From there you walk towards the right through some tall grass and onto the beach. The last few steps are rocky and a little bumpy. The beach itself is absolutely gorgeous. The waves are pretty strong here and I don't recommend swimming in the water unless you're an expert. We watched the sunrise and a flurry of birds come in and dine on guppies right in front of us. The only downside to this beach is that inside the sand there are several sand-colored rocks buried and your feet will eventually bump into them. Everyone in the family scraped their feet at least once or smashed their toes into what they thought was be a pile of sand. I recommend wearing shoes up until you get here and even when exploring.

Finding a beach with actually decent free parking right off the highway can be a pain out here, but Nānākuli Beach Park made it super easy to just pull over and touch grass. The beach itself is really nice and wide, but the coolest part is definitely exploring the surrounding spots. If you walk around a bit, there are a lot of hidden rocky areas, tide pools, and cool vantage points to check out that most people probably just drive right past. It can get a little busy with locals hanging out and camping, but it gives it a genuine, non-touristy feel. Definitely worth pulling over if you're doing an island cruise and want to explore somewhere a little less manicured!

For the life of me, I'm baffled why a state park system can't keep up with clean restrooms, given all the hotel taxes, rental taxes, and airport taxes charged to visitors needing basic facilities as a matter of survival. Not everybody can or wants to stay at the Four Seasons (which is terrific). There isn't a job at a resort for every local resident. Ordinary people need to use restrooms and clean themselves afterwards. If the City of Paris can provide terrific self-cleaning portable facilities, with far more inhabitants, then the state of Hawaii can do it, too. Don't give us that BS that "it's not in the budget."
