Last if my retro check in reviews!! Ok, food is 3 stars, that hot bread (with dragons breath steam) is a 5 star all day... 4 star review. Lunch specials, are fire.. I rarely make them, but when I do i am glad. They meats are amazing, I wont lie... I dont know what they all are half the time, I try to get combos and order family style and go big. Dinners, pick all you can. Personally I dont eat much middle eastern food, I tend to go Indian for my exotic spices. The falafel is good not great, same with the gyro... the schwarma style meats are amazing, and really anything with a yogurt base to slap some yellow/red meat on is great, I base my meals around that hot bread. Horrible inedible food, looks and tastes like garbage. the vegetarian bowl was soggy vegetables grilled days ago then reheated, an icky green sauce, soggy yucky brown flavored rice, and a small amount of soggy wet greens at the bottom. the falafel balls were stale, greasy, hot and with a bad flavor. The stale Baklava platter was not made there but was from another place. the huge round of bread was fresh and good. i had to stop eating the vegetables in the lunch bowl they were so awful and took one bite of the stale Baklava and put the rest down. i tried to drink the Turkish coffee but it was not fresh, it clearly had a fridge taste and seemed like it was reheated in the microwave. the coffee tasted like there was cumin or something in the coffee. never again will I enter that horrible place. i felt stupid that I paid for this garbage but it was my friends choice on her birthday. she disliked the food also. read more

We still love Nicolas, we've been going here for 8 years. They did do a remodel maybe a yr ago, it looks really nice. The only down side is that the booths are so small, it's so uncomfortable. And I don't even mean just the seating area of the booth, the table is so narrow that everything barely fits on it, and you feel like you're gonna knock everything off. Maybe if you were eating somewhere where there wasn't a large tray with bread and the bowl of herbs and oil and maybe a plate of hummus and whatever meal you order usually comes with the little side of the garlic butter and Taziki. It's just a lot of items to have on such a narrow table. It was really unenjoyable because you feel like you're having to be super careful not to spill the whole time. We also have a one-year-old with us. I had to go find my own highchair when we were seated by the time I get the highchair over there and I'm trying to get him in. They're coming back with waters and bread and trying to reach over me while putting my kid in the highchair and getting him set up to put things on the table. Why? Wait two minutes so I can get him settled before you start bringing things in and trying to reach over me, strapping him in. Also, if you had went and got the highchair for me, this would've been a lot quicker. I would'nt have had to go find it. I would just say if you like a little elbow room, definitely ask to be at a stand alone table. read more

We've been going to Nicholas for years and have always enjoyed it. I've always rated our experience with 5 stars. Tonight, however, was pretty bad. The service was excellent, as always. But, aside from their delicious fresh pita with zaatar and oil for dipping and the falafel, we found the food extremely unsatisfactory and WAY over-priced for what we got. My partner and I both ordered shawarma plates - I ordered it with chicken and she ordered hers with beef. The meat was nearly non-existent on the plate, which included rice and was otherwise COVERED with a giant blob of hummus (which we don't like) and a salad DRENCHED in dressing- we had both asked for the dressing on the side when we ordered. The cook ignored this and the waitress noticed that and apologized, but did nothing to fix it. Even if I liked the flavor of it, the salad would have been WAY over-dressed for the average person. Now, as I said, I had ordered chicken shawarma. Well, for some reason, I had strips of beef as well as fatty chicken on my plate. Good thing I eat beef. The meat was then covered in a really unappetizing green sauce. I tried to wipe it off with a napkin, but there was really no getting rid of that taste and what little meat I was given was rendered inedible. I should also mention that we looked over and saw two gentlemen sitting nearby that had also ordered shawarma. They had both pushed their salads and hummus to the side and only eaten the rice and meat. LOL The tabouli we ordered on the side was good, except that I bit into a mouthful of salt that I had to spit out - apparently it hadn't been stirred well enough. The biggest curiosity of this visit was that we paid $18.50 for a plate of nothing but sauces with rice and kale! What happened to the lovely portions of meat Nicholas used to serve?! And why do they feel the need to cover everything in disgusting sauces? read more

After landing at PDX, we stopped here for lunch on our drive to Bend. We got some apps and some bowls, and all were delicious. We also enjoyed their complementary giant flat-ish round breads that were served. The other three friends in the car were impressed with the food, and amazed that I was able to find such a good place seemingly in the middle of nowhere. How the mighty have fallen. I have gone to this place for year and years. I went there on a Sunday a few weeks ago and both my wife and I were extremely disappointed. Starting off the bread they brought out tasted like it had been in the freezer too long. For those who don't know what that tastes like with dough that is later cooked into bread. It tastes like you're eating raw flour. It looked like it was only half cooked but all of it was hard enough to snap the outer crust. My wife and I shared the Arabian breeze mezza. The cauliflower was cold and way under seasoned. The humus was watery and very sour The roasted red pepper humus tasted sour like it was really old. The falafel looked like it was over cooked on the outside but somehow was cold on the inside. This was very disappointing. I talked with a few friends that frequent this restaurant and they have had similar experiences lately. I would be more understanding if I came on a Monday with this quality but going on a Sunday it should have been quality. read more

There are far better Lebanese establishments in Portland. lL Amir for example has the finest quality in both flavor and quality and superior service. Ordered with uber eats. I was craving some authentic hummus and the wonderful pitas they make. Also ordered falafel, tabouli salad, and baklava. I figured the pita wouldn't be as awesome as when you order it in the restaurant - where it pops out of the oven and they bring it right to you - but I was sure it would still be good. And it was very good. I warmed it in my oven, no problem. The hummus was also exactly right. The falafel was dry and cold, the tabouli unremarkable. The baklava was great. What I'm actually curious about was why it took more than an hour for this mid day order. Nicholas has the longest prep and delivery times of just about any restaurant on the delivery apps. I knew this was the case, so I didn't wait until I was super hungry to order. This was an indulgence, a comfort splurge on a stressful day, so it was worth it in the moment. But with the overall meh of the other items I ordered combined with the long wait, i won't get delivery from them again. *hey, just read comments from business owner and appreciate how they want to make sure we have a good experience. I won't be accepting any discount, that wouldn't be ethical. I will restate, for the record, that dining in is the way to go and that the fresh pita is the best in town. OMG. The food here is so so good. The service was okay, not great, but definitely fine. But the food. Oh. The fact that they have made the effort to show clearly what is Vegan really matters to me. This is an old family restaurant and even though they clearly are busy and have great food, they go the extra mile to make sure vegans are happy. Their food is really good, though I was a little shocked at how limited the menu seemed. They start you out with a large piece of bread and seasonings before your meal, and I was surprised to also have a salad that came before my actual meal, then the main course. Nice place for a summer dinner. Gresham Main Street is a happening place and the restaurant was full. We came here with a large party, and we were glad we could make a reservation. I had a lamb kebab pizza, which was good but not great, hence the 4. The cheese and lack of other sauce made it feel a little heavy. Others in my group had home runs, especially the gyros and shawarma. The kebabs were also popular, and the saffron rice that came with them were a hit. A surprise was the toum, a garlic paste to be used as an accompaniment. A little goes a long ways, I'm told. One person thought it was mashed potatoes and dug in. Added a little excitement to the meal. Cinnamon mint tea was a refreshing counterpoint to the food. If making a reservation, be sure to mention if anyone has a disability and needs extra space for any reason. We were at a round table in the middle. It was challenging keeping the walker out of the way of servers and other guests walking by. read more

They say that there have been people in Lebanon for over 7000 years, pre-dating recorded history. Maybe it's the food, because after my first exposure to Lebanese food I wouldn't want to die either without having more. While very carb heavy, every now and then that is just what the Doctor ordered. The space is small but as luck would have it we arrived with a party of four after the lunch rush. Immediately a large flat bread came wafting to the table and water right after that. A very good herb/oil combination came with the bread for dipping. The flat bread alone could have filled up one person. Perusing the menu was a adventure as I went jumping from plate to plate thinking that was what I wanted. It got ridiculous after a while and I had to hunker down and order something. It came down to a falafel plate or the Stephens Beef or Chicken. One of our party ordered the chicken, so I opted for the beef. In the meantime falafel and babaganoush came to our table as an appetizer. After some talk, some flat bread, some falafel and dipping things in various sauces, these huge platters came to our table. I am not just talking a plate here, I am talking full on platters mounding high with flavored rice, seasoned and marinated beef, a sort of sour cream sauce and garlic (it comes with tomato as well but I opted out of that). I stared at my "lunch" which was the size of two dinners. I picked up a fork but just held it in my hand not knowing where to begin, knowing that I would never get to the end. Strips of citrus marinated and seasoned beef were everywhere in this dish. It was amazing the amount of food for $11. I kept digging and soon figured out that I need to ignore the rice and concentrate on the meat and toppings. For a moment I thought about the Travel Channel TV show Man VS Food and I know in my hearts of hearts that Adam Richman would die in this place. Am I going back? Heck yes I am, and I am bringing lots of friends, big, hungry friends and I am going to watch them all epic fail trying to get to the end of this meal. Good food and entertainment all in one! This is going to be a scathing review but we were very disappointed and won't be coming back. We paid over $90.00 for this dining out experience on a Saturday night. Let's start with the ambiance- the lighting for the evening is much too bright. It made me feel like I was eating in a cafeteria. The decorations and lighting fixtures could have more of a nod to the culture. The modern lighting fixtures in the middle section certainly stick out like a sore thumb. The taped walls were tacky. Paint does wonders. Perhaps some low volume Mediterranean/regional music? Now for the food. I had the Beirut Betty (cocktail) which was probably the best part of my meal. At least the bartender knew what they were doing. The flavors were balanced and not overpowering which can sometimes be hard to achieve when mixing gin. We ordered the vegetable mezza as an appetizer and as our main dishes my husband got the Lamb Kabob and I got the Chicken Shawarma Plate. The first off putting part of this was the delivery. We were bombarded by all of the food we ordered at once. When I mentioned to the Server that we were surprised that it all came at once we were met with a shrug and an excuse of it being a very busy night. Ummm, okay sure. It was but that's no excuse for the timing of the dishes to be so terribly off. The veggie mezza was okay. But I think a pita bread should come with it. We were eating the pita from the beginning of the meal. The Lamb Kabob was sadly overcooked. The rice that was served with it was not the saffron rice advertised on the menu. It was just a plain white rice and it was tasteless. The presentation was lackluster. The Chicken Shawarma- the chicken was dry. My rice was just cooked in chicken broth and that's all it tasted like. For both main dishes the Mediterranean flavors were muted and fell short. Our standard gyro place has more flavor than this place does. Overall a really dissatisfying and disappointing experience on all points. read more

Pita - about as big as a sewer cover Iced Turkish coffee - next time I'd order without the chocolate syrup...had no idea it came with it, but it was tasty! Lentil Soup....ok bad idea. The smell of Zatar spices and freshly baked pita bread will lure you into this establishment as you stroll the mom & pop shops along the streets of historic Gresham. My friend and I were greeted and seated right away on a Tuesday afternoon. There were a few other patrons enjoying their meal at tables inside and outside of the restaurant. There is a large selection of food available on the menu from appetizers like hummus and baba ganoush, to salads like tabouli and fatoush, to entrees such as shawerma and kabob, to desserts like baklava. Even mezzas are available if you want a large sampler plate to share with friends. We ordered hummus and it was delivered to our table promptly with freshly, baked pita bread the size of an extra large pizza crust. The hummus was creamy and smooth as it should be. I ordered tabouli salad for a dollar more with my lamb shawerma. The combo plate came with hummus too, but the waitress was nice enough to switch out the hummus on my combo plate with baba ganoush since we had already ordered a plate of hummus for our appetizer. The lamb was finely shredded and juicy and without grizzle. It was wrapped in paper and sliced in half, so I put half on my friend's plate and she gave me one of her chicken kabobs and some saffron rice. The chicken was flavorful and tender. I wasn't that impressed with the saffron rice; although plump, it lacked visual and taste appeal. There was so much food, we were given boxes to take the rest home. We also ordered food to go for another friend. The staff said it would be twenty minutes. The restaurant was kind enough to set aside our leftover food, let us walk around the shops in town and pick up our takeaway food an hour later. Having grown up in Saudi Arabia, we both agreed that the food here reminded us of home and beckoned us to return. We will both be back WITH friends! read more
