Nick is an amazing teacher. As someone who has been trying to find 'my voice' for many years, I can say with all certainty that Nick's methods really helped me unlock it. A year ago I struggled and croaked pitchy notes over a couple octaves as a 'barely-a-tenor' but now I can move freely from F2 to C5 (and higher when he wants me to!!) He did this by completely tearing down all the mechanics of my voice and worked pieces/exercises that gradually strengthen each area. Akin to the Karate Kid's "wax on, wax off" scenes there were many moments of "how is this even going to help me sing better??" and then boom! parts of my voice started to unlock more and more. Today everything feels so effortless, we are searching constantly for more and more challenging pieces. I was most impressed how he used tools on his phone to analyze the notes I would sing and how best to direct the air to find the best places for resonance; which is how that rich 'ringing' tone is achieved.
He is rooted in deep musical theory and choral experience but has the breadth of knowledge to span all forms of music. We work on many different types of material stretching from classical, jazz, broadway, country, classic rock, soul to modern pop and R&B (and a bit of Radiohead from time to time! )
The environment for the lessons is very casual and welcoming as you learn in a pleasant medium sized choral room at a local church (not in some 7x7 box!). It's also private enough to feel safe to experiment and make mistakes with your voice (which is critical IMO). From time to time we will sing in the main sanctuary as to get a feel for different acoustics and learning how to not 'over-sing' in places where you can't hear yourself as well. Parking is always good too. ha
Anyway if you have been struggling as I did to develop your voice or even starting from scratch, then you won't find a more welcoming and supportive teacher than Nick. It does take time to learn of course like all things, but it's so worth it. The only negative I can think of is that I wished I'd come to see him sooner! read more
