The nurse practitioner, Sharon Knaub, coded the visit as an office visit (which my insurance won't cover) instead of a physical because she mentioned that she suffered from anxiety and acne. When I called to find out why they did this, I was told because she had complaints it was not considered to be a simple physical. Eventually, they did change the coding to a physical as a "courtesy." In July (after we had fulfilled our $6000 deductible - my son gets Medicaid because of ADD so all of his expensive meds fulfilled it) my daughter had an office visit to discuss her anxiety medication. During the visit, my daughter mentioned her periods were very irregular. Then Sharon told her if that continued she would need to start getting yearly gyn exams. Her periods continued to be irregular, so I made the appointment in January 2023 specifically asking for a yearly gyn exam. Sharon came into the room, asked my daughter why she was there, Sharon then told my daughter some people have irregular periods. Since my daughter is still a virgin Sharon said a pap smear and exam were unnecessary and she left. Sharon coded the visit as an office visit, which my insurance won't pay for, so UPMC expects me to pay them $150 for 5 minutes of time. My daughter could have been told the same thing during her yearly physical and we would have been spared wasting a lot of time, aggravation, and money. This shows that UPMC is a predatory organization. making patients come in under false pretenses and then charging them a lot of money. When I called to find out why the visit had been coded as an office visit, I was told nothing was in Sharon's notes about coming in if my daughter continued to have irregular periods. Well, I was in the room at the time and I certainly would't lie about something so stupid. Gyn exams are uncomfortable and I have no reason to subject my daughter to something like that if Sharon hadn't recommended it. I told the billing department I refused to pay, they could send me to collections, that my house is paid for and I have plenty of money to pay with cash for anything I need. The problem is, this will go on my daughter's credit report. My daughter is submitting a complaint to our insurance company. If that doesn't get us anywhere my entire family will leave UPMC and find doctors with their competitor, Wellspan.
