A family member from Israel says the food tastes just like home. That's reason enough to eat at Nicholas. My favorite is the lamb platter with the jasmine saffron rice and garlic aioli. The aioli is sooo good! I usually get extra aioli to take home for my leftovers. The portion is large enough to split or take home for the next day's lunch. I love that each meal comes with warm bread and oil for dipping. You can also ask for more bread when dining in. We've ordered the falafel appetizer, tahini, meat stuffed grape leaves, hummus, gyro sandwich, lamb shawarma sandwich, lamb kabab, lamb shawarma plate, meat mezza, baklava, and rice pudding. Everything is really tasty! Be sure to save room for the rice pudding. If you're too full at the restaurant, take the rice pudding home, it is that good. Heads up, lamb/chicken/ lamb shawarma can be ordered as a sandwich or a platter, be sure to specify which one you want. The Gresham location can get busy during dinner hours. They accept reservations for large groups. I believe for eight or more. Be sure to call ahead. read more

Princely greeting met us at the door and the royal service continued as a Giant Puffed Pita was served with Olive Oil spiced with Thyme and Oregano plus an extra side of creamy Hummus ($7 - 5 stars) made with Chickpeas (garbanzo beans), Tahini, Garlic, Olive Oil, and Lemon. The energy level and cool factor immediately went up when a couple orders of Classic Turkish Coffee ($4.50 each - 5 stars) followed. I could of just sat there all afternoon enjoying the strong caffeine and flatbread with dips ... but, we weren't done ... and got both specialties listed on the menu. * Nicholas Chicken Plate ($16 - 4-5 stars) Flavorful and tender sliced Chicken Breast is breaded and served with Tomatoes and Tzatziki on Saffron Jasmine Rice. I could taste why it is popular with locals. * Shawarma Plate with Lamb ($18 - 4 stars) Marinated in Lebanese Spices and Onions, the thin slices of Lamb had a few tough pieces, but tasted delicious. It came with More Hummus, a Salad of Cabbage, Kale, & Garbanzo Beans, and more Saffron Jasmine Rice. The entire meal, atmosphere, and service lived up to the high standards of the Portland location. Some of my fondest memories when I was younger can be found within the comforts of Nicholas, with their warm pita and delicious hummus. Regardless of what you get here, it'll be sure to be delivered with a smile despite the bustling nature of the restaurant. It's been a while since I last visited, but the food is as delicious as it was years ago. They've recently remodeled to fit even more people, and even though I miss the conversation style tables, I'm glad they're able to accommodate more people. We ordered lamb and chicken skewers, which were huge for the portion, and we enjoyed every bite we took. Additionally, a majority of their appetizers, including the spanakopita, were also really, really good. If it sounds good, it probably tastes good here as well. Their mango lassi is also really good :) Their salads are fresh with a juicy dressing, and the constant refills of the pita are enough for us to make the drive. Nicholas will always be one of my favorite restaurants, and I hope they stay for years to come. read more

When I first moved to Oregon, I went to the downtown location for Nicholas and was very pleased with the food and atmosphere. I was in Gresham for work and saw their second location and was ready for lunch. There were three in our party and I had the chicken wrap and the falafel balls as an appetizer. The food was great and was delivered quickly. The staff was friendly, but seemed stretched a little thin for a late lunch on a weekday. All in all great experience and will definitely be back. I have been passed this restaurant a few thousand times but never ate there, until today. I may have a new weekend go to, for to go. The restaurant has a relaxed vibe that you can sit and talk without yelling. Also, they have seating for groups big and small. As for the food, one of the best gyros I've ever had and the Gluten-free wrap on it was so good. The person with me has the shawarma and it was a pretty great portion. I had a taste of the hummus and it was pretty good. A very mellow flavor. The only issues I had, was the giant pita (we got no warning or offer of it and neither of us can eat it, so it was sort of a waste) and the overworked(?) server. There were only 2 servers and they were running around a lot. Our poor waitress could barely catch her breath. All in all great food for sure, will be back. read more

I have been obsessed with falafel ever since I had it for breakfast everyday in Egypt, so we try to find Mediterranean food spots whenever possible. They're falafel was really good, the booths are a little snug though, so if you order a lot of food it can feel a little overwhelming, but the food and service is great, and I'd recommend this place if anyones looking for amazing fresh somewhat healthy food in the Portland/Gresham area. read more

This place is still great! When ordering lemonade, my server (I think his name was Eric, he was awesome) asked if I wanted strawberry or mint. I said I'd never tried the mint, so strawberry. When he came back, he brought a little cup of mint lemonade with a mint leaf and lemon slice on top so I could try it! (It was delicious and refreshing by the way.) I ate so much free pita bread and the oil/spice dip that I only ate two slices of my pizza before I was too full. read more

This used to my favorite place to get Kafta kebab on a bed of rice, but something different started happening with the recipe and how they prepare it. It used to be in the shape of a meatball, jam packed with flavor and came with red bell peppers and onions on the kebab. Now it's shaped long on a stick resembling the shape of a turd, bland in flavor and no more vegetables, and the price increased. Idk what happened, but I don't like the new recipe, the flavor is lacking, the shape is horrendously unappealing and no more vegetables. Super disappointing I hope they at least go back to the old shape so it doesn't look like anymore. read more

Having had Nicholas in their other location, we came here after a day on the snow/mount hood. We arrived with the restaurant being fully packed on a Saturday night around 6. We were seated right around our reservation time at 6:30, perfect. The restaurant was very busy, the appetizer hummus came out after our entree, which isn't great but not a huge deal. The pita bread came out flat instead of super fluffy, again not great but still very delicious. The lamb Kebob was juicy and tender, absolutely amazing. Unfortunately the lamb shawarma was dry in comparison, taste was good though, and the rice on both plates were perfect. Our server shared there is a kid plate/kebob option when we were prepared to order an entree for our two kids to share, so that was nice but the rest of our table wasn't aware of this option. We also had to flag people down for water and refills, as well as asking for missing sets of utensils. All in all, people were nice, food was delicious, the place was packed so service wasn't top notch. They also had two ladies singing live which was fantastic but does make conversation a bit tougher to have. I would be willing to come back again. read more

I meet a good friend every few months, and this is our go-to place in Gresham. We both had the lamb kabobs with rice and it was fantastic. The salad before our main entre is fresh and just the right amount. Bread is always fantastic. Very generous portions and the price was really good. The seasonings are what make it special to me, and the service was great. Our server came by to check on us but wasnt too overbearing. Great location in old downtown Gresham with shops and even the farmers market close by on Saturday. Well worth the trip. read more

Honestly, I wanted to like this place. About half of our food was good. But, the server made a mistake with the gluten free status of one of our items. They were clearly just having a hard day - dropped and shattered some dishes, were relatively inattentive to us, and just having a hard time. Specifically, the lamb shawarma was gristly, lacking flavor, and came to our table cold. The salad also lacked flavor. The rice and hummus were great. The environment was also just strangely loud and uncomfortable to me for some reason. I don't know, I've had better food at food carts in PDX without the hassles of this place and for cheaper. Sorry, I just really didn't like it. read more

The food is always delicious and a frequent stop for dinner when in the downtown Gresham area. The bread and dipping oil is always enjoyed by our daughter and she likes to eat all the flavorful food. There isn't ever an extremely long wait if there is one and food comes pretty quickly with large helpings and reasonable prices. read more

Been here in all their remodels! Went last night, it was hopping busy. The decor is spot on and it took me to a nice Lebanese bistro in NYC! Falafel is very tasty with complex tones! Both tahini & hummus smooth as silk, and the spinach pie was a real surprise treat. Service was really good, even though they were super busy (every seat taken!)! And shout out to the bartender! Every time I eat at Nicolas, the plate set before me is heaping with flavorful colorful components no matter what I pick from the menu. Every bite is new depending on what you catch with your fork. It's the kind of place I like to bring a good friend along, to sit and enjoy fresh pita with Tzatziki sauce, to just sit in the smells and take my time to taste each expertly crafted plate of Lebanese goodness. But when one must eat and run, their lunch bowls are also a delicious and quick go-to. I've experienced seriously delicious food and super great service with every visit and I highly recommend giving them a try! Edit/addition: I made myself so hungry for Nicolas when I wrote this review that I just had to get in there for lunch today. I got the chicken lunch bowl with chickpeas, jasmine rice, and (roasted, grilled, baked?) chicken and veggies. No man can do for you what this bowl will. I love the flavors of the food here! The only thing I don't care for is that the meat on the kababs is usually dry, over cooked, especially the chicken. The steak is often chewy. Nicholas is a staple branch of their main restaurant in Portland. What can I say? They have excellent Mediterranean food. They have great sit down service or if you just want a gyro when you're on your way somewhere. I don't have any pictures of dishes, I did on an old phone. (Is that still a thing?) But trust me, the presentation is very appealing. You don't need my life story why Nicholas is a great place to eat. Let's just say quality non American food was sorely lacking in Gresham for decades, and I'm very glad Nicholas is here. read more
