Oily 1/2 portions of Chicken Pad See Ew and Pork Pad See Ew
    Michael R.

When a restaurant runs a marketing special to attract customers, it doesn't provide them the opportunity to cut corners too keep their bottomline and mislead the consumer. That's what was my experience with Ninethai Kitchen on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. Ordering from Uber, where the customer support is as inconsistent as their service, and reputation, Ninethai offered a special for Buy One Get One on Pad See Ew. So, what they elected to do, was load up on the oil, and provide portions ONE HALF the regular size. Therefore, they were providing the same total portion over 2 items, rather than two full portions. The quality of the food was poor, drowned in oil. There was very little protein (meat, pork, shrimp, etc- you choose) and vegetables, let alone noodles. When a consumer engaged in such practices, they likely use low quality ingredients- ANYTHING to increase their profit. It's EXTREMELY MYOPIC for ANY business. How could I ever trust or recommend this establishment? Side it's Christmas, I'm giving them 2 stars for their inedible food, and deceptive business practices. They really deserve 1 star, based on this experience. And, certainly, they don't deserve your patronage. Order elsewhere.

It appears that a majority of the reviews on the Nine Thai Kitchen Yelp page are for a previous occupant of this space, Chez Novak. Must have been special, but its memory is wasted on the current southeast Asian inhabitants who have taken the cuisine in a significantly different and delicious direction. The dining room is small, with room for only 22 chairs. Lots of houseplants and reminiscences of Phuket. Friendly and attentive management actively engaged with customers. The owner is the chef. His family runs the front of house, but he delivered my Drunken Noodles with Chicken to me steaming hot from the wok. Broad rice noodles, mixed with pieces of tomato, broccoli, green and red pepper, onion, basil leaves and lemongrass, with medium Thai chili heat that made my nose run as expected. It was very good. It was cool to be back in my old neighborhood (26th & Brown). Things have changed for the better since the end of the last century. Girard Avenue has a nice peoples' vibe with lots of diverse culture and family streetlife. Harper's Ice Cream is right next door. My next stop.

Not nearly as good as my local spot Chaaba. Passable from a Thai standpoint and descent price point.

Great place! So cute , owner is very kind and the food is so good!! It's a very small place but the food is much better and more inexpensive than some high end Thai places in my experience. They were not afraid to add a lot of spice, but it was perfect for me (if you do not like spice I would recommend getting a lower number than you would think). Overall great place, authentic food, fresh and good quality. Would very much recommend.

I cannot express how much I enjoyed dining here last night. I remember reading the reviews prior to coming here and thinking to myself, "wow, these reviews seem really genuine and personal, especially with regard to the chef, Chef Mark..." I was not let down a bit! Chef Mark greeted us with such warmth and made sure we were accommodated even though we didn't have a reservation. The ambiance is incredible here -- ONLY good vibes!! The music and the energy make you want to spend the entire evening there, to be honest. And the food was exquisite. It really feels like you're dining at Chef Mark's house or something. I had escargots (for the first time!) and the Cornish hen with sweet potato. Cooked & seasoned perfectly -- simple but a delight. I will definitely return for a good time!!

Chez Novak's is a cozy Brewerytown BYOB with way too low prices, delicious French/Carribean food, a neighborhood feel, eclectic decor and the nicest owner you will ever meet. Nothing makes me happier in life that saying to the waiter: "We'll have the whole menu". With 3 other people, you, too can achieve this happiness, for the reasonable price of about $40 each (with tax and tip). The Prix Fixe is one of the best deals in the city for the quality of food- $25 for an appetizer and entree. I like that dessert is not included because I'm usually a "split a dessert between 4 people" person. The food was all delicious, but we really loved the shrimp (you're going to want to sop up all the sauce it comes in) and the mergez sausage entrees, and the meat pâté, escargot appetizer. We got the jerk chicken entree with seitan, which was very good. For dessert, we enjoyed the cocholate fondant cake and the mango mousse martini was very interesting (we were split on whether we liked that or not). The place is small, so call ahead for reservations. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're in the neighborhood, or looking for something different. Their website says brunch is coming soon and we also heard rumors of a back patio and DJ after parties after dinner service ends, so will have to go back for that...

What a wonderful addition to Brewerytown! My husband has been dying to try it and we decided to go last minute on a Wed. On Wed, they have a deal for $20 including an appetizer and an entrée. I think this is a great way to try the menu. The menu is small but had a really great variety of options. My husband and I have vastly different palates/preferences than each other and it was nice there were dishes of interest to us. I ordered the stuffed avocado app and for dinner, had the coconut curry shrimp over rice. The avocado app consisted of two halves stuffed with a spread. The complementary crusty, warm bread was the perfect accent. Initially, I wasn't sure how I felt about the app, but by the time I started the 2nd avocado, I was totally head over heels. So delicious. My entrée had the perfect amount of food, two jumbo shrimp with a large scoop of rice over the coconut curry sauce. I mixed it all up and it was delicious. It was a little spicy, but very tolerable to me. Darn, I wish I hadn't eaten all of the bread before this dish came out! At the end of the meal, I had a Turkish coffee. It was delicious and a great way to end the meal. The chef came out to say hello and he was so nice. He told us that on Friday nights, at the end of the night, they put on good music and have fun. Our server was sweet, too. Overall, it was a great experience!

Chez Novaks is an affordable, unique, price-fixe French dining experience that should not be missed by foodies and adventurists alike. Apparently, there's live music at night too! Must get: soup (with fish), chicken, warm apple pie, tiramisu Meh: duck and terrine, grilled avocado Missed out: shrimp and fish It is always a wonderous occasion when I hear about a hole-in-the-wall establishment run by a passionate owner with an emphasis on food and great service. While each table may be lit by a different lamp and the overall decor makes you contemplate on the global theme, the dishes are always constant and delicious. There's a price fixe ($25) for either app+main, or main+dessert. My personal recommendation is to order the former, and purchase desserts to save you a few dollars. During your dinner, you'll be greeted by the amicable Chef Evans, who clearly has a special place in all of the local favorites' hearts and guts. The menus may not change over time, but they are tried and true. Of the meals, I personally loved the squash soup (definitely get the fish add-on for free), the spicy chicken and the lamb sausage. The plating overall is simple but elegant and the flavors marry well with glaze/sauces. The chicken is an absolutely must-get and the lamb sausage incredibly tender and juicy. I was not a fan of the grilled avocado or the terrine, as neither brought the same charm or appeal as the other favorites. Given the plate sizes are small/medium, I highly advocate getting the desserts, as they are made in house and worth shaving a few ounces from your wallet and into your gut. Of note, there is ample street parking, which is free after 6pm. Overall, this is a wonderful spot to bring a date or friends. It's BYOB and affordable. If you like a quiet, romantic date night, it may be challenging due to space confinement, but you'll have great time nevertheless. Food: 5 stars Service: 4-5 stars Ambiance: 3-4 stars (can be loud) Price: 5 stars

Our staff were always looking out for us, and making suggestions and recommendations throughout our entire meal, and even helping us with some tips to better enjoy our meal (they saw me sweating in response to the Thai spice). Definitely made this a top-notch experience. Ambience here is great! Love places with *real* greenery indoors and a lot of natural light, like this place, and seats and tables were spread out sufficiently such that there was a nice background chatter without feel too infringed upon by other conversations. We ordered a good variety to share. The spare ribs and the glass noodles dishes were amazing! Everything came out as ready, but it was on a good cadence such that we were enjoying things as they were ready, hot and fresh. I'm no expert on legitimacy of flavors and dishes, but honestly this feels like the most legit stuff I've had in the Thai wheelhouse in a while. To boot, even though we said no to dessert because we had other plans, they came with a candle on a plate to still share birthday wishes. A nice touch! Definitely a fancy occasion kind of place in my books, but I'd definitely make a return trip on another occasion!

KenScale: 8.25/10 Visit: April 2026…read more One restaurant in Philadelphia that I had wanted to visit for a long time was Kalaya, which was featured in the Chef's Table documentary on Netflix in 2024. I was moved by the personal story of the chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon in the show, and of course my wife Jun and I would never say no to some delicious Thai food. On our recent trip to Philly to celebrate our anniversary, Jun and I finally got to check out Kalaya (which is named for the chef's mother) on a rainy Sunday for lunch before driving back home. We were very pleased with the lunch at Kalaya, which in our mind really showcased the Thai spicy flavor well. The menu at Kalaya features Southern Thai dishes inspired by the chef's family history. The colorful display of the dishes stood out throughout our meal, but more importantly we also really liked the spicy flavor that felt genuine and soulful. The cute flower-shaped Shaw Muang dumplings with ground chicken were highly recommended by our server and the kick from the Thai chili set the right tone right away. We were also fond of the poached shrimp and cabbage salad with coconut cream (Yum Kalum Bplee) for the delightfully crispy texture. For the main dishes, we ordered one stir fry and one curry. If you have to order just one dish at Kalaya, I can't recommend the colossal crab stir fry with egg (Pu Pad Pong Karee) enough. Served with jasmine rice, this dish offered complex flavor of spicy, salty, sour and sweet that was quite unlike anything I had encountered in a while. As Jun and I were savoring this awesomeness, I wished that I could've eaten this every week. The goat and lamb curry (Gaeng Pae), served with pickled cucumbers and coconut turmeric rice, was also impressive, with rustic curry broth that suddenly hit my tongue with spice blend. Despite that powerful impact on my palate, I couldn't stop myself from enjoying the curry, especially with the coconut turmeric rice that neutralized the curry's spicy kick somewhat. We also shared a side dish of stir-fried local mushrooms (Hed Pad Kratiam) that was solid as well. We were running out of room in our stomach after cleaning up the savory dishes, so we settled with ordering a Thai iced coffee to go before hitting the road. Not surprisingly, Kalaya is a very popular restaurant in the Philly dining scene so getting a reservation in advance is essential. I was a bit nervous on our visit as we were running rather late (by around 30 minutes) from picking up our car from the parking lot, yet the restaurant was gracious enough to honor our reservation. The bright and lively dining space offered quite a fitting background to the character of the dishes. There is a full bar with Thai-inspired cocktails and concise wine list designed to complement the Thai spices well. Kalaya definitely lived up its hype as one of the most important restaurants in Philadelphia; Jun and I were glad to have visited and would be more than happy to come back for our next visit to the city.

So you might stumble across info for the best times to secure a walk-up reservation and they'll tell you to arrive at least by 10:30am Thursday through Saturday as Mawn opens at 11am. But let me tell you how I pulled up in front of Mawn at 10:40am on a Thursday and there was already a line of about 15 people!! Mind you, these people have PEOPLEZ as quite a few were holding spots in line for others in their party who could now casually stroll up to the line since their spot was secured by their people. I'm telling you have a game plan! If I knew then what I know now I probably would have got there at least by 9:30, seriously. My party got waitlisted as soon as we were just one person away from entering the restaurant and we had to wait for another 40 minutes. Fortunately it was a nice day so we just walked around the neighborhood and came back and got in. It's a small quaint place that only seats about 28 people. You'll feel like your visiting your favorite relatives home. You'll glance around at the other guest and feel like WOW i'm one of the few who finally made it into one of the most coveted highly acclaimed restaurants in Philly! Now let me see if it lives up to the hype! haha! I started out with the pear melon salad. It was light and refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed the citrus notes and the pear slices. I would have never thought to add the pear but that really complimented the salad well. I was told that a MUST try is the head on soft shell shrimp. At first I wasn't thrilled about the thought of eating the head but said what the heck, lets go for the full experience! If you love softshell crabs you'll love this! There was nothing off putting about it. It simply taste like delicious premium shrimp in a fish caramel sauce with a hint of thai basil and chili. It was wonderful. I could have gone for a second round but I wanted to try other items. I enjoyed the seafood fried rice..this is similar to the crab fried rice but included uni roe and caviar with saracha on the side so you can regulate your heat level. I'll say this, while I enjoyed the seafood fried rice and the bonus elements of it, I was not a fan of the texture of the rice itself. Perhaps it's just my preference. The rice was light, fluffy and slightly sticky in texture whereas I prefer more of a thai fried rice which is dry, slightly firm and non-clumpy texture. But that's not taking any cool points away from Mawn. It's just my preference that i'm mentioning in case anyone else goes in expecting a different texture. I love the team service aspect at Mawn. Our waiter emphasized that we're not bugging anybody if we need anything we can stop any staff person walking by. I love that. Beef Noodle soup is delicous here. So is the yellow curry noodle soup. The fish is really good here too. I didn't realize I could have requested for it to be deboned (probably because I was talking to much lol) But my waiter was kind enough to come over and help me debone it when they saw I was struggling lol This was the first time I ever had a green thai tea! It was really a treat. Not overly sweet. Nothing but pure deliciousness here! And a super helpful warm friendly staff.

The papaya salad paired well with this, as it was tangy and refreshing, especially on such a hot day. The scallop crudo was a special for the night, but I think they should add this to their permanent menu because it was definitely a standout! The all star fried rice at $54 was also well worth it. I am often disappointed by dishes like these due to the lack of "stuff", but there was crab throughout and a generous portion of roe. I was a little disappointed however that there were only 2 scallops at that price. Overall, each dish had impeccable flavor, great presentation, and a good amount of seafood for the price.
