pay so much for an ultimately temporary effect. I always knew electrolysis was the only permanent option, but regarded it sort of as science fiction on the counts of pain and cost. Last October, I found a coupon on Yelp for Nios. Like everyone else, I thought I could go for an hour or two and be cured for life, and figured it was time to throw down. The office was a lot dimmer and more yellowed than the pics here, but clean enough. A receptionist with a wily smile sat me down with water, low fat Reese's candies, and crappy yoga mags. My soon-to-be electrologist came out. In her presentation of the staff's certifications and the art of electrolysis, she made it clear that the procedure requires repeated visits for 4 to 12 months before it's over. Facing a commitment of hundreds to perhaps thousands of dollars over the next year, I didn't even flinch. My mind was already made up; I decided it would soon pay for itself, if not in exact dollars, then in time saved. Thermolysis - a brief current of electric heat shot down the hair shaft with a super-thin, sterile, flexible probe - commenced. Some hairs hurt more than others, but it hurt so good. My eyes teared with joy as hairs died left and right. The first day, a significant area was zapped bare to good conversation and a background of Incan music, complements of Pandora on her laptop. Later, she treated the area with witch hazel and a special natural foundation. I paid with my ATM card instead of a preferred card card I don't carry (for my own good!) because they needed a physical card (fair enough). Handed her a tip, and looked forward to the next time. It was always easy to set up appointments because of her flexible hours. Even at 7 p.m., I was never her last client on any visit). I'm not sure when it happened, but the next sessnions got less and less revelatory, and not necessarily because the novelty had worn off. She started kind of pausing while talking, and even if she would get back to it after several seconds, all I could think of was the number of hairs neglected times $110 (price of an hour) divided by seconds in an hour... She also included ample "cooling off" phases of witch hazel application into our time. It's not that she slacked, per se, but I started feeling that I needed someone a little more hard core. If ever I flinched, she would flinch too and apologize until I started feeling bad for HER! She'd also talk about how she never had time to do anything and didn't have bathroom breaks, and I worried in a general way about her happiness, though of course we all wish we had more time in our lives. The deal breaker happened after my penultimate visit, when a hard little lump materialized up way under my skin. I knew it was most likely a follicle reacting deep underneath. When I mentioned it, she brought in a young guy with my permission (the head doctor, I guess). I'm a big girl; I wasn't shy about him prodding at my patchy flesh...but I became severely annoyed when they both started speculating that it was a pre-existing thing, because I KNOW it was not. I was displeased with how quick they were to disassociate themselves from the situation, as if they were already avoiding accusations I never made. After that, she said that seven minutes were already on the clock from the b.s. consultation that should have been free. Over it, I said we should just quit at fifteen minutes, during which nothing really got done. She and the doc both stood over me to ring me up, and I couldn't help exclaiming, "FIFTY DOLLARS?" They told me shorter sessions cost more. Feeling cornered, my graceless response was to stiff on tip and back out of there like a sweaty lobster while they wished me happy holidays in a weird, defeated way. I think that some/all of the reviews of Nios thus far are shill, but I came here any way, because their website was very reassuring. If you need some "work" (i.e. electrolysis), this is the place to go. Here were my main concerns when I was considering whether or not I should have this done: 1. Is the place clean? 2. Is the person experienced and professional? 3. Is this going to cost me an entire paycheck? 4. Is this going to hurt like hell? This place is so clean and the room that it's done in is hospital-grade clean. It's actually in a spa so the entire place has a feeling of serenity and tranquility. Second, Robin was my practitioner and she was completely professional and answered all of my questions thoroughly. The next day she even called me to see how I was doing. Also, the Nios practice is overseen by an actual MD. In terms of price, I compared electrolysis and laser and I definitely think that electrolysis is less expensive. Also, they gave me a 35% discount because I mentioned Yelp! Now, in terms of pain, blasting your hair follicle with some electricity isn't exactly a walk in the park, but pain is totally relative. I thought it was manageable and minimal. I am deathly afraid of needles and I was able to go through it without a hitch. So far so good. I tried my hand (umm face) at laser and after paying a bucket load for treatments, I was still rocking a stace! So at the suggestion of a friend, I opted to try electrolysis. Being that this is NYC, I was dreading paying for more pricey treatments, so when I saw the deal on Bloomspot I grabbed it. And being from NYC, I walked in expecting either half assed treatment or push for buying more. Not the case at Nios, they are extremely professional but not in a snobbish way (which I'm always grateful for). I had my consult with Robin, who walked me thru the process and answered all my questions. She's easy to get along with and I love that she tells me things like, 'it's your face so if you don't like, you do it'. In other words, there's no pressure to do more treatments! It's about $50 (or even less) for 15 minutes, so if it's just a 'clean up' it's a pretty good deal. Also I appreciate that she talks to me during treatment so I don't focus on any pain involved (it's not 'that' painful but I'm a whimp). I've done two treatments so far - 3 weeks apart- and for me the hair is growing in lighter which makes me quite the happy camper. Hmmm...I guess it's time for my version of Nios reality. Even though there are only a handful of reviews, they're all five star, so why not give this place a try? Yep, that's what got me in the door. I also agree with other reviewers that the place is very clean and professional--exactly what you'd want from a business that would be electrically needling you soon after arrival. Given that I had electrolysis, without issue, previously, the 'test spot' seemed unnecessary and I agreed to not have one. I mean, how different could it be given that I had had electrolysis just a few months prior? Well, let's just say it can be a LOT different. The gist of my long windedness is this: I was SCARRED by this procedure. I had my stomach done for an hour and that was back in the third week of October. Here we are in January and I STILL look like I have some kind of rash (i.e. scarring) at every insertion point. On top of that, many of the hairs that were removed are now growing back?! I'm pretty confident that, over time, I will be able to fade the rash-like scarring effect of this treatment (thank goodness I only had one treatment), but based on my experience I can't recommend this establishment. If you do decide to give it a try, and you're a whitey-von-whitey like me, well, make sure you get a spot treatment and then wait an appropriate amount of time to see the effect. Had I thought this were necessary for myself I would likely have avoided my present situation. I think it would behoove Nios to make 'test spotting' mandatory so that others have the best opportunity to avoid the negative experience that I've had. read more

I never had electrolysis before. I read their website and went for my free consultation (it was in depth and not rushed or fast) which was very clear and pretty much reflected what I had already read on the internet for the good and bad of electrolysis. I did do a patch test and waited two days and then decided to remove all the hair from my arm pits via electrolysis. Robin was my electrologist, she was very informative and straight forward as to what to expect. Their technolgy for performing electolysis is new and most up to date from according to the comparison research I did on the internet. I will be going back to Robin for sure. She worked very quickly and she had a great bedside manner. The actual procedure didn't really hurt, just a little uncomfortable which I figured it would be for a sensitive area. Robin tried her best to make me comfortable. The swelling went down within an hour and a half and I expect to have about 4 or so more sessions or so as I don't have as much hair in the area. I have blonde hair so electrolysis was my only permanent hair removal option as I tried laser and it didn't work for me. The pricing is pretty fair considering laser is a lot more and also takes alot more sessions and a lot of $ to get results. This office was clean and comfortable, exactly what you see in the pictures. I do recommend this place. From reading other reviews, I think it is important that you have the free consultation and take a few moments to let your electologist know a bit about your skin type (that's what i did) and make a list of questions to ask before you get there so that you have knowledge on your side (as in anything you do). Also to understand that just like laser, this is a permanent hair removal and you WILL have some sort of skin reaction- this is just the process of having electrolysis, not the fault of the eletrologist. I think that if your skin reaction subsides in a reasonable amount of time (versus a lifetime of hairiness), then this is well worth it! read more

Very positive experience and decently priced! I recommended to all! I went in for consultation, and the place and ambiance are very comforting and relaxing. The staff is very professional and explained every step along the way (and followed up with me later on to see if I had any questions). The rooms are VERY clean and you can tell that they really take care of the tools and equipment they use. If you are completing between a laser hair removal and electrolysis, I would definitely go with electrolysis as it really is the only one that is proven to work in the long run. Very friendly and welcoming! I've been to other electrolysis places where they literally shame you for tweezing (yes I know how bad tweezing is, but still I don't think I should be defending myself while almost in tears) but all staff here is so understanding and nice and I never ever feel uncomfortable there. So easy to book an appointment and convenient to public transportation. Highly recommend! Note- you really need to commit to getting rid of the hair. Expect to come every other week (or more or less depending on your situation) but you will start to see results eventually! read more

The salon is clean and it's an efficiently run business. I am not sure if it is electrolysis technicians in general or just this place but I left my last appointment (of 3) experiencing so much attitude and rudeness from the staff and technician. I felt like she was a lot more aggressive with her treatment compared to my 1st visit. Maybe it was because my appointment was the last one of the day and they wanted to go home but if you don't want to stay so late don't book appointments so late. While my first experience there was fine the next 2 were just mediocre and I will be looking for a new electrolysis spot. I found Nios through yelp reviews (where I find everything in my life haha) and I must say I was really pleasantly surprised by the experience. I was a little scared of the whole idea of permanent hair removal at first but after my consultation with Mary I definitely felt at ease. I was happy that they let me do a little free patch test so I could see if I wanted to take the plunge. While the treatment did hurt a little, overall it was completely worth it. I had a 30 minute session for $72 and I know it will save me money in the long run.
