Looking for a reasonably priced salon in this expensive ass city, everyone I knew directed me to this place. Although the prices have increased (incrementally) since 2009, what remains the same is their level of service, friendliness, and pulse on the gay community! Tip: ask for Betty, Julie, or Leah. I've been here twice, and it's a decent haircut for the price point. They seem to cut my hair way too quickly, however it comes out better and more even than some haircuts that have taken twice the time. So whatever they're doing, it works. It is not my first choice of a place to get a haircut. However, if I need to get one right away on either drop in basis or short notice. These ladies crack me up. They cut a mean haircut, but never with a malicious attitude. If you've come here for the down and dirty quick cut for a great bargain price, then you've definitely come to the right place. It has been a while since I've been in but upon every moment sitting down in one of their chairs, they'll ask if you're single, have a boyfriend, or dating. It's a sure-thing. If you proceed to say no to any of those answers, well it's because you don't have a "fo-hawk". This is the point in which one of the hair dressers pulls out a picture of another man with a fo-hawk and says "See! He has boyfriend". I get a chuckle every time. read more

I go to Betty and only Betty. She's cut my hair for 3 years. People think I go to some chic place in Hayes Valley, but I don't. I go to some cheap place in the Castro. Betty is the kindest. I once called her an hour before closing to make an appointment and she put me on the books. When I showed up late because of some kind of Muni miss-hap, she still agreed to cut my hair even though the shop was going to close in 10 minutes. She didn't rush at all, same careful precision as a normal appointment. Betty loves to dish out the hot gossip in the gayborhood. I really don't like to write negative yelp reviews but I had my haircut several days ago and I'm still pissed about it. It is hands-down the worst haircut I've ever had in my life. When I started my haircut I showed the lady several pictures of how I usually cut it. I was very specific of how I'd like it to fade from short at the bottom to longer at the top. I emphasized the word "fade" multiple times. She literally took a 1 mm razor all along the sides of my head and all the way up to the top where she made a solid line. (See photo) One side is about a half an inch higher than the other. I look like a marine with bad haircut. The worst part is that it looks really unprofessional for my work. I cut my own hair three weeks ago and literally did a better job and this lady. She Might not have spoken the best English and she might not have known what the word "fade" meant, but if that's the case then don't take a job in customer service where your job is to take specific directions from people and follow through. I'm giving this place two stars and not one because I've gone in here before and a lady named Leah did a pretty good job. Unfortunately she's not there very often so you have to settle with someone else. You have to understand when you go into places like this that these Chinese ladies don't have a lot of experience. They just one day decided "OK now I'm going to be a hairstylist," and that's what they do. It's like playing roulette with your hair. Sometimes you can get a good one. More often than not you won't. To their credit all of the ladies are very friendly and it's inexpensive. I'm guessing that's why they have a lot of five-star reviews. Bottom line is that it's not a good haircut. No blending, no shaping, no skill or care put into it at all. It's cheap. That's it. I'll be wearing hats for the next few weeks. read more

Don't let the generic name fools you - this place is da bomb dot com! I've only been here twice (though something tells me that number should have been much higher) and hit the jackpot both times. First time I just let Betty do her thing - got majorly laid that night. Second time, I walked in with a photo of Macklemore, walked out looking fly like a G6. If there's anything you should know about this place, it's recommended that you walk in with a photo of the haircut that you want. I got my haircut here on Sunday. It was around 11 and I walked in without an appointment and was getting my hair did immediately. I'm a pretty typical guy in that I could give a shit about my hair so long as it stays out of my face. Betty understood this and being the HAIRCUTTING MACHINE that she is, gave me an awesome haircut. I mean, she was like cutting around the hairline and trimming my sideburns and still had time to converse. The fact that I paid $20 (including tip!) is what really makes this place awesome. I have been going to this establishment for about 6 months. As I get a haircut every 2-3weeks, I feel that I should be able to write a pretty good review at this point. About 7 months ago, I put out a "request" amongst the fellas for advice on haircut establishments. There were 2 salons that kept coming up; one in the Richmond, and this one. I made the right choice. Service here is quick, efficient and SKILLED. For years I would go to a salon where your fate depended on the stylist that you got. Not Nice Cuts. You can rest assured that no matter who you get, you're going to leave with a decent to great haircut. I especially like Linda, however; she is funny and nice. The decor of the building is a bit dated, but that can't really be helped; San Francisco is notorious for its small spaces. Though the waiting area that is immediately at the front of the salon may be small, this is easily taken care of by quick service. No one is ever left standing and it is never so under-staffed that I can't grab a seat. An added perk is that if you get a clean enough haircut, or rather if it seems that you need a wash, they will give you a rinse for free. This is unheard of in my experience at other salons... well unheard of because it's free at Nice Cuts. At other places I've had to pay.. for a RINSE! NOTE: Nice Cuts sells Crew Molding Creme for about $7.00 LESS than Walgreens. read more

I love this place. In and out within 20 minutes. And you don't look like you gave yourself the haircut. All gay men go here so they are very good and doing "gay" hair styles and trim. I'm bummer they now charge $2 for a rinse, but I like them so much I continue to go. Plus, +$2 means the total is like $18. Sherry is the one we normally see, at times she can be a little rushed and does not do a perfect job but again your paying 25.00 rather then 75 at other salons. Others seem pretty nice in there, just a matter of checking your hair before you leave and making sure its the way you want it. For a cheaper place I would say you get better then you would think you would. But its the Castro and your always going to have someone complain if thats the case there are places that will gladly cut your hair for 75-150 near buy. read more

Simple, fast, easy, and exactly what I want. All these things at Nice Cuts. I ended up here because my boyfriend wanted a haircut. I was skeptical because it was only $20 and the the salon looks like it belongs in a mall. They asked if I wanted one too, and said "Come! You can get a haircut too!" to which I agreed. I've come back 5 times since and the rest is history. Things to know: I love that I can call in for an appointment 15 minutes before I arrive, and they will take care of me as soon as I get there. They take appointments first, so I suggest calling in, whether you want a haircut in an hour or in 5 minutes. My haircut is simple, and it always turns out great. I've never had a problem with any of the girls cutting my hair there. I've gone to each one, asking the same exact hairstyle (2 on the sides, a half inch off the top, in a faux hawk style, if you'd like to know). They give you exactly what you want, no frills. Make sure you know what hairstyle you'd like and explain it to them, they'll go from there. Also, their American Crew styling pastes are cheaper than anywhere else. I love that. read more

At least the haircut was cheap, because the haircut was poor. I still have long strands sticking up on the top of my head where they shouldn't be. When I paid at the counter, I noticed that the black-haired woman who'd cut my hair had eyes that looked in two different directions, like a chameleon's. That's not a joke, not an insult, not "oh that's so silly" -- this actually happened. One eye looked left, the other looked right. Nothing about my transaction at Nice Cuts felt good other than that it was relatively cheap and that I now know never to go there again. Speedking! This place is close to my house, so I figured I had to try it. Oftentimes it's pretty crowded when I walk by, so I decided to drop in on Wednesday to make an appointment. They wanted to seat me right away and cut my hair (it was fairly empty), but I sticked to my plan and scheduled for the next day. I think only on the weekends it gets crowded. When I got there on Thursday I was attended right away. I basically just wanted all my hair off, except a bit more length on top. She, Maria [Something] was her name, grabbed a magazine, flipped to a page and asked me if I wanted it as that guy in the picture. It was what I wanted--and off she went. I had never gotten a haircut at this speed. She managed the trimmer quickly around the sides, blew away some cut-off hair once in a while, switched to scissors, trimmed some on top, then trimmed the back. During this whole period I noticed she hardly ever looked into the mirror, but nevertheless, it turned out to be a good cut. To my surprise she took me back to wash my hair after cutting (not before though), then broomed my hair a bit more and finally put some gel in it. By the time she handed me the mirror to check out my "behind," maybe 10 minutes had passed. However, it looked pretty good--but I am not too picky about haircuts anyway, especially not if it's a real short one (how much can you do wrong, really?). $16 plus tip and good-bye. Now while I really do like the price, and also think the cut was quite good, I guess a bit more of attention wouldn't be bad. If you're going in for some more sophisticated haircut, you will probably need that. But this was not my case, so I cannot complain. So, I'm going to be honest, I hadn't gotten a haircut in a while and my ends were starting to get really bad. I only needed a trim and didn't want to spend a lot of money. Someone please call Bravo for "Tabathas Salon Take Over". There is NO receptionist. I walked in last week to make an appointment and an older gentleman (maybe manager or owner) was screaming to a stylist - a totally inappropriate work behavior. Then, I have always been dried by those "disgusting" pinkish towels. Those over-used towels should go to the trash. I just got the haircut and the rag to put on the customer was purple - WTF? I understand the economy is bad - but a major make over will provide customers a pleasant atmosphere even though the prices would be raise. Please also add central heat. Wearing a heavy coat in cold weather as the place has not heater would not be attractive to the customers. If this was my first time at Nice Cut, I would truly believe that Nice Cut was an undercover Geisha facility. read more

Went here for a cut and shave. They charged me 20.00 for the cut and 5.00 for shave., came back in a two weeks for another shave and they wanted 15.00 And told they could not shave my beard for 5.00. Top kudos to JULIE for her fantastic personality, patience, healthy small talk (not too much or too little) and good hair cutting sense. I had (15) INCHES of my hair hacked off when I decided to donate my locks to LOCKS OF LOVE (an organization that helps provide wigs to child cancer patients). I made a last-minute appointment with Julie and showed up 10 minutes late. I profusely apologized, and she brushed it off lightly with a smile and helped me out of my coat (I have a broken wrist!). As I hadn't had hair this short in YEARS, Julie proceeded to take her time to talk to me about the final length and style that I would like and which would be most complimentary. Additional walk-ins piled up, but Julie gave me the attention and service you rarely find in most "cheap" haircutting places. Background: I discovered this VERY REASONABLY priced hair salon about 6 years back when I was looking for a new home for my haircuts. I have Asian hair that is not your typical Asian hair - it's not super stick straight and course. My first hair cutter, Daniel (since left for New York - I was devastated), immediately identified this and gave great advice on cuts and styles that would best flatter my face. When he parted, he recommended JULIE. She has been my San Francisco hair cutter since. I even left for LA (shame on me) for 2 years, but came back to her. Finding a good, trustworthy hair cutter is super important to me. The fact that it's also so inexpensive ($16!) is just a bonus. read more

$16 haircut experiment = FAIL The Request: "Hi, I'm trying to grow my hair out, so don't take off much length. Just trim the bangs and clean up the back so i don't look like i have a mullet" The Result: Two inches of my hair on the ground. Short on top yet still long around the ears. Honorable mention They used a razor that was so dull the haircut was actually painful. I think it pulled as much hair out as it cut. Then she finished with those weird thinning scissors. I got my hair cut by betty who continually kept on insulting my hair condition and its color. In the middle of the cut her friend/ loyal customer walks in and thats when she starts hurrying up with my hair. she scurrys her way to finish my cut and doesnt even care to blow dry it for me. I was furniture shopping with my BF, and I overheard this gorgeous silver fox with gorgeous hair tell another gentleman- "...oh you like my cut? I always go to NICE CUTS on 17th and Castro." I looked over at my own fox, who was grizzly and sporting his own mini-fro, and said, "we're going to NICE CUTS." Its in our neighborhood, and we were getting off the muni a few days later and chanced a drop-in the day before Valentine's. My BF got Betty with no wait at all, and I'm glad he did. My BF is a gorgeous filipino, with thick semi-wavy hair when it gets long, and he's got kind of a big noggin (love you!) so I can be picky if they cut it too short on top, not enough on the sides, etc. I didn't even have to worry. He came out looking delicious, on the CHEAP. I'd recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood who wants a great men's style cut. Having been scarred by a litany of horrible haircuts takes its toll on a young man after a while. After exhausting every option short of the "fuck-it" buzzed look, I decided to adopt the "fuck-it" uncut, long-haired hippie look about a year and a half ago. This evaded my then-girlfriend's radar for about 8 months before she recruited her friends and every other significant woman in my life to get a damn haircut. She even promised to pay. Enter Sherry from Nice Cuts... For $20 (including tip!), Sherry is the shit. I've been going to her for almost a year now and couldn't be happier. I've never gotten a bad haircut. I'd venture to say that the guy who wasn't satisfied with Sherry has a funnily-shaped head to begin with, and that he's trying to blame her for his disfigurement, as I've sent both of my roommates and several friends to her with nothing but spectacular results. Like many places in SF, it seems this place also went down, then the recession hit. Last time I went in, my hair was REALLY LONG, I asked for it short... I basically ended up with a trim. Betty had a client that came in, when I was half way through my "trim" (which was supposed to be a full fledged cut, and she rushed to finish. She left long hairs behind my ears, uneven blend on the sides, and the front of my hair was still just as long as before. I wanted it short faux hawk, I got hacked by a weed wacker. I guess service is rushed when they are desperate to get more people in to make money. I have selected my neighbor to further cut my hair now, and will likely NEVER go back to this place. read more

"Meh. I've experienced better." definitely sums up this experience. It's nice that it was only $16 and no wait. But, definitely not worth more than 2 stars. My lady spent over 20 minutes shaving my back and sides - to her credit, it's actually pretty nice and clean. I can't say the same about the top portion of my head. I asked her to texture the top part and blend it. She cut an inch straight from the top and textured only the crown of my head. The back sticks straight up cause it's so short and there's no texture at all. The haircut felt really rushed and she also answered the phone and attend guests multiple times during the haircut. meh is right. read more
